Wrapping Texture Around an Object

And now let's go down to using a displacement map to map one image to the curves and contours of another one and this is quite an end depth technique but we're going to do it a few times so I'm going to show you what we're going to create we're going to create these two images right here we're going to take a circuit board and map it to this crazy man's face and then we're going to take a circuit board and map it to this guy's body is a great advertising trick any time you want to really create surrealistic image that catches somebody's eye a displacement map is a great way to do it so this could communicate all kinds of ideas back pain due to too much computing there's no end to what kind of conceptual imagery you can create using this technique but let's take a peek at our layers painful here just so that we know what's going on here we've got just a regular old background layer but that could just as easily be a solid color feel layer right here that are whites coming from we've got...

our image of a guy with a shirt off here we leave and then at the top of our layers panel we have the circuit board image and we can see that it's masked so anywhere you see why is where that circuit board is visible on the image okay, so it's going closed these and open up the original images? I'm gonna start with istock circuit board and I stopped body open at both of those images, so the first thing we want to do is we want to create the displacement, math and unjust placement math is simply a grey scale image that photo shop uses toe warp and bend the other image to the curvature cz of this one okay, so our goal is to make this into a gray scale image. So remember when we used channels to create selections couple of days ago that's what we're going to do here as well, we're not going to actually create a selection, but what we're going to do is use that use channels should create a grey scale version of this image, so we want to take a spin through our channels and find out which channel he is the most high contrast in other words, the channel in which he is the darkest. So we're going to use their keyboard shortcuts and that is command three four five on a mac or control three, four, five on a pc and as you do that we're going to be viewing each channel ok, so here's, the red channel, the green channel and the blue channel okay? And just like always, the blue channel usually ends up having the most contrast so once we find the channel where he is the darkest, then you want to go over to the channel's panel ok, so my channels panel is already open a caddis need to click the tab to bring it to the forefront. If you don't see the channel's panel, then you can go up under the window menu and choose channels now what you want, tio is duplicate the channel and there is a command that will let us did not only duplicate the channel, but duplicated and send it into a whole nother document because that's, what we need to do and that command lives in the file menu. So this is the fly out, maybe for the channel's panel, and I will tell you that the full steps to this technique lives on my website. Photo lisa dot com photo lisa with e l e s a in the tutorial section in all its glory, so we're going to click the channel's panel fly out me and you and we're going to choose duplicate channel in the resulting dialog box. We can tell funny shop what we want to name this new document that we're about to create so I'm a name this displacement map you can call yours, map whatever, and actually I types that in the wrong box I meant to type it here, so we're gonna choose new document and then that's where you want to name it ok so let me do that one more time get my steps right so from the channel's pain I'll fly out mimi she's duplicate channel choose new from the destination area so it's saying hey you're going to duplicate this channel would you like to send it somewhere else? Yes photoshopped we would thank you for asking so from that poppet menu in the destination part choose new ok and that's where you want to give it a name case the type displaced that map or math or something meaningful grayscale guy whatever you want and click ok when you do that photo shop opened up that document for you see I only had these two images open before photoshopped created a new document for me that includes the blue channel from that other document now what you want to do is you want to blur it ever so slightly because we want our map to be smooth we won't we don't want it to have any hard spots in it so we wanted add just a little bit of a blur to this image you could probably get away with skipping the blur on this one he probably could but again it just depends on the kind of image that you're using this on at home so go ahead and give it a slight blur by choosing filter blur gosse ambler you don't want to blurt that much you really only want to enter a value somewhere between one and four if you're dealing with a really small a pixel to mention image than you can get away with one a one pixel blur but if you're using pretty high pixel to mention image a large image, then you'll need to use a larger number probably want to go with four in that situation I'm going to split the difference and go with two to go ahead and press ok now we just want to save this document we're going to save it and close it so we're going to choose file save as because we want to give it uh I want to put it on my desktop here so I can easily navigate to it ok, so I've got it saved as displaced that matt I want to make sure you save it as a photo shot file and click save now you can close the document now we're back in the body image that we started out with okay? So the last time we were in this document we were cruising around in our channels panel trying to find where this guy