Zombie Challenge 1: Brainstorm Session

So now I'm going to set up the situation. Zombies, Everybody's favorite. It's a zombie apocalypse. What you gonna do? So your group Your little rag tag group? You've Ah, You found a house on the outskirts of town. You're laying low, hoping that the zombies don't find you and you're gonna be all chill out until the National Guard commit. Problem is the zombies found you. They're circling the house. Um, and now so that's the situation. Okay, Your grandma's house, obviously from the look of things, and you don't have anything to So you've got that approaching situation. So as a group, you figure we're going to state a new challenge. We're gonna state the challenge. We got a problem. And that problem, or that challenges create a diversion eri mechanism that will make the zombies think you're in a different part of the house and you actually are. Okay, so we're now we're in the understanding points. What is it? Does that mean? What does diversionary mechanism mean? You know, how is that gon...

na? And this is all you have to work with. Okay, So let's brainstorm. Feel free to come up and take a look at what's going on here? But when the tools come out, please one person by each table approach with a tool. That way, there's three of you, like, chilling, and one person is examining. So you feel free to get up and look around. We're in the brainstorming stage, so right, draw, make a list and Ah, go. Yeah, of course. And there's questions. Please ask. Yeah, Jimmy. Right. Is it out? Alex, Uh, can zombies here the zombies come here? Can they communicate? They kind of grunt. I mean, they granted communication. Okay, you know, we don't know that. So, you know, there hasn't been studies done, So you just have to kind of assume that maybe they maybe they can, you know, obviously found you. So you did something that's all right. Good question. Any other questions before Go? Yeah. Matthey Reference tools. Yes. And you make it sound like we're gonna have table saws and jackhammers and four lifts or, like, other hammers. And can we take what if one group takes the chair part in the other group doesn't want to take the chair apart, or that just kind of you got to just kind of flow that some people will, They will be. You know, there'll be a shared type of materials. That is that kind of Yeah. If there's fighting amongst the groups like the tools get turned on ourselves, it's happened and it's ugly and we'll have evidence started. Okay? Yeah, they're saws. There's hammers there. Scissors. There's blades. There's the goggles and the gloves over here. And then at each table, you've got duct tape and glue guns. Sweet. So that's all you. So? Okay, so let's begin. Way. Could, like, Looks like a human. Our little body. Unless you have something that, like, some house way don't strange duct tape, something over when the door opens or something like that one. Yeah. You guys can also get up and look at what's over there, so don't Okay, Okay. So you could have something that falls over and light that turns on and on some I don't know how to make something like turning on and off springs. And you gonna make it? Yeah. There's stuff in we're not taking were just that We're just at the observing and getting ideas modes. Now you can't No, you guys can get. It's just when we have the tools. I don't want to have a May leg of craziness going on wires or something. Maybe we can get him to play a game and Popsicle sticks it. They are like, Thank you. Open. Okay, a couple more minutes and then we'll something underneath. That's a just There's nothing underneath our legs. I'm just putting. Get an idea of what's in like you can make really thick, learns ecology. Tithe. Okay, so get back to your desks. Now you have some knowledge of the materials of what's available. So now you can start really coming up with some ideas. Write some stuff out. Um, one of the things about in a collaborative mode that's unstructured like this is that people's rolls start to develop very naturally. Some people might immediately take to the pen. Some people are sitting just kind of stewing on ideas, all very natural. But the great thing about collaboration and also in some collective impact, um, rules and behaviors is that you're kind of assessing your recognizing assets around your table. Who is good at what, so that kind of naturally flows eso. You're experiencing that right now, which is great. Eso whoever has a pen in their hand. Go ahead and start. What's this idea? What's this idea? How will this fit? Does this fit there? And then we're going to actually move into the getting an idea of moving forward. Okay, So sorry, I'm interrupting the mode. Go way one house building on perfect mousetrap way because it brings it under There are, like, this style way. Do something where we create a base. There's not a window. I wanted to see if they could get like, a prop window. But you can imagine a window. You can imagine a window. Yeah, totally. I and we're also imagining that there's an additional rooms and things. The house, too. Yeah, I think something. Well, just like way you feel so it's very subjective, so it could be a real quick thing. You can imagine the situation being a little bit more dire than maybe this group or they're approaching, and you feel that you have time. So that's all about how you want to count your your solution where you're going. Nice. So what? There might be nails in the wood. There's hammers. You can pull him out. So about the limited supplies. What is the resolution process? Cannibalizing things goes 1st 0 no. You can assume as we get into that section, which will be in a couple minutes. You guys could just choose amongst yourselves. Who goes? You all have a time to go up there at some point. But some, you know, you might have some person is like, Well, let me just Okay, go and get this going. Get that and then somebody goes against it. But I think everybody needs to get in there and just cherish. And I mean, there's that That's part of the heart of this challenge. But if you don't live tonight, yes, you have lots of ideas and some things people might grab they might not necessarily use, So there could be more. So if you weren't another room could be pulling it. Keep it going, you know. Okay, we're gonna wind this up in just a couple more minutes. What's the table leg for? For the top. Okay, maybe easier to unscrew from under the chair. Those just screw on the foot of the chair and then you know, instead of sign, step on the side of things. If you want. We're in the brain. You have a brain Started that way over band. Maybe is like something if we can come up with brainstorming ideation, stage of the process. So everybody is kind of getting up with some ideas. Sounds like everyone sort of almost narrowing in on something. So that's what we're doing right now. We're synthesizing those ideas, and we're coming to a direction that we want to move forward with. Um, So I'm gonna give you a couple more minutes to do that. If in fact you haven't on. If you have, you can continue talking when we get through this. So a couple more minutes of this, Okay, go. Sorry. Extraditions way. Could use them to make this are you? Use the tools. Start of your design apparatus. It depends if no one's using them through. The answer is, perhaps if somebody is like, if you're using a tool that somebody needs and half of those little leg things Oh, no, Those aren't part of it that way. So we would dio Teoh really loud like that. Okay, look for the base. But one thing I actually overheard from this table I just wanted interject if you have about options, like if something isn't working. So it's always good to have, like, a contingency plan, sort of in your back pocket because you don't really know when you tear up this stuff, you don't really know what's in there. So you're kind of some of it is sort of like, If there's this, then we can do this. And if there's not, we could do that so much like life, a contingency plan is valuable.

Really enjoyed this class. Seeing the way each team changed at each stage was really interesting. Rather than learning about a particular thing like design, this class is more about learning how to think about problems and solutions in a different way.
