Designing the Headdress

Let's go ahead and do our designing. So So, Jay Ko, why don't you take it away up here? This is going to play around a little bit. With what? Um what sounds good to you, And then I will help you make it. Well, I really like this strip with feathers on to start with, but is that cheating? Because there's not much more we could do. It isn't great. Okay, I like that one very much. Like a black and white as well. Wonderful. Um, for for the pieces that I prepared here for the class, I did cut some suede strips and you'll notice once heavier And once dinner, the heavy one would bees for the front, the thin 11 to be used for the back. And I, um I sort of learned this by trial and error. I bought a few Well, I initially but, um one height and it ended up being the leather with two thin. And so when I glued it, it wasn't strong enough. It absorbed whatever shape it with glued on to make sense. And, um and so I was actually I can show you an example. Here. I'm on the lining. And on this one I di...

d use individual feathers, but you can see how this thin leather it. Really, Um, this is perfect for lining because it squeezes on Teoh the leather cord and onto the backs of the feathers. But this is not as good for the front. So when you're looking at leathers, if you're going to use an exposed leather for the front of the headdress, you want something that's a little bit thicker that can afford to have some bumps behind it and not show those bumps off too much. So that's basically either You're using a leather for the front and leather for the Baptist, just softer, one on the back. Yeah, in that. That's mainly because that's shammy leather. Yeah, yeah. So how's how's the design going here in the studio? Christine, you've chosen the same feathers. It looks like you know what I'm still thinking about actually get a good comment about coloring feathers. Michelle be actually paints with feathers using watercolors and says afterwards, You know, like a paintbrush will retain color of the feather. It will stay that color. That sounds amazing, I guess even if you wash it will have a tent was really not actually, Michelle. Have you got a picture of that? Put that in our champion, Teoh, whom to relate the band. So that's flexible. Um, I I like to use about a 15 inch length, and so for the leather that I've cut for you thes air cut to 15 inches. And so I'll go ahead and hold this up on myself. Um, I'll turn around here, you can see it goes a little bit past halfway back on my head. And so this is a size that there will work for a baby for a child and for an adult. And again, that's the beauty of using a closure at the back that ties. So this is a nice all purpose length, so it works for the tiny hands, but it still looks good on on a dull head, and I think with the example that Jay Ko is wearing that one's about 17 inches. So if if you like it to go a little bit farther back, by all means, go ahead and lengthen it my best. So most of the pieces here, like I said, they're trims to about 15 inches But, um please feel free Teoh to trim them anymore. Um, So how about you two? Are you Are you set on your design? Yeah, I think I'm gonna do the two pieces. The brother. I need the ribbon. I guess I wonderful. I'm glad you're gonna use that. I actually haven't made one with this ribbon, but I I think it will be really beautiful. Which father is Will you use the goose feathers? Yeah. Wonderful. So that ribbon isn't trimmed. There's no two pieces. Yeah. Um, you know, I guess you guys don't have a ruler, but you just we can we can cover, Okay? Let me know if you need a ruler and I'll get the Santee. No problem. And I since I'm the only one with the cutting mat in the rotary cutter, I'm happy Teoh do any trimming that you might need. Okay, so we've got Have you ever done one where you've actually made a combination off? Maybe you like the feathers in the centre ribbon on the sides, Or is that just a bit too complex? Um, does he have a problem and joining it? I imagine these different material. You know what I might do is I might just do a ribbon base and glue individual because so, actually, that brings up a good point. Actually, why don't we do that with this one? So when we were the one we're doing here, why don't we take a plane and then we can see how you can place. Okay, I think that sounds one. Okay. Okay, great. Just changed the design. Okay, I think that's wonderful. Um, so speaking of, sort of using one piece that's all through the band and even the core that ties it in. In the design that that I has worked best for me, you'll notice that I don't cut a short piece of the suede lace and glue it on to the side. Because even though these glues are designed perfectly for working with leather, there's a chance that that could break. And so So I do extend the court all the way through, and then it makes it nice and sturdy. You're not afraid that that that that suede lace is going to break off and it just it feels a little bit better. So that's another one of those details that that can help make the headdress really gift, herbal and really, really something that'll last for a while and again, I think I think it's so fun. The idea of using one of these crowns or one of these head dresses as a dress up item, maybe for a child and then also as a core on the shelf. Both. So, um Okay, so we are going Teoh, go with leather, and then we're going to glue some feathers onto it. And so I've got some fathers down here I'm going to grab. Okay, so we have some beautiful guinea hen feathers, and that's a pretty pretty This is This is the father that I do know the what kind of bird it comes from. It does come from a guinea