Combining Photos and Vectors with Lesa Snider
So what we've got here is we've got an ongoing problem the full screen mode by tapping the f key a couple times we've got a lovely image here that is part photo in part victor okay, so I'm gonna pop back into kino for just a second to tell you a little bit more about vectors but ventures are different and that they're not made of pixels ok, so in doing this you can find some really great illustrations from online stock stock image companies or if you are familiar with the pinto you can draw them yourself so it's a great way to pare the rial with something a bit surreal for more interesting facts a great way to capture the surge in any kind of direct marketing direct advertising you have precious little time to capture somebody's attention so they'll actually read your copy creating a striking image using photos and vectors is another great way to capture attention so let's pop into kina real quick here I was press f again to get out of full screen mode and I will show you a few the oth...
er things that were going to create here so these are some other examples of pairing vectors with photos so let's talk this out briefly about what we're seeing here at the top left that is a photo being pushed through in vector illustration as a frame ok so that's a possibility using vectors as ornamental frames the image on the right has victor texture so all those swirls and everything that you see on top of the lady that's a vector that I've applied there, I see that effect in nearly every issue of rolling stone magazine in one ad or another, but the one at the bottom left we've got a photo shoved through another shapes that's the shape of the turtle so that's another option for using vectors and your photos and in the photo at the bottom, right has a victor background and foreground so that grass and butterflies and the, uh, speculate highlights in the background are all a vector case. We'll look at how to do that here's some more examples of stuff we're going to create this afternoon, the image of the top left I've pulled in a vector and changed its blending mode so that we're getting that basketball kind of frame effect that's where that's coming from and think about this, folks by this course, you're going to get these exercise files, which means you'll have these vectors, which could be very useful these air also additional products that you can sell on your photography business, especially the one of the top left the one at the bottom left is more in the graphic design room the shamrock she siara vector so I've brought that in the photo shop and I've applied color to the victor there in front of shop and changed its blending most that you can see through to the image of the really nice stout beer and that's kind of mean, I'm sorry about that, and then the image on the right, the obviously the victor is thie I have waves of color in the musical notes coming out of the computer, so this is a fake ad that I made. So this is good stuff in this class for both photographers and graphic designers, and to illustrate the point that the difference between a pixel based images and vector images is that pixel based images also called raster images are made from pixels, so if you zoom in, you're going to see the individual pixels square pixels that your image is comprised of normally the pixels air so small that you can't see them. But if you ever printed an image from the web there being enough to see so that's a raster image, you have to be careful about scaling a raster images or pixel based images because you can get on too big that you can start to see those individual pixels, and they looked like kaka, victor images don't have any of those problems at all. They are infinitely scale because there ain't no pixels in them. They are made of points and path and the image of the bottom right here I've actually taken into illustrator and selected the artworks that you can see the points and pass that comprise this image. Ok, so there's no pixels in there, it's up just points a path so you create points with the pin tool and then the line in between the points cannot to be curved or straight in that path. So then you can fill those paths with color and you can create an image like this so that's the difference between, uh, vectors and photos vectors air created with programs like adobe illustrator the old freehand carell draw. You can also create victors in photo shop in later versions of photo shop because we now have illustrators pen tool right there in photo shop. So where did you get these darn things? If you cannot create them yourself, these are three wonderful resource is for victors. Fa tolia, dot com is a royalty free stock image company, and they sell a lot of illustrations that called they have illustrations and vectors. So if you want the actual illustrator file, choose vectors from their database. When you're doing your searches, you can choose to search photos, illustrations, vectors so on and so forth you can also get vectors from I stopped photo as well as a company called graphic authority dot com and I think we've got it really nice graphic authority prize to give away at the end of this session so these air three resource is that you can use and I've gotten a special deal from photo leah and I stopped photo if you type in these your girls that I've got here you get a deal where you can sign up and get ten free images on that all right so that's where you can get him and in another illustration of using vectors is look at the slide on the screen right now seeing all those of you who calls around the edges that's a vector illustration great for adding def and texture to your image I use that on every single slide idea you know and I've got the opacity lower to the point where it's not too overpowering you can still read the text and the logos that air sitting on top of that it just adds a little bit teacher depth and visual interest to that side so I love using vectors with photos and I think you will tee so let's go ahead and pop back in the photo shop and let's start creating the first one we're going to create is this image right here? So another great way to add another product to sail in your photography business is to do something like this shoot your subject you know if they've got a musical instrument or what having on a solid color background and bringing the vector that further exemplifies the message of that image here we've got music, so I went in got thes musical notes from my stock photo and I brought them into photo shop in a mirror in which photo shops going to remember that they're a vector, so it will remember all the super powers that are inherent to vector files, which is infinite scale ability for one ok, so we're gonna bring these in as smart objects and that will force photoshopped to remember what kind of file format the original file wass so we won't ever get picks elation weaken, resize those music notes all day long, and they will never picks late so let's, go ahead and delete the layer that I created for you now let's, bring