Video Optimizing Part One
Let's go up to our, uh, collections we have our video we have let's go up here to our video clip let's find one of our video clips and, uh got a video clip and we're all ready to go and video is not supporting develop module remember we talked about this first day on windows? It says ha ha ha totally uncalled for it did not need to do that video's not supported develop montreuil we just have spent the last three days playing with the develop module, seeing how far we could push it doing all this cool and groovy stuff and you promised me that we were going to play with video. You can't I'm sorry I lied actually, no, you can but you need to know that secret mickey mouse club handshake to get your access to all this luscious goodness that we were just talking about the video. So we're gonna come over back to our library module and that library module is sitting there and it says I can do video you can click over here on the play but this is our little tonga clip. We're going to a little s...
lideshow related to the islands of tonga and so I can play it great we've been in play video for a while and like like him for added this little icon down here just click on it and this little icon is going to allow us to come up here and change the clipping of our video clip which we're going to need to do if you can't trim it right every time you're at the proverbial smith wedding and you're using your dslr click you'd better start filming before the action comes up you know if you're not filming before the cake goes down in the face gets shoved up the nose of the bride you know what a moment to miss so you're going to be shooting it so but you're going to want to trim it so what you're going to do typically is you're going to come up and hit play until you see ok that I like that why see the beach and then you come over here and move it and this little in point will stop wherever your current play head is so again let's zoom appear so you can see it will come up here and we're starting it I go I want to stop it right there so I'm gonna stop and then click drag and it stops right there so you know exactly where you want to trim it again you can start the play head again you're watching what you're going to do I only need a few seconds I wanted to come up until here click take the last section and it will stop there so that's how you're setting the in points now what you're probably going to do in your clips if you're like most people shooting video is you're going to leave the camera running if there's something going on again will use the proverbial cake cutting scene you don't know what's going to happen you think you maybe even if you're smart you passed the groom when you're planning on shoving the cake up the bride's knows because I don't want to miss that and the person may replied, no, I want to stay married so I'm not going to do that however you want to do it, you're going to keep filming it and the thing to remember here is I've trimmed this but there's five other cool things you know uncle frank came in here and you know, kick the table and that fell down and then the cat came up here and the glass is broken so you've got all sorts of things but you've only need a few seconds out of this clip. The great thing about here working in video in light room is that command apostrophe works on video in other words, virtual copies so you can make his many virtual copies as you want and re clip out what you want out of each one remember virtual copies something it if it's down in that film strip it's ready for output you can put it into your slide show you khun do whatever you want to and you can do the effects it acts as if it's a completely separate piece of video, when in reality, what we're going to do on this second clip is we're going to come over here and we're going to use this portion of the image of the video clip and now I when I had to look away from the window for a second to, you know, talk to the stewardess. I clipped that out now back to another little island came on, I do a commander control apostrophe I've got another video clip. Now I'm gonna come in do the big finish when the you know pelican came in and smashed into the window and the plane went down. Whatever virtual copies or your best friend when dealing with video. It's awesome. How simple and elegant that isthe command apostrophe makers many clips, as you want, come up here great. The challenge is we still have a bunch of clips that do not play well with the developed module and that's, just a crime. So how are we gonna get around that? And what we're going to do is come over here to this other little icon, click, and there are two things that you can do here, said poster frame. Means that the current frame here is going to be down in the film strip so you can figure out what you're doing because if you started you know, on the cake cutting and your poster frame is the closet that you pulled the camera out of before you shot it, it doesn't help you understand what's going on so you take your play head until you get the cake cutting and you set the poster frame and now what you see down in the film strip is the cake cutting again it's essential and video you need to know what you're working with but this is where the exciting thing is capture frame capture frame is going to take and create a j peg file from your video clip and if we take a look down here we're still have the same video clip here and you're going to look around for that clip and this is where it can be a little disconcerting based upon how your sort order is on that new piece of, uh graphic that never existed before there's a good chance because it's brand new didn't exist before it's a j peg file is sitting at the end of your film strip that's the exact same thing where we're looking at it's all the color remember video by definition is like is basically a cook j peg every setting in your video camera is cooked into that file there's there were just starting to get to this concept of shooting raw video, which is going to be really cool, but now all your video formats are basically