Color to Black and White

Now let's, get into some cool color effects, and then we're going to pop into the healing brushes and that's how we're going to in the days going to fabulous now that we're through with some of that kind of retouching let's, take a look at how to use adjustment layers to drop the color from our image. Ok it's actually one of our beautiful framed images in the country studio so here's our before and here's our after can gonna go ahead and collapse this panel so all we're looking at is our layers panel, so go ahead and delete the layer that I made for you by pressing the delete key. So the first step in this technique is to go down to that half black, half white circle with the bottom of the layers panel and let's take a peek at the different options we have for creating a black and white image. We have a black and white adjustment layer that's one way of doing it black and one adjustment layer was nude photo shop cs three so if you're in and see us too, you will not see this, but my fav...

orite way to make a black and white image from a color is using the grady it map adjustment layer ok shouldn't go ahead and choose grady it map and if your color chips were black and white before you activated that adjustment layer, your image will immediately go black and white. Why is that that's? Because photo shop is applying ingredient to your photo in a grade ian is a soft fay from one color to another if you choose black and why as your grady it colors photo shop is going to take the shadows in your image and it's going to map those tow one color in your radiant and it's going to take the highlights in your image and it's going to math those to the other color in your grady. So if you're radiant colors are black and white, you end up with a beautiful high contrast black and white image in about an instant that was pretty fast, so if all you want is a beautiful black and white from a color image, you're finished with this technique. Ok, so let's, take a look at nice, okay, so we have our in studio guests here got the reverse effect. What she is looking at is this, which is arguably a bit disturbing how you change that's a wonderful question I'm going to go ahead and turn off the reverse. What happened was that she had why it is her four grand colored ship in black is her background colored ship when she created the grady and map adjustment layer so it doesn't really matter what your color chips are but that is what the grady and map adjustment layer will look at when you first create it, however, don't panic don't panic assumes you create the greening map adjustment layer, the adjustments panel is going to open and you get a nice big preview of the grady that the program is actually using at this moment. If you give it a single click, then you're going to open the grady in't editor in the third pre set in that list, we'll always, always, always be a black to white radiant, so just give that pre set a single click and you will have your black and white image if you haven't turned on reverse. I turned it on this to show you what we were looking at here in the studio, so once again, let me do that one more time if you think about it and here again, just like I forget to open my image is a smart object, it just makes me human. I'm not perfect, I forget to check my color chips when I'm creating a grady map adjustment layer. Okay, so if you think about it, go ahead and press d for default and make sure that black is on top back black is your foreground color chip, and then when you go to create the grady math adjustment layer, you won't have any additional step but if you forget to do that it's no big deal all you have to do is click this area and then click that third preset which is always going to be a black white grainy in so you could create all kinds of wonderful color effects if you wanted using this technique let's say I had uh gosh, maybe a blue color as my foreground color chip now when I choose grady a man from the half black half white circle with the bottom of the layers panel I get a whole nother effect so there's no in to the the color combinations you can use with a great map adjustment layer just know that your shadow's they're going to be mapped toe one into the radiant and your highlights are going to be mapped to the other end of the grady it okay, so experiment with that if you want but she can always single click that grady and preview that opens for you automatically you don't have to go hunting for it it opens up emmons click that third preset and in my opinion this produces the highest contrast black and white of any other method and photoshopped of creating a black and white it's a really, really beautiful effect ok someone throw away the second layer that I made now let's take a look since we got a layer mask in here what would happen if we were to grab the grady and tool from the tools panel and use our grady in't preset picker in the options bar again set to a black so white radiant? If we come over here to our image now, we're going to be painting in the layer mask. And if black conceals and white reveals, if we apply a black to white grady in't inside of that mask, we can create a a faded color to black and my image it's a really beautiful artistic effect and just like only reason the grady and tool to make collages a couple of days ago, you can keep clicking and dragging with that grady and tool in any direction and keep experimenting until you get the look that you want it's an absolutely beautiful affect, the farther you drag with the grady a tool, the more subtle and the wider than transition between the black and white image in the color becomes okay, so an incredibly fun technique I'm gonna close that