in that victor so we'll choose file place this is one way to do it. I'll show, you know the way in a second navigates you wear the images live and here again you're gonna get all these files if you purchase this course and I've divvy them up in the folders, you can follow along, you know what the heck's going on? So we're going to click to activate or slight rather earthy vector from my stop go and click ok, and it comes in eventually it's gonna think about it the larger the victor illustration the longer photo shot will take to place it don't let don't painting, so when you bring in when you use the file place command photo shop assumes that you're going to need to resize that artwork so already gives you the bounding box of the free transform with all this literary sizing handles. So what we're going to do on this one is spin it, we need to rotate it so that those notes like they're coming out of the saxophone, so if you position your cursor just outside any of those corner points, then your cursor is going to turn into a curved, double sided arrow, and then you can just click and drag teo move those notes around, and I'm calling on the shift key disguise that didn't want accidentally resize them while I was doing that. And if you need to resize and hold down the shift key dragon corner, point inward to make it smaller or outward to make it larger. Let's, say that's good, and then you can release your modifier key and you can click and drag within that bounding box to position them on screen. When you're finished press return or enter and that's really all there is to now because this particular victor file had two illustrations in it, you can see the second set of musical notes. Then I'm going to use a layer mass to hide that and that's another great thing and should you buy victory illustrations from some of these stock companies oftentimes there will be several iterations of art in a single file so don't think that you have to know how to use illustrator because oh my gosh I need to open that file with an illustrator and delete the parts I don't want to use you don't have to do that at all you can hide them here and in photos shot with a layer mask so was add a layer mask to this layer by clicking the circle within a square icon at the bottom of the layers pale and your layer mask is dust digital masking tape that's all it is just like he would use in your house if you're going to paint your walls you'd mask put masking tape on your base boards to protect them same thing here we've got digital masking tape on lee it's black and photo shop said a beige or bright blue in the real world so we've got her mask active here and I know it's active because it has that little white bracket around each corner now let's come over here to the tools pain I'll grab the regular old brush tool set your four round color chip the bottom of your tools panel to black if your color chips or anything other than black and white press d to set them to the default of black and white and then press thistle curved arrow until black hops on top or you compress the ex key to flip flop your color ships so brush tool set your four grand color chip to black trot up to the brush preset picker in the options bar make sure you've got one of these soft edge brushes active doesn't matter which one we just want soft edges and then come over here and paint atop the area that you want to hide technically for this one we really didn't have to have soft edges but that's fine now the other thing we need to do is if I zoom in and then use myspace barter space bar to reposition my image as I was aimed in I can see that the tail into those music notes is appearing on top of the saxophone there I'm going to hide that part two so it looks like they're coming out of that area and that's why I picked a soft is british that's all there is to it you're done and now you've got another piece of art that you can offer to your clients so let's do that again on another image hey saul, delete the one I made for you this time let's take a look at another way to import that into your phone shop document let's say you've already got your photo open you know, adjustment layers what have you, teo? Create your final version of the image you're ready to import? The victor bridge is a great tool to use toe peruse the files on your hard drive I did a really nice class on bridge full day, so it's the photo shot deep dive adobe bridge and we went over all kinds of tips and tricks for using it. But one thing that's knee is that if you're already in bridge trying to find the right file it's much easier to find them in bridge and it is in a in a system dialogue boss, because you can see the darn things you can trigger the place command straight from bridge and that's a real anything. So what we're going to do is find the artwork that we want to bring in. We're going to control a right click on the file itself and lookie there there's our place command so that we're going to his place in photo shop and photo shop is going to place it into the open document just like that. So now let's do a little bit of rotation because we want to make those music notes looked like they're coming out of the sex fun again, we're going to press and hold these shift key and drag a corner handle inward to reduce the size of those music notes and it's up to you, you know, how do you want a position these if you want to let them hang off the edge of the document or not, you know that's all quite subjective but let's say that's good when you get it just right press return to let photoshopped know you're finished because it's got a one track mind, it will squawk it if you try to do anything else with an active bounding box now it's time to add our later mass because we want to hide the music knows better. Appearing on top of the saxophone, he can see them right there, so let's add a mass by clicking the circle within a square icon at the bottom of the layers pale now we've got her mask active let's make sure that we have the brush tool active we already do. We need black is our foreground color chip, and now we're ready to come over to the image and we can paint toe hide the illustration where we don't want it to show if you were deleting it, yes, you could use the eraser told, but you're deleting it, you would be able to get it back, so if the cat jumps up onto your keyboard or you know a child comes up and move your arm or whatever ni go like that then you'd have start over you have to undo a few times, but in the realm of the layer mask black conceals and white reveals all you have to do is press the ex key to flip flop your colored ship so that your painting with why to reveal and then paint back across that area and that will bring that part of the later content right back press x two foot focker chips again so you're painting with black and then come in and fine tune the edges here that's fine, huh? This is another example so the victor in this one is this piece of lace so let's take a look at how to do that there's the before the lace works well in this image because