Sessions & Catalogs

I'm gonna throw a wrench that you immediately Because the most common question I get and where workshops is opened up capture one. And you know, I don't get a photo in it. I can't get my photos into it. That's the most common question. Like, how do I get a photo? How to get my photos into capture that direction you're going to now? Because that's a question I get most of the time. I closed it. After a couple of days, I couldn't get my files into it. Now, I'm not trying to say people, are you? No, no, no, no. So many places to go. Don't open that door. Do not open that door. How do I so, of course that's to me. This is the beauty of capture One. If if you think of capture one as if it were bridge. Okay. Just doing it right. As a member, you don't have to import when someone say, How do you import out of the export import export capture? One just sees the files. You don't have to import or export. I'm gonna go into my next right after this is sessions and catalogues love it. So We're goi...

ng to get into what a session is, what a catalogue is and why. But all of these are just folders. So I'm just looking at a folder called Overlay. I'm looking at a folder called Cannon L L C C. I haven't imported. They don't live inside a catalogue here I can couldn't control Click right? And I can look at this in my finder and these air just folders that live on in my folder system. So I'm just looking at the folder as if bridge was It looks at them. It goes in and creates the preview creates the sidecars. If you've done anything that's empty and then puts it, they're automatically you don't have to import. And so it's It's one of those things that that I'm confused by. Two. Could you just point the software added, If you know how to and it's there, is there now we're gonna get the catalogs and sessions, and I've been using this so long that catalogs isn't the way my brain works and we'll talk about catalogues. Richards, you get sessions over here, Uh, but but that's something that's a little bit different of importing and exporting When you open this software from the beginning, it asks you as your default. Are you with Sessions Person? Are you a catalogues person? And you'll either default in the sessions or catalogues right from the first time you open this software. Now, can you do it? Make a new session to make a new catalogue? Absolutely. You can come up here and file right. Let's go in to make sure we're here, right? We could come in here and we can do a new catalogue and new session right from the beginning. So just because of default into our catalogue user default into a session user doesn't mean you can't go back. But I'm a section user because it's always been sessions, and I think of a session as a job. I think recession as it were, the studio come into my studio and we would have a session, and that one thing exists all together and it stays together, and I archive it together and I keep it organized. It a session is not archival for all the images you ever shot altogether. That's what a catalogue is, whether you want to archive your image for all in one big group. That's your choice. But I'm gonna talk about my work flow here and as a session next. And compared to what? I'm gonna make sure that I come back to this because we haven't gone over that. Let's talk about sessions. First catalogue sense were there. All right, we're going to go in and open a session that I've done before. So if I go into open recent and I go into my cousin's wedding Gallagher wedding, we're gonna open a recent session and a session is a way to have a single job and have it all archived together for a single job. I really like keeping my job separate. But remember, I come from a commercial background and coming from a commercial background, I don't want toe archive Nikes with Adidas is shots to with this company shots and put them all together in one. Of course, I don't want to see that customer seeing them in my archive. I don't want to see who they used. I want to keep them separate. And as a wedding works, I want to keep this wedding and this day in this customer, separate from all the rest of them. So a session while I do file new session, it opens this way. And let's go ahead and zoom in. It opens with a new session here, and I can title it. Whatever. I want his birthday. Sweet old eso ninos burning time. Exactly. My wife has been 29 I think 12 times. Yeah. Yeah, I know that. Start having so much trouble when I get home. All right. Uh, location. And so the sessions going to my image files, we can make sure that I go to the right place. It defaults. And your pictures folder? No. When you open it for the first time, the location default pictures of you don't want them in your pictures. Put them somewhere else. I've got archive a second hard. I built into my laptop. That's just got my images on it, that I could have just images Only so many images don't want hard. Drive my operating system on the other. And that's where that's going. You could have a wedding template. So a wedding folders template. And that's all you need to do. Wedding folders, template. I've set it up and it will open a wedding folders template Or if you don't, you go to blank. It's gonna by default do a capture folder we're gonna tether into to capture or we're gonna import into what? Importing from cf card. It will do a selects so that you have all your selects in one Don't like it. Don't use it, but it makes it there. But importantly, your output for that session. Everything in output. All your Facebook photos, all your four by six is all your higher is tiffs. They're all going to go to an output for that job. It's not gonna be mixed in with all your others. And importantly, when