As Dorean said prime lenses are usually faster lenses that will offer a shallow depth of field than zoom lenses. Also primer lenses are usually sharper and less expensive than it's zoom counter part.

If you get a "prime" lens, meaning one that just has one focal length, it usually has a larger maximum aperture, so you can shoot in less light and get shallower depth of field. If neither of those things matter to your style of shooting you probably don't need to mess with it
