Great photographs don't simply happen because a subject knows how to pose. They happen because the photographer knows how to direct the person in front of the camera. In this class, James Patrick breaks down the art and psychology of directing subjects to create authentic emotion, compelling expression, natural movement, and stronger visual storytelling. From nervous first-time subjects and camera-shy professionals to experienced models, photographers will learn how to communicate effectively, use prompts instead of rigid posing, direct body language and movement, and create genuine connection between subject, camera, and environment. Through practical demonstrations and real-world techniques, this class teaches photographers how to move beyond simply telling people where to stand and instead create photographs that actually feel like something.
This class includes a dedicated 30 minutes of Q&A directly with James Patrick.
