Course Summary
Thank you so much for joining me for this data storytelling course. I hope you learned a lot and that you're coming out of it. Thinking differently about data and data storytelling. That's the most important thing you can do, which is why I didn't talk about specific tools in this course. I bet you're now able to think more like a journalist and organize your thoughts about data and how to communicate that data within a storytelling framework, which means you're well on your way to creating your own great data stories. Let's do a quick recap about what we've learned. Okay, first I shared what I think is our primary challenges communicators, which is how overwhelmed and impatient our audiences are and my solution that 4x4 model for knowledge content. Next we discuss stories, how important they are, their key ingredients and attributes. We also covered how to access your own inherent storytelling capabilities and since stories don't exist in a vacuum, we discussed how to reach a specific...
audience and how to activate emotions which are a key ingredient in great Stories. Next we discuss tapping into your creativity, which many feel ill equipped to do. Hopefully we've taken the first small step toward teaching you that you can be creative. In fact you're probably far more creative than you realize if you just allow yourself to go along a creative pathway without cutting yourself off. Next we discussed a series of specific techniques used in data storytelling from basic data analysis, journalism, story definition, story boarding and sketching. Finally, we talked about a series of best practices and techniques for making your data stories visual, from picking the best charts and graphs for your data to basic chart design principles and some of the research behind some of the choices data designers make every day. We even touched on some technical tips and tricks as well as next steps you can take to help you sell your services in the fiber marketplace and of course throughout it all, you had the opportunity to do exercises to practice these skills all along the way. If you love this topic, follow me on twitter at Bill Sander where I'm always sharing content about information design, data storytelling and visualization and join the rock that is. Com facebook group while you're at it where I'm hoping to develop a community of people who will share content and have conversations about these amazing, fascinating topics and don't hesitate to reach out to me about any of this stuff. I love talking about data storytelling and please leave a review of this course so others can find out about it. Thank you and happy data storytelling. Thanks. Mm hmm.
