The solar system and the magic within it can be seen with more than just a telescope.
Capturing the colors and celestial phenomenons takes time, practice and little sleep.
CreativeLive is excited to bring you the learnings of Night Photography in one week. With five experts teaching a wide range of techniques and learnings; every photographer will be inspired to go nocturnal to capture some amazing images.
Gabriel Biderman will be teaching a Night Photography Fundamentals course for all the beginners out there, exploring the fundamentals of night photography, how to catch the stars and the dynamic landscapes when photographing in national parks, and how to capture an urban setting.
Chris Nicholson, the author of Photographing National Parks, will help all photographers plan their shoots from what parks to photograph in during what seasons, and how to safely explore and set your shot in his class Night Photography Toolkit.
Lance Keimig will cover how to capture truly out of this world imagery, while teaching how to capture the milky way and star trails in the course Astro Photography.
Timothy Cooper will take the creatives another step, by introducing Light Painting into your tricks and adding a dynamic element to your landscapes with light writing or accenting different elements of your photograph.
And Lastly Matt Hill will introduce Portraits at Night. Using your friends, or models, discover how you can capture amazing portraits in urban environments and national parks, without losing the amazing sky as a background.

Fantastic class! I am lucky to have attended many NPAN workshops and have learned so much from Gabe, Matt, Chris, Tim, and Lance - - and taking this online course to brush up on my skills right before my next workshop was so helpful. I very rarely go out on my own to shoot at night, so I get rusty and forget things... this course is just what I needed to refresh my skills! Thanks Gabe! :)
-
Thank you, Gabriel Biderman (https://www.ruinism.com/) for sharing your experience, knowledge and resources of night photography. Matt Hill’s website (https://matthillart.com/) showing his cut paper art will astound you!

Good course. In regards to dew, I have been placing chemical foot warmers on the outside of the lens hood and it has essentially stopped dew problems.

I found this class to be very helpful. I am planning a trip to New Mexico and wanted to be able to take some astro photos. Lance explained everything very clearly and I feel a lot more confident and excited about my ability to take some great shots.
-
Great introductory overview on long exposure/night photography. The 6 stop rule was worth the price of the course alone. I even shared it with one of my advanced night photography buddies who had never heard of it.
-
I appreciate all the technical knowledge presented here, and love the follow through from capturing the images in camera, then editing in LR and PS. As someone paying for a video presentation (as opposed to a live workshop), this could use some polish in editing. Show more examples of the points you are presenting instead of just a video of you lecturing from notes on your computer. Edit the lecture to correct misspoken information, state important points more emphatically, etc. All in all, very informative and interesting. Just like our photos, it needs a few tweaks in post to make it shine!

The two instructors are so engaging and passionate about night photography that it catches you at the start of the class and continues all the way through. I really enjoyed this class!
-
The good: You are learning from a respected master of night photography. It is well filmed. The content is logically organized. The bad: Some of the audio tracks when he is editing have a horrible echo.
-
Great course! I read all the reviews, and I don't think the negative ones reflect the course. Lance was straight forward on every step, not only showing setup in the field, but also his post-processing work flow. I am new to ALP and this course was a great start, not too long and for a great price! There's also a lot of good tribal knowledge I found here that you won't find online ;)

Excellent class! I'm really surprised by the lower review ratings. The presenter is very knowledgeable and does a great job of walking you through the night photography process, from start to finish. During the intro, he does explain that this course is intended for people who have a basic understanding of your camera and terminology, so there is an expectation that you'll have a basic skillset already established. I loved having the opportunity to learn from such an experienced photographer. Thank you!

One of the reasons I bought and watched the class was because I wanted to hear his point of view about the first thing that's mentioned under the Class Description: National Park rules and regulations- when to get a permit and how to obtain one. Sadly, in none of the episodes this is addressed unless I somehow managed to skip an episode which doesn't appear to be the case. Why is this the first item listed when it is not included in any of the episodes? Yes there are definitely good tips, but this doesn't seem right to me...

Great information and Gabriel just really knows his stuff. I totally recommend it to anyone because I believe you will learn SOMETHING even if you're familiar with most of the material. It's not that expensive and it gave me a bunch of ideas. On the negative, it's very poorly structured and edited with a lot of "hanging time" that could have been cut. This course probably could have utilized about 50%-75% of the footage they showed and achieved the same learning in less time with less distraction. Overall, I'm very happy about it and grateful to Gabriel and Matt for sharing their expertise. My criticisms are more directed at CreativeLive than the instructor.

I thought this was an exceptional course, chock full of information, practically with every sentence! I highly recommend it.
-
I think that this class, and the others in the Night Photography bundle, are fantastic. They are detailed, and many could be turned off by the detail. However, for someone who really wants to understand the craft, attention to detail is crucial. These guys did a great job and I have already implemented their guidance in my own photography adventures.

Absolutely recommend this course for anyone wanting to learn more about astrophotography. What sets this class apart from other online classes is Lance physically walks through setting up a shot, doing test shots, light painting, and editing. As a visual learner, some concepts I have read about before finally clicked by watching someone else doing it. Can't wait for late Spring to test my knowledge!

Exactly what we were looking for... experienced, articulate and to the point. Not to mention truly passionate about his subject and it shows as he's teaching it. Didn't witness any excessive advertising, thanks for the equipment pointers for us beginner/intermediate folk as there are lots of ways to waste money in this hobby/profession. So thankful for the insight on what has been so effective for him for so long... his photographs speak for themselves. It really pays off to spend the time watching each lesson all the way through. For all the naysayers- bah...... as teach would say it "Keep on Clicking". And to Gabriel- If you're ever heading to Big Bend give us a shout! My uncle works in the park and we know allllll the sweet spots :)

Like it so far. Very informative and easy to follow, even for a foreigner like myself (Netherlands). The only thing I wonder about so far is... does it always rain in Seattle? And how does that affect your work and photos? Anyway, great course, like it a lot! Gert Klay

Only a male photographer would start the class off by saying: "The camera is the heart of the image." For me, the camera is just the tool. The heart of the image beats within the photographer. Guys tend to be very much into equipment...
-
This was never meant to be strictly about photography...its about all the non-photography issues that help you get the shot. I found this most useful...

While I believe this course is more beneficial for a photographer with better night photography and lighting skills, I learned quite a bit. This class made me think of some interesting ideas, especially using regular light sources such as flashlights or a pixelstick.
-
Too many numbers/math. Needs to be simplified more. Love the night photography concept and the results however. Lost me with all the numbers though -
-
Really enjoyed and learned a lot from this class and put what I learned to use the first night. This opened a new type of photography that I find exciting and fun.

If you understand the purpose of this class, you will get a great deal of benefit from it. It is NOT a photography class in the sense of teaching technique, gear, or artistic considerations. It is a class on scouting and preparing for landscape photography - particularly night photography. While the instructor works heavily in the national parks, his techniques would be valuable anywhere. I especially benefited from the section on various resources. He mentions several books and gives specific insights into apps designed for photographers. Most of which I was familiar with, but he even covers their basic use and function. Those not accustomed to spending time on trails or in the back country will also appreciate the very practical advice that he offers on safety, clothing, and general considerations. A nice concise package that covers a lot of ground.

A great course on an unconventional topic.
