Using Text in Photoshop

So now let's go ahead and jump into our day four files and we're going to start out by showing you some text formatting features that you might never know we're in the program. Okay, so I'm gonna open up a few images here, okay? If you've ever created text with photo shop, you may have noticed that it is perfectly happy to let your text dangle off the side of the document. For example, I'm gonna turn off the text layer that I've created and we're going to create our very first text layer in the class. Somebody come over here to the tools panel impressed the big t t for type or tea for text so you can create text that runs horizontally or text that runs vertically text that runs vertically is notoriously difficult to read, so I don't ever use this tool. Okay, so we're gonna be using the horrors a horizontal type tool once you choose the type tool, you're going to see all kinds of options in the options bar, so you've got fund family you've got fun style in front styles where you're gonn...

a have all your bold italic seem able black versions of the fun if that font family happens to contain those versions over here, you've got your size field okay, so you can highlight this field and type in another size to make your text larger, smaller or as you can see if you have or your cursor next to the the fields text label it turns into that screaming cursor like we've been using in the opacity control top with layers panel so that's handy so you can drag to the left to decrease size or dragged to the right to increase size this menu right here is for your anti alias ing you definitely want to keep that turned on it's just going to smooth the edges of your type if you don't have this man you turned on your type is gonna look unbelievably jagged and the program and you won't be able to figure out why the heck that is happening I'm also the advanced photo shopped professor and an online design school called sessions dot edu and for about a week there I had these students submitting this text and it was just completely jagged and I couldn't understand what on earth was happening it finally dawned on me that somehow they had turned off anti alias ing on their text tool and still no matter what find they use no matter what they did their text was jagged he like it was made out of legos so do keep this menu turned on by you smooth so you can experiment with the different looks of these it's just more or less smoothing around the edges of your letters okay but you definitely want to keep that turned on over here, you've got your alignment tools so you can left center and right alone in your text and photo shop and this little color swatch right here. If you click, it will open up the color picker, and that allows you to choose the color for your text. And if you want to create text that's curved, you can click this little guy right here and you can choose from a variety of curved or waving textiles thistle icon right here is a shortcut to get to your character panel so we've been using our layers panel, an adjustment panel throughout the week. Well, there's also a character panel, and it has a whole lot of other text formatting options that we're going to be looking at for just a few minutes here this morning. So that's a quick tour of what's in the air, his bar when you have the type or text tool active now, when you have that still active and you come over to your document, you don't have to worry about creating a new layer onto which your type is going toe sit because that happens automatically. So what you can do is click, and as soon as you click within your document, if you look over here in the layers panel photoshopped added another layer for me automatically I haven't even typed anything yet. Okay your text layers will always have a big tea in them so you know what's happening on that layer so now ever hear my document I've gotta flashing insertion point so I can type to see my text all right so let me name out so the only problem with this method is that as you can see photo shop is quite happy to let your text just go on to infinity and beyond over here okay so it's happy to let it dangle off the edges of the document now it's not that I sent a whole bunch of text and photo shop okay I usually set very little text but it can be handy teo use these tools because there's a lot of ways you can use text in conjunction with your photos and that's what we're gonna be talking about for the first portion of the day here but I just wanted to point out to you that if you want your text to rap to the next line you have to physically click where you want that rap toe happen impress return okay because finish out will just make it go on off the right side of your document to infinity okay able just keep on going over there unless she put in what's called a hard break or return so that's one thing that's good to know another thing good to know is that if you want your text to take up on ly a small space or a finite space, and you want the text wrapping that happen individually or automatically rather than you can create a text box in photo shop and there's probably about no, I don't know twenty other people on the planet that know that you can create a text box and photo shot. Okay, so I'm gonna turn off the layer that I made here and turn on my text box layer that I made for you, and if I double click the thumbnail of this text layer and come over here, you're going to see that I've got several lines of text going on and it's in the box. Okay, I thought when I double click that the little box would highlight, but that's ok let's, go ahead and create a box herself, so the trick to creating a text box of photo shop is too. Instead of just doing a single click and then typing, click and drag to draw box with the text tool ok, we're not using a rectangular marquee here. I have my text