Course Intro

welcome. It's definitely it's fun to be in the San Francisco studios for a change of pace, because I have done lots of classes in Seattle. But I was actually remembering as we're taking the taxi and I was saying, Isn't that where them stony Center is? Because many moons ago I used to go toe Macworld Expo here in samples when that was actually a thing that people went to. So yes, so this class Photoshopped finishing touches a little bit different than some of the other classes that I've done before. This one is actually based on a book that I wrote. It was actually published in 2006 and which meant I probably wrote it 10 years ago because you start writing a book well before it's actually published. This was actually just to put in perspective. This book was Photoshopped. CS two was the current, probably brand new version at that time when this book was written, and the idea behind this book and similarly this course is you have an image that you like, but you want to take it up a notch...

. You want to do something to take it to that next level, whether it's do something to the colors to make them pop, or add some kind of a color treatment to it, or maybe make it more artistic and add a texture to it. We'll also talk about things like borders and edges and overlays and all kinds of things, and whether it means you've taking a photograph straight at the camera that you really like, but that you want to take it up a notch or you're doing something where you've done some work in light room or Photoshopped to adjust the image. But you still want to do that extra little bit to it. The term that that in my family would say, is where you just wanted to have that little bit of extra thing that people look at it go, Ah, that's really cool And it could just be simply making the colors look really nice or could be taking in a whole kind of fine art direction, with combining images and putting text overlays and all kinds of things. And the idea behind this is really if you're a photographer, that just likes to make nice images, and you're happy with what you're getting out of your camera, but you feel like you want to take it up a notch. Somehow. Maybe you're going to go to art shows where you can sell your work and then in a sea of other photographers that have nice landscape photos. You want your landscape photo, have that little extra thing that people look and say That's more like art. I could actually see myself hanging within the room. Maybe you're a professional photographer that's trying to compete in the ever challenging world. And your challenge is there are people out there that advertise on Craigslist that I'll take your photo for $100 you're trying to convince clients it's worth spending money with you as a professional will. Some of these techniques will like to take things up a notch. So now you're not just selling a portrait. You're selling artwork that people could see being large and put into the living room wall or something of that nature. Uh, the main. My main goal in this course is to equip you with key techniques and creative freedom so that you're feeling like you know enough things in photo shop that you're willing to go off on these creative explorations and create things that are your own was mentioned. This is someone earlier, one of my favorite things that happens When I had this book first published, people would come up to me and say, I got your book. I really liked it And here's what I did with it And they showed me an end result that was completely different than anything in the book. I was like, That's fantastic because that means they were taking ideas and running with it, not just following a recipe. I always laugh about the fact that if you look on YouTube, you can find these tutorials that have, like, a 1,000,000 views on how to make an exploding planet. And it's like so if you ever want to make a planet explosion graphic, you can follow this tutorial. Do that one specific thing, and that's it, because it's like a recipe that says, Follow these steps. I'm not a big fan of recipes because it means you always end up with the same thing. So in this class will be talking about possibilities. We'll say. Here's what's possible with this tool or technique or method, and then you can take it off on any path you want and experiment with it. So nothing like I said makes me happier when people come up with an end result that looks completely different than what we're talking about. So if you tuned in to watch an exploding planet tutorial Sorry, you're not going to see that here? Although some of these techniques you could perhaps turn into an exploding planet. I'm not sure I kind of equate this to for me. A lot of things revolve around food. I love to eat. And so therefore, I found it early age. If I learned how to cook, you know, cooking, eating kind of went hand in hand. And at first I started. I had a couple of cookbooks that I would open to the page. The book would kind of fall open to that section, and I would follow the recipe exactly. And I'd end up with a meal that I was pretty happy with. But then a certain point, I was like, but what else could I do? So I'd start exploring and realize the relationship between using sugar versus brown sugar or whatever it might be and that gave me that creative freedom to go. Let me just try something. So now we have cook books in our pantry that sit there, and usually it's like, How long do you cook a roast for again? That's when I take out the cookbook. In fact, I would probably look it up, but that's kind of the same thing to me with photo Shop. If you're just following recipes, then you're not going any further ahead. You're just learning how to follow someone else's instructions. So we're going to start off talking about some key concepts of things you need to know. But then very quickly talk about examples, and I'm the examples I show you. I'm not necessarily trying to create beautiful works of art today, in the next couple of days of people will want a frame but again to show you the ideas on the possibilities. So that's kind of where we're headed before I jump right, and I always usually forget to mention that. So I made sure I had this slide open before I even started, cause people often ask this question about my various social media type things. Well, that's my Facebook and Twitter as well as my website and my new online training site, which will probably chat about a little bit later on, eh? So that's where you can find me on the social media type places in case that's of interest to you.

I like Dave's teaching style: methodical, well-organized, VERY knowledgeable, interesting, relevant, and delivered with a really good sense of humor (he's a very snappy dresser, too!). Most of all, his lessons are most useful in teaching me how to save time processing my photos in a NON-destructive way and with a stream-lined workflow. This particular class is not only versed in technique, but I LOVE how he encourages creativity through experimentation and "playing" and pushing the envelop with the program. that is not as scary as it sounds because Dave is all about working with smart objects, smart filters and other such ways designed to save us from destroying our photos or work that has to be redone or scrapped because we went down a road of no return.

Dave has a brilliant (as well as humorous) way of teaching and I always learn something new from him. I have purchased many of his previous classes and love every one of them! Thank you for another great course!
