How & Why to Upgrade

quality, quality, quality, quality. Why do I upgrade? Why do I want to use Phase one's off? We're gonna get into quality right now. I'm amazed every time I go back and I grab an old image and redevelop it in the new software, we talk about all these features and functions that the software is gonna have and what it's going to do. And it's got Oh, it's got this feature. I never That's a great new feature. What you don't think about is the improvement in algorithms, the improvement and color definition, the improvement in color gradation. And so I want you to take a look at these images. I have these from way back. This is my daughter when she was born. And if I look at the metadata Ah, we're talking about 2001. So 2001 this is my image from 2001. This was the color coming off the sensor, which was incredible in 2001. If I look at this, this is capture 18 But actually it was in 35 It wasn't even might even before 35 when I first used it was the version before we had numbers and then just...

developing in capturing nine capture 19 Here, take a look at the difference. The algorithms have improved so much, the color has improved so much what I'm able to do with flesh tones today, which which I wasn't available before. So why raw processing? Why raw work work low? Because when we had film, we had our negative over here, and that was our negative. And it had all that data and we could re scan it if I want to. I kept it pristine. But sometimes today we think I'll just convert to a J. Picked were fine. The software will improve over the years over the last what he's talking about. You're 14 years here and look what's happened just by re processing in the new software on what we could do with color, that's really important. I'm gonna go to this file that was throughout with phase one. This was shot with my like a and this is captured 16 So what I'm gonna do to show you here, I'm gonna control click the image, go new variant. So that's going to create a new variant here. Now, let me get rid of Jose's image. These air, not Jose. So I'm gonna go off of Facebook where I've got that watermark. There have been good friends. I want to know. Let's see, I get off it because what these do is preview that one way that's color profiles a preview with your watermark. Each session of these, if they're selected, is gonna preview that. So there here is my image. Capture capture 16 Here's why image and capture 19 This is the same wrong. But what's gone on has made a new variant. All it's done is now it's developing it in a new engine, the newer engine and creating a subset of file with sidecars. So one raw hasn't changed. Pristine on a side, a new set of sidecars. Those sidecars are now being processed in nine. Go to my highlight detail. Take a look at the great Asian and highlight detail, take a look at my brightness and a little bit of saturation. Take a look at what we could do in six and six dynamic range. So look what I did to improve dynamic range by doing nothing right. My like a improved over six years just by changing the side. I noticed that when I went to version nine recently cause I was a holdout. I didn't go nine just yet. I got went to 92 months ago, and when I finally went to nine and gave you the option you want upgraded to the nine engine on a few of them, I just clicked arbitrarily and immediately. My image is already better. Even with all my settings, I was like, Wow, smoother Wow, just by clicking, upgrade to the latest engine. That's true It. I don't have shots from 2001 but I do have some pretty old shots and yeah, they are better if I hold the same thing. Capture 19 and one Capture 16 or seven on another. I hold the shift button down while I do something. It would should do it for both of them. I bring my HDR in on. Then that's gonna make me a favor. Right line, toe break. Bring my HDR in and take a look at the detail. Now we did HDR, but also we're processing them. Hold the shift, DoubleClick and the detail. You should be able to see that at home, you should see the detail on the right and how much more detail. So that's an algorithm on edge definition that's improved, not in color. But look at the edge definition. Yes, we have a better HDR, but I just got a better edges on the same image on the same camera years later. Hey, I don't need to upgrade my camera. My software did it. I did. I say that. No, that's a great That's a great point. Everybody needs a like it. Got it. I love you. Can't take my life away. Don't even think about taking my like away. All right, warnings and bugs. Now I have to give. Have to give phase one some credit. I have to because they do something that absolutely nobody else does. And they tell you they tell you what's going on. They tell you everything that's going on. So I haven't seen a company out there that does this. If you are one of those guys who don't read directions, me too. Me too. You need to read directions. You know, these are directions, but since no other company does this, you don't know to go look, but the release notes of every single software matter and the relief Reese notes matter, because Phase one gives you information that nobody else is gonna give you. Here's the bug Fixes that 9 to 1 brought here. Here's what worked. And here's what doesn't work. Here's the new lenses that are supported, right? Here's the new camera. Hey, did you know the kid context? A $1000 a border? No, it didn't. Exactly. How did you know that? The Panasonic Slim achieve area 14 to 1 43.55 point six. A spherical power os is