tool active over there in the tools panel, so instead of just single clicking in the document, you want to click and drag downward and diagonally to create a text box, and as soon as I released my mouse button, you're going to see my text box. So now you can start typing this time my text will wrap automatically to the next line smiley face so that is a handy trick okay so if you have to add text that needs to wrap you can absolutely do that in photo shop okay but you do need to click and drag diagonally to create a box instead of just clicking in your document that your first text tip so I'll close this one the next hit tip that I want to give you is I want to tell you something about letting ok letting is referring to the space in between lines of text okay so already shown me a moment ago how you can click to add a return to drop a line tio drop text to the next line you can also do that toe ad space I see people adding extra returns to add extra space between lines all the time but there's another way to do that and it's called letting so letting refers to the space in between the lines it actually comes from the name comes from the old type setting days where they actually used hunks of lead or strips of lead in between the type cases that were also made of lead and that's what made the space between the lines so that's where the term leading comes from so here I've got three different measurements of letting going on here this one over here is called this's solid leading so solid leading usually refers to a leading setting of the same size as your type size, so if your type size is twelve point solid, letting one also be twelve point ok and it's a fairly visually pleasing amount of space in between the lines now in photoshopped photo shop automatically has you're letting set to something called auto and auto as you can see here in the center example has more space between the lines okay, so I'm telling me all this to let you know that you can adjust it quite simply in the program and then over here on the right hand side I've added a lot more leading to this little quote I never think of the future it comes soon enough so let's take a look at how to adjust that once you have created some texts and you want to change it in any way you need tio highlight it just like you do in your word processor okay, you gotta tell photo shop what part you want to change so if we're going to change leading, we need to highlight all of it where we want to change it okay? So I can do that easily by double clicking the layer thumbnail that that type lives on case why just double clicked the tea over in the layers panel and photoshopped highlights my text with black highlights won't print, so don't worry about that it's not permanent it's just showing you that it's highlighted, just like in your word processor now they get to the leading control, you've got the type tool active you can click that little icon in the top right of your options bar to open the character panel so you can give that a click and the character panel will open, and this is what it looks like right here, we're not going to go through all these different settings. I'm just going to show you a few that I believe are the most practical in useful in the fairly small amounts a text that you're ever going to be creating and photoshopped photo shop is not the place to write your next novel, ok, very, very small blocks of text you're ok, but it is not aware processor okay? So here in the character panel, we have aa lot of the same settings that you have in the options bar doesn't make a difference where you change them in, you could use the options bar or the character panel, or vice versa at the top of the panel, we have our fun family menu, just like in the options bar, we also have our style, many that's where you're built ins built in bolding and italics will live. This will setting right here since the font size and again any of these text labels that you see next to a field if you hover over them, you get that same scrubbing cursor so I can click and drag to the right to increase font size or click and dragged to the left to decrease font size while my text is highlighted. Hey, you have to highlight it in order for it to change, you're letting control lives right here. And if you look at the icahn photo shop has given you hear in the character panel it's trying to show you what that setting is for. So it's got a little arrow next to the letter a and it's letting you know that you can wide in the space that each line sits on, okay, to adjust the leading so that's where that lives right here so you can either double click this setting in type and something else. If you happen to know what kind of letting you want, I never know what kind of letting I want. I'm a completely visual person. Hey, you can also click the downward pointing triangle in photo shop has given you some common letting values there, so you can use that if you'd like, let me see him back out. So I'm going to show you what I believe to be the best way to change letting and that's visually so what you're going to do is you're gonna double click the text layer icon so that it highlights everything that's on that text layer and we're going to use keyboard shortcuts we're going to press and hold down the command option keys on a mac or control ault on a pc to increase leading while you're holding those two keys down you're gonna use the up arrow key okay so see how the space between the lines is increasing as I'm pressing the up arrow key so you can think of it like that increase letting use the up arrow key decreased letting you is the down arrow key so if you've ever seen a design or the text to smash together like that that's how the designer is doing it they're decreasing, letting so that the letter characters are over laughing slightly it's a useful designed technique