One of my favorite things to do and photo shot besides partial color fix is adding victor based embellishments two photos it is a whole lot of fun as you're going to see here, so we've got this photo and going along with our deep dive theme he's playing the ukulele to his old girlfriend and if we look over here in the layers panel, you can see that I've got two layers, one of which is a smart object if I turn it off and on, you can see that's for the musical minutes you're coming from, and those are really vectors that I downloaded from I stock photo on that one, so we're going to bring him in to the funny shop document as a smart object which keeps their super powers and the super powers inherent adventures, one of which is infinite scale ability so we can go ahead and re create that closed this document, I'm suddenly thinking that my vector didn't get included in that file, so I'm trying to there it is I did this on purpose to show you an interesting thing that happens when you're us...

ing the mini bridge panel. So I closed the document that I created for you the layer document that I want you to keep hanging around and popped open the original image well, I'm not saying those victor music notes down here in the mini bridge panel why is that? Because the mini bridge panel refuses to show you folders you will never see a folder over here in the preview area of many bridge you can on ly si folders in those source list on the left hand side so don't let that throw you like it just did me ok, so what we can do is we're gonna go ahead and choose the file place command this time to bring in our victor because remember if we drag and drop a victor from many bridge or your desktop into the photo shop document it is not going to come in as a smart object so let's go ahead and choose file place navigates where victor lives now we're working in folder number nine coddler named victor embellish and here's that folder I mean I put that diagram thing in there but I wasn't seeing it many bridge and the reason is because it's folder okay, so I clicked that stock illustration folder and then we're gonna choose the ps file and we'll click place photo shops assumes that you want to resize it so it gives you those bounding box handles we're gonna go ahead and collapse many bridge in this time I do want to do a little bit of re sizing and rotating actually so we're going tio rotate at first we're just going to point our cursor just outside one of the corner handles in click and drag and then you can click and drag within the boundary box to move it around, and my goal is to make those musical notes that like their wafting out of the hole in the ukulele. Now I can't see the other handles on my bounty box, so we're going to use that handy keyboard shortcut we learned earlier for fit to screen, which is commander control zero now we can see our handles, which arguably makes them easier to grab hold of him on holding the shifty sorry illustration doesn't go awlaki job we're just gonna drag downward to make it smaller press commander control plus dizzying up in size and it looks pretty good to me, so we'll click return to let foot a shot. No, we're finished or enter on a pc. The only problem we've got now is that particular illustration that I downloaded has another bit to it that I don't want to use do I have to open it up and illustrator and edit that out? I could fact I could really easily do that because since I brought this in as a smart object as a vector, we could edit it by pressing control or right clicking next to the layer name and choosing edit contents in that illustration wall should pop open an illustrator and it didn't it popped open in the pdf but that's ok if it were an actual, eh, I file, which stands for adobe illustrator, it would've popped open in an illustrator, but we can hide it right here with a layer mask so let's, go ahead and click the circle within a square icon at the bottom of the layers panel to add a layer mask this guy down here. Now we can grab the regular old breast tool by person. Be think about what you're going to do in the realm of the layer mass black conceals and white reveals so it's press are right, brackett he to go up and brush sized. Remember those bracket keys live next to your peaky on your keyboard for kate pearson of the b fifty two's, and then we can just pain to hide the part of the that illustration that we're not going to use. It was the super fun to do. I love mixing victors with photos because it feels like you're mixing riel stuff with surreal stuff, so I like that, okay? Oh, incidentally, dis a little teaser on some of the things that we learned yesterday if I need to those musical notes to be white. Can any reading in the studio audience tell me what I would do? Is there a one step process for flipping that jessica, flip your chips and then come in? That would do the whole no, that would be too hard a super easy way to flip flop colors like this is to use an invert adjustment layer, so we're going to click the half black, half white circle with the bottom of our layers panel and she's invert. The only problem is adjustment layers, as you know, well, effect all layers underneath him unless you you tell it not tio, so we're going to double click that adjustment layer thumbnail and in the resulting properties panel or adjustments panel in c s five, we're going to click that little looks like a square with a downward pointing arrow to its left. We're going to click that and it's going to clip or attached that adjustment, lee, or to just one layer underneath instead of all layers underneath. So now when we come back up here, teo, we've got white music news, so let's, go ahead and try that same technique on another photo this time we're going to plop a dove on top of our guitar for a little hawaiian woodstock e feel will collapse are many bridge so