This is the best Filming stuff!

  • Thomas M. Sep 16, 2021

I learned a lot from this class! It's nice to see things in action when explaining how things are done.

  • Rafael C. Dec 17, 2019

It's a great concise instruction video course. Minus the endless "balding" jokes though :-)

  • Gabriela R. Aug 11, 2019

The most valuable thing about this class is that you get to see them make mistakes. Because filmmaking requires you to make a lot of those. You see how they simply keep going and find ways around that. Also, while they are filming and editing they provide you with great insights.

Lots of information, and to completely grasp some of the clips I had to view them twice. I feel the instructors are quite capable of making videos productions, but seem to not be in synch sometimes in teaching what they do. They have lots of energy, but sometimes their audio "steps on each other" when explaining something. I definitely feel it was worth what I paid for the course.

It was amazing course, reviewed all aspects of Filmmaking and significant points of Videography to Post Production. This course is so helpful for professionals and beginners.

  • Max M. Sep 7, 2018

I think this is a really great course for people who are starting out as filmmakers. It it offering me new ways of thinking about filmmaking and I really like that it is covering so many aspects of the filmmaking process. I will become a better filmmaker because of this course and highly recommend it to those who are keen to learn about the art of filmmaking.

This is a great course for beginners like myself, in video making. Both Jeff and Ross know their stuff very well and you will learn a lot in this class. They communicate very well and impart their knowledge generously. The only section which went over my head was class 6 Understanding Conflict in Storytelling, which may as well have been in Greek or Chinese. Classes 19 and 20 are very valuable as they give you a good understanding of film editing, however without prior knowledge of Adobe Premiere it's hard to grasp every detail. I would definitely recommend this class.

I am thankful that I found CreativeLive and signed up for this class. For a couple of years I have been looking for a comprehensive course to teach me about filmmaking for the independent artist. I have sought the professional guidance of "people in the business" but they were more interested in taking your money than helping. And they were very condescending and arrogant. At CreativeLive I have found people who are like me and willing to share their knowledge with me. This particular course gave me the foundation to know what to purchase and where to start in my first efforts of filmmaking. This course, though very informative, I would wish if was a bit more technically than theoretical. Ross is great at what he does but I felt spent too much time on too many theoretical aspects of filmmaking and not enough fundamentals. Jeff was better at explaining the technical aspects of filmmaking but did not speak as much as Ross. Overall, I find that Jeff and Ross were wonderful teachers and I learned so much from them. I am looking forward to enrolling in additional classes at CreativeLive and hopefully if Jeff and Ross teach more courses, I will sign up. Thank you so very much Jeff, Ross and the CreativeLive team!

I rarely give a review before I've finished a class, but already I'm VERY pleased with my purchase - the Shot Sequencing class alone was worth the money. These guys are really giving you a clear look at the difference between videography (shooting reality and serving it back to your clients) and filmmaking. My goals are to turn filmmaking into a business from ground zero. After this course, I'm confident I'll be well on my way there.

  • Michael V. Aug 2, 2017

Despite being somewhat old now, and some of the websites mentioned are no longer there, I found this a very helpful and informative course with lots of content aimed at a very accessible level. Just got to go out and practice it all now!

I haven't completed this course yet. But the "Storytelling Techniques" section has been worth the price of admission alone. Jeff and Ross really show ways of telling a story (linear, backwards, teaser, inner cutting) that by itself can take your editing and film work to a new level. Once I've completed the entire workshop, I'll do an update, but so far, it's the best filming course I've taken.

  • John V. Sep 14, 2015

I really loved this course! The first day alone about storytelling is worth the price of this course! Lots of courses about filmmaking are very technically/gear oriented. Ross and Jeff start first with How to tell your story and how to make it interesting to watch for your audience. Thats' a huge difference. If you know what story you want to tell, everything else falls into place!

  • Victor V. Aug 25, 2014

This course is nothing less than a lifetime experience! Away from the gear headed knobs and buttons, and deep into what film making is all about: storytelling as a fundamental way of self-expression, uniting every person and people(s) around the globe! Having a background as an anthropologist, and thereby social sciences, I'm deeply moved by these fundamentals, and the fact that both Jeff and Ross have a degree in Psychology and use that as a basis for all of their storytelling in a very warm and human(e) way. As I wrote, a real Life Changer! Thank you Jeff and Ross, and all @CreativeLIVE <3 !