it's a bit of an unexpected things what tends to catch people's eye and that makes them read the copy of the ad ok, so again I'll end do that and go back to what we had before so you just want to find the text later that the type lives on that you want to fix doubleclick toe, highlight it and then hold down option command on a mac or control all on a pc and if you want to increase the amount of space between lines, did it just work in the opposite way? You all saw it here just a second ago. Work the opposite way and now it is doing it differently. Okay. All right, let's, try another type player. All right. So now father shop would apparently like us to press the town arrow key to increase lending. And to be honest with you that's what I expected it to do a second ago within it did and I thought, well, I must have had a flip flop in my head, but I think I was right the first time. Okay, so you're going to press the down arrow key to increase letting in the up arrow key to decrease letting, okay, so that can be a useful thing. Tarin photoshopped it since his fear, you know, it does. Ok, so now let's, look at another useful type feature and that's called turning and this one is actually me. Ok, so here we have the techs. And if you've downloaded any funds from the internet, you know, these hand writing casual script funds, as designers call them, are notoriously terribly spaced out. Okay, so I haven't done anything special to this text other than choose this font and what front was it? Handwriting dakota okay, so I'm just typed out this fun and look at how close look at the space difference between the letters ok there's a decent amount of space between the eight in the a the a and the v r touching each other the e is miles away from the v hey is just awful look at close the and I are together and then what there's the grand canyon in between the eye and the are okay so the space between letters is referred to his kern ing k might have heard that term thrown around before and look at this the ellipse is nearly a mile away from the are just crazy so sometimes with with using some of the less expensive or free funds you will get spacing problems like this and it makes it really, really hard to read your text and nothing points out a graphic design novice faster than bad letter spacing it's it's really a shame when you've got a really cool look an ad and I see this and magazines sometimes and I just don't understand how it's happening it's like there's no quality control there when you've got bad spacing like this the viewer it's almost like you you trip mentally it's difficult to read, then you start focusing on well why is the spacing so mr now you're not even paying attention to what's in the ad you're worried about space so I want to show you how to fix that because it really can't make your text look more professional even if you're just setting a single word on a photo okay, so this is called turning so what we're going to do is we're going to take this layer and we're going to turn it and it's gonna look like this see how you don't mentally stumble in that text it's all spaced out you don't even notice the space between the letters because it's not weird, okay? So that's what we're going to do I'll turner on current version back on and in your file if you've purchased the course and gotten the download files, I've even built in in the form of the layer name for you the keyboard shortcut so you couldn't remember your book, okay, so now what we're going to do is this time we don't have to highlight the area we're going to fix okay, we need to position our cursor in between the letters that have the problem so let's go over, go ahead and single click to activate the un hq earned layer and now we're going to position our cursor between the first problem area and you can see here again that I started out with a text box not just plain old horizontal tex so now that my insertion point is blinking in between the offending letters I'm gonna hold down the option key on america ault on a pc and you're going to press the right arrow key to increase space or the left arrow key to decrease space hey, and I'm actually going to make my text box a little bit larger if I can grab one of those corner handles here make it a little bit bigger so I've got room to work so option on america or halt on the pc and just keep tapping the arrow key to increase the space between those letters so I wind up the space between the a and the v now I'm gonna press my release my option or all key press the ride arrow key and now I want to scoot that e in closer to the v so I'm gonna hold option or ault again this time unimpressed the left arrow key see how it's just suggesting that space so very quickly you could come through here and your goal is to make the space between the letters as even as you can because different letters up against each other need different amounts of space oh, you know you can imagine a w up next to another character the w is going to need a bit more space than let's say in l a you know, a lower case l which is just a little stick figure there so option left arrow to decrease the space option right arrow to increase the space. Now, over here near the ellipse, I need to bring that in a lot because it's nearly a mile away from the letter. Now I can come down here to the eye on the s bring that in. And as you tweak the spacing between characters, it may also shift between other characters in that word. So look at this it's. Hard to even tell that that apostrophe and goes with the e in the ass because it's so far away from them and again, this is a real problem with fonts that you can download from the internet. Free fonts are really, really cheap funds. Not all of them, but it is a bigger problem with handwriting funds like this. Yes, way that you can, you know, measure this or is it totally just