hen, which are beautiful, black and white, his speckled birds. And so, um, so those are some nice, bold feathers, and then we can play around with some some complimentary feathers as well. Sound good. Looks really good. Absolutely wonderful. Now, when you cut this particular just quite a few of our students Holly is actually using or Heather others using this one. Does it matter where you cut? It doesn't unravel a few cuts when you cut basis. Just I haven't had an issue with that myself. It makes sense that it could unravel over once included on that's going to secure it anyway. Exactly. Yeah. So the glue helps. Sort of check the freight on the edges stuff. Um, okay, So one more thing that I that I didn't mention before is some fun that we can have with complementary feathers. So I have a few A few, um, additional feather trim pieces here. And I don't think you guys down there have any of these, So please feel free to get in on these. These air really, really fun. Um, so what I've done before at times, with these, it's to actually double up and really and use. Use the white feathers for the height and for for the body, and then use the's shorter feathers as contrast. And I am I haven't just come with the boned. Yes. So, again, this is that feather trim that makes it really easy to work with. So I have I have here this. I love this trim. I got this. A bright tex here in San Francisco, which is they? It's sort of like the the mood fabric store of San Francisco s. So I'm afraid this 1 may not be accessible over the place, I'll admit, but, um, this one I found at just a regular craft store with the beautiful guinea feathers. And then I have one more that has some blacks and whites and browns in it. And this one's a little bit taller, which is nice. And so, you know, think about this. You could do a headdress with just this, and it's it's got less height, but, um, but it's it's nice and simple. Very pretty, you know? So I was really holding out on you guys keeping themselves of myself. Would any of you like Teoh you Some of this travel down? Okay, Um, are are you going to pass on this trim for your I think we're going to stick with the actual for you. I'll give you one more. Thank you, Tina. And then I have one more here. Um, and I wanted to go ahead in it and get, um, sort of an alternative to just the plain white, which I think is beautiful, but, um, but this is is more striped um, feather Look, which is also really nice. It's got a little bit of wildness to it. That's actually really pretty. Um, actually might work for, like, a Thanksgiving party. Something around that time of year where the white works better for the holidays or something like that. Yeah. So what? What kind of father is do you want to use for yours? I really like these individual ones because I'd like to see how well you know how we attach those and how we glue them. Says I guarantee that I'm gonna do it wrong. I like that too. Actually, I think that's really nice. Well, the U S state will stick with these old coming. Would you like to dio taking the head dress you're wearing as an example? We could do the white feathers that stick up, and then we could attach getting others. I've completely forgotten what I'm wearing. Way. One way it does. It gets really comfortable. I like the way you call the crown. I dio Thanks for reminding me. Wonderful. Okay, so now that we are all designs Well, are you guys all designed? Do you have any more questions? Can I use that individual piece that you have that you showed with this one? I know the like. The small, small right wing, like the at that one. Yes. Alright. Wonderful. Thank you. There we go. And so here, here again for the studio audience. For for tight closures, we have some some black suede lace. We have some white, We have some brown, and, um and then some of those pieces that we used earlier they would work for headdresses. The leather cord or the rat tail here is actually some more natural colored leather cord. But again, the suede lenses helped very nicely to to this address. So, uh, let's go ahead and get started here. You know, we could also use black leather. Let's do that. Yeah, because that will contrast well with White and Okay, so what I'll do here is I'm going to measure how tall is's. It looks like it's three inches, so I'm gonna cut it in half. So we're gonna have an inch and 1/2 with band, which is a little bit whiter than what you're wearing, which I think will be lovely. So, um, again using my cutting mat? Uh, I'm going to measure down an inch and 1/2 just using the lines on the map, which is so nice that I don't need to do any marking. Excuse me? Certainly. So fine. Going to trim against the ruler. Got off my line just a little bit. Look at that. It happened. That ruler Happy mistakes. Yeah, that's what my my middle school art teacher used to say. So what I'm gonna do here and, you know, you don't want overcorrect? I think we've all done that. But I'm gonna go right on the edge, And I'm just going Teoh, correct this and trim off that little edge piece that I left. Okay, so there we go. Um, how we doing In chat memories. Everyone following along with this? Yeah. Yeah, they're They're actually showing us some photos of very great Thank you for doing that. Yeah, And then also I mean, remind us all the uses of headdresses. You know, this is for a you know, you listed a few things, but I think people are you know, I would like to know what? Where do we wear these headdresses again? Yeah, I am. I think they're wonderful for kids. That's really that's really my That's that's how this idea originated. And, um, for for, um for Halloween. Last year, my daughter and I wore matching feather