3:00 pm - Student Casting Session: First Student

It comes we'll get to know your client for a second I'll be right back hi how are you so I guess is the client I'm looking for someone young and fresh and represent our beverage so when I want a girl that zack wrestling for the excitable and approachable and likable and I want a girl who way want to spend money with her so we want to make sure that she you know heavy drinker or um you know I want to know things like that so I'm going to read I want to be able to know that I wanted to be the all american girl like girls next girl next door definitely and I want to like her okay. So good person on tv yeah good person is she easy to work with yeah okay. Okay and does she like our drink yeah, you know I'm no thank s it's gonna be about her personality and her overall look and likability check if I could say it so now I'm getting clearance we can so we're casting for coca cola so I want you to find out if they were shooting tomorrow so you need to find out if the most available for the mush...

for tomorrow and they shut for anything else feel a company that's in conflict with coke pepsi have seen your mountain dew or liver can well, they will know that if the most coming for the casting so when you call the multi agency like ok I'm casting for coca cola I want to see every mold that looks like she's between eighteen twenty five um it's a national campaign so you'll have five hundred miles for this casting over a period of three weeks will be a casting three places like this so you're in charge let's see the models and she's your five cola on the director I hi um so what's your name miss cara cara um have you done any commercial work before? Only a little and it was very of a studio you best video so um do you have any contract with the others drink uh other soft soft drink company right now I do not okay and um are you a bearable tomorrow what time um morning old day what are your hobbies I love a marketing and business I love yoga um I love to stand up paddleboard I love to read and I loathe to say yeah you're singing yes I think the way I hear something sure wow um what would you like to hear how long have you be more than ng? Only a year so you like it? I have so much fun in front of the camera okay coming from stopping for one second that was great that was great. So us taking it I didn't cast all the models but as we go to each one will make no comments so as she comes in, you should let me know right away that you're in charge by saying hello, how are you doing? You ever teaching first that she knows who to come to okay and the rest maybe like you want to open conversation to make them feel good you've been on a zeon castings so what? Some things that people ask you when you come in to a casting well, when it's a commercial or you're selling some expression of happiness or something like that, you want to be likable, so that's kind of why I asked her, what are your hobbies to kind of set her apart from the other models if she says to me, I like to collect insects or, you know, from going on bike rides, you know, I'm going to maybe make a note, ok? She is a certain way that's something our brand is kind of about she'd make a good choice. I'm not really looking so much for the physical side because you're gonna I'm gonna probably him that over to you for me, it's more about can she? Is she relatable to the product I'm selling as we have the casting, the client is looking to see how she fits the brand of coca cola you're looking to see is she beautiful? Can't you do the energy? I want to make my shot work and I'm looking to make sure that my clients happy make sure you can perform the job of running the casting so even though cry and hot hiring me, I'm in it. I'm george absolutely your photographer and you're running the show ok? And it wouldn't you say matthew later on we'd all come together absolutely okay, that will make the final decision on what they want so we're all here you are here's photographer. I'm here is the art director from this agency to make her clock her happy. You make the client had way are all working to make her happy and make our product shine. They picked the best small we can find for that product with that fashion line. Well, that jewelry is a lot of pressure on you. I asked the right questions. Thank you. Thank you. Next model praise hi. How are you hurrying from raven? Nice to meet you. May remember you. Me? Hi. Um so how long will you be modeling? About two and a half years. And what have you done? Commercial walk before? No, I have not commercial. So you have you haven't. I walked with the soft drink company or any contract with them? No, no soft drinks, but I did do she wants with captain morgan that is that's running now oh, no, that was about two years ago. Okay, what do you like to do on the weekends, but mainly watching movies? Rock climb? I played the piano every once in a while. Anything that involves me moving around. I don't really like to sit still. Do you like, um do you, like, are you into drinking soft drinks? Not too much just because of the sugar. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. That's actually, a very good question. You should ask, oh, do you like coke? Or do you like that? And whether they do or not, if the girls are coming in from the agency, they'll say, oh, he's a coca cola or don't they know this that's a listing for that, and they gonna say yes, I love, you know, but like he asked for I've been on castings for high paying jobs and they're they're going toe not maybe give the brand away right away, especially if it's the first casting they might say we're casting for international, international or national beverage. I have no idea what that beverage is. Maybe by the second casting, if I get a call back, they'll give it away. So for me, as a client, if she didn't know is for coca cola and I'm coming and no, I don't like coke I'm already thinking in my head I'm not sure if she's going to make the cut so yeah so next small don't please high eighty how are you? Good, good. Um have you seen how how long have you been moldering? I'm going about two years now. How do you like it? Love it your life? What kind of modeling? Um you've done before I've done a couple editorials mostly catalog any camacho walk or somewhere? Yeah, actually just finished up working with pepsi. Thank you very much. Thanks. She was my favorite girl. Loved her. I don't like that. She worked for pepsi, so she's not gonna work for us. Okay, next, mother, please have a nice to meet you. So how long you be modeling? I'm I'm smiling on enough for about two years now, okay? What kind of modern ing you did before? Um for modeling? I've done smiling for new for time. First, I just need to work on the portfolio and is well, so host both of us. Okay? Commercial work. No commercial work yet. So you don't have any contract with other soft soft drink company know nothing, okay, so what are your favorite things to do on the weekend? I'm on the weekend I do like to spend a lot of my family and I