here's our photo so now let's, try it up to the file mini and cheese place navigates where the illustration liz here's our I stopped dove, go ahead and click place like ok and here's our vector illustration oh again, we can resize it if we want by holding down shift key to keep it proportional and then we can plop are dove wherever we'd like on the guitar now I'd rather plop it on the neck of the guitar, but the guitar has a different vanishing point okay, so I need to change perspective on this death we'll watch what happens when you try to change perspective on a smart object we're gonna make sure that we have the correct layer active in our layers panel and well some and free transformed by pressing command tea or control t if you control or right click within that free transformed bounding box you get access to all the different things you can do with it free transform but perspective is great out why is that a lord that adobe we do not know but you cannot change perspective you can't perform perspective, distort or warping on a smart object you have to turn it into pixels, which is a bit of a bummer but let's just take a look at how to do that. So what press escape tio get out of that free transformed bounding box if I were doing this for real for a client, what I would do at this point is I would deflate kate that's smart object so that keep one hanging around as a real smart object why, if I need to resize it without losing quality or if I need to go edited and illustrator I can do that case I'm gonna keep one copy is a smart object hanging around turn off its visibility I box you don't need it right now click the other layer to activate it and now it's control or right click to the right of the layer name in choose a rast arise layer that's going to turn that victor I don't into pixel base layer okay, so see how the smart object badge went away I think we've got some people doing some fun things with their birds here in the studio audience, so now we're working with the plain old pixel base layer of which we can do anything we want to you with free transform so we'll press command to your control t to bring that back up and now only controller right click within the bounty box we have all those other to store options are transform options rather so we can choose perspective and then we can put our little bird down here on the neck of the guitar and then we could grab the top left corner handle and this drag it into, um the direction that you want your vanishing point to appear to make that look a little bit more realistic and I might make him a little smaller teeth and then to really make it look a little bit more realistic. Obviously this is never gonna look realistic, but you could add a layer mask and hide part of the the bird's feet to make it look like he's actually kind of nesting, arresting rather on that guitar. Now, let's say, for whatever reason I needed to edit that bird an illustrator, I could turn off the visibility of the perspective change that I did come back to our smart object that we widely kept hanging around, and this time when we choose edit contents because this file carried the extension of illustrator, it really should pop illustrator open thank you. So now we could editor bird and a million different ways I'm gonna do something terrible and take off his beak just to show you the change will update itself, so I'm going to select the artwork and this was a stock illustration, and oftentimes when you're downloading stock illustrations, the creator will group all the art work together in the hopes of keeping you from ruining their artwork. Well, I'm intentionally going to ruin their artwork, so I can't select part of that bird unless I unde group it because all the different pieces of that artwork or kind of locked together so we're going to try to to the object menu, and we're going to choose a new group so if you're ever trying to select something an illustrator and you just cannot make it happen, the artwork is grouped, so now we come over here delete the beak choose file saved, not saying as only say because there are on ly editing the instance of this artwork where it appears in our photo shop smart object such you save close that file come back over here to photo shop and we've got to be close bird creepy but it illustrates the point so pretty easy to work with vectors in your photo shot files any questions on working with factors in that way from the great interwebs excellence? Another fun thing that you can do with vectors as smart objects as you can push photos through them? This is a great way to create an ad or a business card for your photography business all kinds of things like that so let's, take a look at how this file is created over here in our layers panel I've got a folder group appear layer group rather is just a folder that contains all of my text layers okay, so that's that's where the texas coming from and then here we can see a photo of malley and then underneath it we've got an illustration that's also a smart object of a turtle you'll also notice if we zoom in here that the layer thumbnail for the photo is kind of over to the right and then there's a downward pointing arrow to the left of it. That means that that particular photo is being clipped to the layer underneath it so that it's showing through the shape of whatever's below it. Now this technique would work on anything that had transparency on the layer below. Does it have to be an illustration? It doesn't have to be a smart object, it doesn't even have to be a graphic it could be text. Okay, so with this technique photo shop is going to shove the photo through whatever the shape is of whatever is on the layer underneath it. So it's a great way to push photo through text as well, which will look at in a second and then the other thing we've got here is a drop shadow