What is Periscope & How to Use

Welcome to Creativelive. My name is Chris Jennings. We are here today to do a special broadcast all about how to use the live streaming app periscope, and joining me today is the co founder and CEO of Creative Live Chase. Jarvis. Thanks for having me, Chris. Welcome. It's good to have you here. You walk down, away, came into the studio, and we're going to talk today about the app periscope. Now, this is something that we talked a little bit about meerkat past. We've done a course on meerkat, but periscope in particular, this is something that has really been just skyrocketing lately and again, you've been one of the beta users. You've been using this from the start. So you're really one of the experts to talk to about this. That's why we have you here. So for people who don't know anything at all about periscope, sure. Why don't you tell him a little bit about your periscope? Is one of the first live streaming APS to broadcast directly from these little devices into front from the IPho...

ne. And it turns anyone into a broadcaster anyone into a consumer of that broadcasted video as well. It's a stunning interface. Absolutely beautiful. I got to give a shut up to Cavon and his team. Congratulations on the success. It's truly a stunning app, and it's really near and dear to my heart. Live Internet is something that has been, um, I've been very close to since since it came out originally, it was, um, it was back in the what were those things called? Um, when you broadcast that it was just the view of someone's desktop. What was it like? A weird little webinar and just having a uses that anyone no one uses that web just doesn't really do it. Yeah, Webinars, that's gross. It sounds like something out of game of Thrones. Yeah, um, but the reality is that this technology has been around. Creative Live was built on the foundation of live streaming, connecting you with real time with the world's top experts and photo video art design. And if you're new to create of I've welcome, you can learn from the world's top experts in real time here. Created by 24 hours a day, seven days a week and way back in about 2010 when creative I started the technology was real nascent. It was new. There was a lot of hiccups. Of course we were still doing it. But it's been near and dear to me. Over the course of the last four years, Company called Ustream was really, really early. They did have a nap. It was a little bit. I mean, you know, full shadow. To those guys. It was a way ahead of its time. That's the backbone for Creative Live, actually. But in this last, I can even say the last half year. This technology, specifically in handhelds advice handheld devices has completely taken off Periscope is, is crushing it. Yeah, it is really changing everything. The fact that they have that social component now periscope is really it's part of Twitter. It's built on top of Twitter. It's very much involved with that. So that adds more to the whole social aspect. It's not just this one on one. You're really broadcasting out. You're creating a following, and it's something that I know that you have used obviously in the past and with Creativelive. You have experience in cultivating this following, sharing it socially. But for people out there who haven't uses at before. What can they do with this? Like, how can this change their day to day interactions before we actually get into it? Cause I'm plugged into a monitor here. We can show the folks at home what it looks like to actually be on that, and we will just two shakes of a lamb's tail here. But before I go there just conceptually, the ability to broadcast to take anyone in your world who's paying attention, what is that you're doing to take them with you behind the scenes to the to the same things that you're seeing to be able to have this level of intimacy without any FCC license? There's no satellite trucks. There's nothing. It's just you and your phone. I broadcast a couple of days ago from the middle of a lava field in Hawaii. Just had a on a m. A. Hey, is that I'm here on Mars and to be able to have that intimate relationship, not just with broadcasting what I'm seeing, but bringing people into into the space with me and simultaneously that sort of thinking of the devices, specifically a broadcast device. But flip that around. I'm sitting, Um, I was commuting yesterday. Toe Oakland out toe, Watch the Warriors game and I was just participating in the lives of so many of my friends who were, You know, one person was in Europe. One person was, um, actually what? They were building something with their kid. Another person was on the ski slopes like this. The ability to connect with people in real time as a viewer and as a broadcaster is it's It's totally new and totally next level. You're absolutely right. It's a new philosophy. It's not just like you said sitting up that webinar looking into the camera and you with a background in photography. No, just kind of framing that and sharing that with the world. This is in between, sort