1:30 pm - Student Shoot: Kumi, Jewelry Shoot

So I'm using a macro lens for this because all very tight oh, sorry, sorry got imploded on my dad. Ok, so just drop your hands just a little bit like copy face you wait for the model she's gets comfortable if you have the right music plane, you'll get great shots. It's a very comfortable, wonderful way to shoot admissions way for at least ten years on clients love it as well because it's very difficult what you're normally shooting in fashion and beauty where you might have loud music or crazy said springs everybody into a state where it's, like almost in a meditation state was quite nice. Well, that's good job, that's probably better what else one else used to regulation working on directing her. Anything else more than the shots? What you're working on directing her, getting her into a shot so tell her different things to make her comfortable and because this is a very seductive shot, I want to see sexy I mean what's sexy about jewelry, everything so you want get into space like she'...

s no, maybe being seduced by her boyfriend or husband or it's just like hands going around, so just give her some place to go try open I just a little bit like, thanks just just look down just a bit wait face completely just early next year nice and that's johnston also beheaded your blocker if it's make sure up and also you're still getting a reflection let me know coming your way yeah no it's perfect it just because the feelings because you have to die marines can change it was easier there so I'm gonna have our style of sound mind their piece kind of competition you can do with evenings let's talk about that so comey is asking what can accomplish can we do for the hearings in in the magazine work or doing ads? You're usually doing things that in a miracle composition but you can turn this into a double page spread and shoot horizontally so shoot horizontally making still hearing the hero but you're now going across two pages so in the middle of your frame that would be the gutter of the magazine so put her on the right hand page that's nice that's nice that's nice and I wanted to look like a weight reduction and and looked out just back more more it's really good turn your face just over that way. That was very cool what you just did? So this is the first time you shot like this? Correct? Yeah, it was a feel like few is a brand thank you for money so this is the first time you shot like this? Correct? Yeah was it feel like few working in this space this is the first time you guys have shot together right? What was that like for you as the model working with comey in this first time shoot it's it's a little bit uncomfortable just cause you're not sure what they want out of it so they want you to be looking off into the distance or they want that closed I or um but it was fine I mean it's it's you look amazing like that shot right there that shot is so beautiful because even the way you're holding the hearing is a wonderful moment aiken retouch that picture and have it is a wonderful spread that's beautiful to me it's already you established stepping and the mood so I'm just like feel like a stealing your spot and then like I didn't need to communicate anything because she's only in the mood so I didn't want to say anything to break the that flow in your words that you are fresh for brand new model she was here right now by what you get a brand new model and that you really direct this other girl who has no idea what we're doing so the pressure is going to you and you even more so I think when I put the camera in my eye I she was already there hee hee hee hee hee hee hee you know I need this you anything right? But thank you for my name it's me today tora tora how you you look beautiful this is very intimate so way for one second will change one thing that I love the way did you inherit? Everything is so beautiful is perfect for this shoot we'll make one small adjustment. So have you come out for a second and then you'll be right back. It's false! That was great! Introducing yourself but you first as she first comes to sit down, tell her exactly what you want. Is this your first time coming out here? Not knowing what to do with being a brand new model? Thank you for our direction. Tell what you want, what you want to do for a hands or face everything. So you on the spot coming back in a second? Well, get ready to see some questions also ask you a question or let's see uh, diana, but my feeling was way diana brown photography asked, do you always keep a fresh makeup looks for the jewelry or does do you ever want a more dramatic fashion look that still doesn't overpower the jewelry that shows a different client? That's very good question do you want stronger make up when you have jewelry, or do you want to give it a mix? I think you've got to be careful with the makeup that doesn't overpower the ring? You can have two things fighting for attention is one hero in your image, so I want make sure I have the hero be the rain and get to make a beautiful but silent the ring is screaming at her not to make up, so you see some limit. This is a beautifully made up woman. Her hair is perfect, but the focus is on the jewelry, whatever it is or if it's on and do the same story talking about, you know, mascaro, eyeliner or lips, just make sure that's the focus, your question. So I guess I'm wondering, as we go through this, if there are different facial expressions that air looking for moods or emotions, or or is it because we're focused on jewelry that we're kind of doing similar look, because I'm focused on the jury and from my guests from the outside? It looks like it's similar, but they're all so different when you go into editing the shoot. So if I have this as assignment, we could spend all day shooting this, but doing variations, maybe a variation could be five different reigns or a rings and earrings and necklace. It was all geared around this space, and it feels like you're doing the same thing until you get into your you're getting software like whatever you use and you see how different those images really are but this is the world of beauty you working in this very tight space and when you're casting we're casting for job like this versus like a job like we get upstairs it's a very different model because the girl does fashion very well may not do beauty very well because this is very tedious work and takes a girl for a lot of patients going to sit here and give you a lot of different looks for eight hours of five hours whatever it is it's hard not easy seems like there's almost more acting involved in this that it is it is wells is different type of acting someone but they both they haul both call for a different type of talent. So in your casting you look for the girl could do this and ask you look for that hurt your portfolio you find her attitude, you talk about what she's done in the past to find out if she can stay in here for five hours and hours and deliver different shots. Doing beauty is very hard, so you find the same models doing tons of beauty all the time doing fashions very different find using fashion there a book