Stop talking about your dreams and start building them.

If you (like me) are spending the waining hours of 2011 reflecting on last year's accomplishments and prioritizing your goals for the upcoming year, speaker Derek Sivers suggests you might increase your likelihood of follow through if you keep those goals to yourself.

Because our minds mistake talking and doing.

Zack Arias's Doppelgänger

Posted on December 23, 2011 - 2:01am

Day 119/365 - Zack Arias
So, you know Zack Arias, right? He's taught two workshops here at creativeLIVE? The first one was a Studio Lighting workshop and the second was on the Foundations of a Working Photographer? Maybe? He's the photographer with the beard? There ya go.

Anyways, at the end of Zack's Foundations of a Working Photographer workshop I took his portrait using bits of what I learned from his first workshop and bits of what he told me right then and there. I kinda had the light where I wanted it, but I didn't quite get the effect that I wanted. Zack picked up the light stand and without looking set it back down. I snapped the picture again and the picture on the left is basically SOOC. He knows his stuff.

After taking his picture, learning more about lighting, and growing my beard out for a couple months I decided I was going to repay Zack by shooting his doppelgänger. Me.

creativeLIVE Inverted Panorama: How Did John Greengo Do That?

Posted on December 16, 2011 - 9:19am

John Greengo asked all of us to bring a camera, tripod & 35mm lens to our office holiday party this week. But he wouldn't tell us why. John arrived early, set up some lights and did some test shots. He still wouldn't budge on revealing his secret group project! My curiosity was killing me as I tried to guess what it could be. Once everyone was there and we had enough cameras to bring John's vision to life, he spilled the beans and meticulously set up the group shot. Brilliant! How did he do it? Here's John's explanation:

What's the deal with this weird Panorama? This is an inverted self-timer panorama.

Innovative HDDSLR Video Gadgets & Accessories

Posted on December 15, 2011 - 8:00am

Last week I came across this video when looking into iPhone accessories for Jack Hollingsworth's upcoming iPhoneography workshop on creativeLIVE January 5-6, 2012. I'm super impressed by the CineSkate Camera Sliders as well as the fact that the company was started with a Kickstarter campaign. They are spot on with the notion that, "Video quality is no longer limited by resolution, but instead by stabilization." I enlisted some filmmaker friends to help me hunt down the most innovative HDDSLR gadgets and accessories on the market today. Here are some of their favorites along with demo videos I rounded up:

Join Jack Hollingsworth in Seattle - Call for Video Submissions!

I had the pleasure of hearing World Lifestyle, Travel, Portrait and Stock Photographer Jack Hollingsworth speak at Photo Plus Expo in New York this October. During his engaging presentation on New Media Marketing for Next Generation Photographers, Jack described his iPhone epiphany, which happened on a photo shoot in the Caribbean (you'll have to wait 'til his workshop to hear the full story...). In less than one year since, Jack has taken on the world of iPhoneography by storm. With over 50,000 iPhone images in his personal library and growing daily, Jack says he now loves shooting with his iPhone more than his DSLR. In fact, Jack set a personal goal to be shooting commercial photography with his iPhone by this time next year! I'm totally on board with Jack's statement that, "Flickr gave iPhoneography its roots, Instagram gave iPhoneography its wings" and I'm a huge fan of his Instragram feed.

Get pumped for two jam-packed days of iPhoneography with Jack Hollingsworth on creativeLIVE! Are YOU an iPhone fanatic? Jack is on the hunt for SIX iPhoneographers to join him in his studio audience January 5-6, 2012!

The Power of Self-Assignments by Matthew Kunce

Posted on December 8, 2011 - 6:00am

(c) Matthew Kunce Photography

First let me introduce myself. My name is Matthew Kunce and I am a relatively new photographer. I got my first DSLR mid-year 2010 and discovered a passion for photography. Since that time I have been teaching myself photography in any way that I can: reading books & blogs, watching videos, taking pictures, participating in creativeLIVE events. The method that has helped me grow the most in photography is self-assignments.

While I did spend a good deal of time taking pictures of whatever I could it was not until I started setting goals around certain skills and deliberately practicing those skill that I started to feel more comfortable in my photography skills. It helped me see and understand the concept I was working on with more clarity. Setting self-assignments helps you focus on what you want to learn. And then gives you a basis to review what you did, how you did and what you need to work on next.

Join Zach & Jody Gray in Seattle - Call for Video Submissions!

Posted on December 6, 2011 - 6:00am

I first met Zach & Jody Gray last summer as they kicked off the PASS tour in Seattle with David Jay and Promise Tangeman. Zach and Jody gave a talk on branding and marketing and I fell in love with their genuine charisma. It's rare to find a couple who are not just partner photographers, but also partner educators. After the PASS event Craig Swanson, Susan Roderick and I walked away smiling at each other saying, YES - we have to get Zach and Jody on creativeLIVE! Well, I'm happy to announce that the time has come!

creativeLIVE Community Profile: Tyler Babin

Posted on December 1, 2011 - 6:00am

Tyler Babin is one of creativeLIVE's youngest studio audience members yet. We were so impressed by his youthful enthusiasm in his submission video that we had to have him here in person for Matthew Jordan Smith's Beauty and Fashion Photography workshop. In his follow up Vlog above, 18-year old Tyler shares behind the scenes insights about his creativeLIVE experience. In this creativeLIVE Community Profile, I asked Tyler to share his own photography story and answer a few additional questions. Thanks Tyler!
