What is UX: User Experience

Hi, everyone. Welcome to today's course. Um, so just a little brief background about who I am. I am a professional UX designer. I work full time in UX now, But actually, where I came from is graphic design I graduate school doing graphic design. I learned I'm just traditional international and just west designed, like, very traditional. And my focus was in packaging design, actually. And after I graduated, I found that the tech road is much more exciting than the traditional production line were the speed and the collaboration between team members is just more amazing. So I kind of got stuck and fell in love with the tech. Then later on, I started noticing that there are a lot of methodologies that I can apply from packaging design back Teoh, um, back to just product design in Digital Rome. And then it was later where I found out. Okay, So what I've been doing all this time is called user experiences on because you are designing for users such as If you're opening up a packaging, right...

, if you be bought a brand new laptop and then you're opening up the white box and you're you're kind of, um, holding up and then you let the bottom box lights down. That's a really cool opening ceremony for a packaging from a packaging perspective, and it's the same thing. It's the same excitement that you should give to your user. One. They're going through your APP for the first time. So that's where I saw the connection. And it's sort of collect to me that, hey, you know what you exercise really cool. So on this for this course today is for those who want Teoh. I understand what you excess. Obviously, it's Ah very popular buzzword right now, and a lot of the people who are tuning in are wondering. OK, so what is you, X So this is going to give you a taste of what it is. Maybe you are a graphic designer like me before, or maybe you are an entrepreneur or you just pick up the word you like somewhere or you see yourself. I'm doing you expert. You don't really know if that's the actual thing you're doing. So by the end of the day you will learn what it is. The origin of ed of you X, where it's going and if you access the right career choice for you if you want to become a professional. Yeah. Hurry. So So what does ux And maybe you don't even know how it's pronounced? What? It sucks. Um, so you exes User experience. You might also see it condemns into u E cause experience starts with the but, um, I think is interchangeable. Um, You X is the more common abbreviation. And just to give you a unlike a proper definition, um, user experience encompasses all aspects of the end user's interaction with the company, its services in its products. So this is written by Jacob Nielson and Don Norine. They are two prominent figures in the U X industry. You will probably see me mentioning their names again throughout this course. And let's just take a look at that sentence and lotus and gin A low bid. Okay, so and user and interaction, those two arctic sort of broad and they can be anything, right? So if we take even closer, look so end user who is using the product, who will be affected by the product and who will be in contact with the product, and they might all be very different people and users can me customers. So the people who actually purchased, uh, maybe an application and who are actually using the application throughout their day to day lives. They can also be customer supporting those who needs to talk to the customers and help walk them through the application. They can be the marketing team, so they can be the people in the back who are doing producing content to feed into the application. While they're part of the users to um or, yeah, the marketing team. They can be content producer. So marketing team might be trying to figure out. OK, what is the next, um, came paying? We can launch using this application. Um, condom producers are thinking, OK, what is it? Next big thing that we can feature on the any application. So the user will get fresh content all the time and it won't. It will be fresh. And, um, they won't quit out of this app and go to a competitors, right? And then there's also the stakeholder. So those who invest in the app those who have a stake in the app and they want the up to be successful so those air. It's not just the customers. Most of the time, we only think OK, it's just the people who are downloading. Yeah, but now it's like a whole ecosystem behind surrounding the product. And let's not forget about these guys to. Even though they are not direct and users, they are also part of the product lifecycle. So when you're building a product, you have the client's point of contact. Maybe it's look project manager on the client side. If you are doing consultancy, um, they can also be product owner. So those who are in conversation with the stakeholders and making sure their needs are met and making sure the product is on track. Um, project manager software engineers who will actually be developing the application as well as fellow designers. Maybe you are not the sole designer on this project, so you have to talk to other people and then make sure everyone is on the same page when you're building the product. So that's a lot of people, and I think an essential part of what I do is to make sure that all, if not most of these users are taken, cared off or at least their voices are being heard. And I think that's very important because user experience touches every single user. It's not just one user is not just one person you're going after, because if that's the case you're designing and have only for one person, and that's not very profitable. Okay, so the next topic we're going to tackle is interaction. So end users interaction with the company, its services and its products. So interaction can be How does it feel to me when I'm using the application? How does it look to me Is that good looking is a ugly? Is it really boring? Is exciting. Does that actually solve the problem for me? Or is it kind of It's just gimmicky, and you're like, Oh, ha ha, this one And then you just put it down Great. Um, doesn't meet my needs. And does it help me reach my goals? And you can see that a lot of these are very their personal and their subjective. So depending on whichever user you're asking there, I think it can be different kind of answers, and they are dynamic. So let's say version one. You come up with something the user hates it Virgin to you, improve the application a whole lot, right? And now, all of sudden, everyone loves it. And then maybe you come up with one of the up update, and then everyone hates it again. So you can kind of see your reviews. Fluctuate, maybe think of it like a restaurant review, right? And then you can kind of see people who are reviewing in 2013 says, Oh, I love it. And then maybe 2014 you got a new manager, and then things are not going well, right? So it goes now and have a little bit, And then you improve again. And so it goes up again. Um, and the reviews don't have to be just to side answer. It can be is not just bad or good. So I'm just going to give you a little bit of tastes of one, and experience is good, is basically saying Oh, my God, this is awesome. Um, I want to show this out to all my friends. Just showing off this new application I downloaded. Look how cool I am or I am in the six spot of the waiting list. I'm going to get this before all my friends, and I'll just make a tweet about it and just make them jobless rate to sell it. That's really good, because sport of mouth is a great tool to market your AB. And now let's look at the bad side. This is the worst thing I've ever used. I'm never using it again. Or sometimes they can't even quit out of a bad application. Think of, um, if you are working at an office and you are forced to use Microsoft Ward or like PowerPoint, um, or you have to use one of those Ah, internal business tools And you you're thinking, Oh, my God, if I can just use maybe, um, using, keynote or using Google Doc and I can actually collaborate live with my coworkers instead of doing this, uh, doing some edit save and then send it via email and then coming back and open it again and then saving. I guess I was just version after version of files, and you're like, Oh my God, I can't This is the worst thing I've ever used. But there's no way I can quit out of it because it's part of my job. Right. So, um, that's something that we also talk about in enterprise. You X is tell too big the lives of these people a little bit better.