and do it again on in different image. This is one of my favorite images. You cannot get any cuter than that. It is not possible to be any more keep so here's our original, go ahead and delete the layer that I created for you, so we're going to do the same thing again okay we're going to go down to the half black half white circle at the bottom of the layers pain will choose grady it man now we're going to a single click the grading it preview in the adjustments panel that opens automatically for you and then we're going to click that third preset which will always be a black to white radiant and that gives us a beautiful black mine image male with the mask still active I'm gonna grab my great aunt tool from the tolls panel you can just press g to activate it take a peek up at the grating it preset picker in the options bar and make sure that it's black to white and mind stays black to white because this is pretty much all I use the iranian tool for is collages and masking so go ahead and give it a click its go and give it a click and then choose that third preset if you click on the down reporting arrow if you click this part instead of this part then you get a little pop down menu and you can choose black to white from there okay but if you click in this part that grady it editor dialogue pops open now we're going to come over to our image your cursor turns into a crosshair and for this one you can pretty much start your click on the left side of his face and dragged to the right. And that will create nearly a dead center fade from color to black and mine really, really beautiful effect absolutely let it and again experiment the dragging in different directions for different links it's really amazing the different effects and this is this is truly taking a photo and turning it into a unique piece of art these kinds of effects right here so I'm gonna show you variation on that exact same technique so we keep on repeating it when I go back to that other image real quick and now I'm going to delete the layer that already made add a new grady in math adjustment layer just like I did before click this little preview click black and white now instead of using the grady and tool inside the mass to create the color to black and white fade I'm simply going to press b to grab the brush tool then I'm going to scratch an itch on my nose right here how many press x to flip fought my colored ship so that I'm painting with black because black does what black conceals fight reveals and if I conceal what's happening on this layer it's the equivalent of me taking a pair of scissors and cutting a hole through this black and white layer so you can see the color on the original photo underneath it hey so if I come over to her eyes and I paint with black on her eyes nothing is happening can anybody tell me why nothing is happening? See, I did yes that's exactly it see, I did this on purpose teeth nothing is happening because the last time I use the brush tool for the faux burn and dodge I lowered the opacity to ten percent see how the options that you change in options bar stay changed until you change them back so don't let that trip you up do as I say, not as I do. Okay, so now they're brushes that one hundred percent and we come back over to the iris of this lady's eye and we paint over just the iris we're going to create a beautiful partial color technique see her now her eyes or the only thing that's in color. Now I can bring back the color in her lips if I want it's so funny because when I do this technique inevitably somebody in the crowd thinks that I'm colorizing it though I'm not colorizing it, I'm hiding the black and why so you can see through to the color that lives on the layer underneath the black and white layer. Okay, so think of it just like your punch in the hole through one layer to see what's on the layer below the layer below is where the color lives so close that one and do it again on another image this time we're going to use a black and white adjustment layer we're going to get the same effect it's just a different way to do it okay, so here's our original image here's what we're going to create I go ahead and delete this layer this time from the half black half white circle at the bottom of the layers panel we're going to choose black and white immediately the color is going to drop out of your image and photo shop is going to open up these siri's of sliders in the adjustments panel if you're using uh cs three or see us for these may open up in a dialogue box instead of in the adjustments panel ok, so here you can actually use thes sliders to tweak the contrast manually in the photo. So if you like to tweak things like this, then the black and white adjustment layer might appeal to you more than the grady it math adjustment layer method you're going to get the same effect in my own personal opinion I think the grady and map adjustment layer makes a more beautiful black and white from the get go then the black and white adjustment layer however, as you saw with the great man, you don't get any of these sliders, so you have no way of fine tuning the contrast by hand, but you do with a black and white adjustment later, okay another cool thing that you can do with a black and white adjustment layer is turned on this tent check box right here so if I turn on the tent checkbox finish off automatically adds a brown overlay to my image and horny torti graphic designers will call that cps so I'm gonna go ahead and turn that off for the time being and let's say that I like the contrast in this I'm not going to tweak these sliders anymore there are some fun presets and here too in this poppet menu so do play around with those on your own when you go ahead