An Introduction to iPhoneography

Posted on November 23, 2011 - 12:07am

Hello!

My name is Kate, you may know me from chatroom during creativeLIVE workshops. Along with being a part of the team at creativeLIVE I am also a photographer and avid iPhoneographer.

What is iPhoneography? Well, iPhoneography is the art of creating images with your iPhone! Since acquiring my first iPhone in 2009, I have created over 10,000 images, successfully completed my first iPhone 365 project in 2010 and I'm more than 300 days towards the completion of my second iPhone365 project. Along with the challenge of creating images daily, I have embraced the use of iPhone Apps to shoot and edit all of the images.

What does creativeLIVE mean to you?

Posted on November 21, 2011 - 9:00am

We've got a fun community activity this week.

Here's your opportunity to share your creativeLIVE stories with each other. If you appreciate the education creativeLIVE brings to you, we invite you to answer two simple questions in the comments on this blog post:

1. Where do you watch creativeLIVE? Where in the world do you watch? What time of day do you catch the LIVE feed?

2. What's your creativeLIVE story? There are lots of education opportunities available today: workshops, conferences, local classes, training videos, or other online webinars. How is the creativeLIVE experience different? How would you describe this experience to someone who has never watched a creativeLIVE event before? What has creativeLIVE meant in your life?

Leave a comment today, and encourage other creativeLIVE fans to join in as well.

Shooting Tethered with the Sony a900 in Lightroom 3

Posted on November 17, 2011 - 12:07am

Hey there, it's nikko here, the media & tech guy for creativeLIVE, making my first guest blog post. Today I'll be talking about using the Sony a900 with Lightroom 3.5.

If you shoot with a Sony a900 or a a700/a850, you may have noticed that you are unable to shoot tethered with Lightroom 3.5. There was a relatively recent camera update that allowed camera support for this camera in Lightroom, but the option of tethering is still unavailable. If you do some light digging on the 'net you'll find that there's some pricey software out there that claims to allow you to shoot tethered in Lightroom 3 with your Sony, but I'm going to show you a FREE workaround.

Laura Abigail is Rockin' Her Photography Business at Age 20

Today we begin our creativeLIVE Guest Blogger series. In case you missed it, last week I called for guest blog submissions. I selected Laura Abigail as our first guest blogger because of her intention: "Maybe my story could help other (young) photographers to get started as a concert photographer. It's quite hard to become one as you can't start working for a site/magazine without a great portfolio, but you can't get a great portfolio if you don't get the chance to actually be in that frontstage and shoot concerts." No matter what arena of photography, the age old question is always 'how do I get started?' Take it away Laura!

Let me introduce myself. My name is Laura Abigail, I'm 20 years old. I'm a concert, stills and fashion photographer. I started retouching pictures for other photographers at age 14 and I've been retouching everyday since. I'm almost always the youngest concert photographer and only girl in the frontstage. At age 17 I bought my first camera, and that's where it all began.

On behalf of the entire creativeLIVE crew, I’d like to congratulate cL studio audience alumnae Annemie Tonken (front row, 3rd from left in the above photo) on her article published in Rangefinder Magazine this month! In her article entitled Democratizing Creative Education, Annemie describes her experiences as a creativeLIVEr both participating from her computer at home and as an in-person student during Bambi Cantrell’s Posing & Lighting workshop. Annemie shares insights from her interviews with cL co-founder Craig Swanson and cL instructors Zack Arias, Tamara Lackey, Penny De Los Santos, and Bambi Cantrell.

Thank you Annemie for spreading the word about creativeLIVE! We'd now like to turn the tables and invite all of you in our cL community to help US spread the word about things that inspire YOU. We are excited to announce a Call For Submissions for guest blog posts for the creativeLIVE blog!

Jeremy Cowart Announces New Ideas for Help-Portrait 2011

Posted on November 3, 2011 - 6:00am

Smiles. Tears. Laughter. Love. Hope. These are just some of the words that immediately come to mind when I think about Help-Portrait 2011, a global movement founded by our own Jeremy Cowart. The concept is simple. Help-Portrait is “a movement of photographers who are using their time, equipment and expertise to give back to those who are less fortunate.” Here’s how it works: 1. Find someone in need 2. Take their portrait 3. Print their portrait and 4. Deliver their portrait.

The official stats continue to blow me away. “In the last two years, more than 101,000 portraits have been given by 10,000 photographers and 12,000 volunteers. Help-Portrait is now a global movement in more than 1,000 locations in 54 countries.”

Tips from PDN PhotoPlus Expo & WPPI NYC

What a fantastic week at PDN PhotoPlus Expo and WPPI NYC! It was my first time attending any photography industry conference and I think my head is still spinning from all that I learned, people I met and the new fun toys I checked out. First I want to give a huge shout out to the numerous creativeLIVErs that I met! Putting faces to your chatroom and Twitter names was super cool. Thank you for sharing your stories and enthusiasm about how creativeLIVE has impacted your journeys. I’ve come home with an even greater understanding of the diversity, wealth of knowledge and spirit of our cL community.

My primary goal for the conference was to scope out and meet potential instructors for creativeLIVE, so I spent more time in seminars than on the trade show floor. Here is just a taste of my takeaways from a handful of instructors.
