Sync Box

We also want to connect now are two computers so that the two computers are actually working together as one unit so the settings here are going to get transferred to the cloud service and the cloud services going to transfer them to the laptop and if I do something on the laptop then I can transfer it back to the desktop through the cloud service and that's we're going to talk about right now so we're gonna talk about the sink box but before we talk about the sink barks let's talk about creative clouds part of the sink box so creative cloud helps to tonight I kind of wish they had done this to light room but they haven't yet and unfortunately light room doesn't get as much attention for some reason as like photo shop and stuff like that it's like the you know they just don't get us much attention can I jump out with something? You know I want to think in that d in our chat room could you just made us aware of a post that came out of photoshopped world which I guess yesterday I know ad...

obe just announced that they're doing a brand new package with light room photoshopped twenty gigabytes of creative cloud file storage and to be hand site for nine bucks ninety nine month nine nine a month nine nine nine a month light room photoshopped twenty gigabytes of cloud file storage and behan site that I just wanted you to know that that just came to my attention. That's great. And I knew that's going to help. Nine dollars and ninety nine. Ten bucks a month. Bucks a month for you have total access to the latest photoshopped. Yep. And light room. Yes, and pretty much all you. Twenty gigs of storage, which is twenty. Yeah, good chunk. Right. So? So you can use that storage. So your creative, what cloud account? Looks like this. So when you go to your creative cloud account here's, all of your aps that you have access to and you can have access to all of them, or you can have access to just the two. So it's up to you, how many? I use a lot more than just the two on. So I have access. You can see there's some that I don't use, right? I have no use for some of these. I don't like edge code. I don't even know what it does but it's for programmers of some sort. But also, you have access to files so you can open the file holder. And basically, and I can show you here is, well, see adobe creative cloud files, you can see a bunch of files here that I am using for various purposes, right? So all of those files are things that I can give access to clients so that's great the creative cloud is fantastic but here's something amazing about the creative cloud in when it comes to sinking up your two systems if I got a photo shop this is how my photo shop looks in both my computer here and my computer at home. What happens if I change this though because you know how like is everybody pretty like picky about the weight where their file you get on someone else's photo shop and you're like what what is wrong with you? You know do you did your mother not raise you right? You know why would you put this over here? You know, and some people are like why would you ever have your tools over here? They should be over here right there I should you should have your all your tools right there like everybody has a very specific way of dealing with things but what happens when you decide that there's a better way of doing something or let's say I make a new set of brushes here say I make two or three new brushes what do I do? How do I get those transferred over or do I just have to transfer them over to the new system you know, on its own so here's what you do and I really don't want my I don't want that over there so put back over there. Okay? So here's what you do if you're on the creative cloud so this is a creative cloud service you can go to your photo shop and then your c hi my email address is actually plugged in there so my email address is plugged in and if I hit sink settings now it's taking everything that's currently set up here all of my presets it takes my brushes it takes the position of where I have stuff which actions I have all of that kind of stuff gets taken into consideration and it gets put onto the creative cloud then when I'm at home, if I want to pull those things down I go home and I go to that same area and hit sink settings now and it will pull all of that down. And if there's a conflict in a last meal say, hey, things have changed do you want to use what's on the cloud? Or do you want to use what's over here on your desktop and so I can pull them down? And so I can change an entire you know, position of something I can add presets aiken ad actions all of that stuff will get synchronized over between the two so I can have photoshopped acting the same in both places so that's a really useful tool and the same is true for in design, so if you use in design, you can synchronize in designs tool kit as well so in design and photoshopped both have synchronization now through the creative cloud. Now I wish that they would put light room in there where you khun synchronize light room but currently they don't sell, but who knows what will happen in the future now we're going to do sink who do tio inter sink box all right, so now I'm going to teach you the basic concepts of the sink box, so follow along closely, but if you've purchased the course, I also have a pdf right here that will also go through all the details on making the sink box so everything's listed out here just the way you should do it in very specific I'll be I'll be fairly general here because I don't want to like make people sleep, but the very specifics air here on this, but follow me along and you'll see so in the sink box page you'll see a link there's pc users and mac users and that you have to use two different programs to do this but you have to make which call it's called a symbolic link a symbolic link is just like a alias, but it somehow coded differently okay, so it acts the same is an alias, but it it's sze got something in it that allows it to be kind of back and forth instead of just kind of a one way it's different it's actually in two places but it's in one sounds like the trinity or something right in one in two places but really in one okay so what you're going to do is you're going to go to the sink bach of the link and I'm going to click on it and it is this link right here it's called and if you want to google it it's called a symbolic linker that's the name of the program symbolic linker two point oh it was made in june twentieth, two thousand eleven and it still works so you're going to download that sink uh that's symbolic link maker if you're on a pc it's called it's on a pc world article called synchronized any window folder on your pc with dropbox folder st dot html so anyway just google synchronizing any folder on you pc with the drop box folder and you'll come up with a pc world article on but it has a link to several options to make symbolic links um I'm again I'm not a pc user so I can't give you the lingo and I have no idea how to speak pc but if you follow that article it seems pretty simple and if you follow the concepts that I'm telling you you get it right okay, so that's where you're going to go to get this program and it's called symbolic winker if you double if you double click this symbolic link service thing it's going to add it to basically you're right clicking ability so when I right click something now at the very bottom in the services there's something called make a symbolic link see that so that's inside of your your services attached to your computer when you right click something so once you've installed that I'm gonna object that now we need to do something really, really important and that is we need to copy anything that we're going to make a symbolic link for we need to make a duplicate to make sure we don't screw it up because if we screw it up we don't want to lose everything ok so the first thing that we're going to do is we're going to go to the light room folder where we would normally get our information so again we talked about this earlier but we go to the light room catalog preferences and we go into the preset area and we show the light room precept folder when