and collapse this panel so you can see my later mask so here again I could either use the grady and tool toe at a black to white grading in the mass to give me a color to black and might fade or I can use the brush tool set to paint with black in anywhere that I paint across my color shows through from the layer underneath and once again the beauty of this technique because we're using layer masking if you mess up and add too much you know color back in it's more notice mama's face then you can simply press the ex key to flip flop your color ships and paint back over the area that you did not mean to paint across to begin with to bring back the grayscale ok so really really useful technique for partial color or color fades okay, we're gonna do that one more time on this image right here. This is a great technique to have in your bag of tricks if you are unable to correct the color in any other way any of the tricks that we used earlier in the day you know name ahmad shadows highlights empty adjustment later with blend modes, levels, curves what have you if you just cannot get the color to look right? But the subject matter is really good and the composition is really good take the color out of the equation, make a black and white out of it maybe add a color tent back to it okay, so here's our original and here's what we created so I'm gonna delete that so back down to the half black, half white circle at the bottom of the layers panel she's black and white I'm not going to mess with the the sliders on this one. What I'm going to show you, though, is another cool thing that lives in the black and white adjustments panel it's that same on image adjustment tool that we saw in the curves dialog box give that a click and instead of trying to figure out which one of these sliders to tweak to adjust your contrast, click the on image adjustment button mouse over to the part of the image that you want to change click and hold down your mouths but and you get that pointing hand with a leftward facing arrow in a rightward facing arrow drag it to the right toe lighten those colors see how the plaid is coming out in his shirt first time I do this I didn't you know it was a plaid shirt I was like oh it's plaid shirt after eyes lightened it if you want a dark in that particular area dragged to the left so that's the on image adjustment tool in the black and white adjustment layer really powerful stuff here so now let's go ahead and add a color tint let's go ahead and click the checkbox and because a c p a or a brown or relay is the most popular color overlay to date that is what you get when you click that button however you're not stuck with it by any means if you want to change the color all you do is click the little color swatch to the right of the tent checkbox give it a single click color picker were open you can use it just like we've been using it all week I really love adding a slight blue tint to my photos I love the way it looks is just a personal thing so I'm gonna go ahead and click within the blue range of colors and then I wanna lighten the blue a little bit by clicking up here and go ahead and press ok and there's my image so here's our before and here's our after really beautiful and easy and nondestructive another cool thing to do with that even if you hadn't added a color tent but we're just dealing with maybe a great map adjustment layer or a black and white adjustment layer drop the opacity now you get a little bit of the color coming back through but not enough of it for anybody to notice that the colors are a little bit off if you weren't able to correct them in any other way hey so open that one back up and that's the beauty of this say this is a psd if you print it you give it to the client there like you're not so much on that then you can pop this back open double click the thumbnail of the adjustment layer in your adjustments are still there and you can continue to find tune them so I'll take the color ten off just to show you um the difference between a full on black and why and maybe a subtle black and white so I'm gonna drop the opacity of this layer just a little bit so I've got a little bit of the color coming through but not a whole lot mostly black and white so that's another variations on the same technique ok, I'm going to show you one more color thing and then we're going to jump into the healing tools for the rest of the day, so here's an image that I cannot get the color, so look as good as I wanted to look, so I'm gonna take the color out of the equation, so the first thing we're going to do to create a duo tomb is due tone is black, plus another color. A tri tone would be black, plus two other colors. A quiet tone would be black, plus three other colors in what very, very few people know is that adobe spit boo hoo dollars tio these amazing color scientists that developed hundreds and hundreds of d'oh tone, tri tone and quad tone presets that are built into the program, but she would never know that they're there. You will not believe how beautiful these color combinations are, so I want to show you how to access them. What we're going to do is add a great map adjustment layer because the first step in this is to lose the color, so we're going toe click the half black, half white circle she's great at math or black and white adjustment layer either one will work the same. I like grady it man so I'm going to choose that I'm gonna go ahead and single click the preview and then click the black and white grady and so that I get a black and white photo now that I have a black and white photo, I need to change the color mode that this document is in because to get to the duo tone presets you have to create a true grayscale image