NEVER ever touch a model. I question some of his settings also.

  • Z. Jan 7, 2022

Ooh er! I think touching the model is a BIG no-no! Stroking her hair back from her eyes (several times) - without even asking permission. Sorry - but that's just wrong!

  • Taras O. Nov 1, 2021

He is a good teacher: his speech keeps you focused and the tips are great but I found his photography, in this class, to be quite mediocre: a lot of bad cropping, a lot of just tight headshots where he missed a lot of opportunities to showcase more of the environment (the video operator did a better job), a lot of spray and pray shots. And finally even though the tips and tricks to get the emotion out of the model were great they didn't really work in practice (imho). Not a bad class but didn't get much out of it.

The first few lessons were a little difficult for me to connect with, but as they continued, I truly enjoyed the lessons and shoots. By the end of the lessons, I was hoping that Nigel would have added a few more shoots. His method is fantastic! I will definitely watch this lesson again. Thank you!

I think this is a great class for a photographer who is interested in fashion and editorial work. Nigel shows you what it's like behind the scenes and how he invokes the looks, stances, and poses from his models to get the story of his images. This class isn't about the why's and how's of what camera and strobe settings he uses on set. He does show you the different gels, reflectors, and strobes utilized but really just plants a seed so you can explore on your own. He mentions that it's important for the photographer to own their style and lighting. I love how Nigel shares how he creates the environment for a story. For editorial work, I feel one of the most important elements of a shoot is the experience you create for your model. It is the magic ingredient for capturing images with impact.

I'm surprised at the number of negatives posted but then not. Most CL viewers are used to watching a classroom scenario. Nigel is bringing his experience as a model, photog, on-stage an on shoot personality to a set as class.you are with him and his 1st AP as if you are their 2nd. Highly recommend the course and bundle to see a photographer "working"

So happy that I bought this class! Even after all his years doing it, his passion for photography is contagious. Very inspiring and packed full of great info.

  • Rick L. Sep 23, 2019

The feeling of this class is one of the Joy of the Why we do this. His excitement is perhaps the best lesson. Talking through the working with the models was VERY instructive. Not an overblown, pretentious, too techie, I am impressing you with me, type of class. Loved it!

  • Philipp . Sep 23, 2019

A short course, that may not seem like much. But for me, it was exactly what I needed at the moment. It may well change my approach to people photography. Little but possibly life-changing lessons!

  • U. Sep 23, 2019

Fantastic! If you're already shooting at a high level and want to take it to the next gear, this class is for you. Most photographers shoot 'technical shots' and are completely unable to capture the storytelling, emotional shot that separates people like Nigel Barker from the rest. In this class, you really get to see some of his psychological techniques employed and it's not until the last lesson that you get to see some of the technical parts explained. Really great class - might be over the head of some though because of the artistic process involved.

  • Martin G. May 25, 2019

Very interesting having a glimpse of Nigels techniques, approach, career, way of thinking and passion.

  • Margaret L. Oct 25, 2018

Nigel is a wonderfully engaging instructor. I like that he walks his students through his photoshoots. The set ups. How to interact with the models. Even though there are a couple of genres I'm most active in, I appreciate that Nigel says that you can have different photographic interests, so long as you brand yourself properly. I like taking photos of lots of things, although my outdoor photos generate the most interest. I highly recommend all of Nigel's classes.

  • Margaret L. Oct 23, 2018

I prefer natural light, but want to learn more about studio light. Nigel is an excellent instructor, and photographer. He can explain lighting concepts in easy to understand steps. He also gives plenty of excellent and useful tips.

  • Margaret L. Oct 23, 2018

Nigel is inspirational. I absolutely enjoy watching his photographic process, especially the post-process where he and Toby explained how they subtly edited the photos. It gave me food for thought when editing my own photos.

  • Martin G. Sep 19, 2018

You can't help but be drawn into this class. Nigel is such an engaging teacher and very personable. The parts on self promotion and marketing were gems! It's interesting how many times I've heard these same things, but his approach really made it sink in. Totally worth the investment in the course.

  • Nathan R. Sep 12, 2018

Since I am a professional fashion photographer, I am normally concerned about buying tutorials because a lot of the time they are for beginner photographers. However, this class is perfect!!! Nigel does a great job making this class fit to anyones skill level. I cannot recommend this class enough!!!

  • Michael S. Jul 22, 2018

This is one of my favorite Creative Live classes so far. The storytelling and human interaction parts were my favorites! The ability for Nigel to get such amazing expressions in such a brief time shooting was amazing. Everything he demonstrated seemed almost effortless, and all without a shred of ego. Great class!

  • Stefan L. Jul 11, 2018

Nigel is an excellent teacher. He always explains everything he does which in turn helps you understand why he's doing it. Short but effective course for someone looking to learn how to capture people and get comfortable with shooting them.

  • Stefan L. Jul 11, 2018

Simple class about storytelling a shoot. Nigel goes through the process and explains everything he does. Nigel is excellent at breaking everything down step by step. Another course by Nigel called "The Business of Photography" covers the same material but goes way more in depth. Personally didn't learn much from this course but was enjoyable to watch a professional work regardless.

  • Stefan L. Jul 10, 2018

Nigel is an excellent teacher! Gets straight to the point, very thorough with his teaching and his explanations. On the business side he talks about his own successes and failures and gives you examples of how to create marketing opportunities for yourself. On the photoshoot side he explains all his setups, why he executes things a certain way, his interactions with his subjects and the photographs he's trying to create. Probably one of the best CL courses I've watched!

  • milan S. Jul 9, 2018

Nigel is a good communicator and excellent photographer. However, you won't learn too much from this class. It is a Behind The Scene footage showing Nigel at work. That's all. Nigel doesn't measure ambient and artificial light, and won't tell you the light values you need to achieve the desired effect. Recommend to those who look for motivational support; certainly do not recommend to those who look for technical knowledge. For that reason, I feel like the tutorial is a bit overpriced. Thank you

  • mami V. Jul 8, 2018

He said he was not a teacher but I beg to differ...GREAT teacher! He makes it look easy :-)

  • Zach W. Jul 2, 2018

This class is PACKED with useable info and Nigel has a really easy to understand and engaging way of teaching it. I will watch this many more times. Great Class!!

  • Creative Live Student . Jun 20, 2018

Nigel brilliantly demonstrates how to connect soul to soul. He uses his finely tuned empathic gifts and transforms them into art. This class will help you relax, trust and find what is real and honest in your subject. I love his flow and intuitive approach to creating a narrative with passion and soul. I want all of his classes in my library, he's just that amazing.

  • C. Jun 12, 2018

The best class I have seen so far. Nigel is simply amazing.
