For those of us who have always been hesitant to speak our minds for a variety of reasons, like myself in the wake of a traumatic brain injury in another land, photography is a vehicle to enable ourselves to speak: softly, demurely, intently, at the top of our lungs, and best of all, in code. Every image is interpreted by those who view it, yet if they hear my message, great. If they hear their own message, even better.

Pure happiness. I don't consider myself a beautiful person, so creating beautiful pictures fulfills a craving. I see things differently than other people and I get such a rush when I win a contest or someone notices a job well done. I love the science of it. I spend hours taking a picture and comparing the changes when I change the aperature or move the speedlight to make it "just right" I fight the urge daily to quit my job and head for the mountains to take pictures. I'm stuck right now because my kids wont let me photograph them any more and my job leaves me very little time to do any free lance stuff. Not sure whether I need to take another class or get a legitimate degree. I've got so many questions. The only thing I know for sure is how happy I am when I am taking or editing pics.

Photography is how I fully express myself. I have never been a word person, visuals have always been how I communicate best. I came back to photography after a hiatus and 10 years as a graphic designer to find that I was full of things that I needed to express and the only way they came out was through photography. I can't imagine living without it ever again.

I'm very new to photography but it is something i've always had an interest in. I had a little kiddie 110 camera when I was 10 & would take pics. I was always the person to photograph at events. I finally decided to pursue it seriously & i'm in love with every "good" photo I take now. Photos are memories! They create moments that you can relive again and again. Photography is the window to our lives! It's such an important profession and one that will never go away.

My father was a traditional photography back in the early 70's and thru the 80's. I used to be his camera caddie. I was only 13 years old at the time and really enjoyed it. My job was to hold two cameras, a Mammiya twin lens, and a Hasselblad. My father would take whatever camera he needed during the ceremony from me. I didn't understand half of what he was doing until later in life. He was a professional photographer. The way he posed, the way he held his cameras, the way he set up his portable studio, the way he handle the crowds that were taking picture on his set was amazing to watch. I regret not taking it serious back then and having to learn everything from schools, seminars and hands on. I miss my dad, he passed December 15 2011. I love photography because of him, because he loved his family and worked his ass off being creative every weekend. I had the privilege of going through all my fathers old photos and it made me cry. I wasn't crying because my father was gone, it was his body of work . I can only imagine what my father could do with a DSLR today. His passion, traditional knowledge, and love for photography really showed in all of his photos. I have the passion now for this crazy trade and only wish I could of a shared more with Pops. I remember some of his last words to me before his passed. He said " Be a manual photographer son, the art is disappearing, with all the new automatic settings, people are letting the camera dictate the composition".

I don't have a deep answer for this one other than that it felt right to me. When I was younger I use to read all my dad's technical books on lighting and photography and grew up using disposable camera and Polaroids to shoot whatever caught my attention. Photography was the only thing in my life that made sense to me. I tried to go to school for whatever career you can think of; Social worker, radiology, psychology, acting (was a brief one month of my life. lol), so on and so forth.. Everything put me to sleep in the classroom, but when I finally went to school for photography, everything I heard about the topic I would understand it so clearly. When I'm in studio or location, I would get this high, what I would call my "photohigh".. (Yes it's legal) from all the creativity and the positive energy involved in creating something awesome and trying to push myself further.. Its a challenge behind the camera as well as everything involved with it... But it's not worth it if it isn't.

If I had to choose one word, it would be "engage."

To me, it means fully engaging each moment when I might otherwise choose to withdraw. It's about stepping outside of myself, my own problems, my own distractions. It's being truly alive and aware, but more than that, it's being willfully involved with and *connected to* everything and everyone around me in this life.

And finally, it's about engaging others--the viewers--in a similar experience of awareness and connection.

From that point we both can move to any place and so its a point in our liner life. One other area that photography is meaningful to me, is that is healing. It is healing to me as I slow down and center in the moment. Photography makes me know that I am alive. I can look at the smallest things around me and feel awe. But when I view them through my camera's eye, I'm in Wonderland. At times making images is like a transfusion of life's blood. Working - and playing - with my images on the computer is like watching it emerge from the developer back in the day. I really like photography's versatility. It can be enjoyed at so many levels, from a simple snapshot of a loved one, to document a wedding for a family event or record a war as social history and on to pack shots for commerce before we even think about using it as an art tool!

I did commercial photography for years and was so bored I nearly gave it up until I decided to take it up as a hobby as well. My art photography helped my commercial work and vice versa.

When digital came along, it gave more control because everything could be done in house and I fell in love with photography all over again. We are so lucky today, our photography is ONLY limited by our imagination!