a flattened j peg, you know, environment that image right there has all the information for your video that you want to have access to, and that obviously can go into the develop module that's the secret mickey mouse called handshake, you need to capture a frame from the video, and now you can take all our luscious goodness and apply it at this point and then what we're going to do let's go ahead and we'll kind of do a little bit of our tango. I mentioned that some things are not possible. The shadow and highlights and things like that or not totally applicable. Let's do an auto in terms of our white balance in here, we can use things like our saturation. We can't have clarity. Yeah, I know breaks my heart. I know I was hoping that a light room five that they would add the ability to do clarity. But you can't. You do have access two things like your hs l so if I come over here to my hugh I could do anything. I wanted that kind of yellow final on a move that yellow and make it a little bit more toward the orange or take that saturation cause that's getting a little bit carried away in terms of that, I like the saturation of my, you know, palms are like the saturation of water, but I, you know, I don't need that yellow on terms of the sand, so I can kind of neutralize that have access to all of that. I can, I do have access to color, and I do have access to I mean contrast, and I do have access to the curves if I wanted to find tune it. So if I come over here to my curves panel, I obviously can go and do my little cross processing effects, but in this case, if I wanted to take those, I'm shadows in here and dark in them up, I can take my shadows, okay, and add a little bit of pop by just taking my shadows down without plugging at my mid tones. So that's, why I wanted to touch briefly on especially this linear point curve aspect of the curse panel, because it is going to allow you to do stuff that you would normally do as part of the tango. Ok, we could add other elements to it we could add r c p a tones to it via either this split toning or the curves, as I mentioned here, but here is our before after so the fact that you can do thiss optimizing of your video is fantastic because it's probably why the vast majority of you that aren't shooting video aren't shooting video because you shoot a still shot and you go, I can polish this thing so it sings it's going to be you know, the angels will weep at how great my print work, and then you shoot a video of the same scene and you go, I'm gonna showing that to anybody, it was an overcast day. I can't I mean, it looks awful. We have such a high expectation as we should of our print images, the fact that we can't take that and take it into that makes a sad as it should now you can, you can use the basic settings basic panel, but the overall settings that you've worked for your still images like is this, and then you can apply this to your video clip and how you do that is you come over here, we're working on the j peg here's my video clip I'm going to command click on this other image here I'm still in the developed module where I did all my wonderful goodness to my j peg frame capture the synchronized button is there just like it's been this entire time? I say sink and now I can say check all because there's no way I'm not going to do as much as I can here's my bait my basic exposure exposure contrast white clipping remember shadow highlight wish it tone curve great actually used it treatment color saturation vibrant I used it I'm gonna have split toning even though I didn't use it that shows you that that's available here's your process version these things are not available it's great it's awesome is that his cools it could be no if you really wanted to do edging hansman a bunch of stuff remember you can take video take it as far as you can and light will bring into photo shop and photo shop you can bring in your video is smart objects and then apply any filter that you want any adjustment layers you know if you said an adjustment layer on top of video clip it will affect the video clip so photo shop is incredible at fine tuning video we're just going to say synchronize here I go back to the library where we can see it and then here is our new video clip so that is how you're going to do it if you wanted to what we're going to do after we take a quick break, let's pause that and jump over to a another little clip that we have right here just to show you that effect because the cool thing comes in with where we do our video, but then this is a little film strip that adobe has provided for those of us who do teaching on it, we can come over here find a representative frame and so we've got we want our models in the in the frame here. What are we going to do in orderto take this into the develop module capture frame, capture frame it's going to come down here? Here's r j peg sitting here as soon as we click on r j pig there, you're going to notice you can't play it because it's no longer a video clip, you go to the developed module and then what you're going to start to do is you're going to start making presets for video, and some people may even do, you know, videos that to our antique ing or cp atoning or as I mentioned before, we have a chess eleanor disposal, so in terms of that, we can take our, you know, red's up, we can take our greens all the way down, leaving just read, we can take our luminess for that green, you know, we can do a heck of a lot of special effects to our video and do exactly what we just did before which we're going to take this click on our two images including our video clip synchronize it synchronized all and then when we come back over here to our video clip, we now have our sepia tone split toned de saturated except for red video clip ready to go okay needed to get to that point because I know that you guys won't come back from the break in case you see that okay questions jane three seven seven seven asked can noise reduction be done a million now? No if we do let's go a bit back to that develop montreuil we've got r j peg here we'll hit are synchronized these