visual? It's a visual thing? Yeah. It's a visual thing. So that's, another good tip for you to help tighten up and clean up. Your text is to adjust the current ing and again, you've got the keyboard shortcut right here in your layers. Panel. Yes, when I started moving a letter over all of the text shifted over to the right and now I can't see it all in the textbook, right, okay, so since I started out with a text box, I'll just clicking here against you can see it I activated the type player clicked inside of it now you can see the little dotted lines around that means I started out with a text box bye clicking and dragging with my textile instead of just single clicking in the document so when you have a text box you can resize it and as you resize it will automatically rap the lines of text to the next line if you want so the way to resize it is to grab one of the handles okay and just pull it out see how it's changing as I'm changing the size of the box so that's one of the benefits to using a text box if you have a few lines of text to sit and you know they're going to need to rap to the next line you can create a box instead of a straight line and with the straight line you're going tohave toe create hard returns that even sir in order to drop them to the next line okay so if you want to resize a text box I'll click on another layer then you can just click on the layer that you need to effect and then click inside of it to get the little sizing handles and then you can drag those handles out center is that the hales khun b contrary and it won't let you grab them so it's being contrary now and if you can't grab them any other way, you can press and hold the command key or control on a mag and you will get re sizing handles it looked more like free transform now actually resize the whole text for you so they can be a little contrary to grab that if you keep clicking around, you can absolutely get him. Okay, so before we get a break here let's, take a look at another useful text for men. The feature that you might not know exist within photoshopped groups and that is something called tracking. So this word right here conference has a lot of space in between the letters that's not turning. Okay, so what I've done is I've widened the space in between all the letters uniformly at the same setting in order to space out the letters so that they take up more space and that's called tracking. Okay, so turning your adjusting the space between characters individually according to what those characters are and how why they are and how much space they need with tracking your adding or deleting space uniformly between all the letters in a word. Okay, so here what I wanted to do in this design is I wanted the word conference to take up the space between the descending part of the g and the end of the logo, which was the a okay, so I wanted it saying compass that little space right there so how did I do that with tracking you do need to highlight the word that you want to effect then we're going to go up to our options bar and we're gonna pop open the character panel just give it a single click and it'll open up and tracking is this guy right here? Okay, so it's got an a t v and it's got an arrow underneath it pointing both directions, letting you know that you can widen now or decrease the space in between the letters uniformly okay, so I'm gonna go ahead set this poppet menu back to zero, which is where it would have been normally okay, so now that we have the word that we want to affect activated here again in your layers panel of the exercise files, I've given you the keyboard shortcuts, so you remember it ok? So we're going to hold down the option key it's actually, the same keyboard shortcut is turning ok option on a mac or halt on the pc and if you want to increase the space between the letters, you're going toe tap the ride arrow key while you're holding down option or all and if you want to decrease the space between letters, see now how they're getting really close together then you're going to tap the left arrow key so this is a very useful design trick when you want to fill up a certain space ok and on the flip side of that if you've only got I find that amount of space for your text to fit in and you just can't quite get it to fit then you can reduce tracking a little bit and tighten left that word so that it will fit within the space that you needed to fit into so again to do that you just highlight the word that you want to effect hold on option or all press the left arrow key to reduce the space between the letters uniformly or the right arrow key to increase the space uniformly so that's another useful in yes you lock certain characters you can I think and er illustrator uh if the the tm mark did not go with your selection so when you change your tracking um you're pretty far away from that team thing. Now if you if you tried to kern the e and the trademark symbol you would then not be where you want to be on your on your graphic so just wondering if you can block those two together so that they move together can't really lockem what I did was I didn't I didn't activate the team in fact I think the team is on a whole nother layer down here it is it's not even on that same layer so that would be a way that you could lock it is to put put the piece that you didn't want to effect on a separate type player, which is what I did here. Yeah, so, yeah, I just only had the word conference on this layer and that's. The cool thing about these type players over here is that photoshopped names the layer according to what you tied, so that I didn't name the layer conference. It named the layer for me, according to what's, on that text layer, which is pretty cool. So, again, turning is a space between letters. Tracking is adding, you're deleting space uniformly between all the letters in a word.
