Instagram Stories: Similarities & Differences

Let's take a little sidebar here on, um a different app that, um Well, they're owned by Facebook. And they tried to purchase Snapchat. And since Snapchat turned down the $2 billion offer, they decided that well, we're gonna do something Snapchat ish of our own. And the app is Instagram An instagram has launched within the instagram app something called instagram stories And guess what? We have an instagram expert in house for you today My friend Soo be Zimmerman is the Instagram gal and she is going to join us today to talk about Instagram stories Please welcome Supes ever man Everybody Hello Honey, I think this is not her first rodeo. That's your fourth appearance. A creative life Fifth, including Michael Ports Okay, Yeah, you don't Great Well, thank you. I'm learning from all your guests Snapchat I know you dio and you But you love Instagram. You have been the insta gal now for a number of years and one of the leading trainers on instagram so instagram stories. There's a lot of simil...

arities to Snapchat, but there's also some differences, so let's talk a little bit about that And if we need to we can go to my device here, and, um, going to shoes. Mind you Have it all. Okay, here we go then. Yeah, blogger. And I'll snap you doing that? Of course you will. And I'll ask Grammy doing that held on Soupy Zimmerman is going to tell the creative live audience. About what? Instagram stories? Yeah, I'm happy to be back. I really am very fortuitous to bet that I'm in San Francisco and you just happen to be here for many people, you know, Instagram is instagram stories. There's a little bit more intuitive to use and Snapchat And I would agree with that because I the learning curve for Snapchat took me a while to understand all the nuances in all the different ways to navigate. But once you figure it out, it is so much fun. And I do create a snap story every single day. I love what Gene is it? Virginia? Yeah. I love what Virginia said about being riel and authentic and not perfect, because that's what I do on Snapchat on Snapchat. I show people basically what I am doing throughout the day, and I'll pull up, pull that up to show you guys and I I bring you with me on my journey So yesterday got here in San Francisco and then I just toward around a little bit and showed you my story without the makeup without being perfect. The But if I filter, I brought into instagram so I can teach you guys out to do that because that's one of the things that people want to know is how to get the Snapchat filters and instagram. And then I took you with me when I was at a workshop this morning teaching in Oakland and then back over the bridge. And then here we are with Joel. So of course I had toe document. This is well, so I keep my Snapchat stories throughout the day and I pull you in and I know that you do such a good job that, like, I feel like I'm with you when I'm not with you. What I really love about the instagram stories features are the writing tools because I'm so creative and I know a lot of people watching here on creativelive are very, very creative. So you get a highlighter, you get a sharpie and you get a straight edge and you get a circular writing tool. And it's much easier, in my opinion, to use those tools and to be a little bit more creative and crafty within Instagram. So if that's part of your business and your brand, especially if you have a certain color that resonates for you can get a little bit more creative with that. So let me just show you a couple of examples of what I would use instagram stories for. So since I teach Instagram every day on the Instagram at expert, I'm teaching you an instagram tip And then because I was here, I wanted everyone that followed me on Instagram to know that I was going to be live today and I wanted to give a shout out to Joel. So I was. I knew it was gonna be here with Joel, so I specifically cue that up is part of my story. I put the creative live link so that everybody could watch it because a lot of what I do on Instagram is I bring people with me to those opt ins that I want people to go to. So whether I'm teaching a webinar or whether I am speaking on stage, I want to bring you with me if it's around. Instagram teaching Instagram And that's exactly what we did here today. So I taught a tip. I think it's my people volume here. All right, so that's not working. So the blame is not working, but you can get the idea. I teach people how to look high, look low when you're shooting instagram photos because you never know what art and textures are around you, and you just need to be have that instagram mindset. And then, obviously I played around with the throwback Thursday when you can use Hashtags to bring people into your stories. That way. On my personal account, I keep this a little bit more personal here. Those markers where you can do on point with your branding. This is me on stage at Creative Live. This is a call to action that you can do on Instagram to get people to go where you want them