Social Media Marketing

so not gonna talk to you a bit at all about the mentorship program during the 90 minute segment, because one of the large things that we will be doing during the mentoring program is social media marketing. And I realized that for those of you who have watched days, this was sort of a missing component talking about Yeah, I talk about using Twitter, and I talked about using Facebook, but how, like it sort of lacked a really get into it and depth. So we've created this 90 minute chunk today to talk to you about what I believe about social marketing, social media, marketing, how I use it, what it's for and what it's done to help me grow my business. So let's start talking about it. So first of all right, why is this important? And I used to love social media when it was just Facebook. I'm like, This is so fun. I get to see cat videos and tiny hamsters eating tiny burritos and people who dress their dogs as a spider. And it's awesome. If you haven't seen that video, you should google tha...

t one, too. It's really funny, Um, but now There are eight million different social media channels, and they all kind of require their own special skills, and they all kind of do something different. And it's really exhausting. And keeping up with social media is almost a full time job just in itself. So what I'm gonna try to impart on you in the next 90 minutes or so are some tips and tricks to make it a little easier for you, a little more in depth knowledge on what I do and why, And then, hopefully some things that you might have never even thought of before. And it's important because this is whether we like it or not what marketing is now. It's not just, you know, back in the old days where you took out an ad in the phone book and you took out a lot ad in your local bridal magazine and you were good to go. Now it's everywhere on bear, so many opportunities with social media that you never had before, so leveraging them to your advantage is kind of crucial. And there are a lot of people who wrote in when I announced the course, and they were like Can you help me with social media because like, I mean, I have an instagram, but I don't really use it. And I never tweet And I don't Facebook. And I'm like, Dude, you're killing yourself here like you've got to do it and I'm pretty good at it. Like I feel like I'm pretty intuitive at it. I've done a lot of research on it. I've done a lot of reading about it. I don't just jump into things. Not knowing what I'm doing, I put a lot of time and effort into making this, you know, understanding what I'm doing with social media and why. But like my husband hates social media, he thinks it's awful and he does it anyhow because you sort of have to. So first of all, social media cannot save you. If you saw right, you can Facebook and tweet and Pinterest and Instagram all day long. But if you're a terrible business person who doesn't take care of their clients and who doesn't have good work, this isn't going to give you a business. It might give you a boost. It might give you a couple of years, but you've got to have the work, and you've got to have done the business work to make this kind of be the icing on the cake With social media, you can start anywhere at anytime, Seriously, like, start tweeting right now like you don't You don't have to have a college degree to do this. You don't have to do this the course to do this. You can really start doing it at any point in time. But don't be worried about how many likes you have and how many followers you have. That's a huge misconception with social media. Is people get started and they're like, Wow, I only have, like, 50 people who are my fans on Facebook. I'm gonna go by a bunch of fans. First of all, you're an idiot, right? Like, don't buy these fans because all it's going to do is it's going to give you an inflated number. It's not actually going to do for you what social media is supposed to do for you, which is to get people engaged with you and your business. You. I would rather have 50 people who like my business and care about me and my business than 5000 people who just kind of clicked the like button and then ignore me. So building this organically building it with integrity is very, very, very important. So if you're thinking about buying instagram followers, if you're thinking about buying Twitter likes, don't by them. And by buying them, I mean going to a website where you're buying likes. I'm not saying this isn't boosting a post are not talking about a Facebook out. I'm talking about strictly buying likes or buying followers. Don't do it. It's gonna make you look kind of like an idiot. So please don't do that. So what is social media and why do people use it right to share OMG? I mean, you know, Seattle today and I'm on creativelive and it's really awesome. Um OMG I got new earrings. I'm eating a doughnut right now. L ol right like you're going out there to share. And some of it is like God, why are you sharing this like just went to the bathroom? It was awesome. Like stop. That's it. That's not the kind of sharing that I'm looking for, but you're going to social media to share your life with your friends and the people that are interactive with you and you're going to socialize, right? Like I have friends who live all over the world, and I see them in person not as often as I'd like, but I know so much about their day to day life from social media, and that's, you know, kind of dumb. But it's also incredibly powerful. I feel like it is given adept to some of my relationships that might not have ever happened, because how in touch can you stay with someone who lived in London and you're in New York? But if you can see their day to day life all the time, it can make you feel close to them in a way that you wouldn't if you couldn't do that, um, to interact, to go talk with friends on your Facebook groups to go chat with somebody you haven't seen within a long time to at three o'clock, you know it's 3 a.m. and you can't sleep and you're in your jammies and you get on the Internet and your friends were there. You know that's a powerful thing, and also to fall into a time sucking hole of cavity is. I mean, it's It's the dark hole of the Internet. You go to Google Super innocently to search reviews Nikon D 8 10 and 45 minutes later. You're like, Oh, my God. That answer eating a burrito, right? Like you. You get there. I got there again. See, I brought back the hamster in the burrito. Um, this is going to take time, right? Like, this isn't something that you can just be like a understand do social media. And, like, I'm gonna do it, it's going to take serious time. I would say that I probably dedicate 90 minutes a day to social media, sometimes more in some form or capacity. This is not just something that you can do and throw out there. This is a full marketing campaign for your business, and it should be treated as seriously as