of. You're sharing your world, but you're still experiencing the world, and it creates this whole new hybrid. Then you have the interaction of inter socially asking questions, and it's a shared experience and a wonderful I think, the shared experience component that is, you know, again, if you're at home and you're not quite sure what we're talking about just going download periscope. Um, it's a live streaming app and that that the the fact that it's live allows you to interact with the creator of that broadcast in a way that you've never been able to before. Maybe we just pop it open and show him what's going on here. Um, I'm gonna open up periscope. And while I'm you know what I'm gonna do? I'm actually just going to decide to broadcast in real time, so I'm gonna just It's very, very simple, actually. Maybe I'll review the interface here. These are people who I pay attention to on Twitter. Um, and that's integrated here into the app. Those folks that are on Twitter or now in periscope thes air, recent broadcasts, ones that, um, I have watched or these air again, My closest followers. Mashable. You can see Jon Gruber in there. Um, and these Chris Sokka and these air saved broadcasts these air ones that have that were live. They used to be up in this section here. I sometimes watch them sometimes didn't. And those folks chose to save this for later viewing, which will be able to see here in just a second. And that's a key feature here. That periscope offers is that you are able to go in. If you do miss it when it's live, you can see the little duration there. This was a couple of hours ago. Some of these broadcasts gives you a longer window. You have to experience that. Yeah, And let's see if, um, there's Chris Kantrowitz. Hello, Chris. There's Quest. Love. Nice to see all y'all. Um yeah. There you go. Well, let's actually broadcast with the heck. Let's jump into it. Yeah, let's show us how to broadcast out to the world. This lower left 10 button is looking at this feed. The middle button is the broadcast. But right before I do that, I'm gonna I'm gonna go over here to the people part of this, um, just to give the folks at home a little insight, these air suggestion these air people that I'm falling on Twitter and it's asking me if I want to follow them on periscope. Let's go and click the upper right hand corner to see my profile. A maniac photographer directors, you know, pulling from Twitter. Um, and I've got 15, hurts. We'll get to that in just a second. That's that's one level of interaction. And you can either talk to these folks or you can tap on the screen to send some love. You can see that I'm falling. people. Those are the folks that were saved on another screen that I had seen them broadcasting recently. And you can see that I have 3200 and four followers, people who are paying attention to me who will get pink as soon as I start broadcasting. There's also some settings tab in here. If you can see that I will get notified if someone follows me or it also gives me the opportunity toe auto save broadcast. So I've selected both of those things. Um, we're just gonna go back. You can see some of the you know, this nuts and bolts that you're familiar with on any other app share. Periscope allows you to send the link to build it down, though not someone else. So let's go to the broadcast section. What am I seeing right now? I'm not gonna say I'm seeing Christian and shoe. Um, again, the interface, your super beautiful. What am I seeing right now? We're gonna see talking about periscope b e r I S t o p e while broadcasting Oops. Broadcasting on periscope through Paris. Hope All right. And I'm just gonna hit the broadcast. I actually, before I do this is location. Yeah, I'm just gonna ask about that turned on or off. So that'll tell people where you're actually broken wherein broadcast which you may or may not want people to know for sure for sure. I can see lots of ways that you can use this in the positive and and the not so positive way um, you can privately broadcast your followers could come in handy. I'm not going to do that. And this integrates with Twitter. Would you like us to post a twitter or not? I'm gonna go ahead and leave that on. And now I'm gonna actually just start broadcasting. There's Ryan and our camera operator, Matt. Nice to see you guys. What? That's not a real fire between them, by the way over there. No. Okay, so now we're broadcasting on periscope, and I've just told the people that are paying attention to me what it is that I'm doing. And this is what I'm seeing. No. Yeah, I'm good. people join double tap and put this thing back toward my ugly mug. Everybody, how you doing? Low. Ah, you might. While you're probably curious, I'm broadcasting about periscope on periscope. And the reason we're broadcasting about periscope is I'm here right now with Chris Jennings. Hello? Who's one of the hosts that creativelive were in the Creative Life studios here in San Francisco? And we're broadcasting about how to use periscope. Um, it's a very intuitive app. So it's