Luminosity Masking has been the talk of the town for a while in the photo industry—and for good reason. It’s one of the easiest, most effective ways to create striking images that cover a wide range of levels of light. The idea is to separate the luminance data from your image, make a mask and edit the data independently. Blake Rudis will begin by walking you through the basics of Luminosity Masking, and then will address some of the more advanced uses. Once you master this awesome tool, you won’t know how you ever got by without it.

This course was useful to me. Good teacher.

One can create masks by "selecting" based on hue, saturation or luminance - any easy concept. The confusing part is making the actual selection and this is where a clear and concise explanation would be useful. I've watched several of Blake's other videos and his consistent modus operandi seems to be "first confuse, then reveal" which does nothing but waste time and frustrate the viewer. A superior approach would be to write out and follow a clear and logical course outline. Here's the short story: The easiest way for a beginner to create a luminosity mask is via the color range command targeting the grayscale channels at the bottom of the dialog box. The resulting mask can then be modified endlessly with all the standard Photoshop controls. Once the basic luminosity mask process is ingrained one can easily branch out to masks based on color range, contrast enhancements via in luminosity mode and then on to channel blending, if required.

Very well done. With attention, this is easy to follow.

Amazing class, so top notch, to the point, and made easy to understand. Yes, luminosity masking is not an easy topic, it is complex, I have been using PS for several years and it still took me a while to get my head around it. But Blake Rudis makes it so engaging and intuitive to understand. And guess what, once you understand LM, you won't be able to edit images without using it. its so powerful. Thanks a ton for this class.

Terrific class with clear, to-the-point instruction. After watching this class, I feel like I have a solid handle on an incredibly powerful tool that has always felt crazy intimidating. Would be happy to see more class taught by Blake Rudis.

I've been using PS for quite some time and have avoided this technique BECAUSE it's a bit tedious getting to the meat of what this tool can do. It is however well worth it. Blake has done a great job in presenting this and showing how it can best be used. He DOES NOT in ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM seem overbearing or egotistical. On the contrary, he seems very approachable and is well aware that what he's teaching is a very dry subject and is trying to make it fun and graspable. Do NOT pay any attention to the reviewer above who says he is...that says so much about the reviewer's insecurities.

Second class I took of his. I think he's a good teacher but don't take his classes until you are somewhat familiar and comfortable with PS....he doesn't take time for us beginners....you must know your way around the program or your head will explode and you'll get nothing out of it but frustration. lol I'm at the point I can watch it over and over to figure it out but its not a beginner class what so ever! Should be marked as such....just saying. I'm glad I bought it so I can go back later in my PS learning....for now I understand the concept but can't do it myself. If you just skip to the middle of the third lesson you'll be less confused than listening to a bunch of ??? that means nothing to you. The rest of it is great stuff you can use.

I’m reluctantly recommending this class, with one big caveat. While the content is good, it’s presented in a rather scattershot way, where he bombards you with a lot of information that he goes on to explain you don’t actually need to know. And I find him, frankly, overbearing. The force of his considerable ego dominates each lesson, when it should recede into the background. This makes for an unbearably smug teaching style. If you can get past that - and it isn’t easy - you can pick up some useful information.

Blake takes editing to the next level. He is technical and I had to rewind several times to take it all in but that's the beauty of taking an online course. Many thanks Blake.

Great great great. What? You can do that? And easy Wow. Wait, you can do that too and so easy too? Wow! (ratta tat tat useful stuff)

I enjoy Blake's teaching style and found this course very helpful. I'm trying to expand my knowledge of photoshop and I feel like this course (and Blake's other course on Blend-If both hit the mark. I highly recommend. I've had to watch this a few times to help me retain the info, since I don't use this often.

Challenging topic, but a top class. Well explained and easy to follow. Lots of practice to get it, but that's the benefit of owning the course.

  • Sarah D. May 28, 2018

Somewhat difficult for me. Watched the class twice to grab the steps/flow of making luminosity masks and modifying the results. With practice, the ability to make specific adjustments based on tone and color will result in much more realistic smooth images versus adjustments made solely on navigational borders i.e. quick selection tools, etc.. For anyone that wants to up the quality and control of their editing i recommend this class.

One of my favorite classes from Photoshop Week. I was using a much more cumbersome method for the same results before. Blake definitely made luminosity masks less scary and did a good job explaining how to use them.

  • Jenn M. May 22, 2018

This class blew my mind! I do a TON of masking in my workflow, and Blake Rudis just shaved hours off of my post-processing! Luminosity masking is so incredible, and Blake walks you through it every step of the way. I will be re-watching this class over and over as I edit. It is a fantastic investment for pennies on the dollar, with zero regrets! Thank you Blake for taking an intimidating concept and making it easy to understand and apply!

  • Doug S. May 14, 2018

Wow, Best class to start off Photoshop Week! Blake made me see the light (luminosity) and how easy it is to make selections with this tool and also be selective in the masks. Can't wait for the landscaping class.
