Athletic photography isn’t just about capturing a pose. It’s about capturing energy.
Movement is what transforms a static photograph into something powerful. The challenge is knowing when to freeze it, when to blur it, and how to light it so the motion enhances the story instead of destroying the image.
In this class, commercial photographer James Patrick breaks down his complete approach to photographing motion in fitness and sports imagery. Drawing from a career that includes more than 800 magazine covers and thousands of editorial images, James will show how he creates photographs that feel alive with energy, strength, and momentum.
You’ll learn the difference between freezing action with precision and using controlled motion blur to create unique visual effects. James will demonstrate how lighting choices impact motion, how shutter speed changes the story of an image, and how to direct athletes so their movement looks intentional and powerful on camera.
Whether you’re photographing fitness competitors, athletes, or active lifestyle brands, this workshop will help you move beyond static portraits and start creating images that capture the true intensity of movement.