I seen this so many times, they've got one big archive, one archive, right for all of their catalogue. And when the output there's all their files in the J, pegs are next to the tiffs are next of all by the name and it's not sorted and it's it's a mess. And so that What is it? My wife says O c p d that oh CPD and me goes Ah, no, they're not organized or not in a folder. So this keeps them all in the separate folders outputs all together for that one job. The trash for that one job is altogether. If you delete it by mistake, it hasn't deleted. It goes to the trash of that one job and automatically, the first shock comes up is Nina's birthday shop. As whatever you've called it, I'm actually going to make a wedding one so I can go on to make a template Weddings folder. Template hit. Okay, it's gonna make a new session for a wedding so that you're ready to import a wedding. So again, the wife, I learned her workflow, I learned how she separates things, how she organizes her wedding and how she organized her wedding is this way. She does a pre wedding folder, a ceremony folder, a portrait's folder, a details in a reception. That's how her brain works. That's how her jobs works, our weddings, how she keeps them separate. She knows that sometimes she's going to do the pre wedding and her assistant's gonna go over here and do this section over here so she can quickly import to separate folders because they came off the assistance card. So there's all sorts of ways that make this fast by having this set up. I did nothing Boom this wedding and set up a few people that this is Nino's birthday wedding together isn't actually said needles wedding. That sounds like a horrible day. Need just Nina's wedding. Sure about that. Okay, so it is autumn automatically set Your capture folder is whatever folder has the capture icon on it. So right now, if I would've tether the little capture icon says I'm gonna tether right into reception were if I were to import a card. It's going into reception. Know that I can come in here and grab this folder control click and set as my capture folder and change them, Kenyon, was the import change meant to capture? You can set. Set them. However you want control, click as a capture. Select output. Does your trash if you want to. But again, making a template If you're commercial shooter, right. I'm gonna get rid of this file New session. If your commercial shooter, by going me coming in here, make it large room knowing that I've got models, four models to shoot that day and I always shoot for models or I'm doing head shots that day and I would name my session. That date. I've got 10 headshots I'm doing every day on that day and adheres my head shots. And it automatically makes the 10 folders for my headshots and keeps him organized. What a nice way to make it faster again. What we said from the beginning, how much is my time worth? How much do I want to keep organized? And it plays to my personality, as you can tell, is keeping organized. And so that's why we need you. The yin and yang we need to The creative overture plays off from that really organized personality. So, as you can see, the pre wedding shots are here. But the ceremony shots are here. The portrait shots air here, you'll see. These are all d and G's importantly, right? This is my, my like, I love my like I love the green love You're like, Yes. Okay. Sorry. I apologize. And then I don't work for them, but they're certain cameras like that. That is this. This is a wedding shot with black. And right now, it's not that I This is my cousin I went into Did these as if that's a favor. Um, but that's the organization. So when it comes to sessions in that organization my capture folder, remember, If I go to Capture Folder, it's gonna goto Whatever folder has the capture icon on it. If I come up here and go details and I set the capture folder as the Details window. When I go to the Capture folder appear, it's going toe. Whatever was set as capture. That's what it said to. So it's a real weird, like Wait a second, my capture. Fold it. Remember, whatever is designated as your capture folder is what it's going to go to your select holders. Still, select your output folder in your trash, right? There's the trash folder there all their per wedding. If I go in and I say, you know, at the pre wedding, I really can't stand this file cause I didn't focus properly and delete it. It goes to my trash folder. It's there in my trash, but I have not deleted it. It's it's protected me from myself. Don't worry, don't worry, it's not gone. Okay, so that's the way sessions are set up. How are we doing that? They don't have times on that one, so the other way. This works. I'm gonna go into question. Yes, that question question Through the actual setting up of the sessions. Those five folders as compared to its a little. That's a little confusing. When you look at the dialogue you see captured delete. You know that stuff. How are you setting those up? Because there was no dialogue to set those up. Sure, E, however you want to. It's really Harvey wants you. So you say it is the template. Yeah, let's go in and make a new session. Let's go ahead and make a new session so you could go to make a new session That was blank. Right? And you could come in here to my capture folder and go in said it's finder and this is typically how it's done. You go and find her. And while we go and find her, we just make new folders in here. Right? New folder, new folder, new folder. And we can make new folders in here, right? And then title them once you title that folder as yada. All right. Sorry about that. Click on it. Hold it. Yada yada Right There is my my yada yada folder, So I would then come to my favorites