Fantastic class! Very thorough, well organized, and easy to understand. This was exactly what I needed. I feel much more confident getting started in large format. Highly recommend!
-
Shooting medium format since the 70’s on Whidbey Isand. Recently bought a 4x5. This class helped me clarify all the little things needed to get going. Well presented. Thanks
-
Very detailed Large format Course. Learnt a lot. Great job Daniel. Would love see in the future an in depth course building on this but for studio portraits and camera movements for portraits in different situations explaining why. Happy i purchased this.
-
Love Sandra's teaching style! I've been shooting film for 5 years now just as a hobby, but this showed me more of the technical aspects I haven't learned. A great intro for someone who hasn't picked up a camera before. If you have been shooting for a while, you might be a little disappointed as this is a really broad stroke overview, but I'm excited to check out her other more in depth classes.
-
Again another excellent course. I had some understanding of light, but this course brought it all together. I now have new ideas of how to shoot with strobes and, in particular, using just one.
-
Finally a film course that explains everything in detail and is easy to understand. I thoroughly enjoyed this course and felt that I learned so much. Thank you,
-
Clear and basic ….. super easy to digest and begin applying to your every day photography experience!
-
I enjoyed this course. Friendly and non technical but telling you what you need to know about starting out in film. I hadn't shot film for 20+ years but recently got back into it and this is a nice refresher telling you the basics that you need to know , especially regarding metering (and that I had never been told). thanks.

Loved this class! I believe I've learned the beginnings of film photography, and I can't wait to get started. I just ordered a used film camera and with the information Sandra has taught, I feel very confident in my abilities to use what I've learned. I've also taken her film photography and strobe (lighting) class, and learned so many valuable tools there. Great teacher!

I'm surprised by some of the negative reviews on this course. I think Daniel did a great job presenting what is, ostensibly, an entry-level course on large format photography. I have shot LF photography for several years about a decade ago with a speed graphic but need to do a project with a monorail camera for some architecture (large enlargements) and wanted to get up to speed on the movements, swings, tilts, etc. I ended up watching the whole thing since I've been digital over the past decade since going pro. He was direct, to the point, no 'ummms and ahhhs' and had great insight. Large format photography takes some learning of the camera movements but it is such a niche that I am not surprised it is covered as a basic intro course. The real learning happens during your mistakes with this genre. Wait until you see your negatives, enlargements and scans!
-
This course was incredible. Straightforward, clear. I'm so excited to get started on my film journey.
-
I found the class very informative. My only negative is the same I have with many photo classes is an assumed knowledge of Photoshop. I couldn't follow any of the image editing as I have never used the program.
-
This class is a gem; packed with a lot of practical information balanced with just enough theory for most folks to understand the whys and wherefores without overkill.
-
It's immediately clear that Daniel has a deep understanding of both the history and the chemistry of film photography. This is important because it allows him to not just repeat advice (expose for the shadows, f8 and be there) but explain _why_ you would want to follow that advice and when you shouldn't. This prevents cargo culting, which unfortunately is very easy to fall into either whether you're beginner or advanced. While focused on b+w, he touches enough on general film knowledge that someone who plans to primarily shoot color film will still find the class useful.
-
This course is a no brainer. My medium format film costs me $2.50 for every shot. You don't have to mess up exposure on too many shots to pay for both these courses. That alone is worth the cost. Her metering instruction is priceless. But she has done test shots again that would cost $2.50 each for you to do, lays out the film stocks and shows them to you. How much would that testing cost. And she teaches how to select and work with a lab to get consistent results including instruction to them and types of scanners.

Great class!! It's jam packed with usable information for anyone wanting to shoot, process, and print black and white images. There is so much detail presented in this class, I can practically guarantee you'll come back to it again and again. I successfully used this class to capture b/w photographs, process the negatives, capture them digitally, and finally, produce beautiful prints that I'm proud to show my friends and clients. This may well be one of the best classes on all of CreativeLive. Highly recommended!
-
Excellent class! Very well taught and I think I finally understand the Zone System. So much information packed into this that I have watched it over and over again, and will probably be referring back to individual sections as a refresher down the road. This has given me the push to bite the bullet on doing some film development at home and should be getting my shipment of black & white chemistry soon!
-
I just got into film photography and I found this course to be perfect to setting the mood, for understanding the main differences between film and digital, between black and white and colour, for understanding the basics of under/over exposure and metering light. I strongly recommend and look forward to apply what I've learned.
-
this class is great! love it!
-
I am not new to film, but I was searching for a refresher course from another photographer's experience and perspective on shooting analogue. I highly recommend this course to anyone looking for an intro-to intermediate level of knowledge about film, the Zone System, scanning negatives, shooting B&W film options, processing film, a survey of alternative processes, and much more. Daniel Gregory is not only extremely knowledgable, but he is a dynamic presenter with no fluff. hank you Creative Live for this production.

Sandra is a gifted teacher. She is so passionate and inspiring. She has opened a new door to me in my photography. I am very happy to be taking the journey that she started me on.
-
Wow! with a lot of online stuff out there one can become rather overcome with too much information, however, the way Sandra presents her courses is just perfect! Her honest and simple and easy to understand approach was just what I needed. Not once did I think she was just going through the motions, she really loves what she does and it shows. To be able to rewatch and rewatch was also a key for me. Since I have dyslexia I have to take things one half step at a. time. After completion of the class I had a new found confidence when using strobes. A must have.
-
Sandra is amazing! Her knowledge and passion for film photography paired with her background in teaching make taking this class or any other offered from Sandra a no-brainer!
-
Sandra is such a wonderful teacher. Knowing the foundations of shooting with strobes and film, gives me the creative freedom to create the images I want.
-
Do you own a film camera? Then you NEED this class. I knew I *kind of* wanted to try shooting with a strobe, so I bought this class as some encouragement. But honestly, I half expected to do the class and not actually buy the strobe (because strobes are scary!). But as soon as I finished this class I IMMEDIATELY bought a strobe, umbrella modifier, a backdrop, and seamless paper (in Storm Grey because I basically want to be Sandra.) I felt so empowered to shoot with strobes and film and suddenly what had seemed terrifying now seemed doable. My very first test roll turned out great after following Sandra's easy tips. Now that we're in the winter months, I can shoot indoors with my film camera and strobe! Thank you, Sandra, for so generously sharing your knowledge with us and for being such a great teacher! And to anyone even remotely considering this class, DO IT. There's no way you'll regret it.