now supported. I do now. How about that, right? Yeah. So the new feature set The new camera supports the documentation about what batch does now. These release notes that happened with every single release. Grab them and read them. Very important for certain people. And if you're having a bug or do I even upgrade? Isn't can I upgrade? Should I look at what the upgrade is before? Look at the notes. Look, the notes before you upgrade. So we're gonna put a whiny post on Facebook that capture one work. That's how we solve things, known issues. I love it. They actually are telling you what the issues are today. So if you're under the No, we're working on it. We have your back. We're working on it. Years of the known issues. Nobody does this. Nobody s. So I've got to give them credit while I will yell at them a lot and hold them to the values that I think they should be held to. I've got to give him credit for the things they do do well, especially if you're someone who buys new camera's like your early adopter, your pre ordering You got the latest and greatest. You don't dump in your files and to capture one and they won't go in. Just look this up and no Oh, it's not supported yet. But it will be or something like that. Yeah, they did. They're good. They're good because it would six weeks, maybe maybe eight weeks. I mean, that's all we're usually waiting thes the cameras that are supported. I'm gonna go through this fast leaf, of course, on Mumia. But Sony's Here's all the Sony's that is supported. Here's all the cannons that air supported. Okay, let's keep on going. Here's the Nikon that have supported Likas. Who would you film? Part of me, Olympus is so we're talking about camera support. Four. Hundreds of different cameras are supported. Panasonic's Pentax Konica Minolta. Here's the lens profile. So there to profile each lens. Look at the distortion H. Let's give you a profile for those lenses, and here's the lenses that taking care of already. You'll see it recognize those lens in the automated data Metadata already going and correct that distortion that that for you. So it's all there. So these notes, I just have to bring them up. In the beginning, I find them very important. If you're having issues, go look at them before you register that. Before you download this offer, download the notes first and see. See if I should. I just get people your cell number. Thanks, Pat. Find that's better. Unfortunately, people do. That's okay. That's what we're here for, right? That's what separates us from the rest of people. All right, so importantly sense Nino brought it up since you know what number? Now we know not myself. Number, but we will go to the website. We, my company capped immigration. We We support this product extremely well. We know this product. I own the company. And this is This is how well I know it. You've got to know that I've got people in the company that know what's so much better than I do that are so much better than I here because they're working a bigger projects way. Don't want any office Anyway. Send him out of there. Hey, we get to send him San Francisco a week ago. Please go for San Francisco per week. All right, so we have a block, capture one pro. Go to it. I want you to see this is where face doesn't like us, actually, because we're going to go in and say, Look, guys, here's the beta. Don't don't don't upgrade yet. Here's the release and we've say yes, we're happy with nine to we approved in its released. So you'll be able to go into this and see if the latest version is approved by us. That's what they're not going to do. I don't want my customers calling, which they will. And so if I'm gonna be able to test that beta first, I find that it doesn't work with my OS. I'm gonna put it on the blawg and you'll know that we've got an issue first. Guys, take a look at it. Um, this might be something that you'll have a problem with. If you do upgrade like this, do not go to the data because it doesn't work on Sierra yet. So this, uh, this is what we found, Tested and approved. 9.3 years. El Capitan. We have a blawg just for it. Also very important things. Top 10 features of capture 19 All the videos of capture nine year here. So we focus on we focus on this and do this better than the amount. So use us if you want to sign up for the newsletter, which I I completely recommend. Newsletter. Sign up because we have a newsletter every month and will have capture one features two or three features each month on Capitol. You're saying on this blawg and other resources you have in your website you're saying phase sometimes from when you because you're honest at some, if something isn't quite working, you going to say, Hey, it's not quite working, but that makes you a great resource for the photographers instead of calling. You never asked me that. Could look at your block and go OK? Yeah, this and that. All I own caption aggression. Nobody told us. And so, yes, if there's issues that my customers are gonna have, we're gonna protect them from the issues. Not all manufacturers like that, but that's OK. That's not a problem, because I need to make sure the customers happy first. All right, get rid of some of the dull stuff I've gotten over some not dull of the Dalton. It's the important stuff. All right, all right. One thing that I do want because because sometimes you'll need to do it. Um, if you'll come to my website again to capture Immigration's website if you tied type in a new install and hopefully it's gonna work properly all our Internet here. If you actually