the way the photographer shot it there's not a whole lot going on over there and it's kind of overexpose kind of extremely over exposed so adding something that's visually interesting but yet isn't so distracting that it completely takes away from the subject is a nice thing. So let's, go ahead and delete that layer and we can choose we can pop back over the bridge if we want clique are laced, this particular piece of lace came from fa tolia and you will purchase these things from those companies that we looked at earlier for tolia and I saw graphic authority they hang around forever they're yours so it's not like you're gonna have to buy a vector every time you want to do this you will create a set that you can go to again and again and again like these music notes like this lace and so on so let's go ahead and control or right click on the lace and choose the place command in photo shop now let's scoot this over to the right resize it if you want press return to accept that obviously too strong I don't want to completely cover up that part of the photo so what I'm gonna do the change its blend mode to something in the contrast category ok, so we're going to go for soft light and how do you know two picks off like experiment? I knew I didn't want my this part of the image to turnout ah whole lot darker then there is the image I need so I wouldn't go for anything in the dark in category. I also don't want that part of the photo to disappear from or that lace to disappear completely or get even lighter you know by choosing something in the light in category someone did something that's going to be subtle so I went for soft light and it worked out really well so that father is too that so let's take a look at some other images here's our get girl adhere or it'll fake ad fonix for pro is my favorite front management software, so when photo shop is encountering a file that has text in it it's looking to see if there's any fonts and are already turned on that it needs to activate so that's why we're getting this message you know where is fun explorer pro because you've got text in here so here we've got a little ads is a great way like I said earlier for graphic designers to add a little bit visual interest into your layouts that you've got so if we look in our layer panel here, we've got a text earlier we've got a solid color adjustment layer here, phil layer rather that's just making a safe spot for our text we're gonna look at how to create that tomorrow in the reading habits to break class, but what we got down here is our victor illustration ok, so let's, go ahead and click that and I'll delete it and then we'll bring it back in just like we have before. Use the file place command here in photo shop or over in bridge and there's our illustration click place foot shot brings it in complete with re sizing handles so this one we need tio not only make it smaller if we want to see our subject at all, but we need to flip flop it ok, so I want this small piece to be on the left side so I need to flip flop it horizontally super easy to do while just the next thing to do after choosing file place is free do anything else control or right click inside that bounty box and then you're going to come down here too flip horizontal and that just flip flopped it way easy press return to let folks at night you're finished we forgot to resize it's let's go ahead and re some and free transformed by choosing edit free transform or by pressing command or control t now we gotta re sizing handles back this time I'm gonna hold down to modifier keys while I'm re sizing this image and that's because I'm gonna hold the shift key down to keep the aspect ratio as the original photo so our victor isn't going to get all sloppy job from being squished in stretch so we're gonna hold down the shift key for that we're also going to hold on the option canada mac or altana pc because I want to resize from this center point but which is going to keep me from having to mess with the other corner points so see how we're re sizing from the center so we're affecting all four size instead of having to resize and individually then you can release your modifier key reposition the item and I might even rotate it a little bit so it's doing something like that and then when you get it just right, just press return till it footage shot know that you're finished, and then if you need to hide some of that illustration, just add a layer mass to it. So let's say, we don't want this big blue circle right here, but we like the rest of the stuff that's going on. What we could do is just add that layer mask press b to grab the brush tool. Make sure your four grand color chip is black. Make sure you got a soft edged brush active by opening the brush preset. Pick her up here, make sure you got a fluffy guy active and then come over here. Use your keyboard shortcuts, right bracket key to go up and brush size left bracket key to go down and brush size they live next to the peaky on your keyboard for paul mccartney, my favorite beatle, and then you can just paint to hide the part of the illustration that you don't want, so you don't have to have any skill in illustrator the program that this veteran was created in at all to be able tio manipulated here in photo shop and this kind of stuff is so much fun to dio really unleashes your inner creativity, so now we're gonna look at a few other photos. More ideas for both graphic designers and photographers to use vectors and photos so let's pop open this image and again I'm really sorry about this but that is a good looking beard sorry, I know it's accent it like that but I mean we just spend a moment looking at how beautiful that serious no okay, so what we've got here is another fake ad and if you look at my layers paint you can see I've got a vector illustration right here but I've also got of solid color feel layer that apparently is clipped or attached to the layer underneath it which is our shamrock victor okay that's where the green colors coming from so you don't even have to open illustrator to color these darn things in this way ok so let's take a look at how to create this want to go and turn off my text and I'll delete these other two layers there we go so let's bring in our victor file place here we go we've got our re sizing handles we need to rotate this thing so let's point our cursor just outside of any of the corner handles and I want to make sure that I get it on a the right rotation so I'm gonna go ahead and press and hold the shift key which is going to rotate it in increments like this so that I can get a perfect ninety degree rotation okay, release your modifier. Keys ips. We'll do that one more time. I let go of the key before I was ready to there we go. So let's bring it in shift, spinning around when you get it just right. We need to resize it. So it's press command minus or control minus that we can see our whole document. And now let's use both modifier keys. We talked about a second ago. Shift in option on a mac or shift altana pc to resize this illustration from the inside