Adobe Photoshop Integration: Diffused Glow

I've got this shot took a long time ago as part of a photo fusion in florida mentioned another great place to dio live training bomb beach, florida in january I will be teaching at put a fusion of o t o fusion umm dot orga believe it is and they do a lot of model shoots, fantastic portrait and figure photographers and and I teach infrared and portrait and all sorts of really fun stuff there anyway we're going we want to do a diffuse glow we know that we can use our clarity in here and you'll notice that this clarity is starting to give that wonderful little color spill or that light spill around the edges of the item of our model here, but I can't do a lot of control on it and it's also global to the entire file and it's softening up the entire file and what I want to do is I want to do some exaggerate exaggeration of the light and tone on this model and I want to do some a glamour glow to it, so I've taken it where I've got like the detail in it, I could soften the background, but rig...

ht now I'm going to go right into photoshopped and dio glamour technique that I love actually call it my charge more money effect it's a very cool effect and for that I'm actually going to open up I'm not an object I'm going to open it up as a image what now calls shift open uh image and what I'm going to dio this particular effect is I'm going to do a diffuse glow you can see that we were able to do a glamour glow yesterday when we did that work you could do a tremendous amount of skin softening but what I want to do here is I'm going to take advantage of one feature in photo shop it's been in there for million years very few people know about it and it's very cool in this idea especially of reshaping the light on something like a portrait and it's based upon duplicating is that it's one of the main concepts in photo shop we're gonna duplicate the current layer we're going to come up here and filter blur gazi and blur it we wanted to blurt enough that we're softening the edges but not so much that we can no longer see a nose a mouth a shoulder or arm so it depending upon the resolution of your final this is ah low res file so it's a pretty high whole thing here will say somewhere around twenty is going to be what works for me and then what we're gonna do is we're gonna blend this blurred copy back in with our original okay so far so good you were with me if I take and just change the blend mode not the blend mode, but the opacity of this layer how do I change the a pastie of a layer five of something like the move to elective number keys? So I just tapped the five key and that's giving me a fifty percent version of it that's a traditional diffuse glow that would often be done in camera you take a diffuse piece of glass, you put it on top of your lens and you shoot through it. This is what you get. You're shooting through a blurred copy of it or defuse piece of glass, so that is a diffuse glow that's not really what we're going for if I come up here and I changed the opacity back two hundred and change the blend mode now, these blend modes, I think probably been wilmore has done an entire class on blend boats here, a creative live if I'm not mistaken and it deserves it, did he have indeed he has and he's probably good he learned everything that he knows from me so bastard. Now ben is an awesome, awesome instructor, ex co author of mine of books we love each other deeply bastard. But in terms of this, I'm sure in his class he's goingto mention that in the olden days, blend modes were all alphabetical, meaning that nobody in the world except for ben knew what they did because there is no order in terms of what they did now they're organized based upon what they do, so the ones that are in the word that start with the word darken these can only darken whatever is on this layer that I'm changing right now can only darken what is below it, including multiply multiplies one of the main ones that you would use in this mall right here. These that start with the word lightened can only lighten they only have permission to lighten, meaning that any dark values in that file are not going to contribute to what's below. Let's, go back to this one multiply for those of you who are old enough if you took two thirty five millimeter slides, stuck them together, put them into one slot in a slide carousel and projected them on a wall that would be multiply, you would have doubled up the density of those slides and then projected them on the wall. The problem with that analogy, of course, is most people don't know what a slide a carousel or a projector is, but that's what it's doing screen is the primary one that you would use in this category, but these right here overlay and soft light these both lighten and darken and they're incredibly powerful, and the overland soft light blend modes are the two main ones you'd use in this area here and they're fantastic whatever his lighter on the file on the layer that you're currently on will lighten what's below it whatever is darker on that layer will darken what's below it so they're known as the dodge and burn blood modes with contrast blend modes and the great thing about that is that if you come up here and we'll use an exaggerated one will say um overlay it's doing this beautiful um rich diffuse glow around the model here well leaving it still razor sharp it's actually do another one overlay in soft light is more subtle again we're getting a glow on the model and yet it's still sharp prom is because