Build Your Personal Brand by Optimizing Your LinkedIn Profile

With over 500 million users linkedin is the social network. You want to reach business owners and other decision makers. You not only want to reach out to those people, but you want those people to see you as a thought leader in your industry. That begins with using the right keywords in every section of your linkedin profile. Here are some tips to follow to help you build your personal brand on linkedin. Use a professional photo that reflects your personality. Use the keywords you want people to find you for in the short form description. Use those keywords and related keywords in your long form description as well. Set your location to the largest nearby city, add media content including youtube videos and podcasts, interviews to your profile, including the employer sections to show history of what you have done previously before you do anything else with your linkedin profile. You want to add keywords to your headline. It's important to optimize your headline with the right set of k...

eywords. So your profile comes up first in search results. When people search for you for example, I use the keywords, social media, marketing consultant, agency storyteller and speaker in my profile. That means that my profile is more likely to show up first when people search marketing consultant or social media speaker because I have a combination of those keywords in my profile. When optimizing your linkedin profile, you need to have all sections completed that includes the education location, industry and contact info sections. You also want to include your website, email address, phone number, twitter account and birthday. These fields are searchable, which means completing them will make it easier for people to find and engage with you when you add your school to your profile, linkedin will index your profile along with profiles of other people who went to your college or university. This will make it easy for fellow alumni in your area to find and connect with you while receiving all of those birthday wishes from people that you don't know, maybe annoying adding your birthday to your profile is a great way to show up in your first degree connections feeds. You never know who's going to send you a birthday shoutout and want to know more about you and what you do. When someone searches for your name on google. Your linkedin profile is likely to show up first or near the top of search results. That means you want to optimize your summary section. So people will find your linkedin profile outside of linkedin. When writing your linkedin profile summary, you want to write it. So it reads like the about us page on your website or of a book, a well written profile summary takes time and it should highlight your skill set experience and what you've done throughout your career. When writing your linkedin profile, make sure to include your documented work history, make sure to also talk about your accomplishments. Talking about your accomplishments, will increase your visibility and lead to more opportunities. Your linkedin profile is not just your resume, it's your profile and should reflect your personal brand. Even after you optimize your linkedin profile, make sure to monitor it every week to make sure you show up in the search result. You also want to maintain an active presence by joining groups, contribute to conversations and post original content.