was the darkest so we're finished with that part but we want to turn on all of our color channels against just click the rgb channel to turn on all the channels in the image to get it backto looking like it did to begin with now we can go back to our layers panel the next thing we need to do is create a selection of the guy because we're going to use that to mask the circuit board when we bring it in, okay and it's easier to do it now because when we bring the circuit board in the circuit board is going to be on top of this guy, he will be able to see the guy, and it would you would have to do more steps in order to turn it off and then create your selection so it's easier just to do it now, so we're going to create a selection of this guy easiest way to do that is to grab the quick selection tool users a decent amount of contrast between the guy in the background. Okay, so just paint over the dude with quick selection tool remember to go down and brush size to select the small areas I want to come down here and get his arm and zoom in to see how accurate my selection is. It looks really good, except for his underwear, sticking out a little bit on the left side of his waist here, if I click and drag with the quick selection tool over that area, it's going to grab that whole swath of white underneath his arm? I don't want that, so what can you quickly what mode can you quickly pop photo shop in that will allow you to find tune that selection really easily? Quick mask mode. Ok, so let's press the cuchi to pop into quick mask mode, or you could press the circle within a square icon at the bottom of the tools panel. Okay, so I'm gonna press the cuchi, and that gives you that red overlay, which lets you see where this election is. Now we can switch to the regular old brushed tool by press and b set black is your foreground colored ship because black will add the red overlay, thereby adding to your selection and I need to go back to a regular brush because I've got that paper damage brush chosen, so press b to grab the brush tool from the brush preset picker in the options bar you want to click a soft edge brush? Yeah, I'm going to go down and brush size because my brush was really, really, really, really huge, and now I can simply paint over that area to include it in my selection that wasn't hard at all, was it that's way easier than trying to manipulate that quick selection tool to select an area that doesn't have contrast and that's the problem that we had right here? So now that we've got that area in our selection, we can pop out of quick mask mood by pressing q or by clicking that circle within a square at the bottom of your tools panel, and I'll zoom back out of my image, so we've gotta get selection going on here now, I want to save that selection so I can loaded again after I put my circuit board in, so I'm gonna go ahead and choose select, save selection and you don't have to say this election, but I think it's a good idea to say this election, ok? So to select save selection and we're going to give it a name of dude, you could name it whatever you want and go ahead and click ok, now we can get rid of our selection, my person, command or control d now we're ready to add our circuit board to our image, so what we're going to do is click our arrange documents icon at the top of the application bar, go ahead and click the two at preview, and we're going to drag the circuit board, layer into our dude layer or do document you could also select all and copy paste to combine these documents going closed the other circuit board image, and I'm going to use my move told position the circuit board where he's, on top of the guy the next thing we're going to do is we're going to run the displacement map filter on this layer so we're going to go up to the filter menu in marin choose distort displace so filter distort displace dialog box this is going to open and you can just leave all the settings set the way they are straight from the factory if you don't know if those settings have ever been messed with the quick way to tell is to press and hold the option can a mac or all on the pc and the cancel button changes to reset go ahead and click reset if you want to make sure that you're displaced dialog box settings are right out of the box go ahead and click ok soon as you click ok funder shops going to say so hey I hear that you're trying to take this layer and curve it according teo the curves and this other thing where does that other thing live where in other words where is the map that you want me to use to try to curb and distort this image so we're going to choose that displacement map that we may just a moment ago click open did you see the circuit board twist okay let me undo and I'll do it again so you made a little bit secrecy that better at home I'm gonna choose filter distort displace go ahead and click ok in this first dialogue from this dialogue you need to tell photo shop where that matt lives that we just made that duplicate of the blue channel that we saved and blurred so we're going to click it and watch my circuit board as soon as I click open did you see it torque okay now the next thing we need to do is we need tio add a layer mask but if we have our selection active on the screen before we add that layer mask then photo shop will fill in the mask for us so this is a time when we're going to recall that selection that we just saved so we're gonna go back up to the select when you choose load selection and from the channel menu here I'm going to choose dude that's the selection that I saved why is the selection showing up in the channel menu? Because what really is a saved selection? It's an alfa channel just like that alfa channel that we created on day one when we were using content aware scale you know how we painted in quick mask mo to