not like we're gonna be unlocking universal secrets here, but we're creating a course on creativelive about how to use this for the folks that might be a little more timid or interested in finding out a little bit more than just what the user interface looks like. Um, thanks so much for all the hearts. Um, And if you're new to creativelive, um, I'll introduce it to the folks and friends of mine on Periscope. Creativelive is the world's largest live streaming education company were focused specifically on creativity. Folk classes in photo and video aren't designed music and audio craft and the maker movements, and then how to make money and have amounts life in all those things and entrepreneurship. So 145 year tuning in right now. And this is a great way this very, very meta again doing a class right now about periscope. You can see what's happening, Chris. Yeah, yeah. So walk me through what's going on on the screen here. You see, these people are commenting. That's popping up right there. So you have those users and then that number down in the corner. That's how many people are viewing, right? Correct. All right. And that's clearly jumping very quickly. There's 151 people, and they are watching from all over the world. Maybe while we're queueing this thing up. And as we're starting to build some interaction, you can tell us where you're tuning in from. I love to find out who's paying attention to what it is. The rain rain, the receptions. A little slow. Sorry. I don't know what it looks like there where you're from. I think we're on a pretty fast. Yeah, I should be here on our, um But, Chris, if I could tell you a little bit more about it you see, in real time here these are comments from people. On the other end of the up, they got a push notification that said that someone that they're following that be me is live streaming. They get a push notification You conjoined the stream and that's what's happening right now. So Birmingham, Alabama, we see Ontario, Canada. Um, we see Dale India. Oh, yeah, Belgium. Sweden. Excellent sells. Amazing. It's not only is it is it cool looking? Yeah, it s so beautiful. But it has this great way of creating a level of interaction because I can read these comments in real time and respond to them. So feel free to ask a question if you like an all address it directly just to demonstrate the app and all in the meantime, while those air coming in high from New York, Baltimore, Detroit, What's up? You certainly noticed these heart eso explain these hearts. I'm seeing them coming there flooding up. It's beautiful there. The base that looks great. So that's obviously some form of love. People are enjoying this. Yes, for sure. And what these folks are doing is they're tapping on the screen and tapping on the screen. It's the equivalent of of sending love, sending positive vibes, clapping, for example, something like that. And so there's 103 people now, and maybe they're going to go ahead and hit their hearts and help us demonstrate to the folks that are gonna be looking at this, um, at this education video at some point in the future. So they're sending love from Where were they? They are anywhere in the world. Is the magic creativelive? Someone asks, Who asked that Creative Life Studios in San Francisco. Thanks for all the love you guys. Saudi Arabia's tuning in the people who are watching us right now. They know pretty well how to do it. There's a couple of feet that's true. There's a couple of features that would like to share with you. There's one. And I know Ryan is broadcasting from the newly formation, uh, periscope on Creative Lives account. There's you have the ability down in the in the user tab to actually invite other people to the broadcast. So that's a pretty cool thing. Like you can invite your followers followers of viewers on periscope to join other people Paris coping in real time. So that's just under the the, um, the personality tab, which I'm not gonna cut off our broadcast so you can see that, right? Maybe we can cut that in for the class. And I don't know if you're unable to invite some folks over there. Ryan, I'll show you what Ryan is doing now. He's use periscope thing. He's on a table over there. This is what it looks like behind the scenes here. It is, indeed 11 36. And and there you have it. So back to me now back to myself and Chris Jennings again. If you're just joining us, I'm chased. We're doing a class about periscope on periscope, right? So let's touch on a few other things. Here. Have some questions. Well, I want to talk a little bit more about some use cases here now. Obviously, this is working well for us broadcasting in this way, and we've talked about the educational aspects of it, but we've seen celebrities using periscope in a number of different ways. Now, for instance, we saw Aaron Paul from breaking bad, who's been using this quite a bit. And he's actually been doing these live interactions. He's been talking to his wife and just broadcasting these things. And it's It's so empowering for people of all walks of