To help get ready for our huge upcoming annual event, Photo Week 2015, we’re highlighting some of our favorite instructors who are part of the event.

We’re going to be sharing with you, everything from their tips and advice on how to make it in the photography business, how to frame perfect shots within their domains, how to create your unique style, and much more over the coming weeks.

Today, I had the awesome opportunity to chat with Julia Kelleher, a seasoned CreativeLive instructor and professional photographer with an incredible business she’s built from the ground up.

Julia is a portrait photographer that specializes in newborn, family, and baby photography. Developing a very unique, artistic style over the years featuring organic textures, creative props, and thoughtful placement has helped Julia to truly standout in the world of portrait photography.

Q. Tell me about the moment when you knew you made it as a photographer.

Julia: “As far as technical ability? That was when I passed my Certified Professional Photographer exam and completed the portfolio review. Having your peers evaluate your work and tell you it’s “professional”quality really makes you believe in yourself. As far as my business goes? I didn’t really feel like I had “made it” until I paid myself my first paycheck. It was only $500 for a two week period, but I was like wow, I am finally paying myself!”

Q. How did you develop your unique, artistic approach to photographing babies, especially newborns?

Julia: “I really wanted to try and stand out from the sea of newborn photographers out there. I knew I needed to take my photography to the next level by turning it into a form of art – rather than just another image.”

“I’ve always loved oil painting and fantasy fairy tales, so it was natural to learn to use Corel Painter and start compositing my work. Color-wise, neutral is my LOVE! I’ve always loved home decorating magazines and antique shopping and HGTV, so I get a lot of inspiration for my day to day work from those sources.”

Q. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Julia: “Know and live by the 80/20 rule. This industry is 80% business and 20% art. Learn how to run a business.”

“80% of your revenue comes from 20% of your clients. Repeat customers are gold, so take care of them! Service industries are 80% customer appreciation and 20% product. So, make sure your customers service is stellar.”

Here’s another little-known-fact about Julia, she’s a former competitive ice dancer! She and her partner won the US National Adult Championships in 2007.