honor turtle. Then we've got a layer mask attached to our smart object that is simply letting me hide the four, five or six other turtles that were also in the illustration that I downloaded and then at the bottom of the layer stack, we've got a solid color feel layers that's where our new white background it's coming from so let's go ahead and this one, I'm not goingto recreate from scratch completely because of that text, but we will go ahead and delete our photo and our turtle layers and we'll start over from that point so just shift click toe activate both players and then send them packing by pressing the delete key and that seriously was my favorite new feature in photo shop c is for and only took us what inflated shop see us for was finish up ten and we've got the ability to delete players with the delete key otherwise you had to drag him to the trash can icon has been in pain ok, so let's go and start bringing in our imagery we're going to go ahead and click and drag our maui image into the document and we know by now that because that's a raster pixel based image photo shops going to go ahead and bring in as a smart object automatically press returned a left footed shot no, you're finished we can't do that on the illustration because it won't come in as a smart object so we need to use the file place command to bring in the illustration for the victor. So now it's tried up to the file menu and choose place navigate to where it lives. This one is in folder number ten vector photo frame and again when we were in many bridge we're not seeing these other folders because many bridge refuses to show you folders we can see the folder using the foul place commune now so here's our turtle illustration so there's three turtles in there go ahead click place and this time we do want to resize it and I mean a lot do we care about that or we're gonna lose quality if we do that? Absolutely not because it's a vector and we brought it in a smart objects of footage shot remembers the super powers inherent to that file format and so I zoomed out a little bit by person command or control minus on the pc so that I can see all my hand because I'm going to make this thing honking big we're going to hold down the shift key we're gonna add the option chiana mac or altana pc so we resize from the center out and we're going to make that solid black turtle pre big released the modifier keys and then you can drag that illustration around while you're in the act of re sizing it. I think that's going to be about big enough, but the great thing is that what if it isn't? Do we have to start over? Even after we shove this photo of malley through that turtle? We can go back and re size that illustration all day long and we're still not going to lose inequality, so go ahead and press return on a mac or enter on a pc zoom back up a little bit now I've got a little bit of the fin of that other turtle hanging out here I could opening up an illustrator in it that out if I knew how to use illustrator let's say we don't so let's just add a layer mask to that smart object to hide the other bits we're not going to use. So we'll come down here and click the circle within a square icon at the bottom of the layers panel make sure the mask is active. It is because we haven't clicked on anything else. Got that little white border around it now with the regular old brush tool, which is already active it's not just pressed, be let's, go up and brush size with our bracket key, and then we can mouse down to where that other part of the turtle is and just paint across him to hide him. Now we want to pay a little bit of attention to layer stacking order over here. So for this whole clipping technique toe work, you have to put the photo above the layer that has the shape into which you want to shove the photo through. Hey, otherwise, we would be trying to shove the turtle through the shape of the photo, and that would not get us anywhere. Okay, so we need to change later stacking order so it's, click and drag our turtle. Down below the photo and then you can do this nice to part of it in a couple of different ways, I think it's easier to do with the keyboard shortcut that you can do it through the menu adams to if we press and hold option on a mac or all on a pc, and you point your cursor at the dividing line between the two layers you want to attach to each other, your cursor will turn into a little square with a downward pointing arrow to the left of it in c s six in any other version of the program and this ability to clip layers together like this has been around forever. But in every other version of the program you get a different cursor, you get double circles that air intersecting and then the arrow. So if your cursor doesn't look exactly like this, then you're on a previous version now the program but it works exactly the same way. The point is you have a point, your cursor at that dividing line when it becomes that special icon, then you give it a click in the layer above, get shoved through the shape of the layer below it and finish up scoops that over to the right and gives you that little arrow saying, hey, I am totally attached to this thing that sitting underneath me to know it can seem out and we have a little bit of work to do to make it look good but that's only fine, so now we can come up here and start arranging our photo really? All we've done is masked it in the shape of the turtle because layer mass sir, what color black you're masking tape is black and phone shop, so let's come up here and activate the photo and let's grab the move tool by pressing the v so we can try to position it within our turtle. The problem is, and I made the turtle a little bit too big, not a problem. Click to activate the illustration thumbnail not the mask but the actual illustration in some unfree transform three sides your window