Overview of Lightroom's Modules

Light rain is going to make you happy it is good for your health why can you imagine? I'll try to have an analogy here that'll that'll work really great so imagine if you're a female and you love shoes he loves you so much and you go into and you have this custom closet made and florida sailing on every wall are your beautiful shoes and it makes you happy just walking in that closet, right? Just looking at him. Which one am I gonna wear you look at that. Shoes are like little works of art your photos are little works of art I don't care if you're a hobbyist or you make your living from photography once you start using light room and it's going to make you happy just opening the program because you're gonna be surrounded by your beautiful imagery, your beautiful works of art and you're not gonna have any self loathing anymore about I need to organize my photo library. I need to rate my photos, you're not going to dread importing you're not going to dread organizing you're not going to d...

read processing light room is going to make you happy it's going to improve your life and this sounds hope like hockey is not I'm serious it's like walking into a room being surrounded by your your favorite things you can get to your favorite things really, really fast because we're going to key word we're going to star rate we're going to be able to filter so you're going to be able to find the images that you want faster, you're not going to have the self loathing because they're going to be organized and managed and handled and your photo collection is going to be able to scale with you as your you know as you take more more, more photos this sisk it sounds funny, but it is going to make you happy on a level that you just really can't imagine so that's another added benefit of using larry you did not get that with photoshopped in any way, shape or form for the shop does not make you happy ever until you master it then you're like a whole thing in this, but yeah, what room is just fabulous? So let's go over to light room? Shall we let's take a look at it? Like finally here we are in light room and I want to spend just a few moments giving you an overview of, uh, what we're seeing here in light room basically, what you're going to do is you're gonna use the library module so these air the different modules that we have available in the program, so we're going to do all of our importing and organization rating sorting, filtering stuff in the library and that's kind of easy to remember and think about that you know my organizing my managing then you're going to be in the library the developed module is for correcting your images or perfecting them now a lot of the structures when they teach light room bill they'll wisely tell you that light room is not for fixing things that went bad in your camera you're supposed to have them a great exposure in camera well since I was a designer first and I master photoshopped years ago don't say I don't care what happens in camera I do obviously care what happens in camera but I know the world's not gonna end because I can do anything I want long is the picture is sharp I'm good but really technically you're supposed to be perfecting and fine tuning your exposures here and light room not fixing a crappy one but whatever again there's no light rain police so let's take a peek over here on the right hand side we're in our develop module and I just want to get you excited about how easy this is going to be for you because it's all slider base it's all sliders drag the slider to the left to reduce drive the slider to the right to increase no matter what it is sharpening exposure brighten your shadows dark and your highlights doesn't matter it's all sliders so how happy is that? Their precious few sliders and photoshopped so it's going to be easier and again since you now understand how light room is doing what it does and so far as your pictures are not in the catalog physically that it's a database with an individual record for individual pictures this is keeping track of everything you do in text so you can always get out of what you've done so happy cider slider sliders appear you've got a nice history in which is just a visual representation of the data that your camera captured we're going to talk a lot more about this stuff and I want to give you just a little bit of the overview so you're excited about it in the developed module we've got a set of tools at pier so we've got a crop tool we've got a spot removal tool you can set that tool that either clone which is a straight coffee or to hell which is a copy in a little bit of a bowline you can click with it and knew in light room five you can click and drag with it which means what we can delete power lines in light room now we can fix under eyes baggies in light room we've also got a red eye tool with today's cameras and good exposure will never use that but anyway it's theirs in case we've got a graduated filter which is gonna let us fix sky so we can apply exposure changes that fade across the image and we can control the angle of the positioning on that. We've got a new and light room five is a radial filter, which is really a circular grady in't filter. So think about that. If you want to accentuate part of the image where you can make exposer changes to certain parts of the image, maybe brighten up this area, do edge vignettes. I was fabulous, and then we've got an adjustments brush over here in the adjustments brush and light room five is outrageously powerful because we can apply almost any of the different settings that we see here. White balance, temperature of the lights were simon, color of light. Here we can control that selectively with a brush by painting it onto our images. We can control exposure, which you can think about as brightness. We can control contrast which you think about as not really sharpening, but almost so what light room will do is go in and look for the edges and your image. So areas of high contrast and it'll make the light parts a little bit lighter in the dark parts a little bit darker to make. To give your image a little bit more depth, we can lighten our highlights or darken our highlights? We can lighten her dark and just our shadows. We can change what light room thinks white or black should be. We can add clarity, which is, you can think of contrast in the mid tones looks a little bit like sharpening. We can add a vibrant a boost to make our colors pop without screwing up skin tone so that we come out with alien hot pink skin, which generally, bad idea let's on halloween saturation. So all of these controls can you imagine loading up a paintbrush with as many or as few of those as you want in painting those individual things, or a grouping of those things onto the photo in specific areas where you want those changes, tio to apply? I mean, it's really amazing, and here in light room, you're not gonna have to worry about creating layer masks. You couldn't even give a care what a layer mask is, because light room is handling all of the heavy lifting in the background. You don't ever see that stuff unless you want teo, so we're going to be able to paint on things so we can do something to part of the photo that we don't get to the other part of the photo, all of that with e adjustments, brush, and we've got tools and gobs of other things that we can mess with here in the developed module I just want to touch on a little bit in the detail panel here we're going to talk a lot more about this tomorrow light room has some of the best noise reduction technology that exists right now so if you're shooting in low light or if you had a shooting with higher eso setting which is your camera sensitivity to light been you can fix some of the spec ling that you can get in those situations all right here in my room through the question uh just one five had different brush shapes or is it just a circle? Great question they're just round this fashion show yeah yeah over in photo shop you can load up your brushes with different tips I can't really do that