Ideal Client: Q&A
One of the questions that's kind of run through my mind a couple times, as your talking about Elle and finding her, how do you validate that she's actually at these places, that she would be a part of an Instagram group or a Facebook group? Because you're guessing, and you're trying to create this person, but so how do you confirm that?
That's great, trial and error. That's what nobody wants to hear. It's like, you're gonna waste a lot of time, you know? Let me tell you, and take a step back too, is that ideal clients also end up in places you don't expect. So let me just take this back, I've said this story, I'll say it again. I practice yoga, I went to, I signed up to this yogi commitment training, and so you had to do like 200 hours or something like that. And so, every Saturday, for like 10 weeks, we met all day. And we were 200 people, and we were broken up into groups of six. And as I'm sitting in groups of six, we start talking and introduce ourselves. Week one, we introduce o...
urselves, like what do we do, yadda yadda yadda. The next week, the girl comes after me, she says, oh, what do you do specifically? I said I'm a wedding photographer and this is what I do. And she checked out my stuff, that was it. Six weeks, eight weeks later, I get an email from somebody by the name of Blaine. And he says, hey Jasmine, you met my girlfriend Holly and I'm about to propose to her, but I need to confirm that you're available on this date for a wedding in Hawaii, because I can't propose to her without knowing that you're available. Ever since your yogi training, she said that nobody else could shoot the wedding except for you. I didn't go to yogi training to find a ride. And it happened. So you have to, it's a give and take. Have I gone to plenty of environments and spaces where I feel, like leave feeling less than, vacant, like a waste of time, I just wasted makeup, I'd rather be home with my husband and dog, watching Netflix, eating sweat, eating sweats, wearing sweats, wearing sweats, eating bad food, yeah. But then there are other times where I'm actually just in public, being myself, as a distinct representation of my business, and it works too. So it definitely balances. But you gotta be out. Expected or unexpected, being out is gonna be a good thing. Thank you.
Let's go into, if you have questions, we'll come back, but let's go into an online question and we'll see how it goes. Question, how do you find where your ideal customers hang out? So, Sara, well, we're gonna put ourselves first in their shoes. Like where does, where would Elle hang out? Probably places by the beach. And do I need to be by the beach to attract her, no. But does it help to maybe do cocktails at sunset and like, I'm doing market research, I'm seeing what they're wearing, I'm seeing what, you know the songs, there's always a certain song where you're outside and a good song comes on, and then all the girls in a certain demographic are, oh my god it's our song! As I get older, I find myself getting farther and farther removed from knowing what the song is. So I'm not gonna know how to ultimately attract the person I'm trying to attract, unless I'm in those environments. So how do you find where your ideal client customers hang out? Well one, a lot of trial and error. I did give five ways of places that you can find them online. And then, furthermore, you need to think about, how does Elle spend her weekend? Like, at farmer's markets, go to farmer's markets. Where is Elle online, she's on Etsy. Go to Etsy, see where the pressure points are, what are people talking about. Maybe you look, you have an Etsy hashtag on Slack. Like, why am I looking just at you, as if you just asked that question, I don't know. But either way, you have to get creative. And you have to understand that you won't know where they hang out until, one, you put yourself in their shoes, and two, you start experimenting. Let's go to another question online, and if anybody else has questions, we can dive into that. Is Jasmine posting as her business or as herself on Facebook in the groups that her ideal client, oh, is a part of? Great question, Amy, fantastic! Now, when I'm cognizant of it, I'm posting as my page, because you have two identities. And I use two different photos to indicate to myself what I'm doing. There are times where I will go to my own business page, and I type back in my personal profile, because I didn't click on the active page manager, which I think is so annoying. But when I'm cognizant, and I highly encourage everybody to interact in groups as your page, because you don't want people going to your personal page, you want them going to your business page. So be congizant of that, great seeming question. Is there another question, perfect!
You talk about how you need to respond to your ideal client.
In groups and things. I know that, a lot of times, I'll be in these groups, and people who are not my ideal client, people I know who would never pay for my services but just want lots of free information are in and engaging because they want lots of free information. How do you handle that?
With limitations, but I do participate. Because I understand that there are people who watch this whole day on CreativeLive, wrote all these notes, and they won't invest in the 30 day plan. Because well, I just, I opened the kimono, you didn't know what's coming. But the 30 days is gonna be the thing that actually they have taken action. There's gonna be, the vast majority of people watching will not do that. But I'm still sharing dissemination, I'm building trust. Because the people who are not participating actively are watching. I am a quiet watcher of groups. I wanna know who's the queen bee, I wanna know who follows who, I wanna know the dynamic, and when you position yourself as a place of authority and help, without wasting all day answering all these free questions, every so often, you make a consistent pattern. Or instead of you answering questions, you say, this is one thing that I discovered. I shared this on my blog, but I'm gonna give you a sneak peek here. It positions you as a place of authority willing to share your unique insights.