so you can see the handles and now we can resize that turtle so that he fits our photo or vice versa get him positioned just right I'll call that good and press returned a left footed shot. No, we're finished and we'll chiel that make our photo a little bit bigger to you this because we can and again, if you're enlarging just a little bit like this with free transform, you're not going to completely destroy the quality of the image press return now we need to edit our mask a little bit more because now we in moving the illustration we've got a few more turtle parts showing so it's click to activate the mask on a smart object press b to grab the brush tool pressed me to grab the breast chill you see me pressing bi lo shops and now we already have blacks that is our foreground colors we can come in here and hide those other turtle bits when I download illustrations like this that have a bunch of different pieces of art the same file I don't never delete him because I like to experiment with the different pieces to see which one is going to work best for me, so I had to keep him hanging around and now what we can do it isthe turn on our copy, we could move it around a little bit it's I'm moving my turtle, click to activate my copy layer position that there and now let's add a drop shadow case will click to activate our turtle layer. Click the effects button at the bottom of the layers panel choose drop shadow and again you do not have to be stuck with using this angle dial to figure out where you want your drop shadow. You can this mouse over to the document itself and click to drag it around and I like my drop shadows really soft and fluffy, so I'm going to choose fifty percent for the opacity and you have full zoom control while you're in this layer style ballot box too click ok now last but not least let's say that I want my turtle and my photo a little bit bigger do I have to keep adjusting them individually now we can click to activate the other layer summoned free transform use our fifth to screen shortcut of commander control zero we can resize those layers together if we wanted to make it big enough so we can skewed our copy up into that nick so that's another idea for using victor's in conjunction with photos so not only can you add vector embellishments to your photos but you can also use vectors as frames for your photos hey so let's do that one again quickly go and turn off my copy here delete mighty image layers now we're going to click to dragon our photo of malley is going to come in as a smart object great because we might want to swap that photo out maybe every time we run this particular ad for the maui tourism board we swap in another photo into that turtle we've just created an ad template it's a great stuff for graphic designers so now let's choose file place to bring in our illustration we're already on the folder where it lives could place collapse are many bridge and now while holding down the shift key an option on a mac or altana piece see we're going to drag diagonally outward to make that turtle really big press commander control zero again to fit to screen and this time I'll make sure he's not bigger than our than our photo now it's time for us to either clip them together and then add a layer mask or at the layer masking clipped them together it doesn't matter which one you do first we can go ahead and tack on a mask since we're on that layer so we'll click the circle within a square icon at the bottom of the layers panel press b to grab the breast who'll take a picket your color chips black conceals fight reveals use your right bracket key to go up and brush size your left right to kick down and fresh size so funny you'll see me hit in those keys but sometimes the keyboard shortcuts just don't do anything do they apparently not in cia six it's funny I haven't had that problem at home that we've had here a couple of times a few people in our studio audience have added tio ok so we've got the other turtle parts hidden it's kind of fun to say turtle parts in the sins and never thought I would do that but here we are so now let's take a peek at our layers panel to make sure that we've got the stacking order correct like I can't believe this stuff she says so we need to put our shape underneath the photo layer so let's drag that down and now, while holding down the option, can't imac are also on the p c we're gonna point our cursor at the dividing line between the two layers that we want to attach to each other, and we're going to give it a single click, and our photo is going to end up inside of her turtle, and now we can click, which ever piece of the art that we need to affect next? In this case, it's the photo that we're going to grab the move tool grabbed the move, tio seriously for the shop in position or photo, where we like it like make it just any that their press ok not clip back on the turtle layer, and we can add a drop shadow, we'll call that good, and then we can turn on our text, so groups here's our total ad that we've made any questions on that we do have a couple of questions lisa and it's, just nineteen, sixty three had asked you had well, you chose this solid black turtle, and then you had one that was black with more detail on lines through it, and hts, like a sixty three, is wondering if that what photo would have worked through the other turtle? He really wouldn't it would come through the black part of the eternal, so we would have ended up I liken to show you I can unlinked the mask from the layer content. She yeah it's just not going to come through it all. You really need black for that for this particular technique toe work so go ahead unclip them that's a good tip for you if you want to unclip those layers together, you can just option or all click again to do that so there you can experiment. Actually, this turtle would work