Working with Video

All right, So we're gonna transition now into working with video inside of WordPress. So I've got a new site set up over here that's called my video site. You can get to this side if you want to take a look at it at knowledge. That's G in a w l e d g e dot ceo knowledge like your knowing on something. I know. I snagged up all the cool domain so you can go to that if you want to see it. I'm just calling it. My video blogged right now. And so there are several people out there that want to know how to work with video because photographers digital SLR cameras. Now they shoot high def video and all that good stuff, and people are experimenting with that and all that great stuff. And so displaying video in a WordPress site can be somewhat challenging, or at least it can to some people. And so there are specific themes that are out there. They're available that cater to video professionals. Press 75 dot com has several video specific themes. They can be modified for photos. We'll talk about ...

that a little bit later, but for now, let's take a look at video. Okay, so this is my video site. Notice there's nothing here besides the hello world Post haven't done anything special, Okay? I just installed the theme and called it my video block. That's it. So let's go into the It's going to the dashboard. You will notice in here that I am running standard version of WordPress standard version of WordPress so that we deal. I'm gonna go into add a new post. I am using the WordPress 3.3 beta software, but that's there's no real difference other than aesthetics. So I'm gonna add a new person to call it my video. Okay? Added to the category of videos. And now this theme actually has a post video options section. Later on in another section, I'm gonna give you my top five video plug ins that will lie. You add video to anything, but in this case, I'm working with the theme and actually supports video. And this is called. This theme is called TV Elements. So, like television elements. Okay. And so the video your l that's you know what? Where does the video live? Or you could just put the embed code in there if you want to copy that from YouTube or wherever. So let's try the sound. Let's go to my YouTube channel and let's grab my processing an HDR, uh, thing here. Okay, I'm gonna grab the share, and I'm gonna go to the embed code here, and let's try it at 5 60 by 3 15 lets you see what that does. Okay, so we'll go back over, I'm gonna post it in. This is using a plug in called simple video in better. You heard me talk about that yesterday. Okay? It makes use of that. It actually requires you to install this plug in before you can start using the theme and warn you gives you a big thing that says you must install this plug in or for this theme toe work. I love theme authors that do that, because that way I know exactly what I need to install before I ever get started. And that way this video option boxes already there when I go to create a new post. Because if I had bought this theme and it didn't tell me, and then I got in here and There's no place to add the video that would drive me up a wall because, you know, for the longest time, people didn't do that when I was back on WordPress. Like to 5 to 8. That's the people didn't add options like this. And so I was constantly wondering, how in the heck did I had my video? We have a big video guy. I do a lot of podcasts and YouTube videos, not stuff. So I was wondering how to do it. I'm really glad they did. Now, I'm not gonna publish this necessarily. Okay. I'm just gonna go and I'm gonna update the post right here at the bottom. Doesn't publish it just updates it. All right. You'll notice at the bottom that there's a video window there and should actually display it. But let's see if it actually works. Let's go here and preview the post. Okay, There it is. It displays the video right there, as it should. Now, if the video needs to be larger, you can make it larger. You can go, you know, adjust the size. I looked a little small to me. Right. So you can go in here back in the post and down at the bottom. You go into the embed code and you can find out how big it is A question. Where did you get the embed code from? I got from YouTube. Okay, so that's where in YouTube do they hide the embed code? Usually it's underneath the video under a tap called share. Thanks. And then when you click share, chances are they're gonna give you the address like this. You just click the little button here and says, embed code. And on video, there's usually an embed box on the right hand side of the video. So all right, so this video looks a little small to me. All right. Well, by default, it's 5 60 by 3 15 All right? Now, unless you're a math wiz, you probably can't do the calculation on the fly like, you know, if I upload if I change this to you know, 9 60 how big is it gonna be? So I'll tell you my trick and this is a very, very poor trick, and the people are probably gonna make fun of me for that. But that's OK, because I usually have either Photoshopped or fireworks or Adobe Illustrator or something running all the time, some sort of imaging program. I go into that program and I created document at the size. This is and then I go and I resize it proportionally to the size. I want the video to be with their height wise, and it tells me the numbers. And then I just come on, copy and paste them back in. It's very easy to Dio, so if I happen to be in a photo shop, which I don't have open right now, I would just create a new document 5 60 by 3 15 Then I'd go image, image size and change it to 9 60 or whatever. Now I happen to know that you two videos can be set to 9 60 by 5 I just happened no enough top my head. I do a lot of YouTube stuff so I can come down. I can update that if I go back to the preview, theoretically, it should update itself. There's a humongous video Hello, and it's ready to go now. That is a little bit bigger than it probably should be because it's exceeding the width of the box on either side, but you could change yours accordingly. However, you need that to be all right. So it's totally up to you, and it's made use of this theme number one and this plug in number two. So there are two ingredients that go into you, you know, utilizing video. You can utilize video in any theme. It is possible through plug ins, and I'm gonna show you my top five here in just a minute. But I want to show you just how easy it is to work with video. Now, let's say, for instance, that I didn't want to use the embed code because you asked me about imbed codes a few minutes ago. Let's say I don't you know, I know about imbed codes or whatever. Let's go, Teoh. Uh, let's see. Let's find my videos. Oh, let's go here. There we go. There I am. So let's do, um, just grab this video here. Okay, so here's the video. I can grab the u R l of this video just by grabbing the URL Just like that, I could go back in here and I can say video. Your l is this. I know that video does 16 by nine videos. So I know how to keep the aspect ratio of 16 by nine. For this, I wanted to be 640 pixels wide, and I know the height of a 16 by nine aspect ratio is 360 pixels. Okay, that's just a lot of fried on. There are a lot of, you know, me doing this manually on my own. OK, that's nothing special. A lot of B. I s time. All right. So we've got that. If I go and I refresh, there's my video video. Uh, I didn't give permission to embedded here secret video, but it works. Okay, I can go into the video privacy settings and change that, but you can see in 6 40 by 3 60 is actually a great size for this, I think because it gives equals on each side and pretty much on the top and bottom kind of gives you like a TV viewing experience, right? Like it's a letter boxed. And that's what this theme is meant to do. And so you can see even with that plug in, you can just use the u. R L. You can use the embed code. It's very flexible and how you do it. If you're uncomfortable with either one of those, you know, using this entirely, you can use any other number of plug ins that deal with video, which I'm going to talk about when I give my top five for in a minute. But questions about working with video or how we insert video the Would it work, though, to insert it the same way as we inserted photographs, you could not recommend doing it. I wouldn't recommend doing that because it's gonna be like a progressive download, and, you know, if it's a big phone, that would be kind of nasty. You can self host video with the simple, better plug in. My recommendation is if you're gonna be producing video online to their users service, like Gmail, YouTube or whatever, or distribute your videos through something like Amazon s three. It won't cost you that much like pennies on the dollar, but you can then set up something and I'll show you the one that I use. Ah, actually, I show in my top five plug ins in just a minute. It's called the J W Player for WordPress and so J. W player for WordPress, and it basically allows you to bring in videos that you host either on your server. Amazonas three. Whatever. It has a lot of skins. You can pick from that, determine what the video player looks like, and then you just insert it into your post, just like you wouldn't images a little short code. You don't actually get a preview of that a little short code, and then when you preview it inside the browser, it of it shows up just like that. And that is another way, because you can customize the way the player looks and feels you can actually brand the player with your logo on all that great stuff. So and that's what I used to do that a lot, too.

