Digital Focusing Assistance
So this is a Fuji XT1. This Peaking works on many, and pretty much all of the mirrorless cameras these days, and so what it does is it shimmers an area of highlight where the camera is focused, so you can really see the range where the camera's focused, as we're focused on the closest subject and we work our focusing back a little bit. Anything that's really sharp, it shimmers with a color and on the better cameras, you're able to adjust not only the color, but the brightness of that color if you find it disturbing and distracting in your focusing system. The Fuji camera is unique, and I really like the Focusing Scale. I've been wanting this for decades on a camera. I wanted to see where I was focused, and how much depth of field I was going to get. And so it's got a little focusing point in white, and then in blue it's showing you where the depth of field is extending. So on the camera, as you can see right now I am focusing up towards infinity and I will focus at a point that is reac...
hing from infinity down to three meters. If I focus on infinity itself, depth of field only reaches back to five meters. So as I'm focusing, I'm gonna focus back down close-up and as you'll see on the image, I'm focusing on the closer subjects, and you'll see how the depth of field narrows as I'm getting closer in focus. We talked about shallower depth of field when you shoot macro and close-up. So I'm gonna set the focusing here at one meter and now I'm gonna start changing the aperture. You see the aperture numbers changing? Look at the depth of field growing. Look at that blue line extend all the way from a half meter to infinity. So it's giving me a preview, an indication of how much depth of field I get in that particular photo. And then, I'm gonna do the other thing that affects depth of field, and that is I'm gonna zoom in a little bit. As you zoom in, you get shallower and shallower depth of field, and so as we zoom in, notice how the depth of field in blue changes. I haven't changed the aperture, I haven't changed where I'm focusing at, that's controlled by the focusing, or by the zooming. And so these systems are giving you a lot of information. So far right now, I think Fuji's the only company that is giving us this specific type of information which I think is really neat. They have another system that's kind of unique, not used by a lot of people, but let's kinda see what the different options are for focusing. It has a Dual Image focusing, where it has the full image on the left, and a magnified area on the right-hand side, so not only can you compose, but you can focus at the same time, seeing both screens. Now, the downside is that it reduces the size of the big area, and so this is something where you want a really big viewfinder, and this has one of the biggest viewfinders out there, and it's just a neat option for people who like to compose and manual focus at the same time. One other system they have is a Digital Split Image focusing. Some of you who are a little bit older, you might remember the old split image focusing from the manual focus cameras. Well this is the new digital version of that. It turns the center area black and white and it breaks up the vertical lines and what you're supposed to do is turn the focusing so that you line up vertical lines to that they're straight. And so, different ways of focusing. You can also zoom in to see those lines a little bit more clearly. So it's working a little bit like the Rangefnder, like the Leica Rangefinders that we talked about earlier. So there's a whole host of potential when it comes to the mirrorless cameras and focusing.

Love love all John Greengo classes! Wish to have had him decades ago with this info, but no internet then!! John is the greatest photography teacher I have seen out there, and I watch a lot of Creative Live classes and folks on YouTube too. John is so detailed and there are a ton of ah ha moments for me and I know lots of others. I think I own 4 John Greengo classes so far and want to add this one and Travel Photography!! I just drop everything to watch John on Creative Live. I wish sometime soon he would teach a Lightroom class and his knowledge on photography post editing.!!! That would probably take a LOT OF TIME but I know John would explain it soooooo good, like he does all his Photography classes!! Thank you Creative Live for having such a wonderful instructor with John Greengo!! Make more classes John, for just love them and soak it up! There is soooo much to learn and sometimes just so overwhelming. Is there anyway you might do a Motivation class!!?? Like do this button for this day, and try this technique for a week, or post this subject for this week, etc. Motivation and inspiration, and playing around with what you teach, needed so much and would be so fun.!! Just saying??? Awaiting gadgets class now, while waiting for lunch break to be over. All the filters and gadgets, oh my. Thank you thank you for all you teach John, You are truly a wonderful wonderful instructor and I would highly recommend folks listening and buying your classes.

I don't think that adjectives like beautiful, fantastic or excellent can describe the course and classes with John Greengo well enough. I've just bought my first camera and I am a total amateur but I fell in love with photography while watching the classes with John. It is fun, clear, understandable, entertaining, informative and and and. He is not only a fabulous photographer but a great teacher as well. Easy to follow, clear explanations and fantastic visuals. The only disadvantage I can list here that he is sooooo good that keeps me from going out to shoot as I am just glued to the screen. :-) Don't miss it and well worth the money invested! Thank you John!

Wow! John is THE best teacher I have ever had the pleasure of learning from, and this is the most comprehensive, eloquent and fun course I have ever taken (online or off). If you're even / / interested in photography, take this course as soon as possible! You might find out that taking great photos requires much more work than you're willing to invest, or you might get so excited learning from John that you'll start taking your camera with you EVERYWHERE. At the very least, you'll learn the fundamental inner workings and techniques that WILL help you get a better photo. Worried about the cost? Well, I've taken courses that are twice as expensive that offer less than maybe a tenth of the value. You'll be much better off investing in this course than a new camera or a new lens. I cannot reccomend John and this course enough!