I click on that it shows me where that folder exists now right now it's actually showing it inside of my dropbox why? Because I've made a symbolic link and so the actual link that's inside of my light room fuller is not the rial one it's the symbolic clink the rial one is inside my dropbox right? Okay so notice it's connected this one this is c it's in the drop box in what's called a sink a software sink that's what I've made a folder inside of my dropbox called software sink and then it ends up in light room then if you look here where the normal light room folder would be it's in library applications support adobe and then there's a light room but notice it's got that little see that marijuana that's the symbolic link so that's the way it's going to look when you start but I'm going to show you how to do it from the beginning came so we're going to actually copy this stuff and I'm gonna put it on my desktop so I am just posted everything and you need to do this to you go to your light room folder and copy it and then paste it on your desktop so go to your light room folder and highlight both your light room and your camera off you're going to if you're going to do this to cameras well you need to copy that as well but let's just let's just do it to light room so that we don't confuse people and we're just going to copy the light room folder then we're going to go to our desktop and we're going toe paste that light room folders so that we have all of the stuff that we need on our folder and can't copy that journey is it copying the entire folder? Just an alias of well, that just copied an alias because if you copy a symbolic clean okay, you end up with an alias so it's important to recognize the that you can't copy an alias it's going to copy the alias it's not gonna copy the original thing. So let me give me one second to reset this so that we get this the right way. But the important thing is that we're going to have a we're going to make sure that we don't we always want a duplicate of everything. And so when I go to my software, I actually have a copy right here. See that? See these air these air extra copies there just like my own little copies. They're they're a backup copy. So I'm gonna copy those so that I can do this without fear of deleting something. All right? So let's quit light room and closed down some of these folders so that we're not so confused as to where we are. Okay, let me show you what happens when you go to application support. If I were to watch what happens if I do this, I goto adobe applications support this is where your light room folder is and let's just say I delete that so I've deleted my light room folder when I start light room watched there's no light room folder here at all inside of light room if I goto light room and I start up light room, you'll notice that it look it just it just made that light room folder see that I deleted that it just made it and it made it and put what would normally be like the the typical white room stuff in it not everything but just the typical light room stuff okay, so now if we go to light room that's got it it's light room knows that if there's no light room folder in its application support area, it'll make a new one and it will fill it with whatever it wants to fill it with. Okay? All right, so if I then want to make a sink box for that, then I need to take that light room and copy it so whatever it is that you have in lighter and you need to copy it and then paste it just as I've done here so that I have a duplicate copy so that if I screw this up I don't it doesn't ruin me kind so I have several files that I have to open all at the same time ok? So the first thing that I need to d'oh is I need to make a folder on my dropbox folder called sync or software sink and we're going to make a new one so you can see what I'm doing here and I'm going to call this software sync to so I've made a software sink box okay that's where all of my sinking stuff is going to go. So now I have two folders that I'm paying attention to. I have the first folder, which is my actual white room folder tear and then I have the sink box where that information is going to go kind. So I'm gonna have I have both of these now available to me all right? So here's light room folder and here's where I want something to sink so the idea and let me go back to our schematic here, the ideas that we want the settings to then go to the cloud and rest on the cloud and then we want this computer to look at the cloud and draw them down. And then if I change something here, then we want this to go up to the cloud up here and we want this to look up here and see that there's something different in the cloud and pull it down. The idea really is that we want the cloud kind of be the actual place where all of this exists and then the two computers down here both have little symbolic links that air looking up to that cloud and that cloud is getting updated based on dropbox is that we know how dropbox works it's a cloud here and then there's residents saw a resident files here and here on your computers and so the cloud keeps telling it to update these files so if you put something on the cloud that it pushes it down to the computers if you put something the computers that pushes it up to the cloud so the cloud is constantly so if I put something on this computer it throws on the cloud and then the clouds says hey there's something new and throws it on here right so I add something here all set on this computer I get a message that says hey something being out of the cloud I'm adding it to here and so it's constantly looking to the cloud as the where the truth is right that's where the truth is and then it's trying to copy that if you add something here throws it up here that's the truth pulls it down there change it here it does it that way so if we can make all of our c r settings up in the cloud and then tell these two drop boxes to be the place the light room is looking that would be great but the problem is his light room forces you remember the discussion we had this morning was light room chooses the place for the light one folder you're dropbox chooses the place for the drop box they're incompatible right which is why we need the symbolic link so what you're really trying to do is you're trying to take that light room folder and make a symbolic link to it inside of the drop box and if you make a symbolic link from this folder from the light room folder to the drop box they are one in the same it's the same folder it's just that this folder is represented that the lightened folder is represented in the drop box so anything you do here is automatically happening the drop box and then anything that happens the drop box does what goes up to the cloud and events cloud goes down to this dropbox and anything that's in this dropbox is symbolically linked to the light room folders so now they're connected so now anything that you change in your lighter and folder will be changed all the way across so let's watch how that happens and I'm going to jump out with a quick question that's awesome first of all that's number one on dh then jim and virginia is asking about this workflow potentially is not just specific to light room you could actually set this up with this workflow for even in design or for photo shop or for any software is you're teaching us don't create a virtual link from our computer to drop box for sinking right now and pretty much with anything I teach, I try not to be so centric into a program. It's. If you understand the philosophy or the the concept of workflow and efficiency, it applies everywhere. And so this doesn't. I have to just be part of what you do in light room. It can be done anywhere you need something specific done where you can't move the folder, you can do this so there's a lot of places this is could apply. It can apply in almost every type of program that has a preset or a, uh, you know, it can apply, and nick software can apply. And I mean, every every software has some little thing in it that look it look. Every time it opens, it looks at it to see what's what, what it's settings are or whatever, and it could be applied.