can make my favorites as a yada yada in that one. So wherever that one waas let's go instead of doing it that way, control, click show and find her And there's my yada yada right? And so I could make that yada yada there And finder is my favorites and drag it in tow favorites or dragged into my albums and make it that way. So once I then have set this up either in the software or outside If I want to do it in the software I'm gonna capture folder I go New capture foot not smart Album control Click New Capture folder Would you like to make the other one of favorites say yes and call it Yata too. Night You can name them and put them there as your favorites. And then once you've got it set up the way you want to as a favorite, then you go in and save that as a template. Then, um, saving is a template. I gotta remember. Where do we save it? Is templates. Those pesky menus? Yeah, you're is the safest template. Uh, no, I get it. remember exactly where we're gonna say I saved myself. You're on your own clear menu. I didn't realize your session. I didn't know you could drag and drop the folders from the finder, whereas huge fashion show. All right, I'm gonna go back to you and how we save that template details, Because it's it's one of the men use that save as template. But once you set it up manually, then you find that buttons has save his template and it saves it. So I'm gonna find that in a second and say that is template. Thank you. Good question. And honestly, that's what I want, if you can. If you have a question that you haven't difficulty with Listen, I don't know what right now, we'll find out. We're gonna find out together, we'll find out. Samos template. It should hit that menu. Animal in theory. Yeah. Yes, Here it is. Thank you. Wait a second. Did you work for apple it? No, no, no, no. I remember. I love you. Okay. Perfect file. Save this template and look at that. That's so apple. Look, hangs and shows Steve Jobs had told them they learn something new every day. Awesome. So save a step it. So then how do we then get to it? Saves template. Call it the yada born template and save. And so again, that template goes to go Library applications port. All right, capture one into my templates and in my yard template. Okay, so next time I do it is there. So that's the same samples. Like it. I like it a lot. It's a It's a good idea for again speeding things up in your session. So sessions and setting up a template, thank you very much. And was that was that? Ah, softball that you're gonna throw out and then help me know. OK, I like it. Yes, card A wedding. And I've shot multiple different things on the CF card. Like you know, the details Portrait's we'll watch. How do why import that cf card in to capture one and separated into those folders? Take that file If click those files, drag it into portrait, OK, but so you imported altogether at first. So it's not gonna separated upon upon import, okay? Imported into one drag and it's gonna show up in portrait. Hey, do you like like a So That's a good question, but it's easy. It's really easy. It try it. Dragon Drop. Working So many parts of these menus, Really, that's just to me. It's Apple logical. That bull put an end drug. Drop it. It works. So try that. Multiple capture folders, cattle. Do you want to talk about? Since when I didn't talk about catalogs, you use Calix. Um, I've been using sessions lately to be I haven't, but But when I started in catalogues, I just noticed that they bog things down so fast on. And then I started separating by project as well. And that was huge for me. So But who could maybe benefit from a catalogue? All right. So, for example, let's say your ah stock shooter and you have your own pile of stock photography, right? So when a client calls, you get an email or something, that's that. I need couples in the park of multiracial, but what? You have your whole catalog there too quickly search. At least that's the light room philosophy of using a catalogue. So that's the only kind of user I think that one of the users that might use a kind of love but I'm a per job person as well. So when I have discovered sessions that changed my whole world. But what You can speak on catalogues. I think people want to know about that. What do you think? I know, You know you don't prefer them. OK, but right. So I have to go from from experience. And since I have been using capture one since the beginning, it's this light room versus capture one and whose whose dad is bigger than whose dad, right? I've got a bigger stick than your stick, and they're fighting after each other. And so there was no such thing as catalogs and and phase one and there were clothes, but they thought, Well, it, like I have been using it. And they really everyone really likes catalogues. The green need to have it. So I think version five is when cattle five or six is when catalogues came out and when it did come out, um, it wasn't stable, there was no stable. And I'm talking about one of the most stable platforms I've ever used, if not the right. And so for capture one not to be stable. It was Oh, my God, this this isn't usable. And it really that whole version that it came out, it still wasn't stable. And so it's been progressing and it's been growing, which is great through here. But I'm doing tech support for my clients. And when they have a catalog where the images are embedded into the catalogue and then you have a corruption of that catalogue, those images are stuck in a corrupted catalogue. So anyone that wants to keep images inside embedded into a catalogue, it blew me away. Why you do it? And when I had for the first time in my career, ever a client lose a job because of a corrupted catalogue, it pushed me