Q&A with Kevin Kubota

Kenna: What story does your family always tell about you?
Kevin: OMG, my younger sister ALWAYS tells the story of when we were kids and we were out playing - doing one of our typical runs through the neighborhood curbside trash to find stuff to play with (no kidding). We found an old wheelchair and with some friends we thought it would be fun to push each other around in it. Apparently we came upon a small "hill" that dropped off in to a banana patch (I grew up in Hawaii). I convinced my sister to get in the chair and "trust me" and then I proceeded to release her off the hill, crashing uncontrolled in to the stalks of bananas. I have no recollection of this.

We also fondly remember the time when Clare and I were making our big move from Los Angeles to Bend, OR. We cleaned out our apartment and had a moving truck coming the next day - with a good friend committed to drive with me from California to Oregon. Our last night in the apartment, after all our things were in boxes, we both realized we were quite itchy. Really frickin' itchy. We decided to head down to the local urgent care center and sure enough, we had scabies. What the heck? Who gets scabies these days?! We had to slather up in this gooey lotion and sleep in sleeping bags to keep it contained. The next day, when all our friends came by to say their final good byes, we couldn't even hug anyone for fear of infecting them and they would hesitantly stand at our door and wave nervously, "Um, good luck!"

Kenna: What three things can you not live without?
Kevin: Well, since you said things and not people, I'll have to say my iPhone (not surprising), my Macbook, and my mountain bike. They all expand my horizons, take me places I've never been, and just make me happy.

Kenna: What was your favorite Halloween costume as a kid?
Kevin: Don't go there.
Kenna: Oh we'll go there by the end of your workshop! ; )

Kenna: What's your guilty pleasure?
Kevin: I'm a foodie! I love to eat and I love exotic, fun, adventurous, and delicious food. I'll try just about anything. I even at a huge fried tarantula in Cambodia. It was disgusting, but I wouldn't trade the experience for $10. Maybe for $20.

Kenna: What's the most unusual thing that has ever happen on a location shoot?
Kevin: We were shooting a boudoir portrait deep down inside the bowels of an underground lava cave. We had a half-naked woman lying on a bear skin surrounded by about 100 little candles. Out of the dark of the cave comes a family hiking with two young kids. The mother grabbed her kids by the hand and hurried them past us. All we could do was laugh. Trying to explain would have been futile. Maybe if we hadn't spilled the ox blood everywhere...

Kenna: If you could know the answer to any question besides "What is the Meaning of Life," what would it be?
Kevin: Why do people in parking lots think that fast food trash and cigarette butts will somehow biodegrade when thrown out of the door of their parked car?

Kenna: What's the best gift you've ever received?
Kevin: When my second son, Nikko, was born, I got to help deliver him. That's right, get down in there, grab the head and pull. It was the most amazing thing I've ever experienced and I get choked up every time I think about it. Don't ask me to talk about it cause I'll just cry and then I'll feel stupid.
Kenna: Oh Kevin, we LOVE tears at creativeLIVE!

Kenna: What's the movie you have watched more than any other movie?
Kevin: Moulin Rouge and Roam. It's a tie.

Kenna: If you could name one person in your career who has been the most influential, who would that be and why?
Kevin: Ahh, see, I know what you are trying to do here!!! Can I just say happy birthday to my buddy Benjamin Edwards? He's celebrating on Thursday when I start my program :-)
Kenna: Of course you can wish your buddy Benjamin a happy birthday! We'll give him three cheers from folks 'round the world. : )  Thanks Kevin!