light room but you can control how soft the brushes so if you're doing something that you want to have a soft transition let's say your lightning part of an area and you want you don't want that to be obvious that you've lightened it then you would set the softness of the brush so that it blends in nicely with surrounding pixels so again all this is just to get you excited about the kinds of things you can do and like we said earlier you can add all manner of ej affects all manner of edge effects you can and all kinds of vignette ing in light room calls that post crop vignette ing I wish you could go in there and edit those labels soft edge what color would you like a post crop in getting all that really means is that if you cross the image then light ramallah just that been yearning according to your crop you know, so like if you had a nice soft, dark and edgy and you crossed the image where you wouldn't want to get rid of the soft, dark image over there, so post crop means that light room is going to apply that edge after you've cropped and it doesn't matter if you set that setting and then go back and crop your image my room will still adjust it for whatever the crop is and then that's another great thing you know until photoshopped cc we really didn't have nondestructive cropping and still not instructive cropping and photo shop is a little bit difficult to get out it's not obvious how how to get the edges of your image back by any means that's why I do so well with my foot training because the program is so difficult but here in light room it's just not that way at all so it's just absolutely fabulous you can see immediately howto undo a crop it's just obvious so that is just to get excited about this program is going to be easy for you to use now I'm gonna go back to the library module and show you a couple of the other modules here, so you can set any of these panels to collapse or open automatically, so you've got a lot of control over how your workspace looks. You can also set up light room to use two monitors, and you can customize so what you're seeing on each one and sink them so that let's say you're zoomed into a photo and you're moving around in this one window than what you're seeing on your other monitor. And the other light room window that you set up is happening at the same time, so you're in the same place in your photo just really amazing the map module here, let she set up location data for your images, and if you're shooting with a camera that has a gps enabled or geo tagging, then you will be in to see pins and points all over this map of where those photos were taken. If you if your camera does not have that capability than you can add that data manually, if that's important to you let's, say your travel photographer and I need to quickly get to you and you don't want to set up albums or collections for all the different locations. Let's say you're shooting over in italy and then you can you could use this map module to quickly go to specific locations without having to go in and either keyword or you know hunt for those pictures all by yourself the book module is absolutely amazing so here's ah book that we're going to create we're actually here is a book that we're going to create together maui sunset so there's our there's our book right there all laid out we can zoom in and see individual pages where we can change the zoom level of the image not a whole lot of repositioning opportunities in the book module the templates really are kind of set in stone but we're going to cover some shortcuts and some little work around so that you can customize it a little bit more so the book module is really just fantastic and the slice of module so here's where we can create our slide shoes and as you can see over here on the right hand side what have we got to deal with sliders people these are all little customization options that we can add to our slide shows we can add a beginning and ending title that's how we had that my girls show up in the middle of the screen photo lisa then it faded out I'm not setting those fades fine we was doing all of that easy easy easy easy easy and we can handle audio in our side shows as well we've also got a print module here. Look at this picture packages. How handy is that? You know what the picture packages used to get when you were in grade school or high school? You know the little and the different sizes so in light room you can, uh, print several pictures on a single page in different sizes. You can set up all kinds of custom printing templates here in light room you could make contact sheets if you'd like for sending out to clients, you can even add your logo to them. You khun brand then we're going to be looking at all of that over on wednesday. But again, here you're beginning to see a little bit of a theme as I change modules then I have customization settings on the right that's it that's it so it's going to be very easy for you to get up to speed using this program it's just a joy to use because it makes sense over in the web gallery here again change modules we have customization settings right here on the right hand side we can enter our titles with an inner descriptions we can set the background, we can set the color of the stroke or outline on our images we can do all kinds of things and look at this right here upload settings light room will handle the uploading so you can put all of your ftp information right in here in light room so hopefully now you're beginning to think about how efficient this is going to make you so you're organizing your pictures you're fixing the exposure and then you've made an album out of them or a collection you can go straight to a website with that and if you put in all of your ftp information it is literally like a two or three click process click click click bam photos are on the web. Set up your print tip list you need to prince improves for clients click click click bam you're printer's firing off even if you don't want to print in that home yourself you can print to a j peg why would you want to do that? Well, you set up your own custom printing templates save that as a j pig light room called it printing to ajay pig and then you send that j peg to your online lab or your local lab or whomever is printing your images so this program is going to make you so fast you know even gonna believe so it's just a little overview of light rooms modules so we go back to the library again I said that the psd is if you open them from within light room, they're going to show up right beside your your original file. So that's. Very, very, very, very handy.

I am a photographer and photo teacher in the Greater Toronto Area. Along with my private clients I am often asked to teach photography classes to the larger photo clubs in the region. I've got a big three-night class coming up on LR in the spring so I thought I'd best check-in with Lesa to see if I was missing anything. LOL learned so much about little timesavers that I bought the course. :) This isn't my first Lightroom course either. Lesa is teaching exactly what the newcomer needs and offers tons of tips for pros. Lisa's explanation of how LR actually works is worth the price of the course alone if you're new to this fabulous database and editing program! As for Lesa she's a wonderful teacher and has a great way of explaining some of technical challenges we all run into when editing. If you're a pro, you'll recoup the price of the course when you edit your next big job.

Wonderful class! I had privately hired someone to teach me about Lightroom, but ultimately, I was unable to understand what Lightroom was capable of or how to navigate it. By the end of the first five sessions with Lesa, I knew I had finally found someone who was capable of teaching Lightroom in a clear and cohesive way. I am so thankful to CreativeLive and to Lesa for putting together instructional courses like this so that I can move forward with my passion for photography and use the tools that others have mastered. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