right now we don't have a true grayscale image okay? We have an image that looks like it's gray scale but there's still color in there. If you were to send this to printer, it would print out the red channel the green table in the blue channel and merge them together it was still it black and white but there still is there is the information in there for the color channels, so we're going to go up to the image menu and choose mode and choose grayscale see because dio tone is great out, we can go straight to do a tone mode to get at those wonderful amazing color combinations that the scientist made that are buried and photoshopped we have to first get a grey scale and when you do that photo shop is going to ask you some scary questions it's going to say gotta flatten image oh my gosh what's going on take a deep breath and click flatten photo shop is going to give you another very scary missions that says you're asking me to throw away the color are you out of your mind still yourself and click discard all right so now we're dealing with a true grayscale invention to prove it I'll pop into my channels panel ain't no color channels in there anymore we are dealing with grayscale now we can go back up to the image menu choose mode and now dio tone is an option so we're going to go ahead and click deal tone and here's where all the magic lives in the pre set menu get ready come in it pull this dialogue down and hopefully that many will pop up on top so you can see it you ready for all these presets yeah baby this is arguably were seventy nine dollars this one tip I kid you not you will in all seriousness you will not believe the beautiful color combinations that you're going to get with some of these presets and again it's an experimentation thing so just start going down the list came to skew this over so we can see this is our image as a do a tone with orange as a color would you ever even have thought to add orange to your image look how beautiful that is all of a sudden the clouds stand out everything looks bright and sharp unbelievable so you can just keep cruz and through here and looking at all these different process to see what they do to your image what black and purple would you even have guessed? So the great thing about this box is that as you go down those list of hundreds and hundreds of presets it flip flops between do atone tri tone claude tone okay, so it changes this menu automatically according to the priest said that you've picked would you have ever thought to add olive green and orange to your image? Of course she wouldn't have that's why these color scientists got big big bucks to make all these beautiful color combinations for you but so a few people know that they're in the program a look at this one this one is four colors if you were to look at that image framed on a wall you would think it was a black and why but it's got you would notice that it's in awfully beautiful black and white because it has extra death in it that's coming from the fact that it's not a black and white at all it's composed of black and why plus gray plus pink plus green for the love of thor so you can just keep playing with all these different presets and you can come up with some amazing imagery now once you find something that you like let's say we like this one look at this black magenta and yellow who knew let's say we like this one click ok do you have to stay and do a tone mode heck no go back into the image menu choose mode rgb poof were back in color land continue editing your image however you would like okay so we simply went into grayscale mode for the sheer ability to turn on dio tone mode we went into a tone mode on ly to get at those amazing color presets and then you can pop right back out of dio tone mode when you find the precept that you like incredibly incredibly powerful stuff here okay course everyone on the internet is hoping you're going to do that one more time yeah we're going t o and it looks like we're going to need to start with the healing tools in the morning oh that's the majority did all right let's open it one more image was played with that a bit more ok so the first step is to create your black and white and the reason you want to take control of that is because if you go straight to grayscale mode photo shop is going to produce the lame ist lowest contrast criticize looking black and white known to the human race hey it simply cannot be trusted to create a high contrast black and white for you so I'm gonna press commander control zito undue so that's why you want to take charge of the black and white part so again click the half black half white circle at the bottom of the layers panel choose either grady at map or black and white it does not matter which one use one or the other I happen to like grady at map best so I'm gonna choose grady it map then single click the grady it matt preview when the grady editor opens, go ahead and click the black and white preset and click ok now we have a really nice high contrast black and white the other one looked really, really flat on one that photoshopped created for us now since we have controlled the conversion from colored black and client were ready to pop in the gray scale mode so now we can go back to the image menu choose mode grayscale because see we cannot get to do a tone while their color channels in your image you simply cannot do it so go ahead and choose grayscale you're going to get those scary messages again smile and link it photo shopped tell it you're not scared click flatten click discard it's really empowering flattened discard now you're in trou grayscale ville there no color channels left in your document I'm just popping into the channels panel so you to prove