John - do you know if the Westcott Apollo Orb can be used with a grid? Or is it only an 'ungridded' modifier?

I've not seen a grid from Westcott. No idea if they plan to offer one. I don't recall seeing grids for any of the Apollo series.

UPDATE: Westcott has just announced a grid for the ORB available in late April.

Hi John!
Just wondered about Christa's comment re- have a steamer on set as you don't want to be editing out wrinkles all day:)
What the heck is the steamer? never heard or seen this before.

Thanks & you guys all rocked, so worth getting up early in lil ole NZ;)

A steamer is like a clothes iron, but instead of a flat plate for ironing it has a nozzle that just pumps out steam. They are used for removing wrinkles, for cleaning, and a few other things. Do a Google search on Clothes Steamer and you should be able to find a number of different types.

I haven't watched all the videos yet but but so far I have't seen/heard any mention re WB. Everyones images look amazing and consistent in the previews - did you all AWB, custom WB, set to Daylight or use any WB tools like grey cards pre shoot??

Christa used Auto White Balance throughout the workshop. We did not use a gray card or Color Checker. I don't know what changes she may have made to WB in post processing, though.

What was the items used to build that fan that was used. That is cool and will be very useful. Just need the list of materials used to build that fan. Also was 1/3 CTO gel used? Thanks!

Sorry, I'm not sure what you are referring to about building a fan. We used a BlowIt fan for most of the workshop: http://blowitfans.com.

I believe that we used a 1/8 CTO gel on the video light to warm it up slightly. We didn't go to a deeper orange because it was being mixed with the daylight coming through the windows.

What was the lighting set up used for the grey background shoots?

For the gray background we used a Westcott Apollo Orb with an Alien Bee 800 strobe head. http://www.fjwestcott.com/newgear/apollo/2336.cfm We used it in the pre-shoot at the hotel and on day 2 at the CL studio.

Christa has been using the original Canon 5D, but for this workshop she got a 5DmkII. Students had a combination of 5Dii, 7D, and a couple of Nikons (but I don't know the models). 50mm, 85mm, and 24-70 lenses.

What seamless backgrounds do you recommend? I loved the grey you guys were using, what shade was it?

I actually don't know the color of that roll, it has been around for a while. Christa likes Dove Gray, which is a little warmer than the roll we used this weekend.