it's a dodge in bern blend mode it's darkening wherever it's darker it's darker if you look around the background it's actually lightening up the edges let's actually take another one here we're going to go screen screen is going to subtract this layer from this layer here all they can do is lighten so it's not doing any dark values in this layer aren't contributing at all it's just lightening the file and in this case much like that other one this one is now doing too much lightning to it it's lightning the entire thing that overland soft light we're doing too much they were plugging up the shadows so we've gone in here in the photo shop we've duplicated are layer we've come up here and we've changed this blurred copy tow a blend mode like screen and now we're going to take advantage of something that only photoshopped khun d'oh and only riel pixel layers khun d'oh okay, we can't do this as a smart filter recipe and that is we're going to come up here to the effects panel and we're gonna go to our blending options blending options and we're gonna go to a little little known section of the blending options called blend if the advanced blending blend if sliders and first off you'll notice here that what we've got is we have the screen blowed mode that we already said we have everything else that you normally think of with your layer styles palate but we're in the advanced blending blend if sliders and why this is ridiculously powerful and if you guys are real nice maybe after lunch will also show how to combine bracketed exposures with this trick again something you can't do in a cr but basically what you have the ability to do is either on this layer or the underlying layer you have the ability to tell ask put a shop which you please hide a portion of this layer based upon luminosity that's what this grace you can also do a basic red green or blue don't get me started but I can ask it would you please hide all the darks in this layer or please hide all the lights in this layer zooming back out what I can do is I could come up here and I can ask it would you please hide the darks in this file and you go well that's interesting she's being eaten alive by amoebas then you zoom up and you go ok she's being eaten alive by one bit transition pixelated amoebas so this is actually a completely useless feature to me thank you very much for sharing it and it's actually is a very very useful feature because what that is doing is and listen kind of zoom in so we can see what we're doing go back to our advance blending options is even though right now it's a harsh transition between what's visible and what's invisible let's actually turn off our background so you can see what it's doing so this slider is hiding what's on this layer based upon luminosity why that is extremely cool is if you know the secret mickey mouse club handshake that slider right there which you probably noticed okay has a little pre pixel line in the centre of it which obviously tells you if you hold on a special modifier key you can split that slider and you can ask photo shop would you please give me a perfectly smooth transition between what's visible and what's not making the world's most elaborate selection without doing any selecting so let's actually take this back to where it was turned back on our background so we can see what we have this ability to dio we have this layer that we want to used to reshape the light in this scene I say in this case where it's the darks and here are lightening up the dark's too much so I can come over here I can I don't want them to contribute to the mix I just wantto add highlights around things like the models cheek and shoulder and stuff like that I hold down my options are all key and I can split this slider and what I'm doing is I'm actually reshaping the light after the fact which technically is called bitchin I've just created this layer and because I'm in the screen blend mode I can actually down to the actual shape of the light on this model I can come up here and say I just want it on the nose and the cheek and on the shoulder and I can come up here and find two knit this is that charge more money effect that I love it gives you a huge amount of control something you'd never get in adobe camera and it's also incredibly easy um may even there's a set of sample actions I think on my facebook fan page if you like it and find the freebies because I have a whole set of actions that I do in there that are called under the photo enhance um that are the action sampler, I think is up there and the soft focus screen click. It explains it to you. It does it for you lets you set the blur to it and it automatically does our little glow. You will find tune it by coming up here. And the great thing about this effect is it is procedural. It is completely pliable. You can come back after the fact and change any of these settings. It is completely non destructive and editable. So anything that you do with that advance blending, um set of sliders is not destructive confined. Tune it to your heart's content. Awesome, thanks, that was a little bit we're talking about fashion. We're talking about retouching that's. One of my favorite tips can't be done in a c are you starting a cr? Do your tango, bring it in to flutter shop and it simply is take the file duplicated, blur it, change its blend mode to something like screen, and then you're going to find two in those advanced blending sliders to get exactly where you want to shape that, like the old blend of love it.