that we don't have any color left going on so now we're going to go back to the image menu choose mode now we can choose dude tone as soon as you click that this wonderful dialog box is gonna open with all of these amazing presets, look at that was you've ever believed that the image could look that good with yellow attitude? So we've talked a little bit about photo shot world there's, an expo hall component to that show and inevitably there's a couple of printers. They're usually epson has a nice big booth, and they have a lot of the famous photographers prince printed it really large size, framed and hanging on the sides of their booth to show off what their printers khun do and also the photographers that they sponsor. A lot of those images are printed in what looks like black and white, but let me tell you, they're not black and white, they're black with another shade of gray added on top of it, or a slight hint of blue if you were to get into it, you'll find that they have been created using one of these presets because it adds extra richness and depth to your photo. People won't be able to tell that it's not really a black and white, they may not know why that photo looks so good build us know that they get sucked into it, okay, so all kinds of beautiful, amazing things that you can make happen. With these presets and each one of them is just a little bit different I mean, it is stunning the colors that you can come up with and here and again in my opinion there's no better way to save an image that just cannot be color corrected in any other way then a technique like this you take the color out of the equation look at that one it's just amazing black, gray, brown and green yes, sir. Is there a modifier key that you can use to do to kind of scroll through them all through there? You know, in the in the blend mode panel I think it's is it command? I honestly don't know the keyboard shortcut it would be really great if there was one there may be may be the great interwebs no, but I don't know if going to cycle through there, but that would be really nice. Yes, um I just noticed it when my files opened by default the raw files there in sixteen bit and I was going back and forth trying to do this on an image and it didn't work and when I had to change it to a pit so just to make note of that yeah, so if you're shooting in raw and he brought the image into photo shop and is still a sixteen bit image, which means it contains more color in your average day peg when you capture with your camera then when you try to do some of these things you may get a air message that says oh what we can't do that I was sixteen then image would you like to change it to a bit go ahead and say ok if that happens to you so all kinds of beautiful fix that you can create with these do atone presets and do take advantage of that's part of the purchase price of photo shop people there's a reason why that program is eight hundred dad gum dollars hey there's a bunch of stuff built into like that yes sir back into the rgb after we finish with the duo tones why would you take it back and rgb if you want to print it on your color printer because there may be some or editing that you need to dior sharpening what heavy you can't do a whole lot in this color mode okay so that's why I would switch back toe rgb yes what does over print colors mean in the options for do it what does over print colors mean there's this fabulous book that I could look it up in and it's right there you can let me say I'll go back to well then do swim back in d'hotel mode and I could bring up that dialogue again if you want to adjust how much ink is being laid down with some of these color you can create your own color combinations you can single click on any of these swatches to bring up the color picker and you can can you confined to an and create your own presets for this as well over print has to do with the printing process. Yeah, so that's doing tones folks so tomorrow when we get started we're going to start right in on the healing brushes we're going to look at how to use the spot hailing brush non destructively as well as the regular healing brush we're gonna knock the bags off of this guy get rid of some of his malls in his piercing ok, so we're going to start in with that first thing in the morning we're gonna learn howto this image great, we're going to learn how to reduce the bags underneath eyes in a subtle manner because you don't want to make him go away completely because everybody has them and we're also going to take a look at the spot healing brush comptel why this little girl is unhappy I'd be unhappy too, and we're also going to take a look at the spot hailing brushes, new content aware phil command so we'll start on those healing tools first thing in the morning we've got one minute do we have any questions on this do a tone or any of the partial color techniques we have a ton of questions, but seeing as it's four o'clock would see if there's any anyone in the audience, how are you going to ask a couple just any good couple there of question from jules is one is doing town available in, um finish up elements nine that's a fabulous question honestly don't think a woman has to do a tone mode because it it really only has one color mode, which is rgb. You can't even work and seemed like a mode in in elements, which is a mode that you would need to work in if you're sending your piece is off to a printing press, okay, so no, I don't think elements has do it'll mode question from both that heller l and phil crayon I was. What does the dither do? And please explain dither with the grady and map that's from the honestly don't know. I have to look it up in this fabulous book that I know.