I watched all three days of the course. I am a photographer. The course was titled WordPress for Photographers. Only about 5% of the course was tailored to photographers. Most of the content and discussion was for pro website consultants and bloggers. That aside, Mr. Seeley is so well versed in what he knows well. Imagine sitting in front of the camera for 3 straight days remaining articulate and very professional! The class was really presented for bloggers, not photographers. An example of this is on day 3 where the presenter, after talking about photographers' concerns for an hour or two, said he wanted to transition out of photography into blogging. The class seemed short on the type of content that photographers need. It would have served photographers better if the students present in the studio were all photographers. Discussions on watermarking, photo file size and image theft/copyright infringement showed that Mr. Seeley's background in the needs of photographers is lacking, while his expertise in graphics and web design are VERY impressive. Too much of the class time was devoted to answering narrowly focused tech support questions from people other than photographers. It was a wonderful class for the audience that hijacked it, but it should have been titled and described differently if it was intended for web-blog designers. I really liked the energy, humor, and expertise of Mr. Seeley but the class was too-often off-mission. On day 1, it would have been very productive to show a photographer's WP website that was esthetically beautiful and had all the bells and whistles photographers are looking for. Then explain how you get from nothing to the final website using WordPress. That would have met the needs of pro photographers!

Justin is an excellent presenter. He's easy to listen to and it's obvious he knows his stuff. As a presenter/trainer, I really appreciated his ability to stick with his outline while he fielded questions, both off and on topic. It takes some balancing to do that. He was good at noting questions that were too far afield and I think he actually answered all of them by the end of the three days. I would definitely attend more classes presented by him. Thanks, Justin and CreativeLIVE.

Amazing class! Superb presentation! Justin kept the technical geek-speak to a minimal and made the entire class easy to understand and fun! I think this class should be called Wordpress for the Non-Geek! (As others have said there was not a lot of information specific to photographers, but when it was referenced there was great examples and information provided!)