out. And we just want to make it big enough that it covers the whole photo. And again, you could use a layer mass to hide certain clever leafs. If you want now, we could experiment with blend modes here. Let's, go down to something overlay category. That is one interesting look. Soft light would also work on illustration like this for dealing with the black illustration, but I wanted to be color so let's go back up to normal blend mode and now let's. Use a solid color, feel layer and push that color from that solid color. Feel layer through the vector so let's go down to our half black, half white circle at the bottom of the layers panel. I feel like I should have to have a tape recorder sitting next to me when I say let the half black, half white circle I should just press play, and then I could just stop talking for a minute and keep going on so let's, choose a solid color and let's choose a range of colors within green, and we want kind of a darker green, so let's, go down here, click ok now to push that layer content through the shape of what's on the layer underneath. We're going to clip it to that other layer in their two ways you can do this. One is with the keyboard shortcut that is my preferred method amazing man a little bit so you can see so here we are in our layers pale you're gonna point your cursor at the dividing line between those two layers and you're going to hold down a modifier key and it's option on the mac or all on a pc when you get this cursor, which, by the way, isn't even see a six previous versions of the program that cursor is going to be two intersecting circles. This cursor is a little bit more descriptive of what's gonna happen because it's got that little down we're pointing arrow that's let me know that hey, you're about to clip this layer to the one underneath it so that the thing on top is going to be shoved through the shape of the thing on the bottom so let's go ahead and give it a click and see how that layer scooted over and now it has that downward pointing arrow so now we've colored are shamrock screen so we might want to reduce the opacity of them somewhat ok, we could change the go ahead at our text so there's all kinds of things we could do here if you don't want the clover leaves to be messing with the text so much he could rotate that illustration around with the bulk of the clover leaves appear on the left hand side we do this do that real quick by summoning free transform and then we could flip it don't have to rotate it so let's go ahead and control or right click within that bounty box and let's say flip poor donal so that's another look and then you could also change the blending mode for even more creative effects with a little bit of color so we could come back up here to the blend mud menu and choose soft light must go ahead and make sure our capacity is at one hundred percent on the color layer click back on the vector layer and you could experiment with different blend minutes that way so myriad opportunities possibilities here let's take a look at another for example, of that kind of thing, actually open both of these files. This is another idea of how to add victor's two photos to create additional product she concil in your photography business so what if that here is a photo with a nice, blurry foreground perfect opportunity to put something around over there? Just dress it up a little bit, so let's, go ahead and add, I'll delete these layers, let's add our victor's, bringing in file place cleverly named corner swirls. Now this one is from a set from graphic authority. Okay, graphic authority has a great a combination of these ornaments, and so you'll find this is a corner or tournament for the left hand. Bottom side, you'll also when you download items correct authority, they'll have pieces for all four corners. They'll have top pieces, bottom pieces, lower left, corner's, lower right corners so you will get a time of files for not very much money might be a little more cost effective doing that kind of thing, buying a package from graphic authority than buying them one at a time from places like frittoli and I stopped, but in my experience, you're going to find itself on for totally, and I saw that you're not going to find anywhere else graphic authority has a nice set of vectors. But the ones on photo leah and I start photo are completely different a little bit more creative and the ones from graphic authority tend to be a little bit more subtle and arguably you don't want you know the vector ornament to completely distract from your photos so it just depends on what you're doing the shamrocks I got from my stock photo ok, so now we've got our little corner embellishment so let's reduce our zoom percentage so that we can see uh the bounding box handles of this and that's easily done with the keyboard shortcut in this keyboard shortcut you will use every day of your photoshopped life. Here it comes command zero or control zero on a pc that will make photo shot resize your document just in there for you can see all for corner handles arguably they're hard to grab if you can't see them so let's go ahead and press the shift key and drag downward so that we're reducing the size of that ornament a little bit. I got a little bit too small clique within the bounty box to position it press return at this point you can experiment with blend modes to change the look of it that's very interesting subtle, you know barely there but still there but let's look at how tio apply color to it case will change the mood back to normal let's create another phil layer so let's click the half black half white circle the bottom of the layers panel this time was choose a great in okay so we used to solid color moment ago now we're choosing ingredient since there is no way to use a keyboard shortcut to make this adjustment layer appear beneath the currently active layer whatever the color that the grady and this set t which is picking up from our color chips sound here at the bottom of our tools panel is going to cover up the photo what we're going to do is snatch color from the photo so create the grating it feel layer and then just immediately click ok now lives clip it to that layer underneath it ok so let's press and hold the option chiana mac or altana pc and click it so that now that color is being forced through the content of the layer underneath it now we can actually see our whole photo in order to steal color from it for that radiant adjustment layer so it's a double click the thumbnail of that grady in't phil and what we're going to do is click to open the radiant preset picker because we just want to choose at this point we want to choose a grady in't that has two colors in it so just choose any of these that have two colors hey then we need to add we need to get to the grady in't editor okay, so we want to edit the colors that grady and so the first step is just to pick any two color grady in from the pre set list then you're going to click the preview itself so the first time we clicked we clicked the downward pointing triangle to pick a to