Learn the Essentials Of Graphic Design
You don’t need to have a background in fine arts or be an Adobe InDesign whiz to create compelling designs. In this class, Timothy Samara takes you back to the fundamentals of graphic design—the same principles he has consistently returned to in his 25-year career.
Through real-world projects, you’ll learn the basics of:
Most unique about Timothy’s class is his demonstration of how design theory manifests in actual projects; he cracks open his professional portfolio and takes you into the world of how real designers work. With an extensive career behind him, Timothy’s design services have spanned from web design to print media, to interface design, and to building brand identity. By walking through Timothy’s creative process, you not only see how design elements interact and impact an overall product, but you get a rare view of the problem-solving graphic designers do and the decisions they make. What rules exist and when are they broken? How do you juggle meticulous research vs. spontaneity?
Whether you want to design a poster, flyer, or logo—this class will give you the insights you need to design with confidence. Welcome to the art and science of graphic design.
This class is designed for beginner and intermediate graphic designers as well as more experienced designers looking for a brush-up on design principles, career-changers, marketing team members, and anyone interested in graphic design fundamentals.

Helpful information, however says "um/uh" waaaay too much, which gets difficult to listen to.
Just loved it!! Great intro with great examples!
A great start to the journey! Loved being able to see the work process of different types of work spaces.
More of a seminar or s quick workshop than an actual class. I did enjoy it and did get some great information out it.
Helpful balance of fundamentals and detailed case studies.
I recommend this teacher and course over other graphic design courses on creativelive. He's clearly passionate about graphic design. He clearly knows his stuff and more importantly knows how to teach it well. I would look past his speech quirks and focus on the wealth of knowledge and experience he is delivering to you.
I thought the information was well presented and relevant. I’m researching graphic design as a possible career change- this gave me a great understanding of the fundamentals. If you are new to graphic design it is a great course.
this is an outstanding insight into what it takes to work on the field of graphic design, not just for the profitability of it but for the sake of applying fundamental notions of visual communication, connecting the end (the actual design for a client) with the means (the tools you gotta make use of as a designer). it is not a class with exercises, but rather a selection of key notions and examples of a well versed designer. it is also not a quick guide of graphic design but rather an immersive talk for those who would like to understand what really goes on in the backstage of it.
This course is excellent. As some other reviewers noted, the speaker had a lot of ums at the beginning but he clearly knows his stuff. As the course progresses his passion comes through. I like how we walks through various projects he's done and describes what his process was. I will look for other courses by him.
this was an amazing
This is a fantastic course. The instructor is well-versed in the topics covered. His immense experience shows in the examples he gives.
I have literally been looking for this kind of information for years! I loved every moment of this course. It was magnificently presented, what a gift to be able to share in the creators every decision, to see hisbworld view. So valuable. Thank you.
Very great explanation of how Graphic Designers Think & Work, I really appreciate the content that was in this class. Please don't let bad reviews of the "uh" keep you from watching the video, once he gets settled into the class discussion, it wasn't an issue at all. Some people are too shallow to overlook a small issue and very rude with their reviews. Thanks Timothy for your class!!
This is a really excellent introduction and overview of graphic design that covers a number of phases. It is quite detailed and inspirational. I got a great deal from watching it as a complete novice in graphic design. I will likely watch portions of it again as I embark on graphic design projects.
Understanding how he thought about the design process, and his iterative approach was really invaluable. The historical section also provided useful context - recommended.
Good to get an insight into the creative process. Wish that Lesson 17 didn't consist mainly of a slide-show within a slide-show. Its irrelevance wasn't clear.
Excellent course! Timothy takes us thru his processes of his clients professional projects in a very detailed way. Very good way to learn by seeing his design process and understanding his rational and how to build a working relationship with clientele.
Here's an idea: just edit the audio and take out all the "uhs" in this course. The fact there are so many is truly distracting. Editing the audio would not only be helpful to those who watch, and listen, to the course, but it would also present Mr. Samara in a much better light as a presenter. Even though he may be quite knowledgeable about the issue, I can't see myself purchasing another class of his. And that is not good for me, is not good for him and certainly not good for Creative Live. Just a thought.
I liked this class a lot. It really starts getting interesting around lesson nine. As an expert graphic designer, he explains his thought processes and the research he does when approaching a design project, which I found fascinating and very inspiring.
I appreciate Timothy's explanation of his process and iteration. Not many people can or will discuss this part of the design process. I have been a fan of his books for years.
This was a good, general, "big picture" overview of graphic design. His explanations of how he goes about creating lend a lot of insight into the process.
Very thorough, and super helpful going through his entire creative process.
Wonderful class! I loved getting the info as to the creative process. Great!
I love this class, clear and precise information with very interesting examples. I have worked as a graphic designer for 6 years but have no design eduction, so at times I feel like there is these gaps of design-knowlegde in my decisions, this was the perfect filler of these gaps.
very informative indeed. For one to understand modern graphic design it is very interesting to know how it has evolved to connect the dots..
