Linked Smart Objects

So we've got several examples here for you the first thing we're going to do is create linked smart objects is this really cute? She is oh, so cute so what I've got here? If we look in my layers panel, you can see that I've got a slew of smart object if I click on each of these layers, you can see that some of them have different opacity setting some of them are at different sizes, but it's still the same content ok, so let's build on this one, I'll go ahead and delete all of these guys I should clicking to activate them will leave our pink background going on here so let's, go ahead and bring in our illustration as a smart object again, you cannot drag and drop from many bridge she's filed place navigate to where the illustration lives now we're in folder number eleven for linked smart objects and we're going to navigate to wear the illustration lives like place look ok let's, go ahead and make her mermaid larger by shift option or shift all dragging press return when you're finished.

If we duplicate the smart object with are extremely handy keyboard shortcut of command j on a mac or control j on a pc, we are creating a linked instances of this smart object okay, so I'm gonna go ahead and press and grabbed the move tool and we're going to scoot mermaid number two over we're going to some and free transformed by pressing commander control t shift option shift altana pc were to make her a little bit smaller now we're going to play that smart object again by pressing commander control jay, I think of that keyboard shortcut is jumping content upon another layer it anyway, I remember that it's jay so now many press and hold the move tool and we're going to skip that mermaid to the other side of our bigger mermaid and we're going to press and hold the shift key so that we don't scoop her vertically and then and see a six you can actually activate more than one layer and change their capacities together at the same time ok, then I'm gonna drive these guys below our first mermaid so that they appear to be sitting behind her. Now I'm gonna duplicate one of the smaller mermaids again by pressing commander control jay press vida grab the move tool rescued her over press command tea or control t to summon free transform shift option shift all drag, make her a little bit smaller their murder and duplicate her press and hold a press the wiki to summon the move tool and screwed her over to the other side and go ahead and drag the little ones to the bottom of the layer stack so that they are kind of the big one is in front in an arrangement order as far as what's in front once behind. Now let us say that we like our telecom position here I'm a dad gum our client or art director wants us to get rid of that star in her hair. Holy how does that mean that we have to completely start over, redo the artwork and illustrator, bring it all back and do all that re sizing incapacity change? Absolutely not, because what you've done here is you've created linked smart objects and because we brought in the illustration as a smart object, we can trigger illustrator to open from right here within photo shop, and it doesn't even matter which one of those you do it on. It doesn't have to be the first smart object that he made it could be any of them as long as they're lamed. So now what we're going to do is control or right click to the right of the layer name and we'll choose edit contents illustrator's going to squawk it, you say how my heart there's been some changes made outside of me, so I can't be held responsible? What happens when you open this file? Basically that's what it's saying so now here we are, an illustrator and let's delete that star, so automatically when the open illustrator your selection to or it's like your move tool in front of shop is active so we could click on the artwork and I can't activate just the star because why the artist who created the artwork grouped it so we need tio tried to the object mini and she's hungry. Now, if we click off of the artwork and the mouse back over to weaken, pick up individual pieces so let's delete that star now we're going to try to up to the final minute and choose safe. We're not going to say it as because that will break the link between the illustrator file in photo file. Not that it's a physical link hey servant, you save now we're going to close the illustrator file pot back over to photo shop in our stars disappear from oliver mermaid kids, so I hope you're starting to get an idea of how powerful these things are, so any time you've got repeated content in your designs, you know logo's is a great you shoot this stuff like this silly stuff like this. If you've got if you created a bunch of shapes to create a background one of ben's books, I think his cs teo studio techniques that he used to do for adobe press had a beautiful cover on it. With a face and it had a camera lens on a near and then it had all these amazing leaves fanned out in a pattern. Well, those leaves were all smart objects, so if he changed one of those leaves they all changed wherever they appeared in the composition and it's a really efficient way to work now let's take another look at a similar technique and I think the difference between lincoln unlinked can I interrupt you? Who is this? Who is this ben that you speak of? It's been been wilmore is one of my mentors taught me a whole lot about photo shot when I was first learning thanks to buy his books before I ever met and you talked about surreal everybody's yeah, yeah so that was his cs to studio techniques book that had that that was one smart obvious is came around cool. So mr ben will moore who was here yes, really are very recently for his work. Yeah, I