grady in color. Now let's click within that preview area and that is what opens a radiant editor from this point. Actually, you could also just choose the two headed to color grading it from here at this point you can click these little color stops these old guys right here and if I click that that particular color is going to show up in this color field right here and once it does, I can click that color field to open the color picker and the mouse away from the color picker to steal a color from the image so that's what we're going to do so let's click that color stop it loads into that color field now let's click the color field and up pops the color picker. Now you can mouse away from the image and you can be in to experiment with colors that already exist in the image which will make it blend very nicely and not be so distracting. So for example, we could choose a green from the sunflower here for one end of the grady and color click ok now let's click that other color stop at the far right so now that color loads into the color field, I can click the color itself down here at the bottom of the grading editor and again, it opens the color picker. Now I can mouse away from the image and perhaps pick up an orangey color for the other color in the grading it and the great thing about doing it this way, as you can just keep clicking around until you get the effect that you want. Okay, so click ok the two colors that we've chosen right now are very, very similar, so I'm gonna come back over here to the green side of things, and I'm gonna choose a darker green, so they get a little bit of a variation between those two and now you can click ok and using the grading it, phil dialogue, you can flip flop that grady it, so if you don't want it to go from green toe orange, you could make it go from oreste a green just by clicking this reverse button, see how it flip flopped it so that's what we had green on bottom? No, we've got green on top, okay, so we'll be doing that again and again and again, here's another example of the exact same thing subtle but as visual interest another thing that you can sell to your clients so let's, go ahead and delete these layers right here bring in our vector file place that's not the one I wanted file place do as I say, not as I d so this is what we want and I've remembered them in the folders in the order in which you're going to use these files, so hopefully that will help so let's, go ahead and spend the sucker around and hold the shift key down so that we get to perfectly ninety degrees in alice present hold shift an option and drag one of the corner handles diagonally outward and for this particular one I'm going to let it be just a little smaller than the photo itself. Press return now let's add some color, click the half black, half white circle the bottom of your layers pain will choose grady in go ahead and click ok now let's, go clip it to the layer underneath by pressing, holding the option chiana mac or shift on the pc position your cursor pointed at the dividing line between those two layers and when she see that special cursor, click now in come back in and edit the grady and color doubleclick the great aunt phil layer thumbnail and go ahead and click within this preview area to open the radiant editor scared out of the way if you need tio, click any of these two colored radiance or you know heck, experiment with all this stuff if you want there's a slew of grating it presets built into the program and you can load them my clicking that little gear sprocket see, these are all different sits ingredients that are built into the program. You have to load them though, okay? But we're going to pick up color from our image I'm just showing you that so you can have extra ways to experiment. So now that we've got let's get a tew colored radiant because that just puts the stops on the bar automatically for us, then we're just gonna swap out colors so let's click the red stop, then click the field in which read appears and we can come over here and shoes, eh? Dark green for one color, click ok and then click the color stop at the other end of the radiant click it when it appears in the field and once she's something really light for that one, go ahead and click ok, click ok again to close the grainy editor and then experiment with the reverse checkbox if you'd like to flip flop the colors of those grady ints nice way actually printed this one and studio and have it uh, large format somewhere for it is around here I thought they hung it but maybe they didn't but it's really need effect it's very very pretty on this image and it doesn't take away from the focal point at all which I like okay, so let's look at another example of that this is another idea again using some embellishments from graphic authority but you'll notice overhearing bridge that I've actually named named him from where they came from so this one came from graphic authority but in the image you can see that we've got two of those embellishments went on top when on bottom all I did was uh add one of them and then I filled it with color using the little clipping technique that we've been doing and then I made a smart object out of it and then I dip located it and rotated it and positioned it at the bottom so that's what we're going to do and in doing it with smart objects like this I retained the ability to experiment with color on both embellishments at the same time because I made a linked smart object so if I change the color of one it's going to change the color of the other one for me which is really really nice so let's do that let's go ahead and delete these two layers so we've got our photo open ellis at our victor cheese file place come down to where it lives resize it if you need to you we're going to scooted up here then we're going to shift option drag a corner handle outward to make it larger now we're ready to add color to it let's add our phil layer solid color go ahead and click ok clip it to the layer underneath option point your options are all on when those point your cursor at the dividing line between those two layers now you can actually see the darn photo now it's fine tune the color so let's double click that layer thumbnail of the film layer and come over here and let's steal a purple from the little girl's shirt and I could zoom in if I wanted to really grab that purple using a color that's already in the image assures you that's all going to look get together which is nice there we go click ok now we need to create our bottom embellishment I felt kind of naughty doesn't it the guy's in there going oh my god she did not say that he did so it's shift click to activate both layers okay the film layer filled with color and and the victor itself and let's make a smart object out of it so we've got them active now in our layers panel so let's control or right click near the layer name so like the right hand portion of that layer because you're gonna get a different menu if you control a right click the thumbnail itself so you want to control a right click out here and we