Why Facebook Still Matters for Marketing

I want to start off with the question, how many of yours super frustrated with facebook lately? Yes, yes, everyone in the room. I know, I know there's a lot of stuff going on at facebook, a lot of changes, but I have to say after today's session, hopefully you will be feeling more excited, more hopeful and ready to get started with facebook and sort of bring it back as the one place that brings you a lot of really awesome, great quality, perfect traffic just for you. So let's, talk about a little bit about how facebook is changing. So here are some of the facts, so facebook isn't as effective for you as it once was. Fewer people are seeing your post how many of you feel that way and couldn't relate to that? Yes, I know for me personally, I have almost ten thousand fans on my facebook page, and every time I post something sometimes as little as thirty, people see it, which is crazy, right? I've worked so hard to build up my facebook page, I know people are not seeing my posts now. The o...

ther thing that might be frustrating to some of you is that facebook is constantly changing, they're changing their look, their algorithm, they're pretty much everything and as a small business owner, it's kind of hard to stay on top of all of those changes because just when you think you've mastered something and you get this part of it, something else over here changes and it's time to learn something new again, so I know it is really frustrating, and lastly, you kind of have to start paying to play, so to speak, so I know a lot of you have heard about the organic reach, which we're going to talk about in just a few minutes and there's facebook ads, they're everywhere a lot of people are jumping in and doing facebook ads, so you sort of feel like you have to keep up with them and invest in facebook ads as well. So today we're going to talk about why you should invest in facebook ads, but how to do that effectively, so you're not spending a lot of money on it. So let's, look at my personal facebook reach on my facebook page at launch grow joy so this was in the first week off two thousand thirteen and you'll see that my average reach was around twenty seven percent, which was pretty good it was pretty typical at that time, so not everyone was seeing my post about twenty seven percent, but it ranged anywhere from fifteen to almost forty percent so that's a pretty good number of people that are seeing my post now let's move ahead to two thousand fourteen this is again the first week of two thousand fourteen my reach wass eight and a half percent on average and I know some of you or probably all of you have had the same experience with facebook now let's fast forward to two thousand fifteen it went down even more so now my average reach it's four point eight percent this was back in january and let's look today this was the week before this workshop my average reach is one point four percent and these are numbers that I'm not making up I literally took it from my facebook page figured out my percentages and I'm pretty sure all of you if you were to go to your own facebook account this is what you would see as well so it's really frustrating especially because some of us are paying maybe paying someone tio manage our facebook page or we're spending a lot of our own time creating post uploading and really managing and engaging with with our community so it is super super frustrating so this is a fact reach on facebook is inclining and some brands have even ended their facebook presence I know it's shocking and they're focusing on other social media networks but here are some more changes that you might not yet be aware of so the like box is going away so if you have this on your page you actually have to update it? I'm not sure if they said here. Oh, so june twenty third is the date when you will have to update your facebook like box. So it's, I kind of actually like the new one. I think it looks pretty nice. Um by you are going to have to be updating back yes, elizabeth, and your that's on your website that you're updating? Yes, exactly. So this is a little plug in that you put on your website to get people to like your facebook page from your wife's side. Yes, another change is that facebook newsfeed re prioritizes you're really friends above pages, which is awesome because a lot of us are going on facebook to interact with our friends and to chat with them. And if you remember, in the last few months, we've spin saying a lot of facebook ads and stuff from pages rather than our friends. I know. So sometimes for me, I have even freed ahead that I have some of my facebook print that I used to see there feet all the time, and then all of a sudden they disappeared. But now facebook is bringing that back, which means that it's even harder to get seen if you have a facebook page because they're re prioritizing to show your friends feed which is great for some way for some reasons, but as a business owner it might not necessarily be so great, but this change has come as well. Another change, which I think is really great, is that facebook loves video, so they're trying to get all of us to have facebook as the main platform where we are uploading or video some. Now you can upload your video directly to facebook and embed that instead of maybe uploading to youtube or another platform you could embed at dubai, clean your website and in other places, which I think is great for all of us who do video and are using facebook for video as well. Another change is that if you comment on a story you might have seen some blocks have facebook as their comments platform. If you comment on that now, it'll automatically show up in your facebook feed before you had to click a little button if you wanted it to show up in facebook now, I think it's automatically going to shop in facebook, so there is a lot of value. They are trying to work with businesses to get visibility for businesses as well. The other change is that they are, or they have shifted a little bit the way they do ads, and we're going to talk about facebook ads. And our second segment of the day but they are changing how you are defining you're targeting your bidding and all of that so we're going to go through all of that and despite all of those changes, facebook really still does matter and let's talk about why obviously we all know this facebook has a huge reach now one and seven people in the world is on facebook that is insane, right? No other social site has this kind of reach so it's still pretty relevant if we want to be seen with our business is we still have to be on facebook we just have to tweak our strategies a little bit people are spending a lot and I mean a lot of time on facebook how many of you spent time on facebook every single day? Yes, almost all of you have said yes and it's true on average people spend two hundred forty three hours of their time on facebook that's crazy right? But as a marketer men as a small business owner that's great because you can be exactly in front of the right audience in front of who you need to be and target them directly, which is why I think facebook ads is still a great thing to be investing in now online people are also spending one out of eight of their minutes online on facebook I know for me personally sometimes I'll be doing my thing I'll be working and then all of a sudden I'll remember something and go to facebook so I know a lot of you are nodding your head yes, we constantly go back to facebook to check something to propose something to share and people are doing that as well. The other reason my facebook matters is because you could get really super targeted with your ads and we're going to talk about how to do that later today but there is no other platform that lets you get so targeted with your ads if you want jewelry designers if you want to target them you got it if you want to target moms who are fifty years old, you got it you can do that if you want to target people that are in college, you couldn't do that with facebook ads and they make it super easy with the click of a button you can really target anyone you want and that's pretty powerful I think so. Facebook is here to say as frustrated as we all are with facebook and the declining reached the one point four percent of people that are seeing your post unfortunately facebook is here to stay and we have to embrace it if we want to grow our businesses we have to be okay with all of the changes and being an entrepreneur is all about changing too so this is sort of nothing new to all of you.