life. But to see celebrities use this as a way to have that personal connection that they may not get from people watching their show or just from watching their movie, it adds a whole nother level of personality. Yeah, and the ability to do to connect with other people in real time. Not through some Layton sort of YouTube comment or even Twitter. You kind of get to it when you have time. Um, same with Facebook and whatnot. So the ability to tap into two one another's worlds. I have two modes of operating. One. I'm experiencing something in real time. I'm I'll actually use the example of the sunset. Those you followed me? No. That day before yesterday I was in Hawaii and often I will not take pictures of beautiful moments because that's the mindset of a photographer. Like Oh, I can't wait to take a picture. I mean, they're taking in that sunset or one of the things that I did a few days ago was I enabled the people across the world toe watch something beautiful to see the same thing that I was seeing. So someone like Aaron Paul, whether he's doing a rehearsal for the next breaking bad, or I saw him do an interview with his wife if he brought a hey, had a party and had a guitarist friend of his in, um, you're able to bring people with you, which I think is a huge, huge, powerful thing, and to connect in real time in a way like again. I'm reading these comments and I'm sorry. I can't both talking. Answer your questions at the same time. I'll get to that in just a second. Um, the sunset, for example. I was just, like, literally watching. I broadcast the last three minutes of the sunset in Hawaii Sun going down. It was just so beautiful. And for the folks that were in in the Midwest and New York, and even in London, we had, you know, countries tuning in from all over the place, they were able to participate. They were able it was, it's as close as they can get to experiencing it. Yeah, and they were sending a lot of love from all over the world. It was a really cool way. I feel like I was connecting to the people who were who were on the other side. Yeah. I mean, there's so much interaction there. For instance, if you are watching a sunset and you have people charming in from around the world, they Conseco tilt the phone up a little bit. I want to see this. I want to see that it becomes an experience that they are crafting. Not just a one way. If you were to take a photograph, it would look beautiful. People would appreciate it, but this is a whole other level, a whole nother level. And that interactivity, for example, the comments coming in right now How true that is. Um, we see we see the hearts coming in and I've had people say, you know, here, tell me where to point the camera. And I said, Someone asked me to show on the palm tree So I was able to show him the palm tree. The sunset, Hawaiian Hawaii was awesome. Thanks again for that. The connections tough Bradley Cooper. Yes, I do look like that. I get that every day. Used to be cute and clever. Now know he gets what he looks like Chase Jarvis. I'm sure all the time, too. Yeah, I'm sure way actually have some mutual friends. And they've said it's weird. I just gotta I gotta tell you. But again, the ability to connect with other folks in real time in my mind is that is next level on periscope has done in a way that you can both from a broadcaster, like I can bring people what I'm doing right now. Is this what it looks like? You say this is what it looks like in Studio D at Creative Live. When when we're recording something, I'm gonna double tap the camera here, turn around. Got a couple of cameras. There's Matt. I'm at. Yep. Ryan and Ryan. The Ryan Ryan couch. Yeah, Ryan Couch. There's Chris. And again you can see all the lights and whatnot. But here's thing. You don't have to have all this fancy studio stuff again. I was doing this from a beach in Hawaii and just people were joining in to participate in life, which that that was cool. I just Someone asked, Are you involved with this product? The answer is I'm involved in, and then I'm a passionate user I am and one of the beta testers that have had the good fortune of being on periscope for months before it was released just this past week. But I'm not an investor and advisor. I do have a lot of respect for cavon and the crew that developed the app, though, Um, someone's got a poor connection. They say, Oh, man, I'm really sorry. Thank you for sending the love If you want to share the broadcast, I'm grateful. I don't know if it's me who has a poor connection or you, Um, but again that the fact that we can broadcast I was broadcasting again using, um, Let's let's change the example from last time of the sunset Example and go to last night. I was at the Warriors Suns game. There was a minute left and it was a tie ball game, and I broadcast the last gosh that last minute which took three or four minutes cause there's some time out. But again, I felt like I was literally able to bring people from all over the world into the stadium, because when you're watching it on TV, sure, you get