away from catalogues so much at that time and some of everything. So head, Yeah, and literally we know that if you're using sessions and that images captured or important, you haven't lost it. Don't worry about it. You're you're looking at the wrong folder. Those files air there were gonna be able to get them back for you. We'll save them. Don't I have I can assure my clients, no problem. But when we actually then I mean you lose a job that you might have lost a client for good course. And so I stopped. I stopped us up, which up supporting and when. While they are stable today, I've just got such a bad taste. One month, I'll be honest. I still think that cause I was using catalogues as recently as earlier this year and does not take a lot of files in there to start really bogging it down in catalogues. So I don't know the technical reason for that, but I know that when I go by sessions, everything's last. So I stopped when I stopped using them. We stopped supporting them and we just tell our customers not to. And if you do will help you through it, We actually we actually made a script. We made a script that we give those customers that have a corrupted, ah catalogue that's allows them to get into that counter again. Pull that draws back out all your settings, what else is gone? But we'll salvage the Ross

Yes, per some other reviews this started slow. What turned me off was the sales spiel for the class. It also came across as a sales schtick for C1, which is ok given the presenter. Stuck with it (well most of it, had to step away at times) and found it useful. I've had my eye on C1 for a LONG time. I'm not a pro, but would consider myself a pretty serious amateur. I document old mining and narrow gauge steam engines, general travel and now do our product photography (started a new company, so all $ goes to that rather than C1, which I would LOVE to own after seeing C9). Went with Aperture back in the day because of its cataloging and price. Back then C1 didn't have cataloging, though it DID have a 2 tier price structure...(Phase WHY did ya'll do away with this?????). Back to the class. After lunch on the first day I think they found their stride. Second day, especially Nino in the afternoon was quite good. That was probably my fav session. Seemed like most questions came from the in-studio "captive" audience. Expected more from the web? Constructive feedback. 1) Could have condensed things down quite a bit. I liked the more casual approach it took later on first day and on the second day. Dave especially seemed more at ease. 2) Ya'll (Dave especially) seemed to have his topics scripted out. Given the two day nature of this, would have been nice to give the attendees an idea of agenda/timeslots for topics up front. If an agenda/timeline was presented...I totally missed it. But then, I couldn't back up or rewind the live stream when I had to step away several times... if I paused it jumped to the realtime stream :-( 3) C Lve was pushing the "free trial download"...isn't there already a trial download from Phase? What value are ya'll offering in this area above what they offer? I found this annoying, if there's an extended trial period or something through ya'll cool. If not...I'm back to the annoying aspect of it. 4) Nino, get a Cintiq :-) If C1 doesn't have a profile for Cintiq (I'm going to download the trial from Phase) Phase you need to add support for it. 5) Dave's material he presented should be in vids on his website to help him expand his C1 market..fantastic selling tool there Dave....or even better....embedded in the product itself (ala SilverFast). Phase, you listening? 6) Nino, given he's coming from a different angle, eg no skin in selling C1?, he could do a 3-5 hour intensive vid(s) and I'd pay something for that. YMMV but I liked his approach and presentation. Was disappointed no C1 on his YouTube :-( Would I pay 99.00 for this class? Honestly, no. We use 3D graphics (ZBrush) and CAD (Rhino) in our company and have been learning those over the last year. To compare. There is another tutorial company whose name I shall not mention (no, it does not start with an 'L') that specializes in vid classes for those and other 3D products. They structure their offerings on a AFFORDABLE monthly/6mos/yearly all-you-can-eat fee structure. Much more consumer friendly, and quite honestly their videos are very focused and about 4-6 hours per course. I don't see myself paying 99.00 much less 129.00 for just one course like this (especially with the sales spiel content) when other companies have a more customer friendly consumption model. A value for the $ thing. In the end I did learn some things, and I'm glad I watched what I could of it. And yeah, I'm pretty sure after this review I just got taken off the free C1 license contention list...but I'm just being honest...Dave, I will be ordering some of the LCC pocket accessories if I ever get C1...those were cool IMHO. C1 has come quite a ways. When I can, I'll add it to our software arsenal.

I have been a user of Capture One for a couple of years but have strugled to get my head around the way to use this software as my chosen raw converter, I love the improved quality that Capture One gives me but always seem to end up scratching my head and going back to Lightroom to save time. I haven't been able to watch the full presentation due to time difference, (I am in the U.K), and other commitments but I have learnt so much in the time I have spent watching that I can finally see me waving goodbye to Lightroom in the very near future. The presenters are excellent teachers, they are funny, engaging and thanks guys you really have made a p[ositive difference to how I interact with Capture One software.