I t wasn't like me not to not to be able to do something I loved. With all my medical bills & not working money was tight & unfortunately my Mother died around that time. She left me some money & I wanted to do something with it I knew she would be proud of me for & would love. SO I bought my 1st digital DSLR. I was like a sponge learning all I could. Was able to start charging & making more money I put right back in to equipment. My regret is she isn't here to see my work. She loved photos & would have gone crazy for all the ones I take of her grand kids as they have grown up. I cherish the reactions I get from families when they see there photos. As a small child I quickly developed a passion for creativity. I would often spend my days building a fort in the back yard, climbing a tree to see where it lead, or simply pretending I was a fireman or race car driver.

Discovering a talent for photography and the creative processes behind it lead me on a journey to seek out and capture the true, genuine moments in my photography. The images I create have a very unique story-telling quality and have been best described as playful, spontaneous, honest, and authentic. It is with a personal drive and passion that I approach every client, every job, every assignment, and every personal project.

I’ve been blessed so far in where life has lead me, and I’ll continue down this creative path as long as my two feet will carry me. I feel that each and every one of us has a story to tell… this is how I’m telling mine.

As an artist and designer, photography has always been an extension of my art and vision, and initially, it was just another form of media that allowed me to express that. I've been taking photos since I was a child and found that I had to have my camera with me when I was doing other things because I was constantly seeing something unique that I wanted to preserve or recreate, either in film, paint or other media, and photography was the fastest way for me to capture that. The documentation aspect of photography fascinates me - capturing places and moments in time that will never exist again. For me, there's no difference between my photos and my paintings.

I've had an unusual ride with photography. My life has taken me to Mexico where I work as one of the town's photographers taking photos of the events, graduations, weddings and Quincearnas. What makes it usual is I work just like the old timer photographer here selling the photos back to the people. Working for pesos. At first it was hard to charge the people, but as I needed the money and it was only fair to the other town photographer not to give my product away, it was essential. In doing so many doors opened for me, I learned the culture from the inside out, I learn to trust the people that they would pay me, but most of all I learned while the Mexicans are poor that they are in so many ways much richer than more developed nations. I see so much on the street and have a family wherever I go in this small town. I have been accepted as one of them. I make very little, but feel like a millionaire for the closeness of the community I feel here and the generosity I have been shown. So, I would say photography means a connection with people for me!

Is a form of self confirmation that i am good at something. And i can achieve be something. Also it's that so many things can be seen from so many different angles

Photography to me is capturing the memories, and the moments. My favorite photos to me are the ones I take of my pets. Most are taken with my phone camera (the best camera is the one you have!), but they are so dear to my heart because I have captured one moment of time of how cute or funny they are. It's something I want to NEVER forget, and I want to share with everyone. That's why I take photos for others, so they may have something near and dear to their heart to keep forever. My photography is a way for me to capture God (or you could say capture light). I believe God reveals Himself to us everyday through each person, each situation, each environment. I am not always optimistic but I do believe that my photography is a very cathartic way for me to tell in individuals story no matter the good or the bad so long as it is honest. Honesty is always interesting if you know how to tell the story and are willing to be as vulnerable as the subject. My heart is to allow my photography to reveal the beauty of life even in the mundane. I have so much to learn about photography but I know that even though my work doesn't communicate all that I want now, I will learn how to make my photos speak to others and tell them a story. Thanks so much for reading. Becky

Photography, for me, is a visual diary capturing moments that I may never write about even if I want to or mean to. Having lost 2 of my children as infants I realized how very precious each moment can be and how you can never get them back. My healing journey began when I started trying to take meaningful pictures. I wanted to be able to capture moments in a great way, that would speak to me and others and tell the story of those I love the most.

As time has gone by I realize that there is more to the story than just the people, the backgrounds, the colors, even the sounds. Years from now when I walk down memory lane I want to see in my pictures everything I was feeling at the time I snapped the shutter and I want to be in charge of those details. Learning and improving in my photography skills will help me to do that. This seminar is helping me do that. Thank YOU!

I'm having the wonderful opportunity of teaching my living children why I love to capture these moments and they are learning right along with me. It's kind of like a visual legacy of our moments and memories.

Recently I realized how uptight I've been about getting all the technical aspects perfect, and the show today reminded me how I can see that reflected back at me from the faces of those I photograph. Going forward I want to stay true to the moments, the colors, even the sounds and not miss a minute. Hopefully later that will be what I see and what others see when looking at my photographs.

I truly believe photography can heal the soul from a lot of hurt and I have had the joy of experiencing that and continue to do so. Kristy

my photography is my way to preserve memories and moments in life. To explain a time, or way of life. I am also a photographer for a volunteer fire dept. I capture the hard work, training and way of life of a firefighter. On scene I capture the emotion..loss,sorrow and sometimes joy when a loved one is found to be alright and alive. My photography to my way of telling a story of the events in a persons life, or the events of my life time.