full of fashion because do beauty do't on the beauty but the girl does this job get things very well because these ads pay extremely well, they get used over over again because they're timeless with fashion it's normally about the trends of the moment, so is in for that season with beauty, hair care, skin care. Those ads can sell for five years, which means as a photographer in the model, they're getting paid for usage year after year. It's a huge difference without fashion and maybe the model um ten thousand dollars for that one ad and paid the model here also ten thousand dollars for the head and the photographer both of getting paid again each year as a re using that so it's a huge difference by doing this and learning how to shoot in this way, but beyond the monetary part of it. I love shooting in this beauty space, it's just what I really connect with doing that's me, okay, one final question about that. So you're talking about bringing the energy, capturing the energy, connecting with that energy is that is the intensity of the energy different in a shoot like this than absolutely it's a completely different intensity? They're both it's both energy was a different density, this one's a softer energy, and you're getting a different way and I have friends who shoot this as well. And they're playing different music and speaking in different way and then a beautiful images but this is how I work and it's worked very well for me we offered our own personality into how we shoot and it helps you put your thumb print on your work but the experiment with how do you like to shoot and see if it works for you this way for in a louder, more energetic way everyone's different and that's the beauty of fashion and beauty turned back over to you guys and she's all yours hi hello? Yeah just tell me what we're gonna do okay? So today we're gonna shoot the jury ok? And I want me to do essential and very dreamy and sexy so way alright, something it's fun it's gonna be fun stop you for one second because there's one thing that seems uncomfortable for me for her that thinks she's having apple box just for fun so you should also ask except she looked comfortable and then ask yourself what you could do to make her feel more comfortable like having this versus holding your feet up being tense relax first and then I just told her head just a bit here stop you're going for a second so give her an idea what you're going forward so she could go through this and emotions with his well because right now I feel that you like you're very tense and holding. This should be more relaxed, like you're in a moment. So you look like you're so it churning tio little, uh, like this thing? Yeah, yeah. That's. Good. Very nice church. Drop your head just a bit. Maybe around the neck. Look down. Yeah, like hot half open and then relax him out like, yeah, just open. Just a bit nice, you know, like face towards me. Yeah. And then maybe just get closer. Nice way. Like it's. Just you and the next your finger like that. These are just like that. And your eyes like, say, like just going down way filed to school way like about around you tilt your head just a bit more good coming let's, take a look at someone else and soothe. So was that feel like for you giving her direction in this space? I love it. I love this could also other than the farther away. And then you have to do this and I really more connect did to the world. Oh, that's really beautiful, but just I want to have more variety, but you can never use both hands. I like the scruff hand is the focus, but she had the other hand around as well and play around, but you're the director can do anything you want right now that feels good that's nice, I think it's also easy for a brand new model to do work like this, where it's not as much pressure as doing the fashion work where she has toe control her entire body. Now I just have a segment where easier for her to work and get comfortable and sometimes it's easy to break a model in his brand new this way and then build her up into doing fashion because now she can learn to get comfortable for own skin and how she works in relating to a photographer here before you put her out where she could control her entire body and her face, which is harder, so we're actually gonna go for the first time. I usually start doing something closer first to break her in and build her up for his starting the other way when I'm shooting her with full body she's got to all this different stuff it's harder for brand new model to learn to control her body and be aware her face she's so aware of her body, her face shows it here between the body out it's, just the face and national focus on one area and give me different expressions and move ahead a certain way, and this will make her a bit of model later on. As the photographer, I mean, you could have a great influence with a new model. Wait, you're saying laying the foundation, starting with the face and the expressions, you really can make a difference early on and you can mold their career or give them a career almost by teaching them first in this space and then doing other stuff because it'll make her feel better about her image is about what she's doing and build her confidence, so she gets better when she's doing other stuff. How do you like my phone? Receiver mike let's give her mike, was it like for you? The first thing doesn't work together your first time shooting like this. What was it like for you? Well, it helps that she's really kind, so it makes you feel better, we're comfortable and definitely this environment is a lot more comfortable just because it's not as much as a spotlight on me, it's more of what is a group working as a team? So it it really helps you to feel more comfortable in that way I've seen that that's beautiful that's great.

This was more of a collaborative course with Matthew Jordan Smith and Yoanna House, and it is brilliant. I just finished watching this for a few hours straight. I own several Creative Live courses and this is definitely in my Top 3. Matthew's teaching style is so kind but to the point and informative. That's the kind of photographer I aim to be. He puts forth his knowledge here in a way that totally encouraged everyone involved. I loved Yoanna as well. She was very direct but friendly as well. I loved watching her direct the budding models and her experience showed quite well. This part is for John, the guy who commented on June 2017. I completely disagree with you that there were too many questions and that other people were talking much more than Matthew, and that that was a negative. Matthew's whole point was not just to get straight to shooting but to talk a bit about interacting with people in general. This wasn't just about technical stuff; this was about forming that connection between photographer and model/subject. This was as much psychology as it was about actual shooting, and I absolutely loved that. So I 100% strongly disagree with you as this is one of Creative Live's BEST courses that I've seen thus far. Thanks a ton, Matthew and Yoanna, and thanks so much again, Creative Live (I'm a huge fan of you guys!).
