Jessica and Michael also share a series of behind-the-scenes interviews with seasoned designers working at the publishing giant Random House and award-winning design studio Pentagram. This class provides a full- bodied robust understanding of all the things that go into being a book designer, a classic tenet to anyone who makes things in the world.Even 6 years later, this class has so much valuable information and well presented. Thank you.
Valuable class
Amazing class
Wonderful. Comprehensive and articulate.
Extremely useful course. It's inspiring to see two design professionals discuss and teach a topic that they so obviously love.
Great course and useful advice's. Thanks a lot.
enjoyed the series, thank you! Just wanted to add an answer to the question in "Book Anatomy 1" : do they endpapers have a mechanical function? Yes, they do! Here is a quote from "publishing terms" https://publishingterms.wordpress.com/2010/11/09/end-papers/ In a hardback book, the blank pages lying between the start and end of the book pages proper. Sometimes these are coloured and/or decorative. The function of the end papers relates to bookbinding where the sheets are glued in to hide the joint between the hardback case and the book block within it and to give greater strength to the binding.
Magnificent !
Very engaging and informative class! My only 2 recommendations for the creators (if they read the comments) would be to add a pdf file of the presentation available to download (since it has all the references and visual examples) and, as someone below already mentioned, it would have been nice to actually see the magazine and book pages close-up just as they were being discussed in the videos. But overall I loved the course and the lecturers, who are a true inspiration.
I had an opportunity to attend this amazing workshop by Michael Bierut and Jessica Helfand. I was gained information about the history of book design, the do's and don'ts, and even insight on the industry itself. It was a surreal experience! My favorite part of the lesson has to be when Jessica and Michael interviewed other artists about their books, with an very in depth analysis on their design choices and process. After seeing Michael explain his design process for his book, I bought it after the class was done. Definitely worth the money for the lesson, and will be back for more!
I really enjoyed this class. It wasn't so much about technique tips or instruction, but more about how designers see the world. I learned so much from both Michael and Jessica, and their witty New York sensibility can't be beat. Thanks so much!
Was a fun class! It's great for students as well as working designers.
I had an opportunity to be in the live studio audience for Thinking Like a Book Designer. The session was rich with content, taking us through the whole process of what goes into designing a book as well as interviewing top book designers in the field. I also appreciated the lively exchange between the presenters Jessica Heifand and Michael Bierut. As someone who over the years got burned out as a graphic designer, feeling more like a machine than a designer often times, it reminded me of why I was drawn to become a graphic deisgner in the first place.
It's a good class – the content is informative and gives a good overview of book design and the though process behind it. My one criticism is that as a book designer for over a decade myself, I was irritated by the recorded interviews – my interest was in looking at the pages they were talking about, not mostly looking at people pointing at things that I can't see. It would have been nice to have either a slide or an overhead camera to show what the 'this little line' or 'this caption placement' actually looks like.
This class is taught by the top designers and educators in Graphic Design. It is packed full of information about designing a book, how to think about and design all the components coneptually, and that are tied into the content of the text. The video interviews with featured designers is an opportunity to see their individual working process and how they work, and relate it to your own process.