go to Google and you go capture one uninstalled will be the 1st 3 hits on an assault capture one, because we always create a script to uninstall always really makes it easy for tech support. So easy for tech support. No, You know what this needs it Install Instead of walking you through the process of where all those little things aren't gonna stop. Run the script and you guys offer the scripts, obviously, just a. I think our competitors use a lot of the script as well. But that's OK. It's best for the customer. So if in case you need to know it uninstall, even Google it capture one and solid bring us to bring you to my website. But it go to our website. You're saying it's fairly technical, complicated. It's uninstalling any program these days as Roos is improved and get larger and larger and they go and hide things right, because let's go to our OS. If I go to my go right and I hit option, there's my library. They hide my user library. Now I've actually got to go to the go and hit option to find my use library. The OS is air designed to protect us from ourselves, but also to fool us. So yeah, it becomes it becomes difficult

Yes, per some other reviews this started slow. What turned me off was the sales spiel for the class. It also came across as a sales schtick for C1, which is ok given the presenter. Stuck with it (well most of it, had to step away at times) and found it useful. I've had my eye on C1 for a LONG time. I'm not a pro, but would consider myself a pretty serious amateur. I document old mining and narrow gauge steam engines, general travel and now do our product photography (started a new company, so all $ goes to that rather than C1, which I would LOVE to own after seeing C9). Went with Aperture back in the day because of its cataloging and price. Back then C1 didn't have cataloging, though it DID have a 2 tier price structure...(Phase WHY did ya'll do away with this?????). Back to the class. After lunch on the first day I think they found their stride. Second day, especially Nino in the afternoon was quite good. That was probably my fav session. Seemed like most questions came from the in-studio "captive" audience. Expected more from the web? Constructive feedback. 1) Could have condensed things down quite a bit. I liked the more casual approach it took later on first day and on the second day. Dave especially seemed more at ease. 2) Ya'll (Dave especially) seemed to have his topics scripted out. Given the two day nature of this, would have been nice to give the attendees an idea of agenda/timeslots for topics up front. If an agenda/timeline was presented...I totally missed it. But then, I couldn't back up or rewind the live stream when I had to step away several times... if I paused it jumped to the realtime stream :-( 3) C Lve was pushing the "free trial download"...isn't there already a trial download from Phase? What value are ya'll offering in this area above what they offer? I found this annoying, if there's an extended trial period or something through ya'll cool. If not...I'm back to the annoying aspect of it. 4) Nino, get a Cintiq :-) If C1 doesn't have a profile for Cintiq (I'm going to download the trial from Phase) Phase you need to add support for it. 5) Dave's material he presented should be in vids on his website to help him expand his C1 market..fantastic selling tool there Dave....or even better....embedded in the product itself (ala SilverFast). Phase, you listening? 6) Nino, given he's coming from a different angle, eg no skin in selling C1?, he could do a 3-5 hour intensive vid(s) and I'd pay something for that. YMMV but I liked his approach and presentation. Was disappointed no C1 on his YouTube :-( Would I pay 99.00 for this class? Honestly, no. We use 3D graphics (ZBrush) and CAD (Rhino) in our company and have been learning those over the last year. To compare. There is another tutorial company whose name I shall not mention (no, it does not start with an 'L') that specializes in vid classes for those and other 3D products. They structure their offerings on a AFFORDABLE monthly/6mos/yearly all-you-can-eat fee structure. Much more consumer friendly, and quite honestly their videos are very focused and about 4-6 hours per course. I don't see myself paying 99.00 much less 129.00 for just one course like this (especially with the sales spiel content) when other companies have a more customer friendly consumption model. A value for the $ thing. In the end I did learn some things, and I'm glad I watched what I could of it. And yeah, I'm pretty sure after this review I just got taken off the free C1 license contention list...but I'm just being honest...Dave, I will be ordering some of the LCC pocket accessories if I ever get C1...those were cool IMHO. C1 has come quite a ways. When I can, I'll add it to our software arsenal.

I have been a user of Capture One for a couple of years but have strugled to get my head around the way to use this software as my chosen raw converter, I love the improved quality that Capture One gives me but always seem to end up scratching my head and going back to Lightroom to save time. I haven't been able to watch the full presentation due to time difference, (I am in the U.K), and other commitments but I have learnt so much in the time I have spent watching that I can finally see me waving goodbye to Lightroom in the very near future. The presenters are excellent teachers, they are funny, engaging and thanks guys you really have made a p[ositive difference to how I interact with Capture One software.