get the pa pittman news handy dandy shortcut many and we can choose convert a smart object now let's duplicated by pressing commander control jay now what we can do is either use free, transform, flip vertical or you could just use free, transform and spin it around and then use the move told her position at the bottom of your photo but let's use the first uh solution because it will save you a step or two so let's sum and free transform you can choose edit free transform or press commander control t now it's immediately control or right click within the bounding box and just choose flip vertical and that's going to do everything for us both press return to let footage shot now you're finished and you're done now let's say you want experiment with the color on this easy peasy just double click one of the smart objects it doesn't matter which one because they're linked you change one it's gonna change the other one so let's double click on one of the smart objects and photo shot is gonna pop it open in a temporary file see how now in my photo shot workspace here's the file that we were working on and another tab just open and with the extension psb ok, the same ufo shot big what this is is really a temporary document showing you the contents of your smart object. You can think of it as expanding that smart object we we use a smart object to kind of compress two layers in the one now we've expanded it so now here's, our solid color phil earlier so we can come up here and double click it slayer thumb now we got the color picker so let's go to something in the blue round click ok now at this point this is very important. So please remember this step you must choose file save not say, that file saved because this is a temporary document you don't want to be renaming it. You don't want to be saving it somewhere else on your hard drive file save or commander control is then close it a watch when we come back to the other document and changes going update just like that see many pretty slick I loved and things like that so again, we just created, uh, the smart object let's do that one again because that's a fun one so file place navigate to where the the who hall is resize it position and say ok at a feel layer go ahead and close it clip it to the layer underneath my option or all clicking the dividing line between those two layers now we can double click that from now open it up steal a color that lives within the image click ok now let's activate both the film layer and the victor and make a smart object from the tube so we're compressing those into one layer controller right click near the layer named cheese converges smart object now duplicated commander control j we need tio both flip flop it and move it down to the bottom of the screen easily done with free trade farm so press command or control t to summon free transform either rotate it and then use the move told reposition it or just right click or control clique within the free transformed bounding box and she's flip vertical press return now let's say we want to change the color of our embellishment doubleclick to expand either smart object it doesn't matter which one double click it temporary document opens doubleclick that thumbnail of the phil layer she was another color click ok file save not save as safe so commander control s then closed the document and our changes your updated back here in the original document that's working smarter, not harder snail let's pop into another folder and let's look at ornamental frames ok, so here's a nice one that I created this is also from graphic authority. So all these vectors that you've seen right now that have come from back graphic authority came within one set, and I think that set retails for around one hundred fifty dollars there's a slew of vectors and frames and stuff that you get with that. So what have we got here? The same kind of thing a little bit different in that the vector isn't solid, so we have to add a layer mass to our photo so that we don't see it going beyond the bounds of the vector frame. So let's, just do that whenever a quick I'll go ahead and delete the layer mask so that we're starting from scratch. There we go, so let's go and place our victor. We're in fuller number three there's our frame spinning around. Here we go and I'm going to zoom out a little bit so I can see my whole document by pressing command or control minus it's a shift option to resize the frame let's say that looks good. Click ok now we don't want to clip this particular frame to the photo layer because look, what's gonna happen absolutely nothing so the photo would be showing up through. The little bits of the frame, which is not what we want, so what we want to do is just go ahead and use a layer mask to hide the edges of the photo that extend beyond the frame so it's going click our photo layer and let's grab the rectangular marquis tool in let's just draw box about the same width is that frame and then add a layer mask. So now we've hidden the edges of the photo that appear beyond the frame now let's colorize that frame and the exact same way that we've been using so let's go ahead and click our top most layer because we want our phil layer to appear at the top of layer stack so let's go ahead and add that will use great and again click ok clip it to the layer underneath now double click the fund nail again click the grady and preview area if you wanted to color grading and stick with something, start with a pre set and then click those little color stops click the color field and come over and snatch up your color so it's chief something in the orange the realm for this one click ok click ok again and an experiment with the reverse button two foot fought the colors in that grainy in so that's another idea for you another way to frame a photo using vectors is by using blend moods now let's take a look at that basketball image we talked about and I saw similar victors and I'll just show you the vector real quick for every sport imaginable I got these from my stock photo that's the vector file that I downloaded from I stop and I there is one for football there's one for soccer so this would be great to use in a a template situation ok, someone go ahead delete that victor and we'll bring it in chiu's file place navigates where it lives and this one we really don't even have to change color we're just gonna change the bloom minutes on it resize it like we've been dan press return and now let's change the blend mode to something in the contrast category let's maybe try soft light bottom being beta boom now you've got another sellable product free client let's look at another variation on that this one we're actually going to show the photo through the frame so here's that football template look at all the cool vectors you're going to get if you purchase photo shot week amazing, huh? So let's go ahead and delete this layer so let's say here's our beginning image right now this place are victor file place navigate toward lives in the cleverly named football folder bringing in doing the resizing if