because he's not transparent. Since we've got a white background back here, I thought that turtle was transparent, so since he's solid, it will work on that other turtle. But if that particular turtle wasn't filled with why in these areas then you would see that photo coming through all the different lines and that would be incredible. Maybe so the one so started this I guess it would work on this other turtle the other one that was darker yeah waken move this guy around to you and see yeah would work on that as well. Anything that's filled with color it's goingto come through even if we just put incidentally enough, if we turn off our turtle layer and we own group that photo justice is an aside a little bit more about clipping masks, which is what we're creating here we're going to create a new layer and I'm in a position it below the photo grab the regular brush tool come appear to the brush preset picker and choose a super funky brush tip okay, so we'll go for one of these chalk deeds down here and if we come over here and just make a brush stroke across our canvas that I can clip that photo through brush troop so there's all kinds of things that you can do with with clipping groups like that. Any other questions on yes, we have one callie cam would like to know what if you bring in a second photo it's a smart object like as if to make a collage like if you had two photos basically, I guess through that turtle, how would that work? I'm not sure I'd have to test that out, so I think it might have been better uh, that was a follow up about the meditate, a question so woman one second and I think, yeah, I think her first question was when bring in a photo as a smart object, what happens to the meta data, the title, the description and the key words and then I think the follow up wass if you have a second photo, what happens to that metadata okay, I believe the meta data still meta data is still in there so anything that you might have incorporated into that image you can look at and photo shot by choosing the found me near then file info so that stuff should still be in there so there's a meditator right there so bring in a photo and as a smart option isn't gonna strip anything out of it that's already in it okay question in the audience I was just uh can I had given me like a solution for the tool thing yesterday? Oh, so I was I don't know if that's exactly what it is but in preferences under general and the unchecked q shift kiefer tool switch and I haven't gotten stuck anymore oh interesting. Interesting thank you. Any other questions? Yeah. Oh, friend um could you just say again d from philly how you unclipped the photo sure way just pressed and held the option key important our curse shirt the dividing line between the two layers are all on a pc and you can see the cursor when you've already clipped a layer and then you want to unclip it, see how there's a slash to the arrows that's photo shots might say hey, I'm about to unclip these guys so let's look at that again real quick on text okay? We'll go ahead and close this image because I can't see folders in the dorm a bridge I have to come over here so I've got another foul for you we'll open it both of these guys can open it up there we'll say ok on that now we'll go open up our other photo so what I've done here is I've set some text malley that's where that's so it's coming from down here so we just typed in malley and then I brought in a photo and I clicked to the text layer and it shoved it right through that shape so we can look at how to do that I'll go ahead and unclip these layers again by option or all clicking the dividing line between them so right now if you look at the layers panel I just got a whole bunch of stuff going on here I've got a type player skip o'donnell was actual photographer for this image then we've got the photo layer then we've got text and we've got a solid color adjustment layer down there which is where our white background is coming from so let's, go ahead and delete that photo so this is what we've got so we've said some text I added a slight stroke tio just a little bit of a stroke one pixel said it about fifty percent opacity so let's bring in that photo file place this is in your extra folder inside holder number ten vector, photo frame and it's included this is an extra so we can navigate toward that photo lives bringing in flow shot puts the free transform bounding box around it we can press return to get rid of it now we just need to pay attention to layer stacking order here so the photo layer always has to be above what you wantto shove it through actually did this technique for finish up use your magazine and we named it pushing photos, which is a little obscure nod to that may be pushing ten about air traffic controllers. Yeah, so now we've got our layer stacking order correct and we're going to hold down the option can amass are also on the pc and then we're gonna clip those layers together and I actually clipped it to the wrong text layer there's my malley text so we just shove that photo right through that shape. Then if you want to move the photo around within the shape, just click to activate it. Press vd grabbed the move tool and you can move it around and if you want to move the photo with the text, then you'd have to shift, click to activate both of them and then you can move them around as one piece and then again to unclip that photo you can option or also click that dividing line again anybody having questions on that part? Great way got one this is a little kind of bit random, but is that the only use for clipping two things together in the layers panel or is there other techniques that you can use by knowing that key stroke or whatever it is to clip the two layers together? Yeah, that particular key structures for clipping two layers together, but that's the only technique