spent a lot of time looking at fashion magazines and looking to fashion that's been going on so I do a bit of shopping during my weekends like to relax more during the week is more busy times what do you do a favorite drink? Um it would be pepsi it's a very, very good it's definitely one of the more tastes here drinks out there. Okay, I hate pepsi so as as the photographer it is your job trying to ask questions to pull out personal and see issue I can give you personality as you're shooting to find out is she your casting for a breakfast beverage company? Does she have the energy to make me want to buy this product as well? Does she have it in her? So you should be asking a question you find down like way should within the weekend's. Great, because that tells me if she's into this lifestyle where she used to be up in around she just like seeing behind the couch and being a couch potato what is she doing? And can she promote this lifestyle that I'm trying to push make you a job? Easiest photographer tell me about yourself? Um well, I am in student government at my college so very involved in campus life um I also love to dance um it's I enjoy that a lot. I also enjoy fashion finding what new trends are going on and I love just the entertainment business in general whether it be event planning or being in a show or anything like that that's what I enjoy what kind of dance you into into hip hop choreography? Okay, all right, so for this commercial we want the girl to be really happy excitable can you show us a couple of dance moves that would express a sense of happiness? Sure. That's wonderful that's great, great. Thank you very much. Thank you. Thank you. That was good and having them just like that it's a great well on the casting you find that you have a girl in that point that might be contender pull it out see if there's something there because that's exactly what happens and then doing a break you can like say, wait a minute, hold on they will discuss what we like about that model. So you are running the casting? We're all here working together to make this client happy but we're all looking to you to run the casting thank you. We've seen all four girls I think there's one more one more rights to the next model that was fast sorry has changed to our next person and she changed wei should do something totally different type of I think I'll be kind of cool after before do that's a good question questions that have been there for a while so the sixteen questions cool eso louise henry has asked do you ask the age or never do you never have to do that and he's from outside of the u s so way don't ask the age we have an age range in the client's well the bookers have sent models in that age range so I'm giving them the bookers at the mali agency a range of what I want what want girls between the age of eighteen to thirty five whatever it is so listening girls that fit that criteria already I want to ask that age I don't want to know their age for say I don't want no they're real age because they're saying the girls that fit that category already if they look older younger now like overnight right for me and also to like I've never been asked my age because I could photograph older I could photograph younger that's what makes a great model so I'm sure as a team if you know I'm fitting that twenty five to thirty two range I should come in as a model I don't want to come in saying I'm twenty that it uh you know I wanted I want to be used so I don't want to throw that out there I think matthew said it's really great looking at a book and if a girl can look younger you know our older it's always a plus absolutely absolutely right nico ha has asked, um would you really make a model saying when they are really coming to shoot when they really come to photo shoot? Absolutely absolutely I would so you you just really want tio and she says that she can sing I could ask you to do to dance to sing of anything related to what she's doing it's going to show me possibly her personality I want if she shot if she's to shot a sing in front of me if she's told me she could sing, I might consider that as well, so I want to see how far I could push her when the casting to get what I want, especially for a money job. I've gone on castings and they've had a male model there they wanted me to touch his face pretend to kiss him and that's terrifying coming in but I had to be believable I had to come in with no expectation and you know he landed a kiss on me and if I were to back away and shy way already they know that I have issues working with another person, so I definitely think it can happen all that and more yes expects any expect anything to happen it can mean to add to it a certain degree to me about it was anything crazy what happened on the casting will be asked to do something crazy on casting. No, just that and being so been around and pretending to kiss someone. I did a commercial in israel where I had to make out with the male model all day, and I wasn't attracted to this model. For me, it would be like he looked like a friend. I would others no attraction, but I had to make it believable to the clients they were spending all this money on me on dive also got on a lot of tv auditions, or I've had to read a script right away on day would throw something at me, and I wasn't expecting it, and I had to be able to deliver right then and there in front of producers and show them that I would know how to read that particular script. So, you know, it happens also to sometimes they might have if you're going out for a beverage on alcohol, they might have you hold a glass a certain way or drink in a certain way, um, to see if you know how to work with props so it can happen.

This was more of a collaborative course with Matthew Jordan Smith and Yoanna House, and it is brilliant. I just finished watching this for a few hours straight. I own several Creative Live courses and this is definitely in my Top 3. Matthew's teaching style is so kind but to the point and informative. That's the kind of photographer I aim to be. He puts forth his knowledge here in a way that totally encouraged everyone involved. I loved Yoanna as well. She was very direct but friendly as well. I loved watching her direct the budding models and her experience showed quite well. This part is for John, the guy who commented on June 2017. I completely disagree with you that there were too many questions and that other people were talking much more than Matthew, and that that was a negative. Matthew's whole point was not just to get straight to shooting but to talk a bit about interacting with people in general. This wasn't just about technical stuff; this was about forming that connection between photographer and model/subject. This was as much psychology as it was about actual shooting, and I absolutely loved that. So I 100% strongly disagree with you as this is one of Creative Live's BEST courses that I've seen thus far. Thanks a ton, Matthew and Yoanna, and thanks so much again, Creative Live (I'm a huge fan of you guys!).