I found this course to be a wealth of information. It has given me so many ideas of how to shoot and edit some new projects I have been thinking of. I love the teaching style and the many examples they show. I highly recommend this course for any person who wants to shoot creative, interesting and exciting videos. You don't have to shoot boring "this is what happened at my summer vacation" videos any more. Follow their teachings and you will shoot like a pro!

Came to this course late (Mid 2014) in fact was being hit with promotion for the new Filming Motion course that Jeff Medford's group have put together, and was trying to work out where to start with a DSLR getting into capturing more than still images, and found this course. The taster sessions looked really good, so went ahead and purchased the course, and not disappointed. One hiccup is that they regularly refer to materials on the Cinestory.com/Creativelive page, which alas is no longer there, but searching for Ross and Jeff across YouTube finds most of the materials that they refer to, I think it was only a copy of the script which I never found, but I do not feel not having this detracted from the learning experience - indeed Ross edited the script on the hoof while filming, and then again while editing. Very good introduction. Left me wanting more, but also left me feeling I know what it is I need to be working on next - "Shot Sequencing" as it happens - for which I am hugely grateful. I think without this course I would have ended up meandering into constantly improving gear and producing at best mediocre materials. Many thanks Jeff, Ross, and Creativelive.

Enjoyed this workshop a great deal. Had NO intention of doing video work until a job recently came up and I was asked personally by the client. I told them it was not my field, but, they wanted me to take a shot (no pun intended) at it. I watched this workshop and bought some more gear that is mentioned in the course to go with my existing photographic equipment, and the result is that I have been recommended for more work. Could not have done it without the invaluable tips and tricks as well as solid methodology criteria. Photography in my field of Glamour and Portraiture is still the main income. But I am now more confident to say YES to a video project after CL's workshop. Thanks guys, Mark

TERRIFIC workshop! Extremely helpful/educational ... and rather entertaining, too. (Bear in mind, I'm new to the cinematography end of things.) I'm pretty sure, no matter where you may be on the experience scale, you'll get enough ideas from this program to make it well worth your watching. I love the way they prioritize equipment needs & wants, and help us sift through the PILE of options out there. And their "$750 starter set-up" was definitely an eye-opener. (Um ... that's AFTER your camera and lenses, guys.) It's critical (and difficult) to maintain audience interest over a 3-day course ... otherwise, even the best material will go right over our heads. But Jeff and Ross were perfect together -- playing off, and feeding, each other continuously. Sometimes their banter is used for clarifying potentially confusing concepts ... and other times just for chuckles. All-in-all, I would recommend this to any but (perhaps) the REALLY advanced cinematographers out there. (Scorsese ... keep your wallet in your pocket.) For anyone considering purchasing the videos, consider this: Most of us who've already bought them ... did so AFTER watching a considerable amount of the workshop for free. That should tell you something of the quality of this material. Thanks, Jeff and Ross, and Creative Live!

Great 3-day workshop! I work for a college, teaching students to communicate via the video medium, as well as producing video for promo and events. This video is super useful to me... The most basic info was review, but it's great to see another team's approach to explaining and teaching the concepts. Some of the more advanced materials is on level or a reach for what I'm doing, so it's teaching me to move forward with my abilities. Just a note to the Creative Live folks, I love the idea of viewing for free and buy if you like to see again. I was able to catch a half hour here and there, which was enough to convince me to buy the whole thing. I wouldn't have been likely to plunk down $99 for a video when there really is so much out there for free. The difference, and reason it is worth it, is because this is so well organized and complete, and discusses a broad range of budgets as well as info for a range of skill levels. This live for free then pay to download model is great.

Day One was great, as an amateur photographer, I wanted to move into creating good family movies that don't remind me of the horrible slide shows of the past and my own wedding video 20 years ago. This course is perfect and marries my love of movies with my hobby. Looking forward to day two's live shoot and editing on day three with Premiere Pro. I just wish I was younger and could go back in time and do a wedding video and birth announcement of my 16 year old daughter that would make other strangers tear up over like the ones we saw today did in training. Thanks so much for sharing this knowledge for so little cost. The future memories and stories I will get to shoot will be priceless.