sort of live fish out for photographers and side note happens to be here. Yeah, yeah, I had a ball watching that class. Okay, so here we have another little mermaid and this is actually a file that we used the other day in our selection's class relieves the lasso tool the polygon a lasso tool to create kind of a sarah graph effect where we through all these shapes and filled in with color because our original mermaid was just an outline. Okay, so what we're going to do with this is we're going to create a smart object out of the whole mess because if you really did want to create a sarah graph effect, which is think andy warhol in his famous marilyn monroe, you know, three of anti rosa three with different contrast in colors. We could do that easily with something like this, okay, but we've got a bunch of layers to work with, so let's compress them into one layer so that we can duplicate on and move him around so let's, go ahead and shift, click toe activate the top most layer flower shops going to activate everything in between and now we can control or right click to the right of the layer name and choose convert a smart object. Now we've got one layer to mess with, but you know that we can double click this layer and photo shop is going to open that temporary document that shows us all of our original layers. We're gonna go ahead and close that temporary document cause we didn't make a change and I'll collapse my many bridge panel now let's give ourselves more room to work with, so we're going to press see to activate the crop tool. And to use the crop told at canvas space I'm gonna press and hold the option key on a mac or halt on a pc to resize the crop box from the inside out and I was gonna arbitrarily drag a little ways press return now we got more space to work with calls them out just a little bit actually I'm gonna make the cameras a little bit bigger because we're going to duplicate her several times okay so here we are with our original smart object I'll grab move tool and scooter up now well may looked at creating links smart objects a moment ago we were using the duplicate keeper shortcut so we'll do that again commander control jay and we'll move her down here and we'll do a duplicate again command or control jay and we'll skip her over now we've got three mermaids since these air linked smart objects if I change if I edit the contents of one of them it's going to change all of them so let's say I want to change the background color okay well since they're smart objects you know this is a nested kind of thing I'm gonna double clicked open my original layer players and then I can come down here to my color film I solid feel adjustment layer pop it open and she was a new color from the color picker case well gold in the pink room click ok she's file save to save the temporary document that photo shop just opened close it and I come over here and all instances of the mermaid change what if I don't want that? What if I really do want more remains with different color backgrounds but still using the smart objects if you want to do that you need to create unlinked smart objects and it is hard to remember to do that and the command is not easy to get to you and it only lives in one place so we're going to trot up to the layer menu too smart objects new smart object via coffee can't be any more cryptic what does that tell you? Why doesn't it say new unlinked more objects? Well I guess then we wouldn't have a job teaching photo shop if it were that easy so that's the way you can create an unlinked smart object so layer smart object new smart object via copy okay we're going to go ahead and double click to name that one unlinked so that we know what the heck is going on in our layers penal and let's scoot this guy over and then I'll ship clicked like all of them and skip him over now let's change something about that unlinked smart object so we can double click it's layer thumbnail to pop open the original layers say we want to change the background color it's double click our color phil layer perhaps change it to yellow click ok command or control s to save that temporary document and then commander control w to close that window, see how that mermaid background is different from the rest of them that's the difference between a link to the unlinked smart object so depending upon what you're doing with your composition, you're going to want to create one or the other. Now when we were creating that spread of mermaids that we did a moment ago, you noticed that I was able to change them in limited ways without the rest of the smart objects changing, I could do anything I wanted to these other smart objects that don't involve editing the smart object. Ok, so if I really wanted to change something about the mermaid on our left here I could create an adjustment layer let's say change her colors it is changing both of them but it's not changing both of them because it's a smart object is changing both of them because adjustment layers air affecting everything underneath so I could just clip that one adjustment layer to that single instance of the smart object and it's not going to change all of them. The only time that you will change all instances of a smart object is if you double click it to open up the original layers from which it is comprised and change something in that temporary document then when you say that file and go back to this file all of those instances we're going to update, but you could use free transform all day long. You can change larry opacity, you can do things like what I just did, which is using adjustment layer to alter color on one instance and it's not going to update all of them it's on lee when