you need to hear is that a very handy keyboard shortcut again, commander control zero to make photo shot resize your document just enough to see the transform handles analysts shift option to make them a little bit smaller press return when you're finished. Now we're ready to shove the photo through the shape. Well, our layer stacking order isn't quite right because when you do this, whatever the top most layer is going to get shoved to the shape of the layer underneath, so we need to reverse our layer stacking order. We need to drag that illustration below the photo layer. Okay, now we can push that photo through that shape so it's press and hold option again are ault on a pc and just point your cursor at that dividing line between the layers once again and now we have shoved that photo through the shape of that frame. Now we've got transparent pixels back there, so we need to add a color, right? So unless you want to put that on top of something else, let's, say, put a new side show re any transparency. If you want to put on a web site and have the color of the website show behind the photo, then you would not add a feel layer like I'm about to do here let's go ahead and choose a solid color and let's just pick white and then let's drag that layer to the very bottom of the layer stacks now we've got a fight background now the only problem with this one that you'll spot very quickly is that I've got some of the illustration covering at my subjects faces and I don't want that in this situation it's just azizi to fix it is to just add black paint to those areas on the illustration ok, so let's click toe activate the illustration and then we can come in here with the brush tool set to paint with black and I think it's gonna make me actually rast arise my smart objects let's do that now I could paint on it so you would just paint with black to hide those extra bits photoshopped won't let you paint on a smart object so because it's yeah it just won't let you paint I'm smart on you have to rest arise it so for this technique if I was really doing this I'd probably duplicate that illustration layer before I rast arises that so I could have an extra one hanging around in my layers pale should I need to get back to it for anything another anything to do if you're doing this particular technique is at a drop shadow so let's add a drop shattered to that illustration layer see how now it looks like the frame is kind of pressed into the photo so it's just another possibility one of brazilian in this kind of thing what a great thing for an event photographer or if you're you know for talking for that goes to a lot of sporting events like this for younger people you know high school can imagine parents would buy this stuff like crazy if this was their son you know in his senior year on that football team so think about that kind of stuff in your businesses now let's take a look at swapping backgrounds okay? So let's say you shoot your client on a white background super easy to swap out using blending modes we did that just a little bit earlier so then you could go on to a place like I stopped photo or for tolia I think this file is from I think it's from fa tolia so let's delete the layer mask, change the blame about to normalcy and see what the vector looked like that's the vector so you could have a few of these themed perhaps by season you know on your hard drive as a photographer and you could just apply these you know your clients aren't going to care if you use the same vectors or probably not even gonna know they may not even know each other so you could have a few of these in your back pocket to apply you know, spring summer fall holidays, that kind of thing birthdays in all kinds of things so let's go ahead and bring that in it is easiest though for this particular technique to shoot your subject on a white background that makes it super easy is to drop right out so let's come down here and find that victor cleverly named spring illustration resize it if we need to you and again the larger the size of the file more complicated the vector file is it may take photo shop a second or two tio get it in there but once it appears and surely it will then we're going tio use a layer blend mode teo swap out that background and the great thing about shooting on white like this is that if you buy any kind of victor it's going to be darker than white so by using blend mose one in the dark and category will use that darker color blend mode that we used earlier then photo shop is gonna look at the colors on one layer look at the colors on another layer and on lee the darkest colors are going to remain and since anything is darker than why why isn't a drop right out so that's going to be really, really helpful if this file would actually open oh ok let's go impress escape since it's not going to open like that but let's do it on um I'll just show you another example see if we get it to work we'll try from bridge, maybe it'll be happier over there. So it's right clicker control click on the illustration she's place in photo shop it's probably going to the same thing, but you kind of get the idea. Plus, this image is funny, paul all right, but a shop apparently is getting a little bit tired into the day here, so let's, look at one more thing and then let's take questions. So this is another idea. So this kid was shot on a white background. I have a few these rays in your bag of tricks, and with a flick of a blend mode, you've swapped out the background so apparent would absolutely only by this, in addition to all the other photos that you made case, so define illustrations like this search for a raise, search for starburst, search for beans, sunbeams those kinds of things to find some of the other vector frames that we've been using in this class try searching for grunge frame, ornamental frame embellishment, ornamental background, that kind of thing, and with those key words, you're gonna be able to find the kind of images that you've seen in this class here. So let me see if I've got anything else to show you, and then we will take a few questions the last file that I've got for you here is the specter texture and you can see exactly what we did by looking at my layers panel here so what I've got is at the photo I used the quick selection tool to create a selection of the lady and I added a layer mask so that we're not seeing that white background that used to be in the photos you can see right here then all I did was bring in a vector and clip it to that layer and in clipping it to the layer it's being shoved through this layer mask so I don't have to have a layer mask on both layers okay so that's another idea using a vector file as texture and you can see the vector file it's got all these other kind of colors in it and stuff and I changed the blend mode of it toe hard mix which is very contrast in mode so that's what's giving it this unique color so all of that is just to say that there's no end to the kind of creativity that you can use with these files purchase of course you're gonna get all these layers