to. So if you have a strategy guy like we do, the link is in my bio. I literally say that so that people we'll grab that and because I'm going to be teaching an instagram webinar next week. I let people know that as well and then the accounts that I want a feature. You can take screenshots of any account on instagram that you want to give a shout out to that your followers would learn from so often I will take screenshots of other accounts and give a shout out to them because I know that Joel's big on this. The more you shine a light on other people, the more the light shines on you. And that's one of my favorite quotes. And I try to do that as much as possible with everything I dio. Now this butterfly filter that I showed you on Snapchat You can, for those of you just love Snapchat and like Instagram and are using both. You can take photos in Snapchat and download them to memories and upload them to your instagram story. So for those of you that love those snap filters and geofilters which are not present on instagram, which I think personally are great features on Snapchat, then you can do that. You can get creative with that, go to the home page and let's show people have stories are displayed in how you post or perfect. So we're on my at Supes amendment account. On the bottom left is the house that you want to click on, and then you want to click on the top left, where it has that plus sign. Well, hit him back up for just second. I'm going to show them this. So up at the top here, what you have These are now the stories that her friends that she is following or posting. So, rather than on Snapchat, where they list underneath your story, everybody else's stories air up there on top when you tap into them. Unlike Snapchat that you don't know how long somebody's story is going to be on Instagram, you could actually see there's a bar at the top and it's segmented, and as many segments as there are is as many, and I'm calling them snap. That's actually for lack of a better word. We're still calling them snaps and Instagram. Snapchat owns the word the way that Kleenexes all tissues, right? They just got it exactly. So I think that's a good analogy and you know, so here here is you can use that writing tool and here showing a photo shoot. And I know a lot of photographers watch creativelive, and that was our photo shoot that we showed on the SPC account. And so you can take people with you behind sneak peeks of things. So when you have a project that you're working on, or something that you're designing or something in progress, you can show that. And then you can feature that on your actual INSTAGRAM account so you can use your story to drive people to the actual account that you posted on now to drive him to anywhere. I want one of the other differences here. Is that what, like we tap on a random story, just like on Snapchat? We can tap through to go to the next segment, and if we're done with that person's story way, just swipe. It's got a little cool rotating cube effect to it couldn't swipe a few more times. This'll is a really nice feature, or if you're in the middle of a story and you want to read what they wrote and you don't want to go quickly, you just put your finger down on the story and you can stop it. I didn't know that. Did you? E I just learned something. You're learning something new, folks. Okay, so let's look at the, um Let's look at the analytics a little bit, Joel. So I'm logged in a soupy Zimmerman and at the top. Okay, so where the stories are, I'm sorry. At the bottom. Hold on. All confused. Those in Snapchat on instagram. So the bottom, right, this those three dots. So let's just first let people know that you can click the dots. If you ever feel like you need to report something or block something, you could go into those dots and do that. But what I really want you guys to see at the very beginning is when you click on your gear on the top, right? There is a gear that says story settings So you can hide your story from people that you do not want to see your story. So some of your teenagers or your kids might be hiding story. The parents are watching them, but this isn't, You know if there's a competitor or someone that you just don't want to be watching your stories, you can hide them or you can let everyone see it or people that you follow or no one and a lot of the big brands have this turned off like benefits cosmetics, which I love. I can't have reply to any of their snaps because they have This turned off because I bet they would get millions of people asking questions. And as you know, if you're on social media, you have questions, asked you. You want to answer all those questions and you would literally be on the phone all day doing that, although they probably have somebody community member doing that. But still so some of the big brands have that turned off. I don't think it's a great idea to you. I do not think it's a good idea. By the way, I'm posting this to Instagram. Okay? Of course. Okay, so one of the other things is when you're in your home base, I call this home based on Instagram, and it has that top plus a lot of people get confused, so if you hit that top, plus it takes you to connect to Facebook and connect to contact. So just remember, if you're going to add to your story. You have to click on the home button to actually add two story Joe. Let's do it. Right. And so you showed how they add to the story. Yeah. So now we can get the video. I don't know what Let me go. All right, Joel, Do you want to work? Creativelive And I'm teaching on Snapchat. Look who shows up. Boom Soon be she's everywhere. Okay, so we have that once you've done once you've done a video, you have 10 seconds. Just like Snapchat or a photo you can get super creative. So this is what I like. And this is what I think a lot of you guys will like. So you have You can do text overlay and I'm gonna dio What I typically do is shine the light on others. So obviously this is Jules show. So we are going Teoh let everyone know to follow Joel and I typically say on insta because I want anyone that I'm featuring who's falling my stories to know how to find people. That's in my story that they might not know. Now it's only white text as it is on Snapchat. But the cool thing about the the markers. I'm calling them the markers is that you have the highlighter on the far right. You've got the tilted marker, and then you get the fine tip, and then you have all your colors down here at the bottom. So I like to use bright colors in case you haven't noticed. And I click on the filter. I mean, the dial to make it a little bit bigger. And I'm just gonna brush over it clips that got white so you can undo anything. We're keeping it purple. So just to let you guys know, you have to change the marker and we have to undo it because we have to get this right and everyone makes mistakes. Okay, So you can color over it. You can make frames around it. You can undo anything you don't want to dio by pressing the undo button markers in the middle. Yes, yes, yeah, high. So I was just wondering how you determine what content goes on instagram stories and what goes on your Snapchat account. Great question. And I'm very, very strategic with what I do So on Snapchat, Like Joel said, I take you with me throughout my whole day so that you feel like you are living vicariously through my day as a You know, someone who travels a lot, speaks a lot, teaches a lot I want to take you with me, went to all the places that I travel and the little nuances, like Virginia said. Like my dog, Mr Cody is a big part of my snaps story. My eating needs his own steps like I don't need another thing todo But I also talk about my three golden rules on Snapchat to community first eat healthy and hydrate and move your ass every day. These air, my little personal nuances these in my personality pieces. This is my quirky personality and my guard. I'm real and raw on Snapchat. I'm a little bit more protected on Instagram because I teach Instagram marketing, and I always wanted just up level a tad so on my personal soupy Zimmerman. It's more of my personal, a little bit more polished of what I'm doing and on my business, it's always teaching instagram tips. Does that answer question OK, Sue, Thank you so much for joining us. This wonderful came in. Do you have a snappy buddy. Did I give you a snappy buddy? It? Um I don't know, but here, this is my gift to you. Thank you for coming all the way Here. Give it up for Super Zimmerman Thean Sigel Force Follow her on Snapchat and Instagram All the places at Supes Every right and I'll stick around for a while. You get more questions, Thanks to appreciate it. All right. Lots of storytelling. Goodness. And, um let's talk a little bit now. Actually, we have a quick question for you regarding instagram stories and Snapchat. Um, do you think that with the entrance of snaps Snapchat stories, there's a threat to instagram? And should people that are using one or the other gravitate towards both of them now that they have these options? Great question. So first of all, I don't like to should on anybody, right? Because we have to decide what's best for us. We do know that Snapchat is ahead of the game. They've got market share for this type of content and we are seeing steady, relentless growth on their behalf. So there is a very loyal audience to Snapchat. Does that mean there won't be people using instagram stories. Now there will be clearly it's going to resonate with some, especially those who already have a large following on Instagram. Would it hurt to try both of them and see where you get the greatest engagement? No, in fact, that's what I recommend across social platforms is try them out and discover a where you get the greatest pleasure. What do you enjoy the most and to where do you get the greatest engagement? If people aren't engaging with you on a platform, then you're not getting any results. Or if you're not having any fun using that tool than what's the point, perhaps it's time to try something else. So I hope that answers the question. I think so.
