  • This class is a very basic class on making your first quilt out of square blocks. And on tieing a quilt. It is good on that level. She didn't go into much detail about how to work with different fabrics, advantages and disadvantages and different applications for say using jeans vs. linens vs. cotton. Or how to combine them so it does work. I did like that she wasn't from the quilting police and really encouraged us to try things. And to get stuff from Thrift stores, yards sales, etc.

  • I have been sewing for about 55 years and have made a few quilts. This class was better than I expected, in that it got me thinking about how I can use fabric scraps, fabric from my stash, and designer swatches I got from Fabmo in Sunnyvale!! The teacher had good ideas that you may not find in more traditional quilting classes. So not so perfectionistic and limiting. GO for it!

  • So good I bought the book.

  • I came across this video a couple years ago and have been wanting to try it. The instructions and technique were very clear. We're going to include an eight year old in the project so it will be fun to see how creative she will get!

  • Kaari is such a great teacher! She outlines the basic process and steps in the indigo dye process, and encourages experimentation. I enjoyed hearing the traditional terminology, and learning more about how indigo dye interacts with different types of fabrics. Kaari provides lots of tips for adapting your process for different materials, so you always get a deep, rich blue dye. It really got me brainstorming: I started seeing all sorts of things around my house as potential resists for my dye projects! I love that indigo dye projects turn out different every time, and that this should be celebrated! As Kaari mentions, indigo dye projects have a wabi sabi aesthetic, and there really are no mistakes.

  • I thought Cheryl was a very good teacher. I had many reservations about such a "free style" methods but have to say I now sold and ready to start my first Improve quilt. Cheryl's green quilt is marvelous!

  • I'm a self taught sewer. I've been sewing for years and wanted to try quilting. A family member asked me to make some memory quilts for her siblings, with their father's t-shirts who recently passed away. I of course made them before I saw this course available. I quilted the top & batting together (stitch in the ditch style) then used a minky back that I wrapped around the sides as it's binding. Now that I've seen this entire workshop, I realized I should have used a few more techniques to make it more stable to the backing. I learned a lot of things in this workshop! I would highly recommend this to others interested in quilting. I didn't find the camera angles annoying at all. I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and look forward to making even more quilts! Thank you!

  • Another great class. I love the approach that encourages spontaneity and decision-making throughout the process! I was not at all put off by Malka's speaking style -- I found her informative, articulate, thoughtful and funny. I would, however, have appreciated much less time watching her sew, although I realize she likely did that in this class to allow her in-person students to have time as well. A bit tedious, however, when it's not live or you're not sewing along. I loved the idea from another reviewer to have samples of Malka's quilts hanging in the studio throughout all the sessions so we could refer to a finished piece that demonstrated the skill she was teaching. I would recommend this course to anyone who loves quilting or wants to learn.

  • As an occasional quilter but more often a painter, I very much enjoyed this class, especially Cheryl's in-depth and thoughtful explanations of the hows and the whys of decision-making and play with all the elements of making quilts this way. One thing that was a bit off-putting, and I hesitate to bring it up because it's really not a criticism, is that Cheryl's teaching style involves using the word "right?" a lot, and she seems to be asking her students questions all the time, or asking their permission. For instance, saying "I do it this way?" sounds like a plea for agreement rather than a description. Small thing, though, in the overall scheme of things. She has tons of experience that she generously shares with students, and that is much appreciated. I would recommend this class to experienced and beginner quilters, and artists!

  • I've already made a quilt top with low volume fabrics. You really changed my idea that quilts had to have a ton of color. I want to try using low volume for background fabric next. Thanks for such a fun class.

  • I loved your class. I can't wait to try this method. Thanks.

  • I found this class and this art form on a whim late at night and it has been such a fun project! I got the kit from French General and followed along with the videos and it couldn't have been easier. Everything is explained and demonstrated clearly and I can't wait to start the Intermediate class.

  • I have taken all four of Cheryl's classes and she is an excellent instructor. Amazing. She is clear, engaging, non-judgmental, informative and has a ton of quality suggestions. Can't say enough about her! I hope that she does more courses in the future. Thanks very much, Cheryl and Creative Live. Very inspiring.

  • Great class. Cheryl is a very capable designer. quilter and teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed (and benefited from) the emphasis on design in this class, where Cheryl presents how to achieve balance in improv quilting design making best use of fabrics. I like that she covers using low volume fabrics. I'm very impressed with this class.

  • Cheryl is an excellent instructor. Great clear explanations and demonstrations throughout the workshop. I also love her humor and non-judgmental approach. I very much appreciated her "value" explanation, since this can be very confusing. Cheryl also provided great tips and suggestions. This was a great experience for me. I signed up for all of her workshops and look forward to each of them. Thanks very much.

  • Takes a bit to catch on as the progression develops from monochromatic, through the light, dark and medium values to backgrounds but then the click happens and wow! I also have gotten a much better understanding of value which is my own personal nemesis. I'm excited to play.

  • I find the class very inspiring...love Cheryl's fun way to teach... Have learnt a lot and am now looking forward to sew... What I don't like is that there are few close ups, and when they are they not always match of what Cheryl speaks of. Also when showing the text signs ...Cheryl,demonstrates something but you can't see it because all you see is the sign. And in one of the lessons Cheryl demonstrates on the design wall..but the camera isn't focusing on that...so there has to be better timing ...

  • So I've just watched this whole course in two evenings, and can say I got my money's worth. Cheryl is engaging, experienced and reassuring, and has enough information and samples to offer to make things interesting for those not sewing along in the moment. I do not have the opportunity to attend classes, so seeing others sew with shared intent is new for me; sometimes having only a teacher's example leaves more room for my creativity, but this "bee" atmosphere prompts other kinds of jumping-off. I had some trouble with the platform (longer segments took up to 20 minutes to load and crashed if I tried to start somewhere other than the beginning) and would like the camera operators to be more aware of each others' shot lines so they're not standing in the middle of the viewer's screen. Sturdier design boards would be great. Now my only question is who got to keep the collaborative class samples!

  • I like Malka's creations however, samples and more showing of the step by step. As other reviewer mentioned we did not need to watch her do as much sewing. Also, a lot of flinging of her hair and um and awes. More teaching and less sewing.

  • I have only watched one session, as I live in the UK and I did not watch it live. I have a busy schedule at present so will take awhile to work though them, initial thoughts were very good, I do like Malka's engery and free use of pallet. I look forward to watching them over the coming weeks and get back to you. I do like the concept of these classes and find them very useful. Thanks

  • It was interesting to see how Malka goes about improv piecing and making her design choices. She makes visually interesting quilts with wonderful use of color. On the down side: 1.Technical issues need to be worked out. Chat did not work for me. I use Apple products. 2.Malka needs to find alternatives to "um" and "kind of". The course was too long. We do not need to watch Malka sewing so much...some is ok. More samples partially done would cut way down on sewing time. I would prefer to see examples of Malka's work hanging on the walls behind her, so we could see where she was going with her demos and give us some fabulous quilts to admire. I believe the sewers on the set would also have benefited from seeing samples hanging on the walls.

  • I am watching the class on Demand so I haven't finished it yet. So far I'm enjoying the class and learning a lot. When this class is finished, I know the confidence will be there to complete a quilt on my own. A couple of issues. The camera angles weren't good for me. Her head was in the way in a lot of the overhead shots and if she was pointing at the sewing machine her hand would be in the way.

  • Love this class. Diane did a great job. I am a beginner so I am slowly working through it. Just finished my quilt top! It is looking great thanks to Diane's instruction.
