David Nightingale – How Did He Create That Image?

Posted on October 4, 2011 - 6:00am

This Friday October 7th David Nightingale kicks off his free live online 3-day Dramatic Post-Production Workshop on creativeLIVE. David is combining two of his most popular workshops for you. He’ll explore his process of Creating Dramatic Images from before he even picks up a camera to step-by-step examples of his post-production workflow. On day three David will teach us all about his HDR shooting & post-production techniques that range from subtle to edgy. Get ready to think about HDR in an entirely new way!

I asked David to share the before & afters of a few images that he’ll be referencing in the workshop. I thought it would be fun for all of YOU to try to deconstruct his processes before the workshop begins. So for each of the following sets of images I challenge you to post your answers to David’s questions in the comments below. Then you’ll have to wait to find out how David actually created these images during the workshop! How many can you get right?

Set #1
One of the things David will be talking about during the workshop is how post-production can be seen as similar to lighting, i.e. you're applying the lights AFTER the shot rather than before.

Q: In this image, how could you achieve a similar effect by lighting the original scene?

Set #2
David will be using the following image during the black and white section of the workshop.

Q: What is unusual about the post-production for this image?

Set #3
David will walk us through the creation of this image during the HDR section.

Q: How many original exposures did David use to create this HDR image?

I invite you to get to know David, his wife Libby and their amazing work by exploring their Chromasia website, David's online photography and post-production tutorials, and their award-winning photo blog where they share their dramatic images - both the original capture and final edit. Be prepared to say to yourself ‘WOW – How Did He Create That Image?’

I look forward to reading your answers in the comments! Be sure to enroll for David’s workshop HERE if you haven’t already. I’ll see you Friday in the chat room!

Thankfully,Online Handbags it appears as though Valentino’s accessory designers arenOnline Handbagst as behind the times as I am. Mad Men‘s midcentury style has influenced designersOnline Handbags far and wide since the show’s advent in 2007, and with the fourth season set to debut on AMC this Sunday, Online Handbagsthe show’s fashion caché is unlikely to subside anytime soon.
Fall runways saw a nearly universal embrace of 60s style, including shoes and accessories like the Valentino Jolie Framed Patent Bag. This prim, streamlined handbag would be right at home on Betty Draper’s gloved arm.

Good samples!

Set 1: Hard to believe such an improvement in contrast and detail could be added by just changing lighting

Set 2: The local edits (dodging and burning) at least brought out wonderfully the graffiti on the wall. But that is supposedly not very unusual.

Local contrast added via one-shot HDR?

Also it looks like it is not a straight B&W conversion, as some part of the image blue colour becomes very light white and elsewhere same blue is mapped to darker tone -> it looks like a composition of few B&W conversions.

Set 3: I'd guess that this scene demands at least two exposures (interior & sky), but maybe only one could do if there is enough dynamic range on the raw file. Maybe the photo above "before" is actually a very dark version of the original good one just to fool us...

Looking very much forward for the course! It's getting onto evening here in Finland, just hope I can stay awake whole session :-)

Cheers, Erkki

I am so excited for this workshop. I'm going to try to watch as much as possible while baby is napping and then hope to catch the reruns (hopefully there will be reruns) later at night. David's work is absolutely spectacular and if I could just learn one or two things from this I would be so thankful!