headdresses. So So that was really fun. Um, and what we've mentioned a few times now, that thesis of 19 thirties drivers that have a very popular on TV whereas it is actually quite a few of them have come back into fashion. I think a lot of people doing these holidays, particular Halloween. They went 2030 miles, and it is great for this. I'm going to Prague for Thanksgiving. So I'm taking this with me. I was gonna be the first guy in check with a feather crown, and I'll be the first girl in a crown hidden in a suitcase my TV wife comes everyone with. Yeah. I mean, there's especially new years thinking about news. And then, of course, all those props, you know, we do have a lot of people that are, you know, shooting things, they photographing, photographing all sorts of things. So, you know, creative props, Actually. Absolutely. Okay, so So now that I've cut our this leather piece and half were going Teoh, I'm going to extend this piece because I'd like to make it a little bit longer than this. Do you mind if I look at it on you? Okay. So be extending it about like that. So what I'm going to dio is is, um, is make a cut here on the diagonal that lets me connect these two. Okay. Um, so I'm gonna need some glue here in a minute. So I'm going Teoh, go ahead. And I'm sure that great. So I'll go ahead and get out a container for my glue. And, um and so the glue that I'm using for for the leather it's called fabbre attack. And it is this is again from Beacon, another great leather glue, which is also nontoxic. Is is Tandy leather weld. And so some of the first clues that I tried out for leather they were they were permanent glues, and they were very very, uh, they smelled. They smell very chemical. And so when I thought about a child wearing that, I didn't feel good about it. And so I looked into getting some non toxic glues and so fabric tack and the leather weld, it's it's again. It's it's, Ah, water based glue and it's it's white. This one's clear. The leather world is white and they all dry clear. So again they're pretty forgiving. So, yeah, if you want, I just escort me a little squirt of glue and my glue holder. And, uh and so to make the diagonal cut, I'm going toe overlap the suede here a little bit, and then I'm going to make one cut through both pieces, and that's going to make sure that that they line up perfectly that I'm not trying to get the same angle on two different pieces. Does that make sense? Perfectly. So those are my scraps. And now those two pieces will line up great together. And I don't want that that angle to be right in the middle of the forehead. So I'm actually gonna cut off a bit of the leather over here, but that's gonna let us extend it a little bit. And then this mother strip it had some rounded edges. So I'm going to cut off the rounded edges just for the sake of keeping it all straight. Or we could around that edge, Which do you like you like around the Dodger actually around, which is kind of cool. You know what? This is? Some to show our audience Exactly how you do that. Well, I'm going to do it. My hand. Oh, Profit. So I'm just going to, Iet I'm going Teoh just I That same radius on this side, it's not gonna be perfect. But that's okay. I'll never very easy. I'm actually gonna do the other side, because I made it. I made it smaller from just a different radius. This is this is what I dio. Pretty soon there will be no strapped left. Right. Okay, so I like that. Okay. And, uh so then over here, like I said, I don't want that right in the middle of the forehead. So I'm going, Teoh. I'm just sort of gonna eyeball this and I'll just make that so it's a little bit off to the side. And with black Black is pretty forgiving for for extending this piece of leather with some colors that might actually a little bit more challenging. But, um, like, is gonna make it easy for us. So now I'm going to round these corners so that each side matches up now each of our students had almost like a very square pieces. Very cardinal. Would you recommend trimming the letter on those? If you want to create a different shape, what do you think? It's best just to leave? It is a hard edge. It's all about your personal preference. Did anyone choose Do not trim the ends. So you like the rounded corner? I think rounded corners are great. I think that and I have a little corner around her for paper. It's possible that it could work through this leather. You'll never work again on paper, you know? Yeah. So? So to go ahead and attach this, I'm going to use some of my really thin leather, and I'm gonna go ahead and back. This. So, um, this is obviously not something that everyone needs to do for for their headdresses. But in the case of extending this, this is just a little run through on how I would do it. So I'm going to go ahead and trim this little guy. I should I'm just curious Genitals. The person in question. Are you ambidextrous? Because you seem to be able to switch. That's quite easily, you know? Okay, because you've been using both left and right for cutting anything I should say. Yes, I like. Okay, so we've got some glues. I'm gonna grab a paintbrush now. And, um So I'm going Teoh paint some glue. And this is a very tacky glue as well. You can see, So I'm It's stringing. So I'm just gonna twist it up. So I'm gonna, um, paint some glue on this piece of leather, Very string, and then I've got got my group's gonna stick it to the table. I've got my my black pieces on my diagonal lined up just the way I want them And I'm going Teoh sick, my leather on. And so now we've got a simple seal which which will seal even more So with lining of the leather right, that's already disappeared. That's really good
