What’s the best way to interact with your subject? What about all the technical aspects—from lighting to audio to editing? And of course, how will you get the funds to complete your film?

If all these uncertainties are causing you to rethink your idea of making documentaries, then this class is a must for you. Award winning documentarians and photojournalists Ed Kashi and Julie Winokur will give you all the information and inspiration you need to tackle your project and see it through to the finish.

In this class, you’ll learn how to:

  • Identify a great subject and define your vision.
  • Research your subject thoroughly and find other work that’s been done on it.
  • Choose and gather the equipment you’ll need.
  • Prepare for your interview, including formulating the right questions.
  • Conduct an interview, including setting up your lights and capturing the audio.
  • Create a post-production workflow.
  • Write a compelling pitch and create a trailer to gain funding and support.
  • Generate a variety of end products, including videos for social media and still photos.

Whether you’re looking to create shareable videos on social platforms or hoping to gather funding to produce a bigger project, this class will help you simplify the process and begin creating documentaries for clients or to fulfill your own artistic vision.

This course is outstanding! I am a beginning filmmaker, and I was looking for a course that would put me on a path to making interesting, meaningful films. This course more than delivered. The course is extremely well organized. They cover big picture topics and then delve into technical aspects. They also provide many helpful illustrations by showing portions of their own work. Fantastic course. Thank you!

  • Mike J. Sep 14, 2021

Incredible wealth of information. Hang in there as the real meat of the course comes once they are in the field, interviewing the violin repairman.

  • Elisa C. Mar 26, 2021

One of the best in line when it comes to making you understand the process of making a short documentary film. If you are unclear where to start or how to go about certain aspects.. give this a shot. it helped me in gaining clarity. Recommended. Obviously.

  • Frederic N. Dec 15, 2020

Excellent class! This is how a class should be: full of valuable information, even for a seasoned professional, and without the useless small talk or repetitions that make you skip until something relevant is said.

  • Jeremy R. Jul 7, 2020

Brilliant course, you get so many insights and advice on how to tackle the short documentary format. I wish there had been a little bit more on kit, self-shooting VS using a crew, ... but that's the only thing. Thank you very much for your teaching, and now off to make my own!

  • Des L. Jun 1, 2020

This is a long course. It isn't for those simply wanting a "punters guide to documentary film making". Rather, it takes a conversational approach that requires you to think and reflect on Julie and Ed's experience. I found it to be really though provoking, informative and, most importantly, inspirational. Thanks Julie and Ed... loved it!

  • Nicholas A. Feb 28, 2020

If the course ended on lessons 15 (out of 35) it would have already been worth it. Positively surprised with the quality of this class.

Outstanding!!! I am midway through the class and felt compelled to write a review to let Creativelive and everyone else know how amazing this class is. I have watched several classes on Creativelive but this is far superior to others I have viewed. Ed and Julie are clear masters in their craft of storytelling. If you are undecided about which class to take in the category of filmmaking you MUST put this at the top of your list. It is first class. Frankly, I wish all Creativelive instructors were of this caliber. They are delivering concise information that is incredibly impactful. I love that they are here to teach and not sell their DVDs. Thank you, Ed and Julie, you are a magnificent team.

Not only did this class help with direction when I had an idea to chase documentary work, it was a happy accident I found these two wonderful people. I can relate to the sandwich generation at an earlier age than most I cried when I saw I'm not alone. I seriously can't believe how well they told a story. Thank you Ed and Julie. I appreciate you more than you will ever know. -Justin

  • Benoit D. Feb 19, 2019

I'm so happy I took this class. It is well organized, comprehensive, and full of examples that illustrates what Ed and Julie talk about. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

  • Kat A. Jun 4, 2018

I'd like to introduce the concept of editing in your piece. Time is precious to me and getting 10 minutes in and having this couple talking mumbo jumbo nothing and repeating each other is super annoying. Not sure I'm going to finish this OR do another class. Sorry.

  • Gisella A. Apr 23, 2018

Excellent course. Very helpful for finding (and keeping) motivation through the bumpy route to completing a documentary. Also rich of very practical tips from their experience, that we proven useful to get out of a stuck situation, for a documentary I'm working on. I also really love their attitude and passion in what they do!

  • Dee J. Feb 14, 2018

Interesting course, has me (complete amateur beginner photographer never mind filmmaker), contemplating picking up my camera and giving it a try, A sound basis to give hope that its a skill that can be learned and is worth learning/practicing, It gives incentive to pick up a camera and make the mistakes and commit to the learning curve to see if you can do it. Maybe even do it well. I enjoyed watching the process of how they put a documentary together. I found it fascinating to see how a film was dissected into its different components Useful and inspirational.

  • Celeste D. Feb 9, 2018

This is the first CreativeLive class I have purchased and I am extremely happy I did. Julie and Ed are so passionate about what they do, so professional, such good communicators that they have energized and inspired me to explore this field in more depth. After watching all the videos, I feel as if I know them, and I wish I could take an in-person workshop with them!

  • Rupert B. Feb 7, 2018

This is an inspiring and enlightening class delivered by two true professionals. Many thanks Ed and Julie for helping this lawyer turned filmmaker to get started in documentary work.

  • Mark W. Feb 3, 2018

I learned enough from this class to inspire me to take my experience from making education and training video to the next level.

  • Alexis F. Feb 1, 2018

I truly recommend this class, it gives you an overlooking about how to make your own project, and surely it's very inspiring. It takes several topics, so at the end of the course you feel more confident in the process you have to step into it.

  • Britt B. Jan 7, 2018

I highly recommend this class. So many aspects of their expertise are invaluable to me. I create for youtube and my ability to tell a story has been upped enormously. Thank you Julie and Ed.

  • David C J. Jan 4, 2018

As a documentary filmmaker working today, this is the best course you could possibly hope for. The lessons are more like conversations, with excellent examples from the guest instructors, themselves.

  • Brian A. Aug 18, 2017

In the "Universal Themes Through First-Person Storytelling" chapter, starting at 12:50 on the video.. Julie speaks of one of the most important lessons of the course, "The STORY holds up". She mentions Ed and herself debated showing some older non HD footage of a very emotional documentary they made. They did, and its a touching, emotional scene, in 4:3, but that doesnt matter... the story holds up. great lesson Julie. Tools and gear will always be changing, but the way you tell a story will survive the test of time. Two thumbs up for this course.

  • Rachel V. Aug 9, 2017