mark off the areas we didn't want photoshopped tio squish in stretch when we use content aware scale and we saved that selection it created an alfa channel that's all a saved selection really is is an alfa channel so that's why you can get back at your save selection from the channel menu so we're gonna choose our selection that we already created click ok there's are marching and now we can click the layer mask a button now the only thing left to do in this technique is to change the blend mode of the circuit board to multiply now we always change the limo to multiply know depends on the colors in the two images the reason I chose multiply was that let me turn it back to normal is that this image is really really like my original image in the circuit board that I'm trying to apply to this guy is dark I'm going to end up with a darker image I want to stay in the dark in category okay I'm not trying to lighten the circuit board I'm trying to blend these two layers together because this image is darker than my the image of the guy I want to stick in the dark and category if I want to retain any darkness from the circuit board and I do I still wanted to be obviously a circuit board something choose multiply and you can experiment with other blend mood is in that category and that's absolutely it I would mask off this part um and going back now I shouldn't have included the genes in the selection but that's easy to fix we can click on our layer mask press b to grab the brush tool and with it set to paint with black I can hide that part of the circuit board really, really quickly. Okay, so there's our final our final image so let's do that one more time it is a lot of steps is a fun one though okay so now we're going to open up circuit board and I stock madman okay, so our first goal here is to zip through the channels and see where he appears the darkest somebody used my keyboard shortcuts commander control three four five hey, find the channel with the most contrast pop, open your channels panel go to the channel's panel, fly out many and choose duplicate channel from the destination poppet menu we're going to choose new document and we're gonna name it map go ahead and click ok photoshopped immediately is gonna open that channel in a new document we're going to give it a little bit of a blur by choosing filter blur gosse ambler and if you're working with a very low pixel to mention image you want to enter one if you're working with a very high pixel did manage to dimension image you can enter up to four go ahead and click ok now we're going to save this file save as I'm going to throw it on my desktop here I'm gonna leave it named map make sure that photo shop has chosen from the format poppet many in click save now you can close that sin awfully temporarily turned off our other channels when we were scrolling through our channels to find out where he appeared the darkest we just need to click the rgb channel in order to turn on all the other colors again. Now we can go back to the layers panel and this is a good time to create a selection, okay or you can save it till later six and one in half dozen in the other this image is easier to create a selection with the magic one because we've got just a little bit of quiet over here in a little bit of white over here, so what we're going to do with the magic one is click one time right there hold on shift to put the the tool in addis election mode click again keep holding down shift and then click on that last little white chunk at the bottom now we have selected the background and what we really want is the foreground so we can flip flop our selection choose the select mini choose inverse and now we have a selection of the actual head ok, so we can try to the selectmen you know quickly save our selection we'll call it madman click ok, now we can get rid of our selection now we're ready to add the circuit board to this document so we can click our arrange documents icon choose the two a preview click the circuit board image. Drag it over into the other open document. Get rid of the circuit board image now we're ready to run our displacement filter, so now we're going to go up to the filter menu. Choose, distort, displace! Go ahead and click ok in this dialog box, leave those settings the way they are. And in this dialog box she needs navigato wear that blue channel lives and it lives in the document called map so go ahead and choose that and I'll move this out of the way and watch how that circuit board torques itself or morphs when I choose open ok, did you see it change so it's morphing itself according to the shadows in the gray scale image that we created from that blue channel that's what's happening there. So the next thing you want to do is change the mod tio multiply. Now we can bring up that selection that we already made such you select load selection from the channel. Many because remember, a safe selection is nothing more than an alfa channel. Or I should say that backwards and alfa channel is nothing more than a safe selection makes it sound much less scary alfa channel what is that? So choose the selection that you save from the channel poppet menu click ok and now you can add your layer mask to that layer. And then the last step is to click within the mask in with the brush tool set to paint with black. Then you can reveal the other areas that you need. Teo, I think this is a fabulous image to end this workshop on. This is probably what you all are feeling like at this point. So now in a cone down here in reveal his teeth, it's not that I think your madness and I think your heads are about to explode. So, so many fun things that you can do with photo shop there is just no end to the techniques, so I shall leave you with that comforting, soft and happy imagery in your head. How you feeling?