I take photos so that when I am much older and have trouble remembering things, I can look back on my photos and they will hopefully bring back memories. I take photos so that the ones I love can do the same. I take photos so that my family, and those around me, know that I care about them, and so that they can see the beauty that I see in them. I take photos now, as there are so many I wish I had taken in the past. I wish I had more photos of my Grandmother, who I loved so much. I wish I had more photos of my Grandfather, who died when I was much too young. Photography is my way of connecting to the world around me. My way of taking in it's beauty, and being able to share it with those I love.

A few years ago I did not pay close enough attention to the details and experienced a catastrophe in my life. I turned to photography seriously to help myself through hard times and now see the details. I enjoy it so much when someone wants to hang my art on their wall - I feel so humbled. I also love any excuse to watch wildlife and travel. Photography allows me that pleasure.

Photography has always been a part of my life from when I was a little girl. I have had all types of camera's from Instamatics to my first SLR a Praktica EE2. I have recently taken early retirement from a very stressful career in banking and spend a lot of my time taking pictures with my new DSLR. It gives me hours of pleasure and keeps my geeky technical mind active. I have many compliments on my photos and am becoming more confident in my skills and have been approached to take photos for a pre school. Who knows this wonderful hobby could now become my new career!

Besides the opportunity to become a time keeper by capturing moments and creating what I call a visual resume of my life; photography has become a very important activity in my life, not only since it's my only income, but because it keeps me going.

10 years ago Tinnitus came into my life (an inner ear damage due to loud noises which causes me to hear pink noise like sound in both ears 24/7 and is incurable) The fisrt year was hell and, like many others with tinnitus I considered suicide. Although there are many other things that are way worst than T, living with this is not a walk in the park.

I lost my job, my car, my apartment and all my belongins. Before I gave up my apartment I stayed there with no furniture, no TV, no radio, no computer all alone becasue I couldn't stand noise at all, not even the sound of the wind.

Do not know why, but after one year unemployed one of the first things I got when I got some money in my pocket was a camera and I found peace in photography.

The thing is, with photography i focus more on what I see and not in what I hear.

I've always loved photography, but since T (Tinnitus) it has become my passion, my escape, my hiding from this noise that sometimes still drives me crazy.

I have events this weekend and can't see the whole seminar and I'm very sorry for this becasue I admire Rick and Chase has become a huge fountain of inspiration.

One quick advice.... more than 40% of the world population has some level of Tinnitus (From a very low zzzzzzz to something described as a Harley motor in the ears) so, when using headphones, keep it down.

Thank you

I just wrote this to describe my photography...
Artistic photography is a very personal form of creative expression. With my images, I take a very inner part of myself and put it on display for the world to view. A picture may be worth a thousand words...But an artistic image is worth more than words...It takes with it a piece of the photographer's heart! ♥

Living in NY ... life is always on the fast lane and too many times too many of us miss opportunities because of busy schedules that we often overbook on purpose to feel important or to fulfill our dreams. Whatever the place is, formal or casual, wedding or rolling out of bed with my 3 year old... every single one of those moments cannot be redone or replaced. Photography means capturing those moments that fill in the details to a mental memory or adding to the memory because it was something we were to busy to overlook. Hopefully I can make them images that stop a person in their busy schedule to just sit and reminisce on a memory or be in awe of something they overlooked.... in turn changing their life to be more aware of their surroundings and the things and people that they love. That is what photography means to me.

Ever since I was twelwe I never got out of the house without a camera. I didn't think about the „why“ at that time, I just needed it with me as much as I needed a pen and a piece of paper. I recorded what I liked around me with both tools – they were the enhancers, the magnifiers, the proof there is so much beauty that I can focus on (instead of – what felt like sad stories at the time). So, I guess photography was a sort of escape into an inspiring world yet more real than my imagination, more down to earth than my other tool – pen and paper. It took me years to realize photography is not just an escape, not just a healing tool – it's a choice of what meaning I give to my surroundings. My camera helped me to learn more about the importance of focus in life, about how everything is clearer once the unnecessary information (disturbing things I can't change) in the background is put away, the influence of the colours, position and above all how there is light – everywhere, no matter how tiny it may seem there always is a source of goodness, inspiration, joy, the reason to smile and appreciate the moments on this amazing planet...

As an introvert by nature (or by choice?), photography is my expressive outlet. I can make bold or subtle or even tender statements from behind the lens in a slow and deliberate way. I also find that with my camera in hand, I can focus (no pun intended) my otherwise scattered, somewhat hyper personality and, when I manage to pull a nice shot out of the camera -- especially one that doesn't need much Photoshop -- I feel good about myself. The camera is my therapist.

Photography for me is how I tell stories. Growing up on the West Coast, I would tell stories of the West to my friends in College in the New York New Jersey area. The old growth forest of the Pacific North West or the animals of Yellowstone. I want to encourage people to travel outside of that 25 square mile bubble that we live in. See the world for themselves and bring everybody just a little closer together through the experience. That's what photography means for me.