are the only things that you have at your disposal, okay, so in terms of what you're looking at of noise reduction, um a detail no it's two processor intensive is the term why it's not being done obviously could do anything, but they realize if you're working on literally tens of thousands of frames at some point you'd start complaining if they allowed you to do it and then it took you a week toe process that clip you go, it doesn't work it's broken they would rather take it out have you not wine whine about the fact that the features not there but anyway so these are what's going on here your lens correction is not in here you're obviously not cropping in terms of a preset there's no spot removal to it your post crop of being yet your local adjustments noise reduction sharpening clarity are not there what you do have which is very powerful curves we say on how you can do that for doing luscious stuff related to skin tone and cross processing and portrait you have said in your black and white point exposure in contrast your mid tone values of what you have access to your white and black point you're white balance to be able to find tune that you're shooting video out in the field there's a good chance you're not going to get the white balance is not as easy to white balance especially shooting with a video camera or your iphone or whatever your color effects you can put in here which includes all your ss that h sl which remember because you have luminosity is part of a chess health you could do a huge amount of your total correction in h s l even though you don't have the basic panel so don't forget that and you do have split toning for doing cpi effects or warming or cooling your shadows or even doing ah again another color correction remember the way you do a color correction is you had the opposite of what you have too much of if your shadow's air to cool, you can add the opposite color in split toning and actually a split tony for color correction so all of these you actually do have a lot I don't want to hear any whining there's a lot here and if you want to you could take it as far as you can and then take it into footer shop exported as a video clip taken into photo shop and there you have every single thing that's possible in photo shop adobes evil because they just start you in light room and you moved a photoshopped video and the photo shopped there you can't do everything you need so then you go to premiere on their backs and I wouldn't say that evil eyes be that's a wonderful work flow that they're allowing you access to especially it actually brings up the cloud if you're playing with the stuff the fact that you get every piece of software that was ever made for that you know cost of a subscription where you can play and that's actually what we as artists as digital artists, photographers, graphic designers whatever the fact that we have the ability to now have access to those tools for the same price is, you know, a minimal set this maybe especially with everybody in the world being a photographer this adding of a video adding of this other element adding of the website adding of this this is we're going to see after our break this ability to do a video based slide show if you're not adding this to your corporate work client work even doing it for family and friends, you know, that's just silly it's so easy to make a video clip and that's what we're sharing, what youtube you know, all of our apple tvs, everything else like that, we're sharing images and videos more than ever before you're going to be able to do stuff here that nobody else is going to be able to do and it's actually very, very simple. So it's now is a great time to explore different media that you haven't before, whether that's, you know, in design for doing page layout or a video for premier or whatever. So it's actually a great time to experiment with different media types. Yeah, just crazy amazing audio are you going to touch on that later? We are we haven't actually edited the clips together on this case right now what you're doing when you trim a clip and add this to it, the audio that was part inherent in the file is still there. The great thing is as soon as we get into which will do right after the break, theobald ity to combine these video clips that's exactly what we're going to, we're going to be able to override or combined the audio will be able to add music soundtracks will be ableto had a title. We'll do cool and groovy stuff. All right, one final question and I know we talked about color correction, but you know, she asked, is it possible to change the color of something in a video like change the color of the sky, too? You could in the same sense that you have h s l if we come up here, we can take what was read and we can make it orange or we can make it toward the purple. I can't make it green because the slider doesn't go that far. You could turn blue in the red, you can't turn blue into red, you have a shift. Basically, color is all based upon this idea of three hundred sixty degree color wheel the degrees that you have at your disposal and moving a piece of color is limited a supposed to photo shop if you wanted to do this and photo shop, you could, because the hs l in photo shop actually is three hundred sixty degrees it's a complete around the color wheel, so photoshopped does allow you to do that sort of complete shifting of a color the way that we've done completely recovering of images. In light room, so far has been using the adjustment brush, and you can't use the adjustment brush on a video clip. So, yes, you can't do that. Can you find two in the skies? Can you make what is a subtle sky? Um, much more vibrant? Absolutely, because you can take that and shift it from a powder blue to a navy blue, and you can take it from a light to dark, using that h s l so you and also access to the curves. So can you intensify a sky or make it, you know, more exaggerated? Yes. Do you have access to saturation and things like that? Yes. Can you fix your white balance to find tune that, yes, so there's a ton that you can do for your color work.