any other business decision that you're making. You know, one misstep on social media, and it's kind of hard to come back from it. So you need a plan, and you need to be methodical. And you just need to be very careful on the Internet, because in the past you do something stupid in front of a couple of people, and eventually they forget about it. You do something stupid on the Internet, and it will follow you forever. I tried to tell my 13 year old daughter that So first of all, do you want to do this yourself? There's nothing saying that you don't. You have to do your own social media. You can hire someone to do it. You can hire someone part time to do it. My assistant, Who is this me at wedding, Sandra has started helping me with social media because I just don't have time, and I'm always Oh God, I mentioned spreadsheets. I swore I wouldn't mention spreadsheets in this segment, But sorry, I have a spreadsheet on my friend Melanie Duncan, who is a very wise businesswoman who has also taught here on Creativelive, and she's sort of a super genius. She shared this little sort of very simple spreadsheet of what, whatever or whatever you're doing right now, Is it making you money or costing you money? You know, in a nutshell. So in the 90 minutes that I spend on Pinter arrest every single week, how much would it have cost me to pay somebody to do that for me. And in that amount of time, could I have made more money if I had done something else? Well, yes, I could have put those 90 minutes towards riding my new book or developing my new class or writing an email to a client to help up sell their album. I would make more money than I would make that I would pay Sandra to pin something for me. So whenever I'm deciding if I'm going to outsource anything, it's important for me to keep that principle in my head and to reiterate it again. Could I make more money in the time that it would take me to do the task, Then it would cost me to pay someone to do the task. So within 90 minutes, Aiken sell a $500 album upgrade, and I paid someone $30 to work on my Pinterest. For me, it seems like a no brainer. So there are some things that Sandra does for me. She does Pinteresque for me. Now I don't do it myself. There are some things that I still do myself because I believe that it should come from me and over time maybe that will change. You know, she's worked for me for a really long time. She's my best friend. She she knows me super well, I would trust her to post in my voice, but I still enjoy some of that. So maybe there will be a time where I give some of this to her. But for now, just handing over Pinteresque to her was was kind of a big deal to me. Will you make money if you outsource what I just said? In the time that someone else does it for you? Can you make more money than it would cost to pay them to do it for you? And this one is really important. This one is very, very, very major for me. Can you teach someone your voice? If you have someone posting on social media on your behalf, they are you right? Like I know you see all the time. There are companies where one of their employees who run their social media account loses their ever loving mind on the social media account and goes after a customer or says a swear word or act inappropriately. It's not that person's name. It's the name of the business that suffers. So if you're going to teach someone else to do social media for you, first of all, you need to be darn sure that you can trust them. And second of all, you need to really school them to do it like you're going to do it. It's incredibly incredibly important. All we have really is our reputation, and once you sully that reputation, it is. You will never get it back to where it was before. You can get it close, but you'll never get it all the way there. So just be that I'm not saying this to make you afraid. I'm just saying this to make you careful. And not only do you need to be able to teach someone your voice if you're going to outsource, but before you even begin, you need to find your own voice on the Internet so that those of you follow me on Facebook on Twitter, on Instagram on a 1,000,000,000 different social media networks. I sound like this. This is what I found like, this is what I found, like when I'm teaching. This is for my friends who watch This is me. This is just what I sound like. Except in my real life. I wear more yoga pants, less makeup and say a lot more swear words. Um, but I clean up for you guys, and I tone down the language. You're welcome. But, I mean, this is what I'm like. Like I've been the high school once. I don't have time to do it again. I don't play games. I don't lie on the Internet. The stupidest thing in the world. I don't make up stories to make my business sounds fancier than what it is because first of all, who cares? I don't care. It doesn't matter. And second of all this, we're gonna get you anywhere. The whole fake it till you make it thing. Please, Like we all know that doesn't really work. So don't do it. Just be yourself from the very beginning, and then you won't have to worry about anything. It's like when you're younger. If you lie to your parents about something, you have to maintain that lie. And then you have other little lies that have to go into backing up that lie. Or you could have just never lied in the first place and not have to worry about it. So find your voice on social media in a way that is very honest to you. Um, but that you're very comfortable with, you know, deciding, like, around election time. Are you going to go on a political rant on Twitter? Maybe that's who you are. And that's maybe you want what you want to dio. It's not what I want to dio. I don't. People who follow me on social media have no idea of my political leanings whatsoever. Um, they have no clue what my faith is or what I believe in. They don't know what I feel about. Ah, lot of things because I personally feel like that has no place in my business. Now there are a lot of people who make their faith in their spirituality. Ah, large part of who they are as a business person. And if that is what your heart calls you to do, do it but understand what you're doing when you do it, just like when you make any other marketing decision. So I would never tell you to keep your God or your faith out of your business, but understand what doing that will mean for you and then make your best decisions. There's no hard and fast rules on there, except my number one general over our king rule of business is Let me clean it up for you a little bit. Don't be a jerk. I mean, I use another word for jerk, but I can't say it on the air. It's just Just don't be mean to people, right? Like, be cool and be yourself and you'll be fine. You're gonna be fine. And don't pretend to be more successful than you are because first of all, nobody cares. And second of all, the worst thing that you can do is get caught lying online.