you double click to expand that smart object into its original layers and you change something here, say that close it that all of those instances we're going to update back in your push up document hey, it is a little bit tough tio to get your head around anybody have any questions on that part? Heller all glazed dawson a lot of people would like to know is there any indicator that shows whether or not smart objects are linked or not? Negative good buddy wish there were but that's why it's important to name those layers you know, but just remember that if you're do student a straight duplicate copy in the layer it's always gonna be linked, so you have to go up to the layer menu and she's smart objects new smart object via copy that's the only way to create an unlinked smart object you know, I can't tell you how many times that I forgot to do that you know I'm just duplicated it and then I start changing content blackout some conferences that I teach at that to create a little self promotional hoo ha right so I'll put different covers of my book and you get one cover size just right you can duplicate it and then I try to swap it out for the other boats that I written and then all of those dagan layers change like well, I guess we've duplicated this morning objects in their link things back up and create unlinked coffees okay, a question from sophie one from canada can you clip the adjustment to more than one layer? And if so how? I don't believe that you can because it's if you clip it it's only going to clip it to the layer underneath it but she could clip several layers toe one layer okay? Like maybe you might have put it in a folder or add layer greet brother okay that's possibility the question was can you put it in a folder? Is that the question? Oh, was that your suggest? So you know, choosing and that might work you might be able to create a layer group got it isn't so if he created a layer group looking this do that so I'll shift click to activate several layers and then control or right click near the layer name see how the mini is different depending upon where you click all right, we'll go later fly out menu and you can say new group from layers and that creates a layer group and then you could create the adjustment layer and clip it to the group that might work ok? Sam cox would like to know does file size grow less with links for objects as opposed to copied small objects? I have no idea that's a great question yeah it's you're really going to have to do your own test to tell which is more efficient faras file size you know we talked about that a little bit this morning is working with smart objects really any better than duplicating layer content because another way tio compress many layers in tow one layer onto which you can do things like run filters or add layer stiles is to create a stamped version of those layers okay, so you would activate a bunch of layers and then while holding the option can a mac or altana pc click the layer fly out may need a little tiny little button at the top right and then choose merge layers? What that did is that created a new pixel based layer that contains everything on all the layers that we're currently active when I chose that command so that's another way but the jury really is out on which method is better for file size okay as faras editing flexibility, smart objects or definitely the way you just to clarify once again for deborah's is there a way to unlinked that smart object that once you create it as a linked one already I don't believe so they have to thank you for all the clarifications yeah you have to delete it in heaven is a go thank you okay so we have about ten ten with its left or so till break okay great so let us go ahead and close that temporary document open at my original again let's just do the link versus that linked one more time quickly with feeling so let's activate all the layers and layers panel let's say we're going to create a nice paragraph only want to duplicate her so we'll shift click toe activate everything in between controller right click to the right of the layer name converts smart object now we're working with one layer the collapse are many bridge press see to grab the crop tool to give us more space to work with press and hold option are all on the pc to make a really big hot box so they've got all kinds of rain and that will scooped her up to the top in just a straight duplicate with the keyboard shortcut command jr control jay is going to create linked copies okay so we'll duplicate her again so if we expand any one of those smart objects and we make a change in the temporary document that photo shop opens and save it and close it. All instances of that smart object will change. This is fabulous stuff, a graphic designers. Oh, my god! Now decree an unwilling to smart object. We're goingto activated in layers. Pain will cruise up to the layer menu, too. Smart objects, new smart object via copy. Grab the move tool, move that one over now when we expand that smart objects contents and we make a change, save it. Commander control s commander control w to close that window. We are working with an unlinked copy, but that said, you can do all kinds of things to those other instances, and they won't change it's only when you double clicked open that smart object content to make a change there that all of the instances changed so I could use free transform all day long. And I'm on lee changing one mermaid at a time. So it's, not like everything you do is going to change every link. Smart object it's on ly double clicking the smart object, editing the temporary document, saving it in closing it that's when it triggers that updating of every instance.