all kinds of commentary in that stuff. But I was able to point the camera at the things that folks that folks wanted me to point the camera at. And you know that the interaction, they got to feel the person on my right, the person on my left when the stadium would erupt. You know, you were there in a way that TV can actually bring you, so yeah, yeah, I mean, I think that's that's a big point there is that this is going places that haven't been gone to before. And as we sort of wrap up this demo here, I'd love to get your take on sort of the future of this and where it's going. And I think you mentioned something. They're being at these live events we've had some people say, Oh, poor connection. Hard to see what's going on. But as that that gets even better. People after faster connections, they can go wherever they need to go and be connected at all times. There's just gonna be more clever usage for something like this as the cameras get smaller, as people are using, you know, wearable technology, watches, glasses, different things like that. There's gonna be a whole new way for people to experience things like this. So what is your take on that? Like, where this is going, Um, my taking that is that it's it's still quite early. It is the the the The user interface, in particular of periscope, is just absolutely gorgeous. Um, the idea that this ability to broadcast will be more and more subtle, like right now it's very clear. I'm holding a phone up and pointing it around, you know, Google Glass. That was really awkward, that it was on people's faces. This I feel like there's a really clear message that, hey, I'm walking around broad carrying. But I think the ability to connect people more meaningfully, um, is a huge part of the next chapter of this device of this app and others that air like it a little 11 layer deeper. Like what would What would a good use cases You mentioned celebrities? Yeah, um, was not no disrespect to celebrities. I feel like that's a great way for them to connect authentically with the people who care about the art, but they're making if they're making art. Um, a person like Aaron Paul you use that example, I want to go behind the scenes with Aaron Paul Iron Pot met here in a couple times. Amazing guy. I want to go behind the scenes, breaking on breaking bad. And that's just one little example. I I know there are folks who are doing teaching. We're doing. This is very meta. We're doing a class about periscope on periscope and recording it for creative life, the teaching aspect of people just sending up. Here's how to play the guitar. For example, a friend of mine, Monica Guzman, shoes. Ah, friend in Seattle, like demonstrating how she plays a particular song on her guitar. And you can just start to connect the dots about what's possible. You know, learning behind the scenes and things. News is a huge thing. I'll comment about news for just a second. Um, a friend of mine, Shane Mack, really is early. Beta user of periscope stumbled on the big fire in the mission about two months ago, was the 1st 1 of the first people on the scene, stepped out of a cafe, huge fire, and he was recording that I've talked earlier about the psychology. Should you shoot Or should you not shoot? But there was a big write up in TechCrunch. I actually got a little quote in there, but it was It was about news breaking news. And And my wife, Kate, she's watched me watching this and Oh, my God, Is that happening right now in real time, like, Yeah, and she just was transported in the future. She said, this changes everything. You get to go along on this ride. So, um, again, I wanted to say thanks for tuning in again. We're talking about how to use periscope on periscope. Really making a class here in Studio D in San Francisco. Creativelive about periscope. Um, talk to me a little bit if you have any questions before we sign off. Thank you so much for the hearts for sharing broadcast. It seems like there might be a little bit of a delay for us, but for the people, there's a couple 100 people have come and gone over the course of the last minutes. Um, shout out any questions from you. Chris, do you feel like you know how to use this thing in a way you didn't before? Yeah, I think This is just a good example. We we got so meta here, we're showing exactly how to use it. While we're talking about the broader area in general, I feel pretty good about it. It's like you said clean interface. It's very intuitive for those of you out there who haven't used it yet. Pick it up, Take a look at it. Very simple to use. And for people out there who are new to Creativelive, we'll make another note. Go to creativelive dot com, check out what we're doing. Learned some of the other courses. We've actually also done a course on meerkat to give you another view there on some of the live streaming that's going on. So go check that out and we're gonna be back with lots more on creativelive. Go check out creativelive dot com for all of our courses. But for right now, that's all we've got. We will see you next time
