I love this class, as a new student in theory color, this was a great introduction for awareness, Love how Richard shows his passion for what he does.

A great course to learn more about colours. The way he engages with all the possibilities around colours as well as shapes helps you to look at this topic in a much broader and meaningful way. It is one of the courses that really helped me learn how to use colours, how to combine them and create contrast that matches each other.

  • Uli N. Nov 2, 2023

Very inspiring class. It's very hard to find color-related classes like this online. Thank you, Richard, for sharing your knowledge with us.

  • Amanda T. Oct 31, 2021

Fantastic course. I picked up so much and know I will return again and again. Very relaxing to listen to him speak.

Great class!! I think some of the confusion could be cleared up by talking about color in terms of how painters do it. I'm a graphic designer and I study painting which has helped my graphic design in so many ways. Vivid and Dull or Desaturated are handled in painting by physically mixing in the color's compliment. If you want a duller or desaturated blue, you add in bits of orange until you get to the point you want it. Light and dark in painting is called Value and you use a value scale which is are paint chips from white to black in a like 9 or 10 steps. You can learn to see all colors as values, but an easy way is to convert a color photo into black and white (print in in black and white; do it on your phone; do it in Photoshop, etc.) and then you'll see the values of the photo or image. Painters use tools like a red color evaluator (red glass or clear red plastic) to look through it to see value. Professional and advanced painters can just do it in their head.

The course seems basic, but it is really deep. He is teaching everything that Goethe, Aristoteles and Bauhaus school research, and more. It looks simple because he is very accesible, but in fact he introduces very heavy knwoledge about color.

  • Jessica W. Oct 30, 2020

Wonderful fun and engaging. I didn't want it to end. I have. Learned a lot and can't wait to pay the theories.

  • Thea M. Jul 18, 2020

got me thinking of ways to incorporate color theory into life not just art. made me aware of new color relationships that I did not know beforehand

  • D.J. F. Jun 9, 2020

The instructor greatly enriches the material by sharing his personal art experience. Color principles in general can be tough to grasp for me; his teaching style helps to break them into more easily understood lessons. In this class, the moderator does a good job of keeping the flow going, and was not distracting.

I love this class! It educated me very much, and i totally recommend it!! I loved making my own color grids also, and the teacher was very nice. <3

  • Su H. Jun 11, 2019

I've spent years trying to grasp color theory. The available info online has been really good, but Richard's way of teaching made all the difference in the world! He does more to show one how to apply the rules of color than I have yet to see! Wonderful course!! Thank you!!

  • serap . Dec 7, 2018

I like the knowledge behind that and the exercises serve the topic well

  • V. Jul 15, 2018

How wonderful to have such an experienced, thoughtful teacher, who takes educating others so seriously. The depth and breadth of his teaching skill is matched by his knowledge of the subject. I studied art in school, own some of the color books he recommends, and learned far more than I thought possible. And he does it all in such a kind, affirming, supportive way. What a calm guide. How lucky are we to have access to a class with him!

  • Barbara R. Apr 21, 2018

I am watching this class and learning a tremendous amount. Also, it is extremely pleasant and relaxing...like watching the moving LOVING VINCENT.

  • Michelle M. Sep 1, 2017

The content of this class was much more than I first expected. I learned so much and I'm so inspired that I'm going to purchase my very first Color-Aid kit. Richard's pleasing voice was an added bonus. He has a very gentle approach to teaching.

  • Linda A. Jul 13, 2017

I am a well seasoned artist and teacher and I still gleaned so many golden nuggets from this whole series, in my book a must watch!!

  • A. Oct 26, 2016

love this color technique class of colors and colleges

  • Antonio M. Oct 3, 2016

  • Guro A. Jul 26, 2016

I am in the middle of taking this class. I think Richard is very knowledgeable, but I think the class is incredibly boring. I would be more interested if he would tie color theory with actual works of famous artists, or trends in interior design, or trends in architectural landscaping using color. His class is too theory driven for me and I have already learned all this information already. I am on Lesson 10 and am finding myself fast forwarding because I am not inspired by this class. I think Richard has great passion for his subject and great experience. The class just doesn't correlate for me. Maybe the second half of the class will be more inspiring.

  • A. Dec 27, 2014

I was concerned that I wouldn't like watching everyone work, but I found that it was the best part! It allowed you to see Richard's lessons being put into action by the various students, each of which is talented in their own right. And Richard is great. Knowledgeable, intelligent, and supportive, he's got the attributes a great teacher should have. I'm a painter, not a designer, but the class really helped me a lot. When I go back to the canvas, it will be with a much deeper understanding of color, and how colors interact with each other.

  • K. Oct 28, 2014

I thought colour theory was going to be boring. I hate talking about this stuff. However, I also struggle with using colour in my work. Well, this course proved me wrong. It was so interesting. All the activities and just how Richard spoke about everything in such an intelligent, yet still relatable way. I stayed up late both days to make sure I watched it all. It's changed how I work as an artist - and how I think about colour theory. I'm going to have a colour theory dinner party now. I've also been sharing about it on various forums because I have been so incredibly inspired by it. Thanks!

  • Nabha C. Oct 28, 2014

The course was great. Richard was a very good teacher, appreciating the students’ work and helping them expand and improve on it. I learned from that alone. I feel more confident in choosing colors, and hope to bring a greater sense of fun to my design work. Thanks again.

I'm both a Musician and Artist, and even though I majored in Fine Arts, I STILL learned new tactics & applications watching the course exercises in color theory. I know they will help me with my future art endeavors, and they've also confirmed my view that color relationships & expressions are closely related to that of music. VERY interesting course! I';m enjoying it very much and this is only Day 1 ! Can't wait to "play" again tomorrow! :)
