D800 w/ 18-200 DX lens

Right now I have a D300S body and have the D800 on order. What will the results be using the older DX 18-200 lens? Will I be getting the max from the D800 or will it be a waste of money unless I get new lens?

I don’t think you should use the old lens! Try buying one with a much wider aperture! I have been using this model ‘Nikon D800’ for years now and I am using a 15-400 lens! Unless you are planning on shooting something more than amateur stuff, I’d suggest a new one! Thank you! here

Starting on page 79 of the D800 User's Manual it explains most of what you are looking for. You can use your lens on the camera and set the 800 to accept it automatically (Auto DX Crop.) I believe this manual is the largest Nikon has produced for any of their cameras. The D800 is a mind blower of a camera for $3K.

It would not make sense to use a DX lens on an FX body. What other fx lens do you have ? If none and this is basically a walk around use - get the 24-120 afs vr f4. The combo with a D800 works pretty much well enough for walk around. It would be also fine for most areas. Event work is do able with this.

Any dx lens will drop the resolution down to about 15mp I believe.I use my 1.8-50mm mainly with my D800

It will crop down the D800 sensor to a DX size to match the lens, so you will not be getting the most out it. You would need to switch to FX lenses to get the most out of a FX body.
