Great portraits are not accidental.

They are crafted through intention, direction, and a clear understanding of how light, expression, and composition work together to create emotion in a single frame.

In this workshop, commercial photographer James Patrick breaks down his approach to creating bold, compelling portraits that stand out in editorial and commercial spaces. Drawing from a career that includes more than 800 magazine covers and thousands of published images, James will share the techniques he uses to craft portraits that immediately capture attention.

You’ll learn how to shape light for drama and depth, how to build compositions that guide the viewer’s eye, and how to direct subjects so their expressions feel authentic and powerful. James will also explore how creative elements like styling, environment, and mood can elevate a simple portrait into something memorable.