that you can really use it for is I think, he said like a clipping mask is what it's called yes, you can probably use that sank he were short cuts, a clip, an adjustment layer to photo instead of popping over the properties or the adjustments panel so it's just I don't know do a vibrant, suggest mint layer ok and let's say we didn't clip it to the layer below using the adjustments panel or properties pain on we closed it you could probably yeah, you could clip it using that keyboard shortcut as well. So in other words, instead of having a pop open the properties or adjustments panel back open and clicking this little button right here that you could issues that same keystroke option or ault on a pc and point your cursor at the dividing line between those two layers keep going. Yeah, when we just one second question from the case is, can I use layer masks from other projects over other photos to create interesting photo edges for example, the interesting looking one you made of this surfer in the ocean during this election workshop oh absolutely yeah, you can copy and paste layer masks and if you drag a layer from one document one open document into another open document then you can press and hold the option can a matter altana pc to copy layer mask from one from one image to another so you could do that? We could test that out quickly also go ahead and delete some of these other layers in this document so we've discussed are our malley photo work with ok so here's an image, right? So if we wanted to do our creative edge technique, we would press him to grab the rectangular marquee draw box somewhere in an intern in two and a half two inches in from the bounds of your image and then while we still have a selection tool active let's click refine edge in the options bar they're going to turn on smart radius and we're and dragged that radius slider to the right and actually makes a need effect on this photo because their sand in it so it kind of looks like it goes together let's call that good and we'll say well tell photoshopped via the output to menu too please send this new fancy selection to layer mask and then click ok, so now we've got a mask so let's say we wanted to use that on another image I'll go open up this one right here so if I can arrange my documents so that I can see them both at the same time I can drag from one open document to another using the layers panel so my fancy mask lives there if I dragged this guy over just so I've got the mask there obviously different sizes that's okay, so we'll arrange again so I can see just the one image will cheat and we'll make it a lot bigger so we're just doing this to steal the layer mask and then we can option on the mat or altana pc drag that layer mash from one layer to another so you could uh used the exact same mask from one to one to the knicks you could also go over to your first document option click for all its click to get in the mask and then you could choose select all to get your marching ants running all the way around it and then you could copy that mast your clipboard come over here other photo create a layer mask option click to get in layer mask and then paste so there's several different ways to steal masks in that way and we do have a couple requests if you know it offhand what theme alley funt is called what that text one is oh with the mountie font wass that was from the free minder andy from philly it is impact impact impact is a great one for this particular technique because it's nice and fat and any time you're going to show a photo through text a text needs to be phycor you're not going to see very much of the photo you know little bitty sliver like when I accidentally shoved it through skip o'donnell down here in my current favorite open type font which is audio's probe then you can see hardly any of the photo and incidentally just to finish off those letter forms I always add a stroke every time I do that because otherwise if you've got if I temporarily turned the stroke off and I've got any quiet edges hanging around for white pieces of the photo like right here it tends to me to look like the letter form is unfinished like it's not closed like it's just hanging out there so what I like to do is finish those letter forms off when I bring a photo through them by adding just a subtle stroke so all I did was I clicked the effects button at the bottom of the layers panel chose stroke I'll turn it back on I said it to be a really small stroke one pixel this's a super low resolution image ok because I was preparing it for the web for a web gallery so one pixel stroke was nice and settle but then I dropped the opacity way down so you can barely see it, but it's just enough teo teo, finish off the edges of those characters so they don't feel like they're open and like the photos bleeding out of the letter onto the canvas and another thing I did, which is another good tip for you is when I'm adding a stroke like that and I always steal the color of authority in the photo so you can click this little color swatch down here in the layer style dialogue and you're gonna open the color picker well, instead of trying to figure out what color stroke will match what you've got going on in your composition just mounts over to the photo in steel a color that's already in there is any time you pass away from an open color picker, your cursor turns into an eyedropper she could come over here and pick up one of the nice browns from from our pineapple here and click ok when you can see how settle that stroke iss whereas if I had it all the way up a one hundred percent capacity that to me would you to speak too much so you want it subtle so that's how we treated that? Ok, I just need a little clarification one point this is a photo graphics miami and hits nineteen sixty basically want to know can you save a layer mask?
