Making your own beauty products at home is easier than you might imagine. While you may not be able to get away to that tropical island of your fantasies THIS YEAR, your fruity lip gloss can transport you there with each dreamy application.
If you are a crafter/maker with a well-stocked supply closet and kitchen pantry, chances are you have nearly everything you need to make this pineapple balm that feels and smells like a spa day on the beach.
What you need:
2 Tbsp. Shea Butter
2 Tbsp. Virgin Coconut Oil
2 Tbsp. Beeswax
2 Tsp. Pineapple flavoring
Chap stick blanks or empty tins, pots etc. (washed and completely dry)
Measuring cup and spoons
Microwave (or double boiler)
Optional decorative elements like Washi tape, stickers, adhesive labels etc.
Combine the coconut oil, Shea butter and beeswax in a microwave-safe measuring cup in the microwave. Heat on regular high for 30-second increments, stirring between each, until the mixture has melted together into a clear liquid.
You could use a double boiler for this step, but as the weather gets warmer, keeping the house (and stovetop) cool can make a significant difference in your overall comfort level.
Quickly add the pineapple flavoring (candy grade flavoring can be found at many fancy food shops, high-end grocery stores, or online, and comes in a wide variety of flavors!) while the wax and oil are hot.
Mix together until incorporated. If your mixture begins to cool and harden, re-melt it in the microwave while you grab the containers you plan on filling with the balm.
Place your prepared (washed and thoroughly dried) chap stick blanks (found online) and/or clean, upcycled jars, pots and empty tins or pots on a plate. For more tips on sanitizing your containers, check out Make Your Own B
Carefully pour your warm liquid gloss into each. Don’t worry if you overflow your chap stick blanks slightly. A spatula can scrape off any excess hardened lip balm and be re-melted and poured into a new pot.
Use pineapple stickers, washi tape or home-made labels to adorn your containers when the balm has cooled completely. Any craft or home store worth its salt will have plenty of decorative choices that appeal to you sense of style.