A couple years ago I attended WPPI and sat in on Susan's class. Out of all the classes I sat in on that year her's was in the top 2 for actual information and not just fluffy feel good hype. So I figured her Group Mentorship course would be a good one and it definitely has! A bit of background on me, I've been running my own wedding photography business for the last 6 years, 5 of those full time. I've taken tons of business courses and have circled back around to taking more classes to improve my craft. Susan's class focuses on both business and improving your craft. The big warning I have for this class is that there is a lot of homework, A LOT!!! But that is not a bad thing at all. I was swamped with weddings as the class started and was late to get to my homework but I'm so glad I didn't skip it because there was a lot of things I learned about my business just in answering her questions. I believe there were homework assignments every single day and while some are quick others will take awhile. So my recommendation is to take this course in your off season and use that down time to really concentrate on doing the homework and putting together questions to ask during the weekly chats. I was not able to do that as much as I wanted because of my schedule and I feel I did myself a disservice by not taking full advantage of what was offered. As another reviewer stated there were a lot of basic questions that were asked like how to get proper exposure in an image, etc. If you aren't sure how to do that then this class is not for you. I believe this class is geared towards those who are past the portfolio building stage and are looking to set their business up for success on the back end while improving their craft. Remember to ask questions, keep a notebook and write them down while doing your homework. Don't focus so much on what she uses for everything but why she uses it, if you understand the why you can apply that better to your business vs just the what. Again I would say to properly allocate time to take this class, treat it like a college class with weekly homework and study required. Don't buy it to watch later as you will lose out on most of what this class is about which is access to Susan for questions and feedback. Do the homework, I found the questions she asked us to answer led to a lot of revelations for myself in my business. Her questions led me to ask my own questions and review a lot of historical data for my business to get a better grasp on where I am. Luckily for me I'm doing way better then I thought ;)! Also I recommend for image critique to not just submit your best images, while we all like a pat on the back that won't make you better. She requested a mix of your best and areas of struggle. The images I submitted that I was struggling with are the ones where her advice will improve my craft.

Susan, simply amazing photographer, amazing woman, amazing business woman! If you want your but kicked then this the course for you! A kick start for your 'business', awesome .. honest .... brutal.... critique.... don't take it personally. This is a course for beginners and for those been in business for 4 + years. I have been in business for 4 years and this helped me seriously start from the beginning again on the business side of things and fine tune my processes. I learnt so much.... but was also great to know I was on the right track. For those beginning - oh I wish I had this as a guide 4 years ago!!! Enjoy! worth every penny! cheers Carissa www.capture-t-moment.com

I found this course helpful - but I also did all (well most) of the homework and I think to get the most out of this class you really need to be prepared to do the homework - which does require a reasonable time commitment. I found the business information (month 1) invaluable, and Susan was very, very active in the Facebook group, constantly answering our questions, which was great. Month 2 was a big image critique and I also found this very helpful. Month 3 was about editing and it was also a critique, which was helpful as well. Susan, Sandra (her assistant), Jen (her post production person) and CL worked very hard for us so we could get the best out of this course and I really feel I did get the most out of it that I could have gotten out of it. It is definitely worth it if you are willing to do the work. All of my questions were answered and I feel like my work is going to improve for the better now. If CL run any more mentorships such as this one, I would highly recommend them as I found I learned a lot more than in a regular class - because of the homework and the feedback (direct from Susan) on the homework. I am so glad that she was honest about my images because now I am seeing them in a new light (no pun intended).