and you'll see exactly what I did and be able to listen to me again and again so do we have any questions on combining photos and victors we always have it from the internet but in studio audience are you good to go or do you have questions? How do we get a single vector off of a sheet of vectors? Okay, so by sheet, I'm assuming she's, meaning file it doesn't matter if you bring in a file with a whole bunch of illustrations on it, you can use layer masks to hide the ones that you're not using. But if for some reason you want just a piece of a file, what you can do is just pop it open in the illustrator, and I've got an example of that right here to show you so what we can do let's say we're going toe, we just want the bunny ears of this illustration, right? I thought we want well, we could select them an illustrator and copy and paste them in the photo shop. And when you do that for ships and say, hey, I noticed you've got hold of a vector here. Would you like me to pace? It is a smart on tate and you would say why? Yes, photoshopped, I would love that. Thank you for asking, so let's just do that real quick, I'm gonna click to activate my vector, see all those points and pass the artist is a stock illustration for my stock photo the artist has grouped all of these points and past together to keep me from messing up their beautiful artwork well I need to break it apart to be able to grab just the bunny ears so let's use the the direct selection tool here in illustrator clipped to activate the artwork then shot up to the object men even say on group that's going to break everything apart now click somewhere else in your document just to get rid of that first selection and then we can come back over here and we can click and then shift click to grab the many years now let's copy it to our computers clipboard by pressing commander control c come back over here to bridge open up an unsuspecting image another idea for divorces the breakup right here now let's paste there's the dialogue what would you like me to do with this pace? It is a smart object photo shot please click ok now we've got the bunny ears we can rotate them around and do all kinds of wonderful things to our subject way are learning so much here today good one things indicative isn't always bad all right all right so about five more minutes until we need to wrap so we've got more time for questions john scott is wondering if you can blur a vector graphic yes ok, you can I can so the blur filter works on smart objects so you bringing in as a smart object you can still use those filters use can't paint use any of the painting tools on a smart object you'd have two restaurants so absolutely can run any filters on vectors that you want already hts nineteen sixty three is there a way to make a vector image with a photo to create our own frame? Sure. Beyonce scope of this class okay, impossible let's see that would require the pin tool you can draw finish that's got all the vector chills they live right down here I'll show you where they are okay? So find the tea the type tool all right and the ventricles air in that same little category there. So here is your pin toll same pencil you got over an illustrator the arrow below the tea is how you can edit the paths once you create them so absolutely can use the ventricles and put a stop to create anything you want. Um janet leigh is wondering do you have tohave illustrator to open a vector in order to put it in photo shop? No, you not have tone you'll share you have to own illustrator open the file an illustrator and snip out the many years like we just did but everything else that we looked at in this class you absolutely not have to have illustrator on your machine at all that's kind of the beauty of being able to change the colors of those vectors and photo shop is you don't have to mess with illustrator for that kind of along the same line skies asking can I open a dot pps file in photo shop if I have no other sector kind of program to use? Sure and gps file is also a vector five postscript file actually let's see photo cat says this's a while ago but she says on the last project with linked vectors, when you double click to temporarily open the vector, what if I want to change the color to another one from the image? Is there a way to see the image to select or do you have to kind of eyeball it and guess that's a really, really, really great question so let's just take a look at that really fast we did that one was in this folder and it was this file. Okay, so we've made our smart object that aditya now let's pop open a smart object into the temporary document. All you need to do is arrange your workspace where you can see those open documents at the same time case let's break apart this tab so that I can see the other document now I got my color picker open I can still mouse over to the other document and pick up colors it's just not going to change in that original document until you save and closed this temporary document so you can see that I'm I really got this file active and I triggered the color picker from this file but I can mouse away from the color picture into this file anything that's open and you can see the color changing over here in this file of steve pink ok, so now let's go ahead and close the color picker command or control as to say that temporary document close the window and the changes update so that you just have to make it where you can see both documents at the same time to do that that's a great question I'm very glad that she asked it okay mayland there is is asking can you make your own vectors an illustrator and do the same thing with um I'm assuming apply them to images like this? Is there something that you need to deuce that special before adding them to photo shop? Not a darn thing save it as illustrator file native illustrator found profit right open and photo shots so a dhamma it appears that this person is maybe going forward and trying some of this out so their question is what happens if I mess up something when I'm working with the vector? Is there a way to get out of there quickly and safely phil kent, nativity view to meth up well, I'm not really sure what they're talking about. I mean, it depends on what you've done, ifyou've. I honestly don't even know what they may be up to. You know how you have to tell photo shop. Yes, this is what I want. This is the size I wanted to be bringing in your transforming it. You could always re summoned free, transform and keep you know. And if you if you do something like let's say you just you stretch this for some reason and you get it all whop e jawed and gross like that and there's really no way to recover from that. If you've done a few of the things you could undo so that command z will undo one step, commander controls the if you want a nd multiple steps, which is a step backward command, then add the option or all key to so you could try and doing, you know, several times tio undo what you did. But if you completely destroy it, you're just gonna